25/25 Homer

Although this one still may have some «Simpson» vibes, it’s finally beginning to be remembered for its ancient Greek heritage instead.

Homer was a top 100 name from 1880 through 1915 and remained in the top 500 for 50 years after that. It dropped completely out of the top 1000 in 1983 and hasn’t been back on since.

Homer wrote The Iliad and The Odyssey, where the terms «homeric laugh» or the laughter of the gods and «homeric work» or work on a large scale were coined.

24/25 Dashiell

https://honeynclover. com/products/classic-blue-shirt

Dashiell, pronounced DASH-el, is completely unique. Though Nameberry.com has it ranked #129 last year, it has yet to be featured on the American top 1000 baby boy names.

Dashiell’s meaning is unknown. It is the Anglicized variation of the old French surname, de Chiel. Alice Cooper chose Dashiell in 1985, followed more recently by Cate Blanchett and Helen Fielding.

Dashiell Hammet is a famous detective writer, though he was born Samuel and used Dashiell because it was his mother’s maiden name. Dash is also an adorable nickname option.

23/25 Elvis

Elvis has been up and down the popularity charts since 1881 and entered the top 100 for a short time during the King’s reign in the late 50s and early 60s. However, Elvis, too much attached to Presley, dropped off the charts in 2011.

The meaning of the name Elvis is unknown, but it stems from the Irish saint Elvis of Munster, or the Irish Ailbhe.

While Presley is on the rise for girls, Elvis is strongly associated with both Elvis Presley and Costello. However, hipsters are trying to reinvent it.

22/25 Gulliver

Gulliver is another hipster name with Irish roots that has not yet been featured on the American popularity list. Though, it might not be long before this one makes its first appearance.

Gulliver is actually a Gaelic surname. The most notable Gulliver is probably that of Gulliver’s Travels, the adventurous novel written by Jonathan Swift.

Gulliver was also chosen by Gary Oldman, Damien Lewis and Helen McCrory for their sons. Though still unique, Gulliver is a perfect hipster baby name.

21/25 Ike

My favorite Ike is the character Richard Gere played on Runaway Bride, opposite of Julia Roberts. However, Ike had dropped off the popularity list long before that.

Ike began its journey on the charts in 1880 in the top 500 but would fall to the bottom just 20 years later. Ike fell completely off the list in 1957 and hasn’t reentered since.

Ike is a diminutive of Isaac, which is Hebrew for «laughter. » President Dwight Eisenhower went by Ike, and just like other nickname names, Ike is set to rise again.

20/25 Kingston

Kingston is a new one on the American list, but this one is rising quickly! This moniker entered the list in 2006 and was in the top 300 a year later. Kingston is just outside the top 100 at #134 today.

Kingston is English for «King’s Town.» It was first chosen by Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale for their son, giving it instant star power in 2006 and helping it rise fast.

Nickname King is also a bonus for this adorable moniker. It wouldn’t be surprising to see it in the top 100 next year.

19/25 Gus

This nickname name entered the popularity list in 1880 and was a top 500 name until almost 1950. Gus didn’t drop off the charts until 1978, but in 2016 reentered as the 999th most popular baby boy’s name.

This moniker is basically considered a nickname for any name with «gus» in it, like Augustus and Angus. It’s meaning is «great, magnificent. «

T.S. Elliot used Gus in his novel, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and both Dixie Chick Emily Robinson and actress Julie Bowen chose Gus for their sons.

18/25 Rudy

Though many of us still think of the classic football movie when we hear this name, Rudy is being reinvented as a new and improved hipster baby name.

Rudy entered the American list in 1886 and 30 years later broke the top 500, where it would stay until 1997. Rudy has never left the charts but is down to #857 today.

Rudy is a German diminutive of Rudolph, which means «famous wolf» and hasn’t been very popular since the red-nosed reindeer came on the scene. Jude Law chose Rudy for his son, perhaps making it cool once more.

17/25 Ambrose

Via: Picbear

Ambrose did pretty well on the popularity list in the late 1800s and early 1900s, but after dropping out of the top 500 in 1926 it was all downhill from there. Ambrose left the top 1000 by 1954 and hasn’t reentered since.

Ambrose is Latin for «immortal one.» It stems from the Greek term for «ambrosia» which is translated as «the food of the gods» and «belonging to the immortals.»

Saint Ambrose was the name of a 4th-century saint and also the name of Latin teachers who helped bring music into church services. Ambrose is also the patron saint of television.

16/25 Felix

This old-fashioned moniker has never really fallen out of favor, but beginning to reach its highest ranking ever. Felix has been in the top 400 since 1880 and is still ranked #246 today. Felix is also a top 100 name in 6 other countries.

15/25 Gabe

Pinterest

This nickname name had a short stint on the popularity list in 1880 until 1905 and then disappeared off the charts for good. However, hipster parents are beginning to adopt Gabe as a stand alone name.

Gabe is a short form of Gabriel, which means «God is my strength» and is still a top 100 name. There were only 100 babies named Gabe, compared to 10,000 named Gabriel last year.

You can join the masses and choose the overused Gabriel, or just jump right to the short form, Gabe right away.

14/25 Gordon

Gordon has had a pretty decent run on the popularity list. It entered in 1880 and was in the top 100 by 1912. It remained there for 30 years and in the top 500 for 50 more. Though it was off the charts for a few years, it has re-entered at #818.

Gordon is Scottish for «great hill. » Gordon began as a Scottish surname and was turned into the first name to honor the 19th-century hero, General Charles George Gordon.

Celebrity chef, Gordon Ramsay, Sesame Street character, Gordon Robinson, and Prime Minister, Gordon Brown have all brought this name back to life.

13/25 Hugo

Though American parents are a little behind, Hugo is an internationally adored name. It entered the popularity list in 1880 and has been up and down ever since, breaking into the top 500 several times, but never staying there long.

Hugo is now ranked #418 and is a top 100 name in 9 other countries. Nameberry.com believes America will catch on and predicts it to be ranked in the top 100 soon.

Hugo is a Latinized form of Hugh, which means «mind, intellect.» It was used in the Harry Potter series, is the name of the sci-fi writer awards and the name of the last president of Venezuela.

12/25 Luther

This surname name has a solid history on the American charts. It entered in the top 100 in 1880 and remained there for 20 years. It left the top 500 in 1973 and was completely kicked out of the top 1000 in 1994.

Luther is a German name that means «army people.» It began to be used as a first name to honor theologian and reformer, Martin Luther. More recently, it is being used to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

Luther is a solid choice with a rich history and has leader written all over it, just like its past name bearers have proven.

11/25 Silas

This Bible name has never been as popular as it is today. Though it entered the American list in 1880, it left the top 500 by 1936 and almost left the top 1000 several times after that. Today, Silas is ranked #120.

Silas is English from Latin and means «wood, forest.» Saint Silas accompanied Paul on his missionary journeys and was one of the earliest Christians.

It also stems from the Roman god of trees, Sylvanus, which is perhaps where it gets its woodsy and folksy imagery.

10/25 Bear

This rugged name has never been on the American popularity list, but it looks like it might be headed there very soon. Nameberry.com has it coming in at #133 last year.

Bear is an animal name that gained some popularity from British outdoor enthusiast and adventurer, Bear Grylls, who was actually born Edward Michael.

Kate Winslet, Alicia Silverstone, and Jamie Oliver all chose Bear for their sons. They just might have helped Bear become one of the new popular animal names like Fox.

9/25 Beckett

Portraits of a baby boy being held up in the air with a background of trees and countryside.

Though it sounds old-fashioned, Beckett is a new one on the popularity charts. It entered in 2006 and was in the top 500 two years later. Today, Beckett is ranked #226.

Beckett is both English and Irish and means «bee cottage.» It was originally used as a surname, like as infamous Irish playwright, Samuel Beckett.

This strong name is a favorite of celebrities. It was chosen by Melissa Etheridge, Conan O’Brien, Stella McCartney, Malcolm McDowell, Nicole Sullivan and Natalie Maines for all of their sons.

8/25 Cormac

Though Cormac is a top 100 name in Ireland and a top 1000 name in England, it has never been featured on the American list.

Cormac is Irish for «charioteer. » In Irish mythology, Cormac mac Airt was a high king of Ireland in the 2nd century. Cormac was also used for a character in two Harry Potter novels. Cormac McCarthy is an award-winning novelist.

Cormac, though deeply rooted in Irish history, has yet to make it onto the American list, but we have high hopes for this one, as do hipster parents.

7/25 Edison

Edison entered the popularity list in 1891 but struggled to hold a place and by 1959 it was completely kicked out of the top 1000. It reappeared in 2005 and has been slowly rising since.

Edison is English for «son of Edward.» Thomas Edison is probably the most famous name bearer, which makes me wonder why this one is only recently being discovered by modern parents.

Edison can become part of so many trends like the popular «E» name trend, the «son» name ending trend and the surname trend.

6/25 Huck

This adventure name has never been on the popularity list, nor has its full form, Huckleberry. However, Nameberry.com has Huck being ranked #561 last year.

Huck, though it’s a short form, will forever be linked to Mark Twain’s adventurous character, Huckleberry Finn. This imagery isn’t a bad one, and perfect for outdoor and adventure loving parents.

Though neither variation has been on the popularity list, Huck is more likely to appear before Huckleberry, as nickname names are a bigger trend right now, especially among hipster parents.

Mansur

General characteristics of the name “Mansur”

This name is translated from Arabic as “winner”, “one who wins”. A clean and tidy man with an easy character. Having started any business, moving thoughtfully, slowly, delving into all the details, and will definitely bring it to the end. Fantasy is well developed, constantly shares new ideas with others. A materialist, I fully agree with the saying «it is better to see once than hear seven times.» When faced with resistance, he becomes irritable. Touchy, but does not hold a grudge for a long time. He does not like loneliness, seeks to spend time in the company.

Mansur in business, in society

Mansur is endowed with such qualities of a born leader as: the ability to recognize a person’s talents, purposefulness, analytical mindset. However, Mansur could have achieved better results if he had not been so stubborn and listened to others, as he is a fan of stepping on a rake. He believes that compromise is the lot of the weak, and stands his ground to the last, which slows down the work process in the team and inflames the situation. He is attracted by the sphere of science, art, religion, as well as military affairs. If he wants to do business, then he should moderate his proud disposition and learn to ask for help and listen to advice.

Mansur as a child

Little Mansur is well-mannered and has excellent manners. Phlegmatic by nature, very slow and heavy on the rise. Shy and patient. Stubborn, it’s hard to convince him. If little Mansur wants to dress on his own, he will bring his mother to white heat: he will choose clothes for a long time and meticulously, then he will slowly pull his pants on, find out that he has put on the wrong thing, silently take it off, put it on again, choose a T-shirt . .. And all these actions take place against the backdrop of mother, who managed to dress herself during this time, evaporate, take off too much, change a few blouses and styling. As a reward for his mother’s patience, Mansur grows up as a complaisant and balanced boy.

Marseille

General characteristics of the name «Marseille»

According to the first version, the name «Marseille» is a variant of the pronunciation of the French name «Marcel». Similar-sounding names are used in Germany (Marcel), Spain (Marcelo), Romania (Marcel) and many other countries. Tatars call this name children in honor of Marcel Cachin (French communist). Marcel is a pure choleric. His plans for today include the conquest of Mars (the planet, as it seems to him, is named after him), visiting a couple of nightclubs and signing a dozen lucrative contracts (a combination of the last two points is welcome). Marcel resembles Carloson in character, only he has a larger propeller, and an awl in several places. An excellent diplomat (“calm, only calm”), proud of himself (“a man in the prime of life”) and full of enthusiasm (“well, shall we fly?”).

Marcel in business, in society

Marcel knows how to create an impression of himself as a person who controls everything and everything. However, in reality, he is unsure of himself. He is subconsciously looking for someone who could support him and give him the right direction: a friend, a mentor. For the same reason, he performs better as a subordinate than as a boss. Marseille is full of interesting ideas, but in order to bring his plans to life, he needs a team.

He hovers in the clouds all the time, can show generosity, and be left without a “penny for his soul”. It is difficult for him to «control himself», often showing aggression.
