How a psychotherapist Jan Goland saves from death the thinnest girl in the world Yana Bobrova, who at 27 weighs 20 kilograms — July 12, 2023

The desire to lose some weight follows almost every girl from an early age. Unattainable standards of beauty are dictated by films, magazine covers, and sometimes the closest people. For some girls, this story ends with endless trips to the doctors. Psychotherapist Jan Goland from Nizhny Novgorod has been helping people with anorexia from all over the country for many years. He considers the experience of other patients who were able to start eating and return to normal life to be the main cure. Now among his patients is the thinnest girl in the world, who weighs only 20 kilograms at her 27 years old.
27-year-old Yana Bobrova from Belgorod, due to the usual desire to lose some weight, brought herself to a critical weight. The girl got hooked on diets in her student years. And then Yana was thin, weighed about 50 kg with a height of 161 cm. But, despite this, she began to exercise hard, reduce portions and choose only “healthy food”. Thoughts about losing weight completely captured the girl’s head after a drastic change in life. Yana got married and moved with her fiancé to another city, leaving her favorite job. In a new place, she was bored and lonely, and it was impossible to achieve understanding from her loved one.
Now Yana is 27 years old. She weighs a critical 20 kg — about the same weight as a six-year-old child. The girl is trying to lead a normal life and is engaged in ordinary household chores. Only after several hours of walking or even cooking, Yana needs to rest — an exhausted body quickly gets tired. Now our heroine spends most of her time in the hospital. From one doctor she is sent to another — and so on in a circle.
Yana Bobrov was brought to the Nizhny Novgorod psychotherapist by his former patient Maria Kokhno. Now the blogger helps girls like her who are trapped in anorexia to get out of the disease.
– I applied to all clinics in Belgorod. I stayed in several intensive care units, lay in the therapeutic department, neurological, psychiatric clinic, but everywhere I was discharged with deterioration. They shrugged and said they couldn’t help, ”Yana said with tears in her eyes on the NTV television show.
Despite her critical condition, the girl is still afraid of calories. She eats three or four meals a day and eats something light: cookies, cottage cheese, broth or baby puree. She did not immediately agree to come for treatment to Jan Goland — it took several days and a series of serious conversations. According to the psychotherapist, the girl was not sufficiently motivated for treatment and did not follow his recommendations. But in the very first days, she began to eat fractionally. At the same time, Yana and her mother left three days earlier than planned. According to Goland, he called up the patient and hopes that she will continue treatment.
Anorexia is a disease of excellent and smart students, girls with gold medals and honors, according to the well-known psychotherapist Jan Goland. Such patients strive for the ideal and do their best to become the best.

Jan Goland has been treating patients for anorexia nervosa, depression and phobias for 66 years. During his work, the doctor created his own method of treatment without putting clients on medication.
No matter how trite it may sound, but everything comes from childhood, anorexia is no exception. A tense situation in the family or a careless biting remark about appearance can start the process of self-destruction.
One of Goland’s patients with a pseudonym Asya recalls that it all started at the age of 15, when she went to visit relatives for the summer holidays. There she ate out of boredom, then in the evenings while talking with loved ones. In a few months, the girl recovered from 45 to 51 kilograms.
— When I was visiting Moscow, we weighed ourselves, and I saw that I was getting better, but somehow I didn’t care. My aunt began to say that at my age she weighed less. And when for some reason we began to measure the waist, her words somehow embarrassed me. And my cousin, who was five years older than me, weighed the same as me. Well, after her words, “Asya is a bomb,” everything inside me turned upside down, ”the girl said.
After such statements and resentment towards themselves, the girls decide to lose weight. It all starts with a reduction in portions, and then comes to the torture of strict diets. As the numbers on the scale get smaller, the incentive to keep going only grows.
One of Jan Goland’s patients was with the pseudonym Blinchikova. She received such a name due to the fact that the question “What did you eat?” always answered: «Pancake.» Moreover, in size, this pastry was a tiny pancake, which the girl stretched for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Patients with anorexia have a distorted perception of themselves. And the unrealistic beauty standards dictated by fashion and the Internet lead to complexes and loss of self-esteem. Moreover, the patients carefully hide their desire to lose weight from the rest.
— They go to different tricks: they can throw away food, hide it. I consulted in Semashko — I looked at the tables. So there, sick people threw food out of the windows right on the heads of passers-by, ”said Jan Goland. — How to understand? A person tries to eat alone, adheres to some stupid diet, emaciated, withdraws into himself.
Patients come to therapy with relatives from Nizhny Novgorod. According to Jan Goland, for recovery it is necessary to work not only with girls, but also with their relatives.
— We went to see Anya in America for her graduation party, and when she came in, we saw not our daughter, but a skeleton. She weighed 38 kilograms. We didn’t know how to react. She didn’t hear anything, didn’t want to see us. And for us it was unbearable, because we were losing a child. Any request, any remark caused wild hysteria and hatred. We realized that we were aggravating the process with parental care, and we just left. For a year and a half, they simply did not communicate. We couldn’t help, but we didn’t want to injure, ”said the mother of a girl who went to study in New York and fell ill with anorexia.
According to Jan Goland, such patients do not consider themselves sick at all.
— Until the last moment I hid that I did not eat. I was asked why you are so skinny. I was surprised, answered that I don’t know, because I eat. In general, she was such an actress, everyone believed me. She said that, probably, problems with the gastrointestinal tract, — patient Asya told the psychotherapist with a smile.
According to Jan Goland, the average death rate from anorexia is about 20%, and some end up in a psychiatric clinic due to developed schizophrenia. At the same time, the patients themselves, looking at other sick girls, believe that their story will turn out differently and they will be able to stop in time. In addition, due to anorexia, concomitant diseases begin to develop — menstruation and libido disappear, hair falls out, apathy and irritability appear, problems with the stomach and sleep arise.
— At some point, I just became a vegetable — I got weak, I could hardly walk, it seemed that I was about to fall. I didn’t even have the strength to go to the toilet — I crawled on all fours and even on this way I took a break and sat down. Sometimes, she even lost consciousness and hit her head on the corners, — recalls Asya.
The uncontrolled intake of laxatives and diuretics aggravated the situation. According to Asya, she once drank a whole pack of pills in an attempt to lose weight.
Another patient with the pseudonym Psychologist (she studied in this specialty) brought herself to disability. Several times she fainted and broke various parts of her body.
— I came home after school and fell unconscious on a hot electric stove. She received third degree burns. I even needed a skin transplant, the pain was hellish,” the patient recalls.
Anorexia patients are often treated with medication: tranquilizers are prescribed, glucose is dripped, and force-fed through a tube. Doctors see the task before them — not to let the exhausted body die. At the same time, the patients themselves complain about the deterioration of their condition due to a lack of understanding on the part of doctors and the side effects of drugs.
— I wanted to be treated, but when I came to the hospital with such a weight, the doctors began to condemn me. Doctors do not understand the essence of this disease. They know the symptoms and think the girls can handle it on their own. But you need to be pushed, supported, and not blamed and poked a finger, — said Asya.
Another patient, named Masha, heard from doctors only a dry “you should start eating”. At this phrase, the patient nodded her head and continued to starve. At the same time, parents look at each doctor with hope. Not finding help, they begin to drive patients in a circle: psychologists, healers, psychics.
Jan Goland’s methodology has several components. After the psychotherapist has talked to the patient and collected her medical history, he selects videos for her with other girls with the same symptoms. On the cassettes, patients see a “mirror patient” who talks about his way of fighting the disease.
— At the first meeting, I saw a girl with the same symptoms as me. And she looked so much like me that I seemed to communicate with her when I watched the cassette. Another peculiarity of the situation was that my mother was sitting next to me and heard all this. It seemed to me that she would never be able to understand what was happening inside me, but here everything is so accessible and clearly explained. But she didn’t believe me when I tried to tell her something, ”the patient with the pseudonym Butterfly said after recovery.
According to Jan Goland, the main purpose of these videos is to interest and motivate girls with the results of patients like them.
— They are afraid that they will become fat. But I show them that after the treatment, this patient became an international model, this one went to study abroad. And patients are reassured. Patients are told that they need to eat something, and the recovered person confirms that he also ate and everything is fine with him. And it’s not so scary anymore,” the Nizhny Novgorod psychotherapist explained.
At the same time, some patients are more affected by the stories of girls who failed to recover and were admitted to a psychiatric clinic.
Another component of therapy is auto-training. Patients listen to recordings with motivated commands and say: “I eat with pleasure”, “I am beautiful, smart, slim”, etc. This is how they reconfigure their consciousness. In group sessions, girls meet with the same patients and share their successes in the fight against the disease. Then they are given literature to read, including manuals written by Goland based on the experience of previous patients. The therapy lasts eight days for six hours each time.
The correct answer to the question «Who cured you?» Jan Goland considers only the phrase: «I myself. » He, according to him, only directs to the path of recovery.
— The most important thing is to understand that if you do not start eating now, then every day you will accelerate your way either to the grave or to schizophrenia. And if you eat, you will take steps towards life. And you need to think about how beautiful every day is, — said the patient with the pseudonym Maga.
After recovering, Maga returned to her studies, which she could not cope with due to lack of strength. She continued her modeling career. A few years later, she returned to Jan Goland with her husband and two sons to share the final result of her treatment.
Patient Blinchikova was able to close her tails in her studies and graduated from the university with honors. After that, the girl moved to work abroad, where she began to teach at a local university.
Masha, who studied acting in Hollywood, has taken off in her career. She got on the covers of film magazines, starred in a film by Emir Kusturica.
Melanie Griffith replaced her tattoo of Antonio Banderas with the names of her children
ABOUT PARTICIPATION IN DUBAI SURVIVE
— This show is primarily about people, about friendship and about the fact that even in the most extreme conditions you need to remain human.
I had absolutely no idea what was waiting for me, since this was my first experience of participating in reality. I just trusted Pasha Volya, Laysan Utyasheva and the producers of the project, whom I know personally, because I realized: if they do the project, then everything will be at the highest level. I was struck by the fact that within the framework of the show you find yourself cut off from the usual reality, you are in a kind of vacuum. And the way you used to behave in everyday life does not work here. In reality, everything seems to happen faster and more exaggerated than in everyday life.
ABOUT DIFFICULT LIFE SITUATIONS
– I think that any person has had them, but we are all human beings. Each of us has had a hard time at least once. And, as I said, answering your first question, the main thing in any situation is to remain human. Whether you have money now or not.
ABOUT LEADERSHIP
–I love to win. And of course, when I participate in any competition, there is excitement and the will to win. I think the fact that I have been dancing professionally for many years and won many awards speaks of my will to win more than just words. As for the show “Survive in Dubai”, here, first of all, there was interest and curiosity “what is it like to participate in reality?”
ABOUT MUSIC AND A CHILD’S DREAM
–Music appeared in my life from an early age, when I listened to foreign hits and came up with my own versions of lyrics on their melodies. Dreams, like every child, I had different ones, and there were a lot of them. One of them is a happy, friendly family. And right now, that dream is becoming a reality.
WHAT CHANGED WITH THE BIRTH OF A CHILD
– Everything has changed. Since the birth of Luchik, our whole life has been built based on his interests and well-being. With his appearance, I seem to re-learn the world with him. This is incredible happiness and absolute love.
ABOUT INTERNAL TRANSFORMATION
– I think many mothers will agree with me that with the advent of a child, the instinct of self-preservation seems to be aggravated. Because with the birth of a baby, you are responsible not only for yourself, but also for him. But to say that the fatal rebel and sex diva is no more, I can’t. It has not disappeared, but rather transformed into something new.
ABOUT SON
– Now he is actively beginning to socialize, communicate with other children. Recently we were at the birthday party of Olivia, the daughter of my friend Keti Topuria. It was Luka’s first public appearance, and he really liked it there. He was interested in what was happening, played, rejoiced.
EARLY CHILD DEVELOPMENT
– What they need to do.
