Afisha City: Missing Letter — Archive

Yuri Gordon — type designer, author of over 20 original fonts, founder of Letterhead studio — wrote a book about letters. It explains how the letters of the Russian alphabet live, what laws they obey and what the future holds for them; from the book it also becomes clear that the letters have paws and a tail. Yu.S.: The first thing I understood from the book is that there are serious problems with the Cyrillic alphabet. There is hope that they can be resolved in the distant future, but in general everything is very bad.

— The problem is that initially the design of our alphabet was imperfect and not thought out from a plastic point of view. It is difficult to say why, in the course of the formation of the Latin alphabet, those forms were selected that were not only convenient for writing, but also the most beautiful plastically. That is why they have established L and not established G — the gallows, which falls all the time. Latin is a product of pure evolution; there was no emperor who introduced it, there was no saint who invented it. And I consider the Cyrillic alphabet just an intellectual experiment. Two wonderful erudite took and came up with the alphabet. For everything that was missing in the Latin alphabet — what we have begins with the letter H and beyond — signs were invented that were connected in form with Semitic, Greek or some other signs. Some of them, thank God, died — like yuss, who did not climb into any gate, they were completely splayed out. And part — Sh, Shch, Y — remained, and this is actually a cropped, unfinished, spoiled Latin alphabet. Why is our alphabet so straight? Because at the moment when it was introduced, in the 9th century, everyone wrote in the Greek charter — and it is direct. But the Greeks themselves went to the round letter. The Greek alphabet is lowercase, it is interesting and round, it has overcome this stickiness. And as the fence went, so it went. Lowercase letters have remained fences, facing us, instead of running along the line, as lowercase usually do. If not for Peter, we would have suffered so much. I really like the hypothesis that he designed the font himself — it was painfully resolute Peter the Great civil font, painfully talented. Even the absurdities in it are extraordinary.

And then there were two movements: on the one hand, from the time of Peter the Great until the “World of Art”, secondary artisans were engaged in the Cyrillic script. And the second — at every opportunity, the Cyrillic alphabet was broken bones. They introduced new letters, abandoned some of the old ones, introduced lower case letters under the Petrine reform — this was a revolution in the minds. And what did the Bolsheviks do? I am absolutely sure that by the 1930s, if it were not for these idiots, the country would have come to the typographic heyday. The point is this. In 1905, when censorship was relaxed, printing houses immediately began to open. And the printers needed a font. But as soon as the Bolsheviks arrived, they cut off the free printing houses. And they melted down the fonts, for which you have to hit on the head separately. And instead of flourishing, we had a terrible decline. Moreover, it was just at the moment when real type designers appeared, people who began to make Russian letters based on their own tradition — Narbut, Chekhonin, the same Favorsky. They could make typefaces, and type culture begins with the fact that everything becomes interesting in typesetting and the reader gets used to reading new letters. Now we would be like Holland in the field of type art — there would be such a powerful artistic explosion, and a group of graphic designers would follow Chagall, Kandinsky, Lissitzky. We just didn’t make it.

DL: All changes in the Cyrillic tradition are somehow imposed from above. Maybe it makes sense to carry out a new reform, to attract people who understand this? It is known that the Russian text is harder to read: Russian eyes get tired earlier than Europeans who read the Latin alphabet.

Yu. S.: Hence alcoholism.

— I can tell you why: Russian letters are smaller in the same size. In Latin lowercase letters, the middle shelf is predominantly omitted. Imagine the letter «v» in Russian — the Latin letters do not have this shelf. Only in the letters «e» and «a». And «x» is another intersection, but it does not give such blackness. All their movements occur from above and below. Due to this, the Latin lowercase part of the alphabet seems larger. And Russian people have to read smaller holes, and the eye gets tired more. As for the reform from above — by no means! The state should get away from this matter so far that it is not visible at all. As soon as the state crawled aside at the beginning of the 20th century, everything connected with letters began to grow insanely fast. To some extent, the Bolshevik reform was overdue: a solid sign, this reduced last sound, it had to disappear. But this does not mean that it was necessary to melt down all hard signs — along with fonts that were objectionable to the authorities.

DL: Which way is everything moving now? What will happen to Cyrillic in a few years?

I don’t know. Because, first of all, Latin fashion is natural, orientation to the Latin alphabet, first of all, in the minds of designers. On the other hand, now the defining letters in our fonts — K, L, D, Z, lowercase «f» — change a little before our eyes, and this affects the taste of the font. I think that the changes in the font (if there is no dubye again) will be soft, calm, but in 10-15-20 years they will give a serious result. We will look back and think: fir-trees-sticks, how come? We remember our font as looking like bad Latin, but now it has become rough, catchy — but it has become different, it has become much more independent. And this will be expressed primarily in the fact that we will be interested in the West. We are almost ready for this.

Yu.S.: In addition to type designers, there were a huge number of people who simply wrote by hand. And now we find ourselves in a situation where these people are no more: the next generation will already have a poor understanding of how to even use a ballpoint pen. Isn’t it a problem that type design is detached from folk life?

— We are 10-15 years behind the West, they have already done all this. Letters have become less dependent on how they are written. Therefore, the form became freer. Claims to some formal things that can only be done by hand have become less. This means that the field of readability of the grapheme has become wider. Whether this is good or bad, I don’t know. But it’s definitely interesting. If you are not too afraid, this will simply lead to the development of the human brain, some extra cells will open in it. The zone of perception will become wider: this is also the letter A, and this too, and it can be like that — so I have to think a little wider.

Yu.S.: I remember school copybooks and understand that Soviet school calligraphy always demanded some kind of roundness. In lowercase letters, it was constantly necessary to draw some circles and loops.

— Our school calligraphy is, of course, madness. It was absolutely terrible in the 60s when I was studying. Those prescriptions that appeared under a ballpoint pen are also not a masterpiece, but at least at least in the basis it was written by hand. And in the 60s, it was based on the Edwardian English script, which passed through people with templates and drawers. There were sometimes very strange designs that were really difficult to write. It was such a tortured, lifeless affair! I don’t know how many people have been driven to just…

YS: Alcoholism?

— … because a person must submit, feel that it is beyond his understanding, and despair for life. Indeed, it generates neuroses.

DL: I keep returning to the future of Cyrillic. Will the middle line disappear?

— Will not disappear. We are all waiting for the thunder to break out, God to jump out of the car and fix everything for us. Nevermind! No one is needed! We must be left alone, so that we can at least 30 years normally, calmly pee without state control with the script we write, and build 5, 100, 1000 Cyrillic fonts — new, in more or less traditional graphics. We need to become a little bit Dutch, to lag behind our type, unfortunate, long-suffering, to finally give him the opportunity to live on his own and behave like gardeners, and not like lumberjacks. This is the only normal way.

DL: What happens on the periphery of the typeface? In everyday fonts?

— Folk graphics are 50 years behind the typographic ones. I walk past the trays and look at what is written by hand. It is written the way it would have been written in the 40s, after the war, very similar. It seems to all of us who make letters that we are cut off from folk type graphics. Nevermind. We are connected with her, but these are tricky connections. We are trying to avoid something, we are trying to implement something. And it depends on what the reader will perceive.

DL: Is there anything interesting happening in graffiti typography?

— I know that it is sharply divided into two parts. One part is one hundred percent imitative of the West, when people simply copy long-found forms. Cyrillic in this case is even stranger than it is in general. And the other is, as they say, writing on the fences. After all, it is customary for us to write ugly on fences. Unlike the same Dutch. We do not love our environment, we push ourselves away from it. And we also want to spoil our environment rather than improve it. And very few people who try to write something beautiful use purely folk graphics. This is when they write on the ground, on the pavement: “I love you!” The painter girl tried to declare her love to Vasya the roofer, who is sitting on the roof. It is never written the way graffiti writes, it is always written in purely folk graphics. And then the Soviet school immediately comes out. There is such a popular character there, there are so many obvious slavery in this matter and secret ways to get around this slavery! Our font, in general, is very slavish in feel. Shackled, downtrodden, driven inside himself, not luxurious, not relaxed, not artistic, but, on the contrary, squeezed. Or he goes into cursive writing, which is like Cossack lava: we will chop everyone with checkers. Look at the letter “g” or cursive “d”: a few strokes that simply have to dismember the enemy into 10 pieces. This is drunkenness in its purest form.

Yu.S.: Some designers sometimes say that they simply have a zoological hatred for certain letters. Do you have things that are unsettling?

— Yes, I hate the letter P. I can’t stand lowercase letters at all. I hate this «one stick, two string» thing. This letter makes us stupid slaves, it simply drives stupid slavish obedience to circumstances into our brains. The letter «p» is lowercase — it should not be like that, it should not stand like an old dog. In general, lowercase letters should look to the side, not like that, into the eyes. Those are the animals. The letters are little animals, they are funny, I push this in the book all the time. The lowercase letters originated from the manuscript, which means they are alive. Capital letters — from the Roman capital font — means architectural. And they are allowed to face us. And in our country, unfortunately, you can count a dozen and a half of those who stand and stupidly resist, instead of going where they need to go.

DL: And how well are things that are built only on fonts and that we encounter on a daily basis: road signs, street signs?

— I would kill everyone who made signs in Moscow. I don’t think it’s better in other cities either. What has been done in the Moscow metro cannot be worse at all. The fact is that all self-respecting world metros have outstanding fonts. This is such a super task that an artist can consider a life’s work. I don’t understand why signs with large print cannot be hung in the Moscow metro? I just don’t see anything there. Quiet horror.

In general, I think that the font is the 25th frame that affects the mind. Why did the literary typeface survive? Our whole generations grew up on a literary set. She was everywhere: you ride on the tram — the rules of behavior on the tram are printed in literature. You open the book at home — and there is the same thing. You write an application — and there the same thing. And this is a mediocre German font of the late 19th century, it was called “Latin” and survived only for one reason: it is very tight and resistant to damage, it can be read on the worst paper. And this thing was supposed to create inside a person some kind of feeling of resignation to fate — it will not be otherwise. You will always read literary typeface. In my opinion, the popularity of thick magazines was due in part to the fact that they were recruited by Baltika. It was a breath of freedom at the level of reading the sign.

DL: Do you think type designers will have enough work for a long time?

— Cyrillic — for a long time. Latin already, poor thing, fight, suffer. They have done 40-50 thousand fonts, they only have a bent line — and to them: this has already been done 10 times! And we have complete freedom. And the letters are not settled, and there are no strict rules. But my deep inner conviction is that the font is not only a means of conveying meaning, but also a very good means of conveying emotions. This has not been done much: it is believed that the text font should be neutral. I absolutely don’t think so. He can be very emotional. And if so, then the variety can be very large — without reducing readability. Our recognition capabilities are still very large inside. This font will be a little sad, but this one is a little more fun. And a person’s mood will rise simply due to how the text looks.
