57 Baby Names Inspired by Food

Question: Where were you when you found out Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin named their eldest child Apple? FWIW, I was in a corner deli with my dad on a Sunday morning and read it on the cover of the New York Post. It’s stuck with me ever since.

While The Post roasted the now “consciously uncoupled” couple’s choice, the name was the talk of the town for…ever, really. I mean, we’re still talking about it now! And it’s actually hella cute.

But you don’t have to be a celebrity of Gwyneth caliber to give your baby a name inspired by your favorite fruit, herb, or five-course meal! In fact, names inspired by food are probably more common than you think. I mean, it’s hard picking out a name for a tiny person you haven’t even met yet. So why not give them a name inspired by something you actually know and love? Like cheese. No, I’m not telling you to name your child Parmigiano. But Brie? Now that’s adorable as f*ck and the star of every charcuterie board.

Below, find 57 of the best baby names inspired by food that aren’t weird (no one’s gonna name their kid Broccoli).

A cute gender-neutral name for bread lovers everywhere. It’s usually short for Ryder, but Rye is cute enough to stand on its own.

4. Java

I know you’ve joked about naming your firstborn Coffee during an 8 a.m. meeting, but what if I told you that you actually could without getting weird looks? Java is the perfect ode to your favorite beveragino.

5. Lemon

Perfect for a summer baby. According to Nameberry.com, around 25 babies are named Lemon every year. But I’m really in it for the matching outfits à la Kris Jenner and Penelope Disick.

9. Melina

If you’re not ready to fully commit to the food name with Honey, then go with this one! “Melina” actually means “little honey” in Greek. It’s perfect for that little touch of sweetness.

10. Maple

Currently, Maple sits at #801, but given that Jason Bateman named his second daughter after the tree in 2012, Nameberry predicts the name will continue to rise the ranks in the coming years.

20. Barack

The first name of our former POTUS—a name he inherited from his Kenyan father—is also a Hungarian brandy made from apricots.

21. Coco

Parents, including celebs like Courteney Cox and David Arquette, often opt to spell Coco without the “a” at the end, but the name sounds the same any way you spell it. Coco is ranked #499. (And for moms and dads who aren’t sure they want to commit, don’t forget that you can always use Coco as a nickname.)

22. Jasmine

Often associated with Princess Jasmine from Aladdin, Jasmine, which was ranked #136 in 2015, is the name of a spice and a Persian flower.

23. Bartlett

Fine, it’s not the same as naming your kid Pear, but it is a variety of the fruit. It also means “son of the earth.”

24. Madeleine

Calling to mind those pretty French cookies (and also meaning, quite literally, “woman from Magdala”), Madeleine is ranked #376. Note though: If you’re looking to name your baby after the girl in the old house in Paris that was covered with vines, she spells it without the second “e.

30. Roe

Whether or not you’re a fan of the classic sushi accoutrement, Roe is a truly adorable name.

While the drink has remained consistently popular, the name for babies peaked way back in the ’60s. But that just means there won’t be three other kids in the same class with the same name.

32. Candy

With a name like this, you’d really have no good reason not to blast Aaron Carter’s “I Want Candy” 24/7.

33. Harissa

The spicy chili pepper paste is a staple in North Africa, and it’s also a very pretty name.

34. Daisy

Daisy originally was primarily seen as a nickname for Margaret, but thanks to loads of pop culture inclusions (The Great Gatsby, Driving Miss Daisy, Mystic Pizza, to name a few), it’s now a popular name all on its own. Coming in at #169, a daisy is an edible flower that makes for a tasty addition to any salad.

35. Juniper

Channel your love of gin and tonics in a slightly more subtle way. Juniper ranks at #281 and is a great nod to the earthy, piney flavors of your favorite drink.

36. Anise

The spice anise tastes similar to black licorice (which is underrated!), but the sweet name is definitely a gem.

37. Dill

Not just your favorite kind of pickle. Dill is a solidly cute name that, of course, was held by Dil Pickles from Rugrats. (His full name was technically Dylan, go figure. )

38. Cinnamon

The perfect baby name for the parent who rushes out to get a PSL the second Starbucks starts offering ’em. Cinnamon isn’t super popular yet (it’s not even ranking on Nameberry), so if giving your kid an unusual name is important to you, you should definitely consider it.

39. Katniss

The name is famously associated with the badass Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. Hard-core fans will remember that she was named after an edible plant.

40. Cherry

Cherry is a sweet name for a baby, although it has fallen in popularity over the years. But here’s hoping that the Harry Styles song of the same name boosts its popularity again.

41. Pepper

43. Benedict

Benedict Cumberbatch is the only person I can think of right now with this name (even though it ranks at #981 in popularity), but I can easily think of at least five kinds of eggs Benedict I’d love to devour right now.

44. Chip

Who wouldn’t want to be named after the best character in Beauty and the Beast AND the most delicious form of snack food?

45. Quince

The quince fruit itself may be a bit lumpy and oddly shaped, but it sure does make for a cute name for babies of any gender.

46. Barley

A subtle nod to the unsung hero of grains that brings us the magic that is beer.

47. Hazel

If the prettiness of the name itself doesn’t convince you, consider that Emily Blunt and John Krasinski named their first bb Hazel. The rest of the world has followed suit, and now the name ranks #42 in popularity.

48. Reuben

Yes, the Reuben is a delicious smoked meat sandwich, but who could forget the iconic season 2 American Idol winner Ruben Studdard? If you’re looking for a relatively uncommon name, know that Reuben ranks only #927, so you’re good there.

49. Lotus

The flower and its tubers are a staple in salads, soups, stir-fries, and teas, but it’s also a delicate name for an infant.

50. Saffron

British actress Saffron Burrows may have put this name on the mainstream map, but Saffron, which currently sits at #714 on Nameberry’s list, has seen an increase in popularity over the years.

51. Kale

No, it isn’t just the leafy green that’s having a moment. The name Kale is having one as well. The name peaked in the U.S. in 2008 after Shia LaBeouf played Kale Brecht in the movie Disturbia, but according to the Social Security’s baby name database, it ranked #972 in 2014.

52. Clementine

Both model Claudia Schiffer and actor Ethan Hawke chose the name Clementine, which means “peace and happiness,” for their baby girls. Clementine is sweet and unique, but considering it ranks #685 on Nameberry, don’t be shocked if there’s another Clemmy in your daughter’s school.

53. Peaches

Popularized by the late Peaches Geldof, the British TV personality and model, this name is both hip and cute.

54. Nori

Thanks to Kimye’s eldest daughter, North West, Nori has seen a steady rise in popularity over the past few years. Traditionally thought of as seaweed used for sushi, Nori is being used as a name for both boys and girls.

55. Kobe

As the story goes, basketball star Kobe Bryant was named after a Japanese steakhouse, which, obviously, served Kobe beef. Clearly, the name has resonated with people, as it’s currently #574.

56. Olive

After Drew Barrymore named her daughter Olive, the world seemed to let out a collective “awww.” And then everyone immediately copied the actress. The Social Security database shows that Olive had a banger year in 2014, coming in at #282.

57. Rosemary

The deliciously scented herb is also a perennially popular name. Although you might think of Rosemary as rather old-timey, the name has had a resurgence recently—as recently as 2014, it was ranking #454, according to Social Security.

We select names for dog-boys

10/30/2013
How to choose the right name for a little dog?

Don’t be upset if your boy has a long dissonant pedigree name — you have the right to accustom the dog to the nickname that seems most appropriate to you, and when registering at the exhibition you will indicate both names of the dog.

The names of puppies of the same litter always begin with one letter, which is determined by the kennel club for private breeders. Sometimes breeders register their own factory prefix, adding it to the dog’s name. The name according to the pedigree is entered in the documents of the animal and may indicate its belonging to a particular nursery, the year of birth, litter number, and the names of the parents.

If you can’t wait to start practicing — see the full list of names at the bottom of the article 🙂

Rules for choosing a nickname for boys’ dogs

The name serves to attract the dog’s attention. There are several general selection rules:

  1. The name must be easily recognized by the dog. To do this, choose a monosyllabic (GRAF, BARS) or two-syllable (ARBAT, PIRAT) word that will be easy enough to pronounce with different intonations (vocative, strict, affectionate). You can use an abbreviation of the pedigree name, or you can watch the puppy and give a name based on his character and habits.
  2. The sound of the nickname must be different from the sound of commands. It will be difficult for a dog to distinguish, for example, the name FARS from the command «Fas».
  3. Nickname should be euphonious, not offending anyone’s dignity. It is advisable to resist the temptation to name a puppy after a harmful neighbor or use foreign words that sound dissonant in Russian.

It is unlikely that you will feel comfortable in a public place calling your pet with the phrase “Julio, come to me!” etc.

Selection for small breeds

When choosing a name for a small breed dog, you should remember that those associated with large representatives will not suit you. For example, MUHTAR or BEETHOVEN will not suit the baby at all. On the other hand, some nicknames, on the contrary, will be perceived by others as good humor. These include: JIMBO, CHUCK, ARNI, REX.

Choosing names for spaniel girls and more. Various options depending on the breed!

What to do next?

After choosing a name for the boy, pronounce it during all the important events for the puppy: when feeding, during games, when practicing commands.

Memorization will go faster if you will, as they say, «seize the moment», i.e. use cases when his attention is completely directed to you. For example, when a puppy joyfully rushes towards you, say the nickname and the command «Come to me», then reward with a treat.

Call him by his name before each feeding and watch for reactions: tail movements, upturned ears and an attentive look — these signs express interest and can serve as indicators that the puppy is gradually forming an association with the nickname.

Usually memorization occurs within a week. At this time, encouragement for the correct response is required. Later, the number of rewards can be reduced by replacing them with affectionate or encouraging words.

Common mistakes

  • Name too long.
By the time you say: «MAXIMILIAN, phew!», your dog will already have time to commit an offense. Agree that «MAX, fu!» pronunciation would be easier and faster.
  • Cool name.
It may be fun at first, but the name is chosen for years. Think about whether you will laugh the same way in a few years? And besides, your dog may get used to associating laughter with his name, and will assume that a laughing person is calling him to come over. A beautiful name for a dog-boy is, of course, great, but you should not go too far with it.
  • Choosing a human name as nickname.
Ideally, when the nickname is unique, and when it is pronounced, all the surrounding dogs do not run and passers-by do not look back. If you still really want to use a human name, then choose rare names and do not forget about rule number 3 — euphony.

About dog names

It is interesting to note that there is the same fashion for dog names as for human names. During the heyday of canine hunting 18-19For centuries, one could often come across nicknames based on the features of the appearance or character of the animal, for example, ROBBING, SCARING, BITE.

At the beginning of the 20th century, «mythological» nicknames HERCULES, HERMES, ANTEY came into fashion. In the war and post-war years, BOLD, FAITHFUL, JULBARS, DINA and words formed from geographical names, for example, AMUR, BAIKAL, DON, were popular.

Dogs-cosmonauts gave rise to a wave of GINGERS, BELOKS, BUTTONS, ARROWS and BEARS. The era of perestroika and glasnost brought with it a fashion for names that were foreign words pronounced in Russian: ORANGE, BIG, BLACK, SMILE, SKY, REDY.

Modern nicknames are characterized by the use of the names of popular people and literary heroes. Also, in recent years, Russian names such as ZHORZH, VIY, YURA, etc. have become more and more popular.

Often the nickname can indicate the field of activity of the owner of the dog and his hobbies. For example, programmers can call their baby UNIX, abbreviated as UNI.

If you believe that the name can determine the fate, then its choice must be taken responsibly. Watch your pet, his behavior will surely tell you which nickname will be the most suitable.

Choosing a name for a boy is an exciting and responsible task. After all, by doing so, parents program the fate of their child. Each name has its own energy, endowing the owner with certain qualities, enhancing his talents or, conversely, revealing weaknesses. In addition, it must be taken into account that in the future, it will become a patronymic for his children, which means it will affect the life of your grandchildren. The site «i-sonnik.ru» will help you understand how to name your son so that he is lucky.

How to name a boy in 2022

Boys born in 2022 grow calm and even slow. They prefer quiet pastime to active games. They love loneliness and do not seek to make as many friends as possible. But thanks to the makings of a leader, people are drawn to them themselves.

Children born in 2022 like to make and make something. The designer will be the most successful gift. But they are overconfident and sensitive to criticism. Therefore, parents, before making a remark, should think carefully so as not to offend their son. Otherwise, he will rest and it will be impossible to convince him.

Useful tips on how to choose a name

Parapsychologists advise in the third trimester of pregnancy to start thinking about what to name your son, pronouncing various options aloud. Baby, he will be able to give you a sign that he liked. There is some truth in this, but this method should not be taken too literally.

Combination with last name

Please note that a boy will often hear his first name with a middle name or last name, starting from kindergarten and ending with work. And if a girl, when she gets married, changes her last name, then she remains with the guy for good, which adds responsibility.

The full name should be pronounced easily enough so that the interlocutor does not stutter, and the person does not worry about whether they will address him correctly. Speak different combinations, does the language get confused?

For a short patronymic, it is desirable to choose a longer name, and for a long one, on the contrary, a short one. For example, Adam Alexandrovich or Anatoly Ilyich.

It is necessary to take into account the compatibility of letters, so that 2 vowels or 2 consonants are not duplicated at the junction of words. Compare, Nikita Evgenievich and Nikita Bogdanovich.

Heaps of consonants, double R’s make pronunciation difficult. An unprepared person will get confused, creating an awkward situation. For example, Konstantin Nikolaevich or Igor Dmitrievich.

Ideally, if the stress in the middle name and first name falls on the same syllable. This will make the pronunciation more rhythmic.

Look at the initials the child will receive. F.I.O. forms a ridiculous or stupid word? Look for another option how to name the boy.

Think about how the child will be called at home in an affectionate diminutive.

Astrologers consider it a good sign if the mother’s or father’s name begins with the same letter as the child’s. For example, the parents of Tatyana and Timofey, then Timur will suit his son.

Sounds

Psychologists say that the presence of the letters «П» and «Р» subconsciously programs a person’s purposefulness, confidence and other leadership qualities. The sounds «L», «M» and «N», on the contrary, stimulate the development of a calm and kind character.

However, these traits can be softened or neutralized if there are many children with the same name nearby. For example, in a class where more than half are Petrov, everyone will not be able to become a leader, someone will have to “obey”.

How not to name a boy

Psychologists do not recommend naming after the father. Subconsciously, the heir will begin to subconsciously compare himself with the head of the family. If the parent has achieved a lot, then the child can complex. If the father could not realize his full potential, the son will slow down his own success.

Firmly decided to give the same names? To avoid confusion, name the child by a synonymous name or its abbreviated form. For example, if dad is Vladimir, then the child is Vlad. Thus, you will reduce the emotional burden.

If you have an indeclinable surname, be careful with the names that occur in girls, for example, Eugene. Such a name can lead to stupid jokes from peers, which will negatively affect self-esteem.

Double names are inappropriate in the modern world. They will only create confusion and cause ridicule. Also, avoid naming your child unnecessarily unusually, after the protagonist of your favorite work. For example, Alpheus, Blaise, Negomir, Vasoy, Ocean or Megatron will provoke the appearance of self-doubt. This assumption is confirmed by scientists.

University of California conducted a student survey. The statistics revealed disappointing facts: complexes came with unusual and rare names. Researchers say that it was more difficult for such people to find their place in the team.

The main condition is that the name must be liked. Ideally combined with a patronymic and surname, corresponding to the calendar and the position of the stars, carrying a positive meaning, but annoying you will not work. Consider other options.
