We all know newborns are awesome and authentically adorable — but the baby-name-choosing process? That one can be absolutely abhorrent. So why not start at the very beginning? (If it was good enough for Julie Andrews…) Whether you’re aiming for the Jewish practice of naming your child using the first letter of a deceased relative’s name, or are looking for some admirable alliteration among sibling names (twins named Addison and Allison, oh my!) or just in the market for a nice vowel pairing with your last name, try combing through our list of baby names beginning with “A.”

SpongeBob SquarePants is a yellow sponge that lives underwater in the Pacific Ocean in a two-story pineapple house in the town of Bikini Bottom, along with his neighbor Squidward and best friend Patrick. His relentless cheerfulness gets on his grumpy Squidward’s nerves. He also attends a driver training course run by the paranoid Mrs. Puff. SpongeBob’s other friends are Gary, his pet snail; Pearl, a teenage whale; and Sandy Cheeks, a Texas squirrel in a space suit.
In the first episode, SpongeBob SquarePants tries to get a job at a local fast food restaurant called the Krusty Krab with the help of his best friend Patrick. Mr. Krabs, the owner of the restaurant, and Squidward, an employee of the Krusty Krab and SpongeBob’s next door neighbor, find SpongeBob unsuitable for the job and send him on a fictional mission to obtain a special mechanical shovel. Later, crowds of gluttonous anchovies stop at the diner and demand to be fed. SpongeBob somehow finds the spatula and uses it to feed the anchovies’ hunger. Mr. Krabs then welcomes him as his new chef, much to Squidward’s dismay.
Wanting to keep the front yard clean, Squidward finds a small seashell and throws it into SpongeBob’s yard. SpongeBob notices a shell and decides to use his powerful electric «reef blower» to remove the shell from his yard. Squidward doesn’t realize the havoc his little act will cause and how it will ruin his peaceful day.
Later, SpongeBob meets a squirrel named Sandy, who invites SpongeBob to her house, but when he arrives, he is surprised to find that there is no water. He tries to act like he’s used to Sandy’s air, despite the fact that he needs water to breathe. Later, Patrick enters the cabin, not knowing there is no water. Sandy finds SpongeBob and Patrick shriveled up and gives them «water helmets» to fix the problem.
One day, SpongeBob builds and opens a bubble stand, charging 25 cents per bubble, much to Squidward’s dismay. Patrick approaches the booth and asks to try it, but fails. SpongeBob offers to teach him and demonstrates his special bubble blowing technique, which allows you to blow bubbles of various shapes and sizes. Squidward tries to impress them by blowing a bubble without the SpongeBob method, but fails. He ends up blowing up a huge bubble using all of the techniques SpongeBob taught Patrick and yelling at the blow wand in anger. SpongeBob and Patrick congratulate Squidward, who thanks them and returns to his house. However, a giant bubble covers Squidward’s house and sends him flying into the air.
One day, SpongeBob accidentally rips his pants in an attempt to impress Sandy, causing everyone to laugh hysterically. SpongeBob drives off feeling embarrassed and sad, but the fish praises him for having a good laugh, making him realize the comedic potential of his accidental stunt, causing him to keep repeatedly deliberately tearing his pants as a prank. The joke is initially liked by the residents, but it soon becomes stale and ends up going too far when SpongeBob pretends to actually die while surfing, driving away the beachgoers, including Sandy. He later meets the three «biggest losers on the beach» and they ask SpongeBob what happened to him. SpongeBob tells his story and apologizes through the song, bringing Sandy and the rest of the beach goers back.
SpongeBob and Patrick take Squidward, who is recovering from a bicycle accident in a full body cast, on a «jellyfishing» (jellyfishing sport) trip. When they arrive at the Jellyfish Fields, Squidward is stung by a jellyfish, so he goes after her to get revenge. He manages to catch the jellyfish and triumphantly strikes the jellyfish queen with his net. The jellyfish queen stalks him, attacking him with a massive stinger. The next day, a bandaged SpongeBob and Patrick go to Squidward’s house, now on life support, to apologize, only to be chased away by a jellyfish caught by Squidward. As Squidward laughs at this, he is again discovered and stung by the jellyfish queen.
Soon the Krusty Krab is in chaos when Plankton, Mr. Krabs’ business rival, tries to steal the Krabby Patty formula for his own restaurant. At night, Plankton tries to befriend SpongeBob by asking him for a Krabby Patty, but he loudly and boldly refuses and runs home. Later that night, Plankton enters SpongeBob’s head through the pores and makes his way into SpongeBob’s brain. He attaches a mind control device to his brain and bends SpongeBob to his will, causing him to go to the Krusty Krab, get a Krabby Patty, and bring it to Plankton’s restaurant, where he intends to have SpongeBob put it into an ingredient analyzer. SpongeBob regrets letting the Krabby Patty down, and his appetizing description of the sandwich causes a hungry Plankton to jump out of SpongeBob’s head towards the sandwich. He lands in his own analyzer and is trapped in his computer Karen (according to the analyzer he is 1% evil and 9% evil).9% — from hot gas). SpongeBob then leaves while Plankton begs him to come back.
Squidward destroys SpongeBob and Patrick’s friendship after he gets annoyed with them texting each other while blowing bubbles and laughing. Things eventually go awry when SpongeBob and Patrick fight over who Squidward’s best friend is. Squidward decides to invite Patrick and SpongeBob to a dinner party to restore their friendship.
SpongeBob goes to driving school but keeps failing his test. He shares this information with Patrick, who decides to secretly give instructions to SpongeBob during the test via walkie-talkie. After realizing that he is cheating, SpongeBob goes into a tantrum and drives wildly around the track while his driving teacher, Mrs. Puff, desperately tries to stop him. SpongeBob refuses to listen, causing him to crash the boat and fail the test again.
The Krusty Krab gets a call from a customer ordering pizza, so Mr. Krabs decides to have Squidward and SpongeBob deliver it. Along the way, SpongeBob and Squidward get stuck in the desert while Squidward tries to eat the pizza. Squidward becomes increasingly annoyed with SpongeBob’s survival skills, but is impressed when SpongeBob manages to use the rock to get back home. When they finally reach the buyer’s house, the buyer is angry that he didn’t get the drink he supposedly ordered as well. SpongeBob is crying because the customer won’t take the pizza. Outraged that the customer made SpongeBob cry, and after they have traveled through the desert to deliver the pizza, Squidward knocks on the door and throws the pizza in the customer’s face. As they leave, SpongeBob tells Squidward it’s time to get back to work, and he groans in annoyance when it turns out that the house they delivered the pizza to is across the street from the Krusty Krab.
A horde of hungry nematodes comes to town and eats SpongeBob’s pineapple house (and other things). After this happens, SpongeBob reluctantly plans to return to his parents, though he will miss his old home and friends greatly. Squidward is ecstatic at the thought of SpongeBob leaving. However, SpongeBob tries to stay with Patrick. Squidward refuses to let SpongeBob stay with him. On the day he leaves town, SpongeBob finds a small pebble left from his house and buries it where his house used to be. SpongeBob starts crying and his tears are absorbed by the pebble (which is actually a seed), causing his pineapple house to grow back, which crushes Squidward.
SpongeBob and Patrick want to meet their favorite superheroes, Superman of the Sea and Barnacle Man, who are now elderly and living in a nursing home. They try to get them out of retirement, much to the annoyance of the superheroes, who only need a TV repair. SpongeBob and Patrick pull off various tricks to help them retire, and are ultimately successful when the two heroes treat them like villains and use their superpowers to force them to leave the nursing home. SpongeBob and Patrick then watch The New Adventures of Sea Superman and Barnacle Man on TV, in which the two play chess and complain that their phone needs to be fixed.
Mrs. Puff then makes SpongeBob the lobby watcher for the day. SpongeBob also means the whole city by this and patrols the city, but this leads to chaos. SpongeBob invites Patrick as an assistant. They learn that the maniac is causing trouble around the city. Eventually, SpongeBob sees a wanted poster and realizes that he is a maniac. The police arrive to arrest him and Mrs. Puff appears to explain the situation to them, saying that he is her responsibility. The police interpret this as taking responsibility for the crimes and she is arrested.
SpongeBob then brings home a wild jellyfish and has a big dance party. However, the wild jellyfish becomes addicted to the dance music and continues through the night before inviting more jellyfish to the party. The next morning, SpongeBob wakes up to find his living room filled with hundreds of dancing jellyfish and tries to get them to leave, but ends up smashing the music player, causing the jellyfish to go berserk. Gary’s pet snail calms them down by clicking his eyes and creating a rhythm, SpongeBob uses Gary to lead Medusa back to the Jellyfish Fields.
One night, SpongeBob and Patrick sneak onto Sandy’s rocket ship. As they do so, Patrick accidentally starts the engine, but they land back in Bikini Bottom. Thinking they are on the moon, they capture everyone, thinking they are aliens. Eventually SpongeBob believes Patrick is an alien. SpongeBob launches a rocket to return home. Soon, SpongeBob looks out the window and realizes his mistake, as the captured «aliens» want to talk to him.
In the next episode, Mr. Krabs gives his daughter Pearl a pair of old boots as a cheap birthday present, but when she refuses to take them, he gives them to SpongeBob, claiming that the boots are real chef’s boots. SpongeBob enjoys the boots and their high-pitched «squeaky» sounds, but the noises the boots make begin to annoy Mr. Krabs, eventually to the point where he can’t stand the sounds anymore. Because of this, Mr. Krabs steals the shoes and buries them under the Krusty Krab. The next day, SpongeBob comes to work crying because he can’t find his boots. Mr. Krabs, feeling guilty for stealing the boots, starts going crazy and eventually confesses to stealing the boots and then frying them in a deep fryer and eating them.
SpongeBob decides he wants to live in the wild with jellyfish, so he quits his job at the Krusty Krab and leaves his old life to live in Jellyfish Fields. Mr. Krabs is sure to be back within a day. Patrick and Sandy have a picnic to try and convince SpongeBob to come back.
