Less popular girl names: Uncommon Girl Names to Explore and Love
Posted on12 uncommon and unusual girl names
Uncommon baby names can be tough to find – since, well, they’re uncommon. If you’re looking for a baby name that’s unusual, here are some of our favorites. Gathered from hundreds of thousands of parents who’ve shared their baby’s names with us, these names were given to just a handful of babies. With one of these unusual names, you can rest assured that your child won’t be one of many in class or on the playground.
Berlin
Berlin is the capital of and largest city in Germany, as well as an increasingly popular place-inspired baby name. (It’s also the name of an ’80s band responsible for the global chart-topper «Take my Breath Away,» made famous by Top Gun.) The etymology of this place name is unclear, but it’s thought to come from the old West Slavic word birl, meaning swamp, since Berlin is located in a lowland, on the banks of the River Spree.
Ciel
Ciel is the French word for sky and heaven. If you’re attracted to names like Sky or Skylar but want something less popular, consider Ciel, the Spanish Cielo, or the variations Cielle, Ciela, or Ciella.
Dove
Dove follows in the footsteps of other bird names like Robin and Wren, with the added symbolism of peace. We love Dove’s ethereal simplicity. The dove is a religious symbol in Christianity and Buddhism. This beautiful name is increasingly popular, probably thanks to actress Dove Cameron – though it still hasn’t cracked into the top 1,000 baby names in the United States.
Fleur
Fleur, which rhymes with pure, means «flower» in French. It’s a less common alternative to Flora, which ranks in the top 1,000 baby names in the U.S. If you’re looking for a nature name that you won’t hear anywhere else, consider Fleur.
Golden
Golden symbolizes honesty and authenticity. Give your baby an extra glow with this dazzling color name. Award-winning actress Golden Brooks has brought attention to the name, as has the song «Golden» by Harry Styles. Variations include Gold, Goldie, and Golda.
Holland
Holland has steadily climbed the charts since the ’90s, entering the top 1,000 baby names in the U. S. in 2014, though it’s still rare relative to other European place names like London and Paris. Holland, meaning «wooded land» in Dutch, is a region within the Netherlands – though Holland is sometimes used to refer to the whole country.
Lake
Surprisingly rare, Lake follows the flow of water names such as Bay, Ocean, River, and Brook. It comes from the Latin word lacus, meaning, somewhat plainly, «inland body of water.» But this placid, nature-inspired name conjures serenity, wildness, and life simplified.
Lavender
Lavender, with its fragrant purple flowers, is an unexpected twist on floral names like Rose, Lily, and Iris. A few famous literary characters are named Lavender – the best friend in Roald Dahl’s Matilda and Lavender Brown, a witch in Harry Potter. Lavender is also a beautiful color and beloved scent.
Moxie
Moxie means spirited and determined, both worthy qualities to wish on your baby. The word came into American vocabularies in the 1930s when the beverage Moxie, one of the first mass-produced sodas, was marketed with the slogan «build up your nerve. » As a baby name, Moxie has old-fashioned charm.

Oceana
Oceana, meaning «ocean,» is a lyrical name of Greek origin that’s reminiscent of mermaids and myths. It’s considered to be the feminine version of Oceanus, a mythical Greek Titan who rules over the sea, all rivers, and water nymphs. With water covering 71 percent of our planet, inspiring infinite adventures and art, oceans are worth honoring with your baby’s name.
Rebel
Rebel is a gutsy, modern baby name that suits boys and girls equally. Australian comedic actress Rebel Wilson has brought new attention to the name. Robert Rodriguez, an American filmmaker who directed the Sin City and Spy Kids films, named his son Rebel. If you want your kid to have the edgiest name on the playground, Rebel is a good pick.
Zen
Are you hoping for a chill baby? Consider Zen, which is a school of Buddhism that originated in China. The word itself is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese transliteration for the Sanskrit word for meditation. Zen Buddhism emphasizes meditation, intuition, and altruism.

23 Popular Baby Girl Names To AVOID (If You Want A Unique Name)
This post may contain affiliate links. I may receive commissions for purchases made through links on this post (at no extra cost to you).
Are you trying to find a unique baby girl name? If so, you probably want to steer clear of the baby names on the “most popular baby girl name” lists from the past few years.
To make it super easy for you, I compiled all the data from the baby girls born in America over the past five years.
There is a chart below with the most popular baby girl names and their rankings over time.
You might be worried about your little girl having 5 Jennifer’s in her class at school (like I had growing up). Or, maybe you are the girl named Jennifer, and you grew tired of always being referred to as “Jennifer S.” by your 2nd grade teacher.
(Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the name Jennifer, I have several close friends with that name. )
If you are dreaming about the name to choose for your baby girl, you are probably looking at thousands of baby name lists.
I feel your pain. It can be extremely difficult to come up with a name that:
- You like,
- Your partner likes, and
- A name that isn’t too common.
If you are searching for your baby’s name, then here are a few things you may want to consider:
Top 10 Things To Consider When Choosing A Baby Girl Name:
1. How does the name sound with your last name?
For example, if your last name has a lot of syllables you may want to choose a first name with just one or two syllables.
2. Do you have a family member that you want to honor with your baby’s name?
We actually chose to use my mother’s middle name as my daughter’s middle name. My niece (on my husband’s side) has her grandmother’s name (my mother in law’s name) as her middle name.
3. Do the initials of the name spell a word or common acronym?
I had a neighbor growing up whose name was Erika Turner. The poor girl’s initials were E.T. and she was constantly being reminded of it by the boys in school.
Now, using the initials “E.T” isn’t too bad, but some children can be cruel. It is just something to keep in mind when you are picking out your favorite names.
4. Is the name so common that there will be 5 girls in her class with the same name?
If it wasn’t Jennifer, maybe it was Madison, or another name that was popular with that generation.
5. Do you want to use a nickname?
This is totally up to your personal preference. My husband and I call our daughter by her given name, but we also have a handful of nicknames that work well with her first and middle name.
6. Is the name tough to spell, or unusual to pronounce?
Again, this is completely up to your personal preference, but it can make it easier or harder on your child in elementary school. I remember my teacher stumbling over a few of the kids’ names when we were growing up.
On the other hand, this is a way to make your child’s name more unique and individual.
7. Do you and your partner both love the name?
This point is probably the most important! My husband and I each came up with a list of names that we liked. Then, we crossed out the names that the other one did not like. Finally, we narrowed it down to our favorite name from the list!
8. Are you going to announce the name to your family before or after your daughter is born?
We chose to wait until our daughter was born. There are so many opinions that we just didn’t want to hear the opinions after we made our decision.
9. Are you looking for a name different from the people in your life?
You may want to think about the names of your siblings, cousins, friends, (and their children), family friends, and co-workers.
Do you want a name that is different than some of these other people in your life?
Personally, a name that I’d loved for years was ruined because of a coworker with the same name. Let’s just say that she was less than pleasant.

The meaning of the letters of the name
Appearance
It is important for you to stand out from the crowd. However, you should not use flashy tones or catchy accessories for this. This should not be understood in the sense that bright, cheerful colors are not for you. It’s just that the general style of clothing should be distinguished by correctness, good taste, and solidity. Clothing should be of high quality and fit well on you. An appearance that meets these criteria inspires disposition and trust. These principles should be guided not only in the process of completing your wardrobe, but also when choosing the design and furnishings for your home, office.
Anastasia name compatibility, manifestation in love
Anastasia, you know how to love sincerely, deeply and reverently. With your characteristic maximalism, you give priority to your feelings. And if the partner is ready to reciprocate and at the same time meets all your requirements — both in its external appearance and internal content — love can take possession of your whole being for a long time, become the meaning of life. At the same time, your desire to dominate, coupled with the inability or unwillingness to demonstrate the depth of your feelings, can greatly complicate relationships for your partner: You are passionately in love, but cold and withdrawn; You are ready to idolize, but at the same time constantly “put in place”.

Motivation
The basis of motivation for you is the desire for an independent position. That is why you always choose the path that no one else has walked. If the direction is not mastered, it means that there are no “authorities”, and no one will be able to correct your actions, indicate how and where you need to move.
As a result, you do not recognize anyone’s right to claim that your opinion is erroneous, and your choice is insufficiently justified. Turning you off the path, making you doubt your abilities is almost impossible. On the contrary, any criticism spurs you on, provoking even more decisive steps.
It definitely speaks in your favor that you never try to «shift» responsibility for your actions onto someone else. If you want to succeed in singles, you are ready for the fact that, in case of failure, it will be you who will be blamed for it.
However, a clear mind and courage, which, as you know, “takes cities”, make such an outcome unlikely. Therefore, they believe in you and willingly follow you.
Characteristics of the name Anastasia
If you forget about this, you will be overcome by timidity, discouragement, indecision, fear of failure and complete dependence on the opinions of others.
You are very demanding in terms of cleanliness, order, quality of food and clothing. If you are too strict with yourself, you may develop a complex due to some kind of defect in appearance (real or imaginary). And this threatens discord in love and married life.
Charm, goodwill and courtesy make you a desirable partner, so there will be enough people who want to connect with you in life. However, in order to avoid conflicts and misunderstandings, the spouse of the Deuce must provide a pleasant environment, in particular, a beautiful, comfortable home. You, Deuce, are very sensitive to trifles and the lack of neatness and beauty of a marriage partner can annoy you on an unconscious level.
However, any excessive pressure on you will irritate you. Criticism can provoke a harsh, rude reaction on your part, which will surprise even those who consider you a weak-willed and indecisive person.

The meaning of the letters of the name
Appearance
The artistry of your nature suggests a certain pretentiousness in clothing. You like to decorate yourself. To do this, you use jewelry, unusual, eye-catching accessories, all kinds of stylistic delights. Well, this is quite in line with your friendly, open nature. It is only important to observe the measure, not to go to extremes, since the border between brightness and vulgarity is rather ephemeral.
Anna name compatibility, manifestation in love
Love for you is an urgent, everyday necessity, sometimes unconscious. Therefore, in your attitude towards your partner, tenderness, often quite burdensome, and caring, sometimes bordering on obsessive obsequiousness, prevail. However, you remain in unshakable confidence that you are doing everything right and require an adequate, from your point of view, reaction to your actions — gratitude and admiration. Kara, you are easily vulnerable, suspicious and touchy, often get into a state of irritation for no apparent reason. With a long absence of a partner “within reach”, you are visited by a feeling of abandonment, uncertainty that you are happy. All you really need is to find a person who will like both your touching affection and your selfless devotion. Then the union will be long and harmonious.

Motivation
You are attracted by beauty and harmony in all manifestations. Therefore, the fundamental basis of your spiritual aspirations is the desire to keep them around you. Therefore, any actions that may result in a violation of the usual order of things are contrary to your nature.
But you will not «fight» with those who are trying to create such an imbalance. A “bad peace” is always “better than a good quarrel” for you, which means that the enemy should be turned into a friend, showing tact and diplomacy.
And there is nothing surprising in the fact that you have many friends, but practically no enemies. You are always able not only to find a compromise solution, but also to “wake up the best feelings” in a person who is negative towards you.
However, simply knowing what to do in a given situation is not a choice. Opinions need to be backed up with action. And this is where your indecision often fails you. This is not timidity or fear of consequences. Just hesitation in the process of finding the best option. Life experience will help get rid of them.
Characteristics of the name Anna
Numerous adventures, as a rule, provide you with your curiosity, restless character, propensity for risk, as well as the desire to learn as much as possible about the world around you and your place in it.
If you come to terms with the idea that in society all people are somehow dependent on each other, it will be much easier for you and your environment to coexist.
