Most Popular Girl Names in the 70s in New York

Most popular girl names in the 70s in New York

While many women throughout history have achieved amazing things, most little girls’ names are popularized by the stars of the entertainment industry: a child actress who was a beacon of hope during the Great Depression; the title of a popular song; or the name fictional characters gave their baby in a sitcom.

Stacker compiled a list of the most popular baby names for girls in the 70s in New York using data from the Social Security Administration. Names are ranked by number of babies born.

So why were so many parents drawn to a few popular names during this groovy decade? The answers vary from name to name but make total sense when you consider the context of the era—after all, names can tell the story of a generation. Radios blaring the melodies Fleetwood Mac may have inspired parents to name their daughters after the band’s keyboardist, Christine McVie, people who came of age during the peace-and-love counterculture revolution may have been attracted to nature-inspired baby names, like Crystal, April, or Heather. Other newborns of the 1970s may have gotten their names from some of the biggest stars of the decade, like Julie Andrews or Carrie Fisher.

Keep reading to see if any familiar girls’ names (or your own!) made our list.

Alabama’s 10 most popular girl names of the 1970s

While many women throughout history have achieved amazing things, most little girls’ names are popularized by the stars of the entertainment industry: a child actress who was a beacon of hope during the Great Depression; the title of a popular song; or the name fictional characters gave their baby in a sitcom.

Stacker compiled a list of the most popular baby names for girls in the 70s in Alabama using data from the Social Security Administration.

We are in a hurry to share interesting information that we got on the website of the Civil Registry Office of the Chelyabinsk region with the readers of our website.

84 birth records for 1918 are stored in the registry office of the Chelyabinsk region. The most popular names of boys and girls of that time are associated with the era of the reign of Nicholas II. For boys, the name Nikolai was popular for girls — Alexandra. But the old Russian names were not forgotten either, for example, in the registry office of the administration of the Satka municipal district of the Chelyabinsk region, a birth record for Feofaniya is kept. Perhaps the rarest names were given to children born after. October revolution. How do you, for example, the names: Oktyabrina, Revolution.

In the mid-1920s, the revolutionary “moods” died down and quite ordinary ones replaced strange names. The boys began to be called Nikolai, Ivan, Alexander, Mikhail, Vladimir, Alexei. And among girls, Tatyana, Anna, Maria, Alexandra, Ekaterina, Olga began to appear more often. But the old Russian names, for example, John, did not go away either.

Movies and books influence the choice of names for their children. So, when Arkady Gaidar’s book «Timur and his team» was published in the 1930s, boys appeared who were called by this Turkic name, which is completely atypical for Russians. But in the Southern Urals, this name did not take root, only two South Urals in this period received the name Timur.

During the war years, the peak of popularity fell on the Russian names Ivan, Maria and Zoya. Parents began to call their children and a very unusual name — Stalin.

In the early 1970s, it suddenly became fashionable for parents to name their children in a foreign way. In the Southern Urals, these are the following names: Edward, Alfred, Alex, Eva, Renata, Isobella. In the 80s, after the release of Mexican serials on Russian television screens in the early 90s, the name Maria became very popular in the South Urals. And in general, foreign female names began to prevail over Russian ones. Karina, Margarita, Nelly appeared in large numbers. But the boys, on the contrary, began to be called easier: Andrey, Anton, Vladimir, Ivan, Igor, Mikhail, Nikolai, Pavel. Recently, interest in old Russian names has increased again. Girls are called Lyubava, Praskovya, Aksinya, Polina, Ulyana. Boys — Daniil, Prokhor, Zakhar, Stepan.

According to the official statistics of the registry office of the Southern Urals, the winners of the last century are the following names: for boys: Alexander, the second place is taken by the name Sergey, the name Vladimir is the bronze medalist of the last century; the girls in the leaders of the last century have the name Tatyana, the “silver” medalist is Elena, and the name Natalya closes the top three.

In Russia over the past hundred years, the most popular name for newborn boys is the name Alexander, and for girls — Sophia (or Sophia). It is curious that according to the registry office, the name Alexander has consistently held the first position for more than 20 years, constantly ahead of the names Maxim and Artem, which have become popular in recent years, although a few years ago the names Daniil and Nikita were in the «winners», and a little earlier — Dmitry and Alexei.
