Toys for a 3 year old girl: The 31 Best Gifts for 3-Year-Olds in 2023
Posted onThe 50 best gifts and toys for 3-year-olds in 2023
The best gifts for 3-year-olds provide plenty of opportunities to explore as toddlers grow and develop into more imaginative play.
Finally out of the «terrible twos,» many are entering school for the first time and interacting with friends. They’re becoming increasingly verbal and able to answer questions and follow directions. (Or not: There’s a reason people call them “threenagers.”)
What should I look for in a gift for 3-year-olds?
“Three-year-olds are getting to be more social and have ideas of their own,” said Tovah Klein, director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development and author of “How Toddlers Thrive.” According to Klein, “Open-ended toys such as blocks and building toys allow them to explore, discover and carry out their ideas.»
They are deep in the “I’ll do it myself” phase, so they enjoy things that help them master the fine motor skills that might help them dress themselves, said Marie Conti, head of The Wetherill School in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, and a board member of the American Montessori Society.
From unique gifts for 3-year-olds to educational toys, we found tons of options for your little one. To quickly jump to the category you’re looking for, click on the links below or keep scrolling to see all 50.

Melissa & Doug Let’s Explore Light & Sound Camping Lantern Play Set
This toy was designed to inspire hours of screen-free fun. They can change the color of the light in the lantern. Plus, it plays soothing noises like bird chirps, campfire sounds, ocean waves and more to help them feel like they’re on a real adventure.
Kinetic Sand Sandcastle Set
“The sandbox is one of the most popular activities on our playground, for all ages,” Conti said. This magic sand is a perfect indoor version. It’s sensory play at its best.
Melissa & Doug Pattern Blocks and Boards
The options are endless when it comes to the patterns and designs your child could make with these vibrant geometric blocks, but they can also build the patterns that are already included with the set. Their problem-solving skills and natural curiosity will also be tested by shapes like hexagons, trapezoids, rhombuses and more.

Your tyke can choose to cuddle or, using the included LED pen, draw all manner of fantastical shapes right on the bear. This activates the fur’s glow effect, which, in the dark, illuminates your child’s drawings. (Not to worry: They fade away after two minutes, the brand says.)
Mini Squishable Comfort Avocado
Is the avocado your tyke’s latest obsession? Take a gander at this one, which will never brown. This avocado is part of Squishable’s “comfort food” line, an unusual addition to the usual stuffed animal menagerie. It’s also the smaller version of the full-size Comfort Food Avocado Squishable, which means that, at 7 inches, it’s the perfect size for 3-year-olds to cuddle and play with. «This is an A+++ squish,» said one reviewer.

Best books for 3-year-olds
“The Sun Is Late and So Is the Farmer,” by Philip C. Stead and Erin E. Stead
As farm animals wait for the sun to rise, it seems to take a little too long. So they set off on a journey to the edge of the world to summon the sunrise. If your little one loves animals great and small, they’ll love this tale, which, according to Publisher’s Weekly, «appreciates creatures’ gentle ways and offers a quiet reminder about perceptions’ ability to mislead.»
“The Pigeon Will Ride the Roller Coaster,” by Mo Willems
The pigeon first tried to ride the bus nearly 20 years ago. Now he’s ready for a roller coaster and can barely stand the excitement.
“Go Back to Sleep,” by Zoe Foster Blake and Mike Jacobsen
Finn’s parents just won’t stay in bed at night, so he’ll have to enforce their bedtime routine in this funny role reversal.
“Counting to Bananas,” by Carrie Tillotson and Estrela Lourenço
Banana is waiting for his turn in this (mostly) rhyming fruit-counting book that keeps counting animals instead. This fun counting book will make little ones giggle.
“Sylvie,” by Jean Reidy and Lucy Ruth Cummins
Sylvie the spider watches over the tenants where she lives beneath a fire escape. Not since “Charlotte’s Web” has a spider been such a kind friend.
“Brown Is Warm, Black Is Bright,” by Sarah L. Thomson and Keith Mallett
Brown is the color of leaves and black a dark puddle in this lyrical exploration of positive associations of black and brown.

Toys for children from 2 to 3 years old
After two years, the game naturally becomes more difficult, because the child seeks not just to jingle objects, but to get a very specific result of his game, and with it the approval of adults. During this period, children, mastering goal-setting, become very independent, and the task of parents, as before, is to provide the kids with an environment for proper development.

Children’s play corner
In the period from 2 to 3 years, the child develops the so-called «childish pedantry», outwardly manifested in the desire to put everything in its place, to act according to the regime and established rules.
In order to support the child in his desire to do everything neatly and clearly, you need to arrange for him his own place — a corner in the room or, if possible, his own separate room. In this children’s territory, everything should be orderly, there should be a place for everything. To systematize the «children’s household» will help:
- rack with various shelves and drawers;
- boxes, containers, baskets;
- children’s fabric frame house or playpen;
- children’s furniture (table, chair) for drawing, modeling and other creative activities;
Ideally, the child’s room should be clearly zoned and have a separate space for each type of activity and play:
The earliest known dollhouses were made in Europe in the 16th century and were not child’s play at all. These were several times reduced copies of an ideal home with all the attributes of a rich life — miniature paintings on the walls, carved furniture and silk curtains on the windows.
![]()
- children’s «kitchen», where there is a stove, dishes, plastic fruits and vegetables, etc.;
- area for creative activities, including a table, a chair, a rack with paints and plasticine;
- free space for ball games and other outdoor games, etc.
Each play area can, among other things, be separated by a rug of your own color or a movable screen — all this will make the baby very happy, and thanks to this he will even more strive to keep his room in order.
The beginning of a child’s game
During this period, the child learns the process of play — certain actions that will subsequently develop into a real plot, a story, the heroes of which will be himself and his favorite toys. The task of an adult at this stage is to show the baby how to play, and for this you need to purchase (if this has not already been done before) several realistic toys:
- dolls made of different materials and different types, for example, dressed in rag and plastic with a set of clothes that can be put on and taken off;
- doll utensils, furniture, hygiene and personal care items, as well as food — everything must correspond to the size of the doll for ease of play;
- toy animals, as close as possible to real ones;
All these toys should be very simple and without additional functions, such as singing songs, crying, because this hinders the development of the baby’s imagination, does not allow him to decide what the toy will do. Also, for most dolls and animals, legs and arms should bend and unbend, it should be easy to seat them on a chair and put them in a crib. The face or muzzle of the toy, all the details (eyes, nose, etc.) should be clear and recognizable, not confusing the baby with their pretentiousness.
Dolls in their modern concept were made in Ancient Egypt 4.5 thousand years ago, and even then they had hair, legs and arms that could be bent and unbent, several sets of clothes and their own miniature furniture.
- various items that do not have a specific meaning and purpose, but which may be needed during the game. These items can be pyramid rings, cubes, balls, etc. — in general, everything that remains from toys bought for a child at an earlier age.
There should not be a lot of toys, but with the help of them the child must learn the basic actions of an adult: combing, washing, going to bed (laying the doll), cooking porridge, eating (feeding the baby doll), etc. First, the baby will perform all these «rituals» without any logic, but over time, the skills acquired during this period will help him play for a long time and with interest.
The first stories for the game
- It’s time to eat: cook soup or porridge, arrange dishes on the table before dinner, put the dolls on high chairs, feed the dolls from a spoon, pour juice into cups, give the dolls a drink. It is not necessary that all items should be at hand for the baby (spoons can be ice cream sticks, and compote can be poured pretend from the kettle), the correct action according to the situation is important.
- It’s time to sleep: put the doll in the crib, cover with a blanket, straighten the pillow, sing a song, pat on the head or back.
- Morning procedures: bathe the doll, wash it, brush its teeth, comb it, etc.
- Out for a walk: drive a car, play ball, etc.
- We meet guests, celebrate a birthday or New Year (the last holiday that the baby remembers): we set the table with a festive tablecloth, put beautiful dishes, put fruits and vegetables in a vase, meet guests, seat them at the table, treat them.
When giving a story to a child, especially not for the first time, there is no need to control and correct his every action. Fantasizing and improvising, he will gradually mature for his own completely independent plot game

Therefore, cars must be either with a seat at the top, or with an open body. The task of an adult is to suggest a plot to a child, for example, toys are going to visit, for a birthday, etc.
Large building blocks and brick sets
Your child does not yet need more complex or smaller building blocks than those that were already bought between the age of two and a half. But now it is important to show the baby how the details of the designer can interact with the space around. For example, by putting the rings from the pyramid to a chair, one can imagine that this is a typewriter, and by placing a few more chairs at the back, that this is a train car. Also, from the constructor, you can build, say, a computer and “work” on it, as dad does. You can also build houses and furniture for dolls from cubes, transforming and improving your children’s world.
Parents should not have the task of buying absolutely all the tools for their child to play, they should explain and show the baby how to make the device he needs today from the toys he already has.
In St. Petersburg, the Toy Museum was opened in 1997 and became the second such institution in Russia after the museum in Sergiev Posad near Moscow. Despite the fact that the St. Petersburg museum is quite young, its collection already includes more than 10 thousand exhibits and is constantly updated with new copies of Russian and foreign-made toys 19-20 centuries.
Various balls
Balls, contrary to the idea of adults about them, provide an opportunity not only to develop physically, for the baby they serve as an indispensable simulator for the development of speech and communication. When teaching a child to throw and catch a ball, you can also teach him to answer a question and quickly ask an adult a question himself.
A child should have several completely different balls at his disposal:
- a large inflatable ball as tall as him;
- soccer ball or similar;
- lightweight soccer ball;
- Arabic ball;
- ping-pong ball;
- small rubber ball, etc.
Dynamic toys
A dynamic toy is a toy that the child is able to put into action and understand why it performs a particular movement. That is, a battery-powered toy that, after pressing a button, starts to sing, bark or walk, is not dynamic and in no way develops the imagination and thinking of the baby.
Parents should purchase the following dynamic toys:
- wheelchairs — those that, after the start of movement, perform some actions, for example, a drummer bear;
- rotating — after pressing, they begin to ride, for example, a spinning top and a spinning top;
- rocking, such as roly-poly doll, rocking horse, etc.
The first picture books
From the first months of life, a child likes to look at everything and study with his eyes, so books with bright pictures are simply necessary for him at this stage of development too.
Basic recommendations for pictures for a 2-3 year old baby:
- pictures should be of good quality, clear, with well-drawn details;
- they must show easily recognizable animals and other characters;
- pictures should be not only plot, but also with the image of objects;
- sets of pictures, where the same bear or bunny is in different situations, space and time will serve as a good tool for the development of the child.
A child can not just look at books and cards, adults need to come up with various games and tasks using the child’s favorite images. For example, you can cut several cards in half and ask the child to connect the parts together, or ask them to connect the objects in the pictures with their owners on another group of cards.
How to choose a safe toy for your child (video)
Thus, from two to three years old, it turns out that the child does not need to buy a lot of new things, especially compared to the second year of life. Now it is important to create conditions for a good organization and systematization of the arsenal of toys that he already has, and also to show him the first plots for the game, how toys can interact with the space around, modifying it depending on the desires and needs of the child for a specific today’s game situation.

At the age of one and a half, the child has his first lotto. You should not lay out the entire set in front of the baby at once: start with one simple card — and one by one, put all the corresponding elements in place yourself. Then invite the child to do this: gradually, one subject at a time. So go on — element by element, card by card. Recommended:

20.
Ortho mats
What are the irreplaceable benefits of ortho mats? Experts talk about increasing blood circulation in the foot, strengthening muscles and stimulating sensory. It is desirable that such a rug appears in a child at a very early age, when he is just starting to move with support. Do not believe it, but then the rug will remain with him until adolescence! Just lay them on the floor under the workplace — and a regular foot massage is provided. Recommended:

21. Ring toss
An active and fun game for developing gross motor skills. The whole family can play! Just don’t start teaching a one-year-old child to throw rings from 6 meters 🙂 For the very first time, the baby stands directly above the toy and tries to throw the ring on the pin from top to bottom. Only over time we complicate the game and gradually increase the distance. Do not forget that it is very important for a child to succeed and win, so in no case should you force the situation.

- Plastmaster

23. Basketball hoop (growing)
The basketball stand can be placed in the child’s room when the child has begun to walk confidently and freely. To begin with, set the ring at the level of the child’s chest and teach him to throw a ball into it — preferably a soft one, take pity on the neighbors below 🙂 Over time, the game “grows” with the child: the ring will rise, and the distance to it when thrown will increase. The most useful tool for developing coordination of movements, large motor skills — and a great mood! Recommended:

Minigolf, croquet
A game that all kids like! Unbeknownst to themselves, even babies learn to concentrate and control their body — and at the same time receive a lot of positive emotions. Which of us has not dreamed of a railroad in childhood? A terrific toy today is available and safe even for babies of one and a half to two years. It will be enough for you to show your child how to play with the railroad just a few times — and believe me, in the end he will spend more than one hour playing (moreover, playing independently)! If not in one and a half, then in two or two and a half years — but at a certain moment the railway will “go” to the child for sure. Checked! Recommended:
- Ikea
- Xiaomi
Brio
29. Dishes or kitchen (for boys too!)
One of the main desires of a child is to be like his parents.
