Most popular baby names revealed as Oliver is knocked off top spot for boys after eight years

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed the most popular first names for babies in 2021 using birth registration data from across the United Kingdom, with some changes in both the boys and girls lists.

New names have appeared in the top 10 at the expense of others which have been popular for decades.

In the boys’ list, Oliver — the most popular name for eight consecutive years — has been replaced at the top by Noah, which was fourth in 2020 and 16th in 2011. Meanwhile, Jack — misses out on a spot in the top 10 for the first time since 1996.

Meanwhile Florence and Willow make the top 10 names for girls for the first time in 26 years. Along with Freya, they replace Isabella, Rosie and Sophia. Olivia remains top for the sixth year running.

In total, 4,525 baby boys were named Noah in 2021, and 3,649 girls were named Olivia, up from 3,640 in 2020.

James Tucker, Head of Health and Life Events Analysis at the ONS said: «Noah has replaced Oliver as the most popular name for boys in 2021, moving Oliver into second place and ending an eight-year reign at the top. Olivia remained the most popular girls name in 2021, having held the top spot since 2016.

«Interestingly, Noah was not top in any of the English regions, but has risen up the ranks in most regions since last year to take first place overall.»

New entries to the top 100 baby names were:

🆕 Lara, Beatrice and Sara
🆕 Blake, Brody, Kai, Rupert, Tobias and Nathan

Largest movers were:

⬆️ Olive, up 25 spaces to 74th place pic.twitter.com/xKZIXb9xjc

Research suggested that famous figures — both real and fictional — have again influenced naming trends.

The ONS said Luca entered the top 30, partly in thanks to the Pixar fantasy film of the same name: from fewer than 200 boys being named Luca in 1996, there were more than 1,800 last year.

Names such as Ezra and Mabel have also seen large increases in popularity thanks to singers George Ezra and Mabel.

Mr Tucker also pointed out names that are falling out of favour.

«Leslie has had relatively little popularity in recent years with fewer than seven boys named each year since 2018,» he added. «Others such as Clifford, Nigel and Norman have not fared much better with ten or fewer boys being named.

«Girls’ names such as Glenda and Kerry, that were more common before, are also becoming endangered and we have seen less than five girls being named each year since 2018.»

Here are the top 100 names in 2021 for boys and girls.

From Star Wars to the Kardashians: the cultural influences that could be driving baby name trends

Famous figures, both real and fictional, have long set baby naming trends, and 2021 appears to have been no exception. While it is not possible to know exactly what was behind parents’ decisions, some noteworthy names from across the cultural spectrum have surged up the charts of late.

You can see the latest list of the most popular baby names in England and Wales in our accompanying bulletin.

Names from films feature strongly

Last year’s highly streamed coming-of-age tale «Luca» could have increased interest in the name, with the number of boys named Luca jumping from 1,323 in 2020 to 1,807 in 2021, which made it the 28th-most popular name for boys that year.

The release of Disney adventure «Raya and the Last Dragon» in 2021 could be another animation influencing parents. The film, which follows the exploits of warrior princess Raya, coincided with a big increase in the number of registrations of the name, with the count more than doubling from 110 girls in 2020 (joint-393rd) to 251 (203rd) in 2021.

The number of newborn boys named Kylo rose more than fivefold to 54 in 2016 after “The Force Awakens” hit cinema screens, introducing audiences to villain Kylo Ren.

The count peaked at 189 in 2020, possibly driven by Kylo turning his back on the dark side in the third film of the latest trilogy, which was released in 2019.

The number of Landos has also risen since the appearance of Lando Calrissian in the third film, rising more than fivefold from 13 in 2019 to 74 last year.

The name Finn, one of the trilogy’s main characters, also rose in popularity from 512 registrations for boys in 2015 to 788 in 2021. This could also be influenced by crime drama «Peaky Blinders» (see below).

Musical names are climbing the charts

Ezra was just outside the top-50 most popular names given to boys in 2021, with 1,226 registered that year.

The name rose in prominence at around the same time that musician George Ezra achieved widespread fame, with an 89% increase in 2015 coming after his debut album “Wanted on Voyage” topped the charts.

Like Ezra, the number of baby girls named Mabel also peaked in 2021 at 885, which followed particularly large increases in 2018 and 2020.

This may have been influenced by the singer and songwriter Mabel, whose breakthrough single “Finders Keepers” reached the top 10 in 2017. Her album “High Expectations” later reached number three in 2019.

The death of musical legend David Bowie in January 2016 seems to have led to some tributes, with the name Bowie increasing from a count of 12 for boys in 2015 to 78 last year.

The name Ziggy, perhaps inspired by Bowie’s iconic stage persona Ziggy Stardust, has proved even more popular for boys – rising from 33 registrations to 136 over the same period.

Both names have also risen in popularity for girls, which is perhaps apt given the singer’s reputation for blurring traditional gender roles.

The birth of the Prince and Princess of Wales’ first child George in 2013 was followed by an increase in registrations of the name, peaking at 5,263 in 2016.

Archie ascended to the ninth-most popular boy’s name in 2020 after the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first child, with 2,944 Archies registered that year. However, that only returned the name to levels seen in 2018.

Louis also rose in popularity after the birth of William and Kate’s third child, with 1,274 registrations in 2019 compared with 941 the previous year.

The birth of the Wales’ second child Charlotte in 2015 caused the name to climb from a count of 1,951 that year to 2,596 in 2016, rising from the 25th-most popular name to 12th. However, Charlotte has gradually fallen back to 25th in the rankings since.

The Sussexes’ second child Lilibet was not born until June 2021 but still appears to have drawn some admiration, with eight Lilibets registered in total over the year compared with fewer than three in each of the previous seven years.

TV character names are proving a hit

There were 737 boys born in 2021 who were named Otis, compared with 277 in 2018 before the first series, meaning it rose in the ranks from 192nd to 81st.

Maeve saw an even more dramatic rise, from a count of 84 (joint-507th) in 2018 to 654 (77th) in 2021.

Arthurs have more than doubled since the arrival of Birmingham’s infamous gangster family on TV screens

Arthur had been rising in popularity before the show «Peaky Blinders» first appeared on the BBC in 2013 but jumped into 7th place in 2018 and 3rd in 2020.

Overall, the number of Arthurs has more than doubled from 1,559 in 2013 to 3,766 in 2021.

Finn has also risen from 511 registrations (116th place) for boys born in 2013, to 788 (72nd) in 2021, although this could also be influenced by the «Star Wars» films.

Although Tommy was the show’s central character, the name fell in popularity during the early years of the show.

However, it rose by 263 registrations to a total of 1,299 in 2018 after the fourth series was aired.

Netflix show «Stranger Things» may have inspired some uncommon names

Dustin rose from a relatively obscure four registrations in 2015 to 25 in 2020, after the first three series of the sci-fi horror appeared between 2016 and 2019.

There have also been 10 newborn girls named Max since 2018, which was the year after the female character of the same name appeared in series two of the show.

There were even three babies registered with the name Eleven in 2018, another name shared with one of the show’s protagonists.

Khloe Kardashian’s daughter True was born in April 2018, after which the number of registrations of the name for girls rose from fewer than three that year, to 10 in 2021. If you name a child in an original way, then his fate will not be the same as that of others, it will be special. Many mothers think so, flipping through the endless pages of the Internet in search of that very name. Basically, parents want to choose an original name so that kindergarten teachers roll their eyes, there are those who choose names that will bring good luck — also an interesting approach. Our colleagues from Wday.ru remembered what names were popular in Moscow 100 years ago, and found out where all the Nastenkas have gone now.

One of the most popular names in post-revolutionary Russia was Anastasia, or affectionately Nastenka. That was the name of almost every tenth girl in the country. By the end of the 20th century, there were very few Nasts. And in recent years, parents are increasingly remembering this undeservedly forgotten beautiful name and giving it to their children. According to statistics, now Nastya is in the top 10 most popular girl names.

The name Ivan has the same fate — a hundred years ago this name was a classic, then, in the 90s, Ivanov diminished. And now this name is in fourth place in the popularity rating.

But the name Galina over the past 100 years has completely lost its relevance. Either because in Spanish and Italian this word means “chicken”, or just tired. The name Lyudmila, which used to be honored, has now been replaced with the short Mila, as newborn girls are now often called.

Such names as Nina, Valentin, Gennady, Anatoly are quite forgotten nowadays. And if in Soviet times they were widespread, today they are a rarity. Infrequently today you will meet Vasilyev, Tamar and Claudius. Almost disappeared from everyday life such names as Zoya, Evdokia, Lydia, Gerasim, Zinaida. But once it was they who headed the lists of popular names.

There were other rare names 100 years ago, for example, Timur. This name was so popular that even the writer Arkady Gaidar called his story «Timur and his team» that way. It was understood that any simple boy should associate himself with the hero of this work. But if he called the story «Apollo and his team», the effect would be completely different.

But there are names that have not lost their leading positions for more than a century. These are Alexander, Alexey, Sergey, Vladimir, Dmitry and Andrey. They are still very popular with new parents and are widely used. No less popular are the names Elena, Mikhail, Natalya, Olga, Anna. But our great-grandmothers gave them to children!

By the way, many celebrities prefer to give their children old and rare Russian names. For example, actress Olga Drozdova named her son Elisha, just like the hero of an ancient epic, and the former member of the Ranetki group, Natalya Melnichenko, generally gave her daughter the ancient Russian name of the Story (abbreviated as Tale). Sergei Zhukov from «Hands Up!» named one of his sons by the old name Miron, Natasha Koroleva and Tarzan gave their son the name Arkhip. The daughter of Sergei Shnurov is called the Orthodox name Seraphim, in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov and the archangel of the same name; The musician named his son Apollo.

The son of Oleg Gazmanov, Rodion, bears an old name, which a hundred years ago was almost as popular in Russia as Ivan. Do you remember Pushkin’s nanny’s name was Arina Rodionovna?

Actress Ekaterina Klimova remembered another rather forgotten name — Korney — and gave it to her son. Her colleague Glafira Tarkhanova also named her son Kornei, and carriers of other old Russian names — Yermolai, Gordey and Nikifor — also grow up in her family. According to the actress, they specifically looked for rare names for children to indicate their individuality. After all, anyone can be Sasha or Petya, and you try to be Nikifor.

The eccentric Nikita Dzhigurda decided to give an old name to his son. One of his heirs is called Artemy-Dobrovlad, which, apparently, means «possessing good.» True, it is not known what patronymic the children of Dobrovlad will have.

5 popular names that our ancestors were afraid to give children

Stories

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the Church played an important role in naming a child. The names were chosen according to the holy calendar, and if the priests were against any option, it was easier to reconcile than to disobey. Together with colleagues from the Happy Parents magazine, we tell: what names, according to our ancestors, could ruin the baby’s life.

Svetlana

This is a unique name that has neither Old Slavonic nor any other origin. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was simply invented by the poet and philologist Alexander Vostokov — that was the name of the heroine of his romance Svetlana and Mstislav. The work caught the eye of Vasily Zhukovsky, who wrote his ballad «Svetlana».

From that moment on, the name began to gain popularity among educated aristocrats. But… for the ROC to recognize the name, there had to be a new saint with that name. And he, or rather her, as you understand, was not. Therefore, the priests flatly refused to baptize the girls with Svetlana, offering their parents the closest possible, as it seemed to them, Photinius (from Greek — “Light”). And when they began to be overwhelmed with requests, they issued a decree «On the prohibition of naming Svetlana.»

According to one version, the only exception was made for the daughter of the commandant of the Peter and Paul Fortress Alexander Ellis, who was born in 1898. The post of commandant was considered the third most important in the capital, so the Holy Synod granted the petition.

Everything changed after the October Revolution. The church was separated from the state and it was no longer important whether there was a name in the calendar or not. Taking advantage of this, parents began to increasingly call their daughters Svetlana, and by the middle of the 20th century it was one of the most popular female names in the country. That was the name of the only daughter of Joseph Stalin, after which the name became to some extent a symbol of girls from the party elite.

Lada

This name turned out to be “outlawed” when Christianity was adopted in Russia. And it is not alone: Yarila, Veles, Mokosh and other pagan names in honor of the Slavic deities became undesirable and at baptism they were changed to a name from the saints.

was in Saints. Prince Vladimir Krasno Solnyshko himself, who baptized Russia, became Vasily, his grandmother Princess Olga received the name Elena, and the Sons of Vladimir Svyatoslavovich, Boris and Gleb , became Roman and David.

From that moment until the second half of the 19th century, babies were not called by such ancient Slavic names as Vsevolod, Vyacheslav, Igor, Oleg, Rostislav .

Alexandra

Until the middle of the 19th century, this name, both in male and female form, was one of the main dynastic names of the Russian Empire. But the girls seemed to be pursued by evil fate: all the princesses Alexandra died before the age of 20. The name fell into disgrace after the death of the eldest daughter of Emperor Alexander II. Little Sasha died at the age of 7 from meningitis. Following the royal family, other noble people stopped naming their daughters that way.

Alexei

This name was banned after the eldest son of Peter I, Alexei Petrovich, abdicated in favor of his brother, was recognized as a traitor and executed. Prior to this, Alexei Alekseevich, the son of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, died at the age of 15.

In the imperial dynasty, they treated their unfortunate ancestors with superstitious awe and no longer named their children after them.

By the way, Nicholas II broke this tradition. After two centuries of oblivion, the name Alexei reappeared in the imperial protocol, when the first and only son was born to the king. Tsarevich Alexei repeated the fate of his ancestors — at the age of 14 he was shot along with his family.

Fedor

This name turned out to be unpopular after the 15th century for two reasons: firstly, there was a martyr Fedor in the Saints, and it was not very good to name children in honor of the martyrs. Secondly, all eminent Fedors had a tragic fate. Therefore, they stopped calling boys like that.

But, at the same time, there were plenty of girls with the middle name Fedorovna among the nobility. The casket opens simply: since the end of the 17th century, all the future spouses of the Romanovs received a new patronymic in honor of one of the most revered icons at the court — the Fedorov Mother of God.
