Adult Child Complex: To Whom the Soviet Union Seems Like a Lost Paradise 4

Updated December 25, 2022, 15:54

November 3, 2019, 12:54

Once again about the sore point — about the Soviet paradise that does not let go.

Elena Kadyrova

People brought up in the Soviet paradigm, longing for that system of economic relations where supposedly there was no exploitation, and everyone worked for the common good, deny the fact that the system exploited them. This happens because in their inner world, at an unconscious level, the mental perception of themselves as grown children.

Growing up, but not matured. Well, judge for yourself: children cannot believe that their parents are exploiting them — when they are forced to go to school and give pocket money, and at the same time they are treated, taught and cared for “free of charge”. And what kind of income, besides pocket money, do children have? Besides those crumbs given out for good behavior and labor service? “The main thing is that no one profited from each other, people were brothers,” they nostalgic for the Soviet paradise, and indeed, the “children” were more or less equal in terms of a modest level of prosperity and equally dependent.

The psychology of a child in an adult is essentially the psychology of a slave. Moreover, the word slave is used here not in an offensive sense, but as a designation of an individual who has refused the burden of freedom and responsibility. What is harmonious at one stage of personal and social evolution turns into pathology at another. For someone who wants to stay in kindergarten for life, there are no advantages in the capitalist relations of Western democracies — on the contrary, they threaten the existential cold of loneliness and insecurity in the economic jungle, while offering nothing in return. Nothing but freedom . But small children are afraid of freedom, they don’t need it, they just need to be able to play and mess around inside simple and clear behavioral frameworks and meanings, lowered from above under the supervision of wise rulers who will take care, guide and distribute.

That is why the Soviet economic model just implies the sacralization of power and the infantilization of the population as a basic socio-psychological construct. It is this construct that is the very roots from which only various modifications of authoritarian and totalitarian systems can sprout.

Here is our current system — in the historical perspective, an unviable chimera, born from an attempt to plant a Western economic and socio-political model on our roots. This system, although rejected by others, gradually takes on familiar, albeit twisted, traditional forms. The only difference is that the authorities, having tasted the delights of personal super-incomes in conditions of complete impunity, are now shamelessly saving on their children, that is, in fact, disenfranchised slaves. At the same time, while maintaining the old paternal rhetoric and inflamed more and more, frightening the horrors of orphanhood or the danger to the Motherland from external enemies and inflating with a sense of belonging to the greatness of the state organism.

In the imperial model, the literal size of the state body is sacralized against the background of the depreciation of the small life of a particular person. This matrix is considered in detail by me in the article «Country of Matryoshkas».

However, I would like to point out this: stating this, it would be a mistake to make unequivocally pessimistic forecasts for the future, based only on previous experience.
