Car window covers for babies: Sun Shade Car Baby : Target
Posted onThe Best Baby Car Sunshades of 2023 (based on our tests)
We researched and purchased fourteen of the most popular baby car sunshades on the market. We used extensive testing procedures to determine which car shade is the best based on sunlight protection, stability, quality, design, and ease of use.

Our Editor’s Choice award and top pick for the best baby car sunshade go to the TFY Universal Sunshade. It performed best in our myriad of tests.
This shade slips easily over the top of a car door, covering the entire rear window on both the outside and inside. It can be ordered in regular or large sizing for a rectangular window, and regular sizing for a contoured window. Our testing used the large rectangular shade measuring at 31.5” x 47” x 23”. The stretchy material makes it more universally usable than many other styles. This shade was able to cover the rear window for both a GMC Acadia and Chevy Cruze.
TFY Universal Sunshade
Though we tested four different pullover style shades, this one scored the best overall in sun protection, ease of use, and aesthetic appeal. Unlike the other shades, the TFY had darker, thicker mesh on one side of the shade and lighter, thinner mesh on the other. This addition of the darker side offered protection from the sun that others did not.
Because the shade stretches over the entire top of the car door and window frame, it cannot be removed by a passenger. A child in a car seat can grab onto it and pull on the bottom, but they cannot remove it.
The TFY can handle even the toughest attempts at removing
The TFY was very easy to install as it slips over the top of the door. We were able to install one in only twelve seconds.
This shade does partially go on the outside of the vehicle, so it is subject to outdoor factors like rain or debris. However, when we tested this shade, we ran it under water to see how fast it would dry and it fully air dried very quickly.
A car shade of this style still lets the car window roll down, allowing fresh air to flow. Even with the window rolled down, we never noticed any unwanted wind noise or shade flapping.
The TFY Sunshade is very budget friendly, falling well within the average price range for a two pack.
Pros
- Quick installation
- Good protection from UV rays
- Child cannot remove
- Ability to roll down window
- Double layer of protection
- Looks good on vehicle
- Budget friendly
Cons
- Can get wet or dirty on the outside
- Some view distortion

The Qualizi Sun Shade is another quality shade that performed well in our testing.
Another pullover style car shade, it is similar to the TFY with a few key differences. For example, the Qualizi shade can be ordered in a plethora of sizes, ranging from Small to XXXL.
Another difference between this shade and the TFY is that the Qualizi is a thinner material. As a result, it does have a slightly lower level of sunlight protection.
The Qualizi can also be easily installed by slipping over the car door. During testing, it only took us twelve seconds to set up. When we got it wet during testing, it air dried quickly and easily.
We tested four different pullover style shades that look nearly identical. The main differences between them were how well they fit over the testing vehicle windows and the level of sunlight protection, with the TFY scoring two points higher than the other three shades.
Before testing, we speculated that these shades would score lower overall, thinking the fact that they are partially outside the vehicle would cut down on aesthetic appeal and quality, but we were pleasantly surprised by the test results.
The four pullover sunshades look nearly identical
One of the biggest benefits of these shades is that their over the door style means the entire window is covered at all times. Shades that adhere to the windows often are not a perfect fit and leave gaps that allow sunlight in.
Another benefit is the ability to roll down the car window while the shade is installed. This allows for airflow while still blocking out unwanted brightness.
Shades of this style may not be for everyone. If you do not want something that is on the outside of the vehicle and at risk of getting wet or dirty, you may want to consider a different type of sunshade. However, we were impressed that the four pullover shades we tested were our top scorers.

If you are looking for a different style of shade that does not go on the outside of your car, we recommend the kinder Fluff Car Window Shade.
This shade uses static cling to adhere to the window, making it easy to install. We got one put up in less than seventeen seconds.
This product comes as a four pack with two semi-transparent and two transparent shades. The darker semi-transparent shade offers better sunlight protection than the transparent, but does cause more distortion for drivers looking out the window.
The shades can be ordered in either 21″x12″ or 25″x16″. We tested the 21″x12″ for our testing, which was a bit small on a GMC Acadia window, letting some sun in around the edges, but it did fit better on the smaller Chevy Cruze window.
Though the shades were twisted for storage, they laid flat against the window much better than some similar shades we tested. There was very little bunching at the top and bottom.
The darker kinder Fluff shade
The shade stuck very well to the window and did not fall off at all when driving the car and hitting bumps, but it was still easy to remove and reapply.
The lighter kinder Fluff shade
When removing the shade, we did notice that it left some residue on the window, but this did not seem to impact reapplication, and the residue wiped off easily.
Pros
- Easy installation
- Can order different sizes
- Four pack with two different darkness levels
- Can be removed and reapplied easily
- Good price
Cons
- Can leave gapping around the sides
- Leaves some residue on removal

In addition to the four pullover shades and six static cling shades, we tested three magnetic shades and one relying on suction cup and hook attachments to secure.
The ggomaArt Universal Magnetic Shade scored the highest of these shades, with nearly 100% sunlight blockage.
This shade came with magnetic fasteners as well as suction cups for reinforcement.
Do note that this style of shade is only practical for metal framed windows and doors. The sale listing itself advises to double check your doors before purchasing. We were able to hang the shade on both a GMC Acadia and a Chevy Cruze.
The shade does hang freely at the bottom, so it is easy for a child to grab onto and try to remove, but compared to the other magnetic shades, the ZATOOTO Magnetic Blinds and the Munchkin® Brica® Magnetic Stretch to Fit™, the ggomaArt offers the overall best sun and UV protection, tear resistance, and aesthetic appeal.
The downside to this shade is that, because of the material, the window is completely blacked out, creating a blindspot for the driver.
The shade did not come with installation instructions, so it took a little longer to figure out how to set it up on the window, but it still only took us a minute to install the shade with the magnets and suction cups.
The ggomaArt comes with a single shade, so if you are wanting to cover both backseat windows, you will need to order two.
This is a great shade to allow a child to nap in the backseat on a road trip, blocking all sun rays from the rear window except for the small gaps on the side.
Pros
- Best sun ray protection
- Very little gapping
- Two fastener types
Cons
- Creates blindspot
- Only works on certain door frames
- Only comes with one shade
Value
Sunshades in general are not an expensive product. The prices of our tested products varied from $8.99 to $20.99. Most sunshades can be purchased at an average price of around $15. An affordable but useful product such as this would make a great gift for a baby shower.
Many shades came in two to four packs, with only the ggomaArt and Munchkin® Brica® Magnetic Stretch to Fit™ shades coming with a singular shade.

Why You Can Trust Us
Our team of professionals has researched hundreds of children’s products over the past seven years. We have used many of these products ourselves as parents and grandparents.
Our team completed extensive research to determine the most popular baby car sunshades on the market. After choosing our products, we read several buyer’s guides to find out exactly what people are looking for in a sunshade, wanting to make sure our choices could fill that need.
We read hundreds of critical customer reviews of baby car sunshades and based our extensive testing criteria on these findings.
We purchased all the products in this review at retail prices and did not receive any incentive or compensation from manufacturers. All recommendations and opinions are strictly our own.
Our Video
How We Tested
Our extensive research showed that buyers’ most common complaints about sunshades are that they fall off easily, they don’t provide adequate sun and UV ray protection, and that they don’t fit their car windows well.
Other frequent complaints were that the products were low in quality and difficult to use/reuse.
Based on this information, we aimed our testing criteria for each shade at five main areas:
Sunlight Protection (30%)
Stability (30%)
Design/Fit (20%)
Quality (10%)
Ease of Use (10%)
We installed each of the sunshades on the rear window of our vehicles for testing. We installed them on both a GMC Acadia and a Chevy Cruze to help determine how different sizes and types of vehicles may vary the test results.
We drove the vehicles, tested the shades in direct sunlight, and even used a backseat passenger (three years old) to help test the sun protection, durability, and quality of each shade.

Sunlight Protection
In this category, we measured how well each sunshade blocked the sun’s rays. For these tests, we hung each shade in direct sunlight and rated its protection. We took thickness of the material into account as well as any gaps around the sides of the shade when rating the sun glare.
Here are the overall scores in the Sunlight Protection category:

The ggomaArt Sunshade had very little gapping and provided excellent sunlight blockageThough the Munchkin Brica Magnetic Shade had even less gapping, it had much lower sunlight protection
Stability
In this category, we tested all of the shades to see how well they stayed secured to the window. We tested their ability to stay on while in a moving vehicle, as well as if a little one could remove the shade and if the window could be rolled down.
We were pleased that all of the shades, regardless of attachment method, stayed secured to the window during our driving test. Even hitting bumps and taking sharp turns, none of the shades ever fell.
Some shades passed the child test better than others. Pullover shades such as the TFY and the ShadeSox could not be removed at all since they stretch over the entire door and are secured by the closed door itself.
Our three year old shade tester
Some shades, especially the ones that adhere by static cling, were easily able to be removed during testing.
The window could be rolled down with about half of the shades, particularly the pullover style shades. None of the static cling shades stayed attached when the window was rolled down.
Design/Fit
In this category, we tested each shade to see how well it would fit on cars of different sizes. We also wanted to see if the shade interfered with the child at all, if it made any noise while moving, and how it looked aesthetically.
The majority of the shades could be hung on both a GMC Acadia and a Chevy Cruze. Some sunshades advertise that they are universal, but due to the varying window sizes, it is important to measure your window before ordering the product to make sure it will fit.
Some of the sunshades can be ordered in a variety of sizes, which is beneficial and more customized for your personal vehicle.
Most shades did not interfere with the child in the backseat or make noise while the car was moving.
When testing the aesthetic appeal of the shades, we found that the pullover shades once again topped the charts. Because they can cover an entire window, they gave a more unified look than some of the other shades.
Many of the static cling shades would bunch at the top and/or bottom because of how they were packaged, which lowered their visual score.
The pullover sunshades looked more visually appealingMany static cling shades bunched at the top and bottom, not looking as nice
Quality
In the quality portion of our testing process, we tested each shade on four factors: how it arrived from the manufacturer, how much visual distortion it caused the driver, how easily it would tear, and if it left any damage or residue on the window after removal.
All of the shades arrived in good shape. No pieces were missing or particularly damaged. For the most part, the shades did not leave any marks or residue on the windows. The only one that did was the kinder Fluff shade, but the residue wiped off easily.
When hanging anything in a car window, there is going to be some distortion of the driver’s view, resulting in less visibility. Darker and larger shades caused more distortion while lighter, smaller shades caused less.
Cute designs are more fun for a little one, but can distort the driver’s view more than a thin mesh
Because most car shades were made of mesh material and/or plastic, they were subject to some tearing. For this test, we tried to push a pencil through each shade to see how much and how easily it would rip.
Of all of the shades, the ggomaArt Magnetic Shade was the only one that could not be punctured by the pencil.
The mesh material was more forgiving than the plastic, with the mesh typically just stretching out and the plastic easily ripping.
Maybe this test was a little excessive, but the results were interesting!
Ease of Use
Nobody wants a shade that is frustrating to deal with. We wanted to make sure our sunshade choices were convenient as well as functional.
All of the shades could be installed fairly quickly. Here is the time it took to install a single shade on the back passenger window:

Not all of the shades came with installation instructions, but most are fairly self-explanatory and easy to install. Something we learned that not all instructions shared was that, particularly for the static cling shades, the window will need to be cleaned before installing to guarantee a better stick.
We were able to easily remove and store all of the sunshades back into their original packaging.
The shades came in a variety of packaging styles
Some shades were easier to re-store than others. You might consider storing the static cling shades flat instead of retwisting to fit into their pouch as the twisting can further warp the shape.
The Enovoe Four Pack shades did not lay flat after removing from the package
We were able to reinstall all of the shades, regardless of style, without any issues adhering to the window.
Are Sunshades Safe?
We are not aware of any credible research on the safety of baby car sunshades, nor are we aware of any statistics directly related to accidents involving the use of sunshades.
The purpose of a sunshade is to protect your passengers (typically children) from the brightness of the sun. This can be a matter of comfort to keep the sun glare out of their eyes and keep the car cool, and also a matter of protecting baby’s delicate skin from harmful UV rays and potential sunburn. Sunshades exist to bring comfort and safety.
It should be noted, however, that placing anything in the window of your car can create a blind spot and distortion while driving. Though some sunshades give more distortion than others, buyers should proceed with caution when picking out and using them.
Sunshades give parents ease of mind in knowing that their child is protected from the sun and comfortable in the backseat.

Why Russia stopped installing wind deflectors on car windows — Fan zone
- Fan zone
- Starohod
Photo: abcp. ru
Just 10 years ago, almost every car had deflectors: plastic lining on the glass, which allowed you to slightly open the window in the rain and even ventilate the interior during your absence. However, today it is difficult to find a car with such equipment. The AvtoVzglyad portal will tell about the reasons for the disappointment of Russians in deflectors.
Eduard Raskin
Dashing nineties with their cherry «nines» and 140th «Mercedes» have sunk into oblivion along with rich two thousandths and tenths full of hopes. It is now the third decade of the twenty-first century, and many old habits have quietly gone. This happened with the deflectors on the windows, which were bought at the noisy collapse of markets and spare parts stores rich in those years. To be honest, it was actually a mandatory option if you want respect from your neighbors and the garage cooperative.
Today, however, deflectors are not only difficult to find, but almost impossible. The probability is somewhere at the level of a unicorn in a forest near Moscow or a clean toilet at a car wash in an industrial zone. Why did the people’s love for the once respected plastic calm down so quickly and unambiguously? Everything is explained quite simply.
First of all, it is worth mentioning that the deflectors were hung primarily by those who wanted to slightly open the window during the rain, so that the glass “sweated” on its hind legs. Today, this task is confidently handled by air conditioning, which is equipped even with VAZ «state employees». The second point is noise. Cars have become aerodynamic and quiet, so every extra «device» leads to an unpleasant sound. On «Moskvich» and «Zhigula» extraneous vibrations were treated with understanding, on a brand new foreign car — with great disapproval.
Photo from open sources
The third point, oddly enough, is not connected with the deflectors themselves, but with the method of their fastening. Particularly popular options, as you probably remember, were simply glued inside the glass frame. This is where the problem lies: it was impossible to securely fasten them, and they regularly flew off into the windshields of colleagues downstream. This was such a common occurrence that deflectors were sometimes sold individually at the collapse.
However, today such a «nuance» can be expensive: the cars themselves have risen in price significantly, and every second driver has a video recorder in his car. There is no camera in the cabin — there is one on a pole, there are now more of them than on the shelves of all electronics stores combined. Simply put, flying off plastic can easily become the cause of serious proceedings not only on the road, but also in court. And if you just leave, it will come to deprivation of rights, because in fact the driver left the scene of an accident.
Cars have changed, customs and hobbies have changed, times have changed. In dense villages, you can still find a car equipped with deflectors that were fashionable 20 years ago, but in the city you cannot find such a day with fire. Their era has passed, and we, Russian drivers, have simply grown out of these children’s pants. After all, no one is surprised that the Russians stopped being led by heavy Chinese spoilers, which were regularly torn off on the go, and buying fragile “casting” from the Celestial Empire, more and more often preferring original disks or, at worst, metal “stamping”.
