Monitor temperature in baby room: Monitor Your Baby Room’s Temperature and Climate
Posted onHow Baby Monitors With Temperature Sensors Can Save Lives in Jul 2023
Baby monitors have been getting a lot of bad press recently, due to concerns around how secure they are. However, the right monitor could potentially save your child’s life – especially if your heater or heating system malfunctions in the middle of the night.
The Tragic Case of Sammie Volmert
Table of Contents
In February of this year in Texas, a malfunctioning HVAC system caused the death of 17-month old Sammie Volmert.
Her parents had a split HVAC system. They put little Sammie to bed with the nursery thermostat set to 72 degrees. When they awoke, they realized the heating system had malfunctioned during the night. By the time her father reached the nursery, the heat was around 100 degrees and poor Sammie had passed away.
The cause of death was listed as “Hypothermia”, due to an elevated body temperature. Doctors noted that although more common when children are left in cars, it is quite rare in the home.
As many parents know, young children and babies are particularly sensitive to changes in temperature. Sammie’s 3-year old brother Jackson was also on the same floor. He remained unharmed by the change in temperature.
The Volmerts have a facebook page “Remembering Sammie Volmert” where you can read their account and similar stories from other parents.
Parents Recommend Thermostat Monitors
The Volmerts are now seeking legal action against the HVAC company, but nothing will compensate them for their little girl. They are urging other parents to invest in Baby Monitors with can also measure room temperature.
Surprisingly, this feature is not on many of the best-selling baby monitors . There are also some which do say they “Monitor Temperature” but it is only visual! How can you see a visual alert when you’re sleeping?
To help, we researched the best baby monitors with temperature sensors that can actually wake you up and warn you in time.
VTech VM321 Safe & Sound Monitor
Vtech is one of the leading brands of Baby Monitors. There VM321 model does something that many from Samsung, Summer Infant or even Motorola don’t. It beeps if the room is too hot or too cold! Sounds simple, but many baby cams don’t have this important feature!
It also sounds an audible alarm (not just visual!) if the battery runs low or the link is dropped between the camera and the receiver. As discussed earlier, this is absolutely essential for when you’re sleeping and want alerts you can act on from the monitor.
As discussed earlier, this is absolutely essential for when you’re sleeping and want alerts you can act on from the monitor.
The V-Tech VM321 also does all of the basics well. Here are some of the important features:
- Amazing Range – Up to 1000ft unobstructed!
- DECT Encryption – Secure DECT encryption with crystal clear sound quality
- Night Vision – 8 Infrared LED lights for a great picture in darkened rooms
- Expandable – You can add up to 4 cameras to the receiver
- Split-screen – See multiple cameras at once
- Flashing Sound Alert – In split-screen mode, it can alert you to sound from individual monitors.
Many parents are rightfully worried about their monitor feed being hacked. This monitor uses DECT so it is not on a wireless network. This means that it’s more secure and their won’t be interference from other WIFI devices and cordless phones.
It also has a two-way talk which is great for parents of toddlers and pre-school children and lullabies too.
Some drawbacks to the Vtech VM321 are the relatively small screen size at 2.8”. Also, there is no tilt and pan function.
There is an adjustable lens which you can manually adjust to ensure your baby is always in shot. Also, it’s relatively cheap and easy to expand this Vtech model to up to 4 video cameras. This will allow you to have full coverage of the nursery. It also makes it a great camera for twins or as a dual room video monitor.
Hello Baby Digital Baby Monitor
This Hello Baby monitor has a feature that many much more expensive models don’t have – a temperature monitor that beeps loudly and turns the screen red.
It also has some other great features:
- Great range – up to 960ft unobstructed
- Power-saving mode – you can choose to go “audio only”
- Expandable – Add up to 4 cameras to 1 receiver
- Pan & Tilt – Pan 360 degree around and tilt 120 degrees up and down
- Long Battery – Can last 12 hours on battery saver mode
- Night Vision – Has great video quality at night
- Lullabies – Has 8 pre-programmed lullabies
- Talk-Back Feature – Talk to & soothe your little one
Naturally, there are some things you won’t get at this price point. At 2.4”, the monitor’s LCD screen is on the small side for some parents.
The other thing you need to know is there is no wall bracket included with this model. This makes it harder for parents to mount in the nursery.
You can read feedback from parents on the Hello Baby digital monitor here.
Phillips SCD570 Avent DECT Baby Monitor
Philips is a brand parents can trust, and this baby monitor has great feedback from hundreds of parents.
This particular model will monitor the nursery temperature and send an alert to your parent unit if it changes. The alert is a loud “BUZZ!” which parents say is loud enough to wake them from deep slumbers.
The drawback to the Philips SCD570 is that is audio only, so there’s no video feed. However, it does have quite a few advantages over video:
- More Secure
There’s no WIFI needed so this monitor is virtually hack-proof
- No Interference
Philips gaurantee 100% and no interference from other baby monitors, cordless phones or other devices. The DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) technology is digitally encrypted to protect your privacy.
- Longer Battery Life
Video baby monitors tend to burn through batteries. With no video feed, you’ll get an extended battery life which is better on your pocket and the environment.
- Better Sound Quality
“Audio-only” monitors often have better sound. You’ll be able to hear every movement your baby makes.
- Cheaper
This audio monitor is cheaper than many baby video cameras. You can check today’s price here.
Alternative Solution
Wireless Thermometer / Hygrometer for Smartphones
You’ll be pleased to know that there is an alternative solution to monitoring nursery temperature.
The SensorPush wireless thermometer will measure both the temperature and humidity of any room and send alerts to your smart-phone. You can pre-program alerts in case the temperature or humidity changes. You can also receive the feed on multiple devices in your home (I.e other phones, tablets) that are paired with it.
Having a humidity sensor is a great feature that hardly any baby monitors have. Measuring the level of humidity in a nursery is a great idea. Many hospitals keep their humidity at 55%, with 40 – 60% being generally accepted levels. If the air becomes too humid it can cause asthma and breathing issues. It also helps spread things like dust mites, pollen, and other airborne bacteria.
The SensorPush Hygrometer currently sends alerts via bluetooth 4.0 (not wifi). This means it has a stated 300ft “line of sight” range. Of course, with rooms and walls the range will be considerably less.
Users still report they can put it in the garage and get updates anywhere in their home. SensorPush have announced they are currently working on a wi-fi gateway to make it internet compatible.
This wireless hygrometer could make a good, cheaper solution if you don’t want to purchase a baby monitor. You can find the SensorPush for sale here and on google apps here.

WE’RE HERE TO HELP
If we want our money to go further, it’s vital that we spend it wisely. This website will help you make better-informed purchasing decisions. There’s nothing worse than budgeting for an item to find out it doesn’t meet your expectations.
An example that immediately comes to mind is a rather expensive driveway guard. The sort you use to stop kids running out into the street. A great idea in principle, I’m sure you’ll agree. However, when the wind blows the net comes away from the ground and kids can easily crawl under it.

The Federal Government’s “Child Tax Credit” does help out with the cost of raising children. Under the scheme, eligible families receive a $1,000 tax credit per child. So if your income tax is $4,600 for the year and you have two children, you can expect to pay $2,600.
Low-income families can also receive a refund check is the tax credit is more than they owe in Federal income tax.
The bad news is the credit is due to go back down to just $500 in 2018. Let’s hope the politicians see sense before then.
WE LOVE THEM!
In 2017, the US Department of Agriculture released a report detailing how much we Americans spend on our children. As you can see from their info-graphic, the total cost of raising a child until their 18th birthday is $233,610. That’s a heck of a lot of money for 1 child. How about 2!?
Breaking it all down, the cost per year is stated as between $12,680 to $13,900. Now remember, this is based on a “middle-income family” with a total income ranging from $59,200 to $107,400.
With things like housing, food, child care and health-care it’s really hard to save money. However, 14% of the total amount is clothing and “Miscellaneous”, in other words – toys, games and perhaps leisure activities. To put this amount into real money, that’s $32,705 and change. Just under $2,000 per year for each of our children. This is where we can take control of our expenditure and try and either trim that number down, or get the very most for that $2,000.

We’re Here Thru All Stages Of Life
Like many other mothers, before our first baby came along I overspent a bit. Well, more than a bit!
I’ve come to realize that when you buy things for a baby, the maternal instinct is really taken advantage of. I often wonder why things like baby bedding is so expensive. A newborn pillow from Pottery Barn costs the same or more than an adult pillow – and it’s half the size.
The same thing goes for mattresses, comforters, sheets, you name it! Not only that, but we can expect to get more years of use out of an adult pillow, too. I used bedding as an example but it’s the same with a lot of products aimed at babies and toddlers. Once you actually have a child and compare the prices to adult products, it’s really eye-opening.
There is also a tendency to be over-paranoid about our baby’s safety as well. To be honest, the only reason I didn’t buy one of those high-tech movement sensors is that I couldn’t afford too. Our budget was eaten away by the crib, stroller, sterilization equipment, breast pump, etc, etc.
On the plus side, there are a lot more suppliers of baby products these days. So that helps give us a better selection. If we also network and shop around we can get some really good deals, too.
When they’re old enough to walk, they’re old enough to get into a lot of trouble! Not only do toddlers need an extra pair of eyes on them at all times, but they
need another round of spending.
Things like safety gates, walkers, squeaky shoes, tricycles and those cool RV cars need to be weighed up and bought. They’re also at an age now where they can play with toys that help they’re learning and development.
Once they get a bit older we can stop watching them 24/7, but they still need our unconditional love and support. Now there’s all manner of things to buy for school and hobbies, too. Hobbies. It’s only natural for kids to want to try a bit of everything until they find their niche. However, it’s hard not to get just a little bit angry when you spend $50 on a guitar and they quit after 6 weeks!
Fortunately, kids staples like bikes, gadgets, toys and video games never go out of fashion. But then again, knowing what toy or gadget is the latest fad (especially when Christmas comes round) that’s the important bit. We’ll save you money and hopefully a bit of time too by helping you out with this part!
By the time your little angel has become a teenager, they’ve probably outgrown one or two things. That “Frozen” bed set you think you brought just last Christmas was actually the one-before-last. Now the whole room needs a revamp to keep up with their developing personality and identity. And a lock, too.
The cool and hip “Abercrombie and Fitch” closet fillers you bought are kept in their “too small” closet….It’s also probably about that time to think about a car and car insurance as well. And college…
On the plus side, the “end” is almost in sight. That sounds bad I know! However, one of the hardest things to do is to try and stay relevant in your teenager’s life. And being taken for granted. Let’s not forget that!
Society is quick to “Blame the Parents” if a kid takes a wrong turn. But this right here is all the “behind-the-scenes” stuff we parents do to get the job done right! It’s pretty much a thankless task but I’m sure you’ll agree it’s satisfying all on it’s own.
A surprisingly large number of Americans don’t have 529 College Saving Plans. This is really surprising to me. I guess they think they are not worthwhile. Well, the 529 Plan can help pay for your child’s tuition, room and board and books. They are tax free up to $14,000 per year. Also, the minimum contribution amount is just $10.
This means that if other members of your family don’t know what to buy your teenager as a gift (and who really does?!) they can also make tax-free contributions. You can also encourage your own teenager to make contributions out of things like summer jobs, too. It’s difficult, but once they get into the habit of saving hopefully it’ll stick for when they start work, too.

What humidity and air temperature should be in the room of a newborn
Published: 11/23/2018Updated: 05/31/2022
The birth of a child in a family is a very important and joyful event. However, along with happy moments comes great responsibility.
Parents are faced with the task of creating the most comfortable conditions for the growth and development of their baby. From the first days of life, it is important to pay special attention to the microclimate in the room where the newborn is most of the time.
To avoid overheating or vice versa hypothermia, it is necessary to create an optimal temperature in the nursery, as well as provide a sufficient level of humidity.
Optimal room temperature for a newborn
Unlike an adult, in a baby, the mechanism of thermoregulation of the body has not yet been fully debugged, therefore, from the first
days of life, the baby should be at a comfortable temperature for him. This will prevent overheating or
on the contrary, hypothermia of the body.
To date, a clear opinion has been formed in medicine regarding what should be the temperature in the nursery
room. According to the standard, the temperature regime should be maintained in the range of 18-20 degrees. It has been proven that such
values are sufficient for the natural course of all vital processes in the body of a newborn.
However, many pediatricians still deviate somewhat from the standardized indicators and recommend creating in
baby’s room temperature in the range of 22-24 degrees. While swimming, it can be raised to 25 degrees.
Why monitor the temperature in the nursery?
The temperature in the nursery is an important indicator on which the general well-being and mood of the baby depends.
The consequences of non-compliance with the optimal temperature regimes can be:
- Overheating — even during sleep, the baby undergoes metabolic processes. During this active work in
body accumulates a certain amount of heat. Surplus can be released in one of the following ways: through
breath or through the skin of a newborn.
At high air temperature in the room, the removal of excess heat through breathing is significantly more difficult.
Then the only way out is sweating.
The child begins to sweat actively, which leads to the following undesirable consequences:- pulse quickens,
- the newborn becomes restless and does not sleep well,
- redness and rashes (prickly heat) appear on delicate skin, which brings significant discomfort
baby, - difficulty breathing.
-
Undercooling is the opposite of overheating. May occur when the air temperature drops
in the nursery below the normative values. It is also a very dangerous condition that often causes
the development of colds in a baby (ARI, SARS).
There are a number of typical signs that a newborn is cold:- skin becomes pale,
- the baby starts to tremble,
- breathing quickens,
- frequent hiccups appear,
- the child becomes restless and may refuse to eat.
The easiest and most affordable way to control the temperature in a room with a baby is to buy a thermometer. He
may be mechanical or electronic. There are also special mobile applications through which you can monitor
temperature regime in the nursery. We will talk about how to correct these indicators in case of deviation from the norm.
further.
Separately, it is worth mentioning that not only temperature plays an important role in the thermoregulation of a newborn
air in the room, but also clothes. It often seems to parents that the child is cold and they begin it strenuously.
wrap up. The result is natural — the baby sweats, resulting in diaper rash, dermatitis.
Humidity level in baby’s room
The level of humidity in the nursery is another important indicator that must be monitored in order for the child to
felt comfortable.
At different times of the year, the humidity in the room may change. Also, its value depends on the mode of operation of the battery and even on
wall conditions. For example, during the heating season, the humidity in the apartment reaches no more than 22-20%.
For a newborn, this is very dry air. Its impact leads to the appearance of the following negative signs:
bacteria
Sometimes the opposite happens when the humidity level in the room is too high. For example, if the walls have a bad
waterproofing, then after rain in the room dampness can be strongly felt.
High humidity is also undesirable for a newborn, as it is a favorable environment for active
reproduction of pathogenic microorganisms. Moreover, mold is a frequent companion of dampness, and it represents
serious danger to the baby. Its spores cause many diseases of the respiratory system (asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia
etc.).
In order to avoid these unpleasant consequences, it is very important to ensure that the air is not too dry or vice versa
too hydrated.
According to medical consensus, the optimum humidity for children is 40-60%.
You can control the level of humidity in the children’s room using a special device — a hygrometer. It’s for sale
both individually and together with a thermometer. But there is another more convenient option. We’ll talk about it a little.
Later.
Creating an optimal microclimate in the nursery: general tips
To prevent your baby from sweating and overheating, and also from discomfort from too dry air, perform
the following general recommendations:
- In the summer, when it is hot outside, it is difficult to create the necessary coolness in the nursery on your own. For
The solution to this problem is to install an air conditioning system. It can be in the baby’s room or in
adjacent room.
The main rule is that in no case should air currents have a direct effect on the newborn.
To exclude such a possibility, it is better to take the baby to another room while the air conditioner is running. - Nursery needs to be ventilated more often (every 4-5 hours) — fresh air is needed to saturate the room
oxygen, as well as the normalization of temperature and humidity. - During the heating season, the radiators are very hot in many apartments.
Sometimes the air temperature can
rise to 26 degrees. A newborn in such conditions will be uncomfortable.
If you do not have a switch on the radiator, then it should be covered with a dense cloth or any other structure.
This will prevent further heating. - Provide a free flow of air for the child — often parents put bumpers in the crib and hang
canopy on top. From the outside, these designs look spectacular, but this is where their usefulness ends.
Canopies and blind sides restrict the flow of oxygen to the baby, because of which he begins to sweat, bad
sleeping.
Another problem with these structures is that they collect a lot of dust. Without regular washing, the child may
an allergic reaction occurs. - Try not to wrap your baby unnecessarily and carefully select the composition of fabrics. It must be
exclusively natural material, since the skin does not breathe in synthetics, the child begins to overheat and sweat.
Please note that temperatures and humidity levels may vary in different parts of the nursery. For example, near
radiators, the air is always hotter and drier. In the window area, on the contrary, it can blow cold. To the baby
it was comfortable and safe, it is better to place the crib away from the battery and the window.
Effective methods for maintaining normal temperature and humidity in the nursery
In an age of active development and implementation of technology, parents no longer need to use «grandmother’s advice» to create
in the nursery of a suitable microclimate. Today, many devices and devices have been created that perfectly cope with this
task.
To maintain the optimal temperature in the nursery, you can purchase a DANFOSS ECO thermostat.
With this device, you can control the heating power from your smartphone. It works through the MagicAir system.
In order to have fresh clean air in the children’s room, you need to purchase a breather. This is a convenient ventilation system,
which will allow you to safely ventilate the room and clean the incoming air flows from street dust, wool
animals, exhaust fumes and unpleasant odors.
You can create the right level of humidity for your baby with a humidifier. This is a climate control device
makes the air more humid. The stores offer different models: steam,
ultrasonic. From point of view
safety, for a nursery it is better to purchase the latter option. In addition, they work quieter, which means they will not interfere
baby to sleep.
In order not to bother with measuring air temperature and humidity, you can purchase a smart microclimate system
MagicAir. This is a compact gadget that simultaneously solves two tasks:
- measures air quality indicators (carbon dioxide saturation, temperature, humidity),
- manages climate technology (breather).
All data will be displayed on the screen of your smartphone. At the same time, adjusting the air temperature/humidity to
desired values can be done manually or automatically. In the latter case, the MagicAir system as needed
will independently start the climate control equipment.
Creating a favorable microclimate for a newborn is one of the most important tasks. Health depends on it
the baby and his mood, and therefore your peace of mind. Grow healthy and don’t get sick!
Children’s room temperature and humidity | Mamovediya
Children’s room is the place where children’s health begins. The most important thing is what kind of air we have when we sleep. There are two important parameters for maintaining the health of the baby — temperature and humidity.
Sometimes young parents think that the warmer the room where the baby is, the better for him, but this is an erroneous opinion. For the well-being of the baby, acceptable air temperature is 18-21 degrees . But sometimes parents, trying to create comfortable conditions for the baby, heat an additional room, begin to dress and cover the child very warmly, not suspecting that this may lead to overheating. If the child has become lethargic, often wakes up, is naughty, check — perhaps the child is too warmly dressed.
There is an opinion that in the room where the baby is bathed, the air temperature should be several degrees higher so that the baby does not get cold. If you bathe a child in a room where the air temperature is higher than usual, then the baby may freeze in his usual conditions. Bathing should be at the air temperature in which the baby is used to being, after that it is enough to wrap the baby in a warm towel.
What causes overheating or hypothermia of the baby
In a newborn baby, metabolic processes proceed much faster than in an adult, and overheating can lead to heat accumulation in the body. The baby gets rid of excess heat when breathing, as well as through the skin. If the temperature in the room is high, the process of heat transfer through breathing becomes difficult, and the return through the skin begins, that is, the baby begins to sweat. As a result, sweating, urticaria, dermatitis may occur. Therefore, it is very important to prevent overheating and to monitor the optimal climate in the baby’s room. Make air baths for the baby more often, putting the naked one in the crib for 10-15 minutes . A child who is always dressed can catch a cold much faster from the slightest draft than one who is accustomed to coolness. Only in the hands of parents is the health of the child, how the baby’s body will be accustomed to and to what environment, so it will work in the future.
Also, you should not cool the room too much with the help of an air conditioner in summer, because going out with the baby for a walk, there will be a sharp temperature drop and the baby may get sick.
Hypothermia is also no less dangerous for the baby, as it entails colds, reduced immunity and the development of various inflammatory processes . To understand that the baby is cold, just touch his feet and the back of his head, they will be cold.
Humidity for baby
Acceptable humidity in a baby’s room is considered to be 50-70% . But depending on the season, the humidity of the air varies. In summer it is higher, but with the beginning of the heating season, air humidity can drop to 30-35%. Low humidity dries the baby’s mucous membranes, this leads to the formation of crusts in the nose (sometimes there may be grunting), makes breathing and sucking difficult , the baby does not sleep well and becomes restless.
To measure the humidity and temperature in the room, a special device is used — hygrometer . If the humidity in the room is not sufficient, you can increase it yourself, here are some ways:
- wet cleaning several times a day
- regularly ventilate the room
- a container of water near the radiators
- hang wet towels in the room
- arrange a corner with indoor plants
However, despite all this, the effect will not last all day, but only about 2-3 hours .
