What are children taught about determiners at primary school?

Children will probably only be introduced to determiners in Year 5 or 6. This teaching will most likely be in preparation for their Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test in Year 6.

How are determiners tested in KS2?

The Year 6 SPAG test may feature a question similar to the following:

Answer:
She put two bowls of milk down for the cats.

Answer:
I went to a / the shop to get a pint of milk. I got 25p change from the one pound coin I gave them.

Definite and indefinite articles (a, an, the) are a type of determiner; grammar questions in the KS2 grammar test may only refer to articles and not to determiners in general.

It’s also easy to get confused by words that sometimes act as determiners and sometimes as pronouns within a sentence. For example:

In the first sentence the word ‘that’ is a determiner (‘that book’). In the second it is a pronoun, as it replaces a noun. And again in the following sentences:

How are children taught about determiners in the classroom?

  • Teachers may set worksheets with sentences similar to those above, asking children to pick out the determiners.
  • They may set children a task to look through their reading books and pick out all the determiners.
  • The class may participate in a discussion about which words are determiners; for example, a child may be given the phrase ‘happy girl’ and suggest that the word ‘happy’ is a determiner.  Class discussion could then lead to the teacher explaining that ‘happy’ is in fact an adjective.
  • The teacher may set grammar challenges, such as writing a sentence containing five determiners, then asking the children to swap their work with a learning partner to circle the determiners.
  • Teachers may give children a short passage with all the determiners missing, then ask them to fill in the gaps with appropriate determiners of their own.

If you want to make the foundation of your English language strong, then you must understand the grammatical concepts that form the building blocks of the language. A sentence is made up up several elements like nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and more. Understanding the role of each of these parts helps strengthen your grammar. An important concept that one must pay attention to in English Grammar is Determiners.

What Is A Determiner?

A determiner is a word that is placed ahead of a noun to specify some details about it. This word clarifies what the noun refers to. They could be articles, possessives, demonstratives or quantifiers. By modifying nouns and noun phrases, determiners give more meaning to the words and add context to the complete sentence.

When Should Your Child Learn About Determiners?

When talking in English or reading a story, determiners can go unnoticed by most people. Even when you come across these words, it may be hard to define their exact meaning. However, this element does more to give meaning and definition to the main idea of the sentence and helps pass on the information more clearly.

Sometimes, it may be confusing for children to identify determiners, as some of them can even act as pronouns. For instance, the word “that” can be used in the following contexts:

  • That car is very nice
  • I want that.

If you observe, both these sentences have the word ‘that’ in it, but the placement of the words in each sentence is different. In the first sentence, it is placed ahead of the noun, ‘car’. And in the second sentence, it is placed instead of a noun.

Moreover, there are other kinds of words that come ahead of nouns. These are known as adjectives. A quick way to differentiate between adjectives and determiners is to try to modify the adjective ie. try to add  -er after it.

  • That is a big car
  • ","469777815":"hybridMultilevel"}» data-aria-posinset=»1″ data-aria-level=»1″>That car is very nice.

The noun used here is ‘car’. In the first sentence, the word modifying the word car is ‘big’. Now let’s try adding ‘-er’ to it. It becomes ‘bigger’. In the second example, the word ahead of ‘car’ is ‘that’. If we try to add –er to it, it doesn’t create any sensible phrase or sentence. Hence, it is not an adjective but a determiner.

When children learn to identify this correctly, they will perfect their knowledge of determiners in English language. Thus, it is important for kids to learn determiners.

Why Are Determiners Important?

Determiners are important parts of language as they modify words and add meaning and context to the entire sentence. When kids learn about determiners, they are able to differentiate between various parts of speech. With knowledge of determiners and knowing when to use which determiner before a noun, one can improve their written and spoken English grammar.

What Are Different Type Of Determiners?

Determiners can be broadly categorised into four types: articles, demonstratives, possessives and quantifiers. Below is a detailed explanation of the kinds of determiners:

1. Articles

Articles are the words “a,” “an,” and “the.” They define whether something is specific or unspecific. There are two types of article determiners:

  • Definitive, which is used while referring to a specific thing. This article is ‘The’.
  • ","469777815":"hybridMultilevel"}» data-aria-posinset=»1″ data-aria-level=»1″>Indefinite, which is used while referring to an unspecific thing. These articles are ‘a’ and ‘an’.

Examples

  • The house across the street is where my friend lives.
  • I saw a huge animal roaming in the streets.
  • The teacher gave us an easy assignment today.

2. The Demonstrative Determiners

A demonstrative determiners defines where its noun or pronoun is in relation to the speaker.

The words ‘this’ and ‘these’ define close things (in terms of distance, psychological closeness or time). ‘That’ and ‘those’ define distant things.

Examples

  • This is one of the best books I have read.
  • These tools can be used to construct furniture.
  • I have always wanted to go to that restaurant.
  • Those constructions on the street are illegal.

3. Possessive Determiners

A possessive determiners sits before a noun (or a pronoun) to show who or what owns it. Some examples of possessives are my, your, his, her, its, our, their, and whose.

Examples

  • My house is a few blocks away from here.
  • His sweater has got a stain from some food that he dropped.
  • When is your mother coming to pick you up?
  • The children are excited because their teachers are taking them for a picnic today.

4. Quantifiers

Any quantifiers determiners that refer, even loosely, to an amount or a quantity can be classified as a quantifier. So, cardinal and ordinal numbers like one, two, three, and fourth, and fifth are quantifiers. Not all quantifiers are so specific. Many refer to an undefined amount or quantity. The most common ones are any, all, many, much, several and some.

Examples

  • I brought many chocolates for us all to share.
  • I have collected nine stamps from various countries.
  • Do you have any medicine for headaches?

Use Of Determiners

Now that you have understood what determiners essentially are, let us understand how to use them.

When using a noun in a sentence, think about what other details you want to share about that noun. Depending on whether you want to provide information about the quantity, specificity or ownership, choose the type of determiner that you need to use in the sentence.

Activities That Will Help Your Kids Learn Determiners

Learning becomes more effective through interesting activities. With these ideas, you can help your child enjoy some activities to learn determiners:

Frames — qualifiers as a means of forming ecological ideas about nature in children of senior preschool age

In the modern world, the issues of environmental education are especially significant and are among the most relevant. The formation of the principles of ecological culture begins in the period of preschool childhood, when the formation of a person’s personality takes place, therefore the task of teachers is to interest children in what is happening in wildlife, to cultivate love and respect for it, to learn how to protect the surrounding reality.

One of the effective means in the environmental education of preschoolers is the use of visual aids. At preschool age, figurative thinking prevails in children, therefore the formation of ecological ideas about nature is most successful if the teacher uses various forms of visualization in his work. Pictures and handouts, presentations, videos contribute to a better assimilation of the teacher’s story, to understand his explanations, to make reading cognitive literature the most figurative, to show the child what defines the word, if at the moment it is not available for observation.

At present, in the development of representations from living objects, the use of such visual aids as frames — determinants is gaining popularity. The process of working with frames — determinants at the present time is that the use of this visual aid facilitates the process of memorizing the material, and also contributes to the ability to highlight the main thing, systematize, analyze and synthesize the knowledge gained. Such a visual aid as a framework — determinants, performing the function of a learning tool, serves as one of the main means of developing ideas about the object under study. In preschool education, children always cannot identify plants and read the names themselves, so some teachers transformed the atlas-determinant by adding a frame, and a new equipment was obtained — a determinant frame. A frame is a graphic image of a rectangle, inside of which some text or a picture is placed. In the case of a frame-determinant, the frame is inside, like a window for determining the required item. A qualifier frame is a model that depicts objects or phenomena from the same generic group for the classification of biological objects. The topic of this frame can be varied, and chosen by the teacher, depending on the material offered to the children. These can be insects, domestic animals, birds, meadow plants, their inflorescences, clouds, precipitation. All pictures from the classified group must be signed, on the back of the frame, at the request of the educator, you can add certain information about the object. The determinant frame consists of a rectangular sheet of thick paper, on which a window is made in the middle. When observing, you need to select the desired object, direct it to the window, find the desired picture and determine its name. If there are children who read, then they can read the title on their own. Defining frames are the easiest and most fun way to engage in observation and exploration of the world around you. With the help of these models, it is possible to organize various types of oriented activities for children. The teacher can use a visual aid, both for OOD on environmental education, and in joint activities with children, or plan for independent children’s activities. This visual aid performs the following functions: it helps to recognize, consolidate and clarify children’s ideas about a natural object or phenomenon that they received in the course of its direct perception. It can also be used to form knowledge about such objects of nature that cannot be observed at the moment or in a given area (certain fruits, birds, shells, inflorescences, etc.) . Also, thanks to the defining frames, it is possible to successfully generalize and systematize generic and specific concepts in preschoolers, to establish relationships. You can use the determinant frames in any age group of the kindergarten, in any kind of children’s activity (on a walk, experimental research activity, examining objects, playing activity) .

When using frames — determinants, it is necessary to adhere to a number of requirements that will help children learn more effectively knowledge about the object:

  • taking into account age characteristics. For children of younger groups, the pictures in the identification frames should be large and their number should not exceed four; in the older group, it is possible to replace pictures with a schematic image and an increased number of pictures up to six to nine
  • objects under study (birds, insects, plants, etc.) illustrations must be shown in close-up and in natural conditions
  • defining frames should be simple for children to perceive and convenient for actions with them
  • text inscriptions for reading preschoolers should be at least 2.5-3.5 cm.

In order to use the determinant frames in the work, it is necessary to familiarize the children with this equipment: this can be both part of the lesson, and during the joint activities of the teacher and children in sensitive moments. You can offer the following options for introducing children to the frame-determinant, where the studied objects are birds:

In the afternoon, the teacher can bring in a guide frame and ask the children to come up to him, then look at the equipment and carefully examine it from all sides. After the children independently study and get acquainted with the determinant frame, you can ask questions: “Guys, look what interesting equipment we have in our group. What shape is it? What do you see on it? How many pictures? (Children’s answers) . What is shown in the pictures? (Birds) . What do you think the window is for? What is this equipment for? How can we name it? (Children’s Assumptions) . Where can we use it? (Walking) . This equipment is called a guide frame, and it will help us learn a lot about birds. And tomorrow I will tell you and show you how we will use it. The next day, on a walk, the teacher takes the identification frame with him and shows the children how to use it: you need to select a bird, for example, on the feeder, send it to the window, and then find the desired picture on the identification frame and determine its name. Then the teacher reads the information that is on the back side « .

Let’s give an example of observing a sparrow using a guide frame on a walk in winter. For a walk, you need to take the identification frame «Wintering Birds» , the children are already familiar with the equipment. The goal is to consolidate ideas about the sparrow, its structure; to promote the development of observation in children when working with determinant frames. “Educator: Look carefully at the feeder, what kind of bird do you see? What do we need to do for this? Children’s answers (it is necessary to direct the identification frame to the feeder, select the bird and find it in the illustrations) . Who wants to determine today which bird is in the identification frame? At will, the child takes the identification frame, directs it to the feeder and everyone else begins to determine which bird? The teacher asks questions: What color is the bird? How does she look? Are there many such birds on the feeder? Invites children to read what kind of bird it is. As a result, the children conclude that the bird on the feeder is a sparrow, it is a wintering bird, brown. The sparrow has a small body of light brown color, and the rest of the body is (beak, legs, wings, tail) — dark brown with black feathers. After the bird is identified, the information about the sparrow, located on the reverse side of the identification frame, is read to the children. At the end of the walk, you can once again pass by the feeder and remember which bird was identified, fix its name, pick up words — definitions (small, disheveled, brown) »

Thus, having considered the significance of the use of visual aids, we can conclude that visibility plays an important role in the formation of ecological ideas about nature in older preschool children. Through the use of determinants, children acquire practical and research skills, as well as the necessary knowledge about the studied natural objects.
