What is mental arithmetic and why is it needed?
The world is actively changing and going digital — traditional school classes are being replaced by new methods and interactive tasks. The main task of parents is to find ways to help the child discover their talents and abilities, providing the missing skills. Mental arithmetic is a new word in education, because with the help of interesting tasks, young researchers not only master counting, but also develop thinking, memory, and intellectual abilities.
What is mental arithmetic?
Mental account t is a special program that has been successfully implemented in many countries. The methodology is recognized by UNESCO, the basics of this system are used in the Japanese elementary school. Its tasks are to teach children to count in the mind, as well as to quickly process and analyze information. The course of mental arithmetic was developed in Japan, but later the original scheme was improved:
- long lessons at a calm pace turned out to be irrelevant — they were replaced by active, task-rich classes;
- competent organization of the process — the training time was reduced, as the program was changed and the vector was shifted;
- from memorization to understanding — students no longer have to «cram» new information, they are happy to come to the lesson
The method is universal — it is suitable for those who have difficulty performing arithmetic operations, as well as for students who demonstrate outstanding mathematical abilities. The ideal time to start classes is the age from 5 to 11 years — during this period, children easily perceive and assimilate new information. Thanks to the right motivation and the desire of parents to help the child, learning will be easy and fun. The main thing is to observe the following conditions:
- systematic — even a few minutes of interactive homework every day will help form the right habits;
- discipline — no need to force and persuade, the student gets used to working independently, it remains only to give him this opportunity;
- Responsibility is work not to earn encouragement or praise, but for the sake of results.
Students attending mental arithmetic courses are open to knowledge and gladly take part in the learning process. This is useful in school life, because this approach allows you to make learning interesting. And most importantly, the child will not feel embarrassed due to poor grades or poor performance in mathematics or the humanities, because a good memory and information processing skills will be useful in any case.
Analytical skills are the basis of a successful life. Having learned to think logically, highlighting the grain of truth among other informational garbage, a person will be able to develop a competent strategy of action in any situation. And it is better to start dealing with this issue at preschool age, when the brain easily absorbs incoming knowledge.
Mental arithmetic — not only arithmetic operations
The body needs regular sports activities — this will help maintain health, as well as keep yourself in excellent physical shape. So it is with the brain — it must work, because development is possible only through overcoming difficulties. Thanks to mental arithmetic:
- creative abilities are developing — the child will be happy to engage in music, drawing, vocal art;
- self-control and a clear sequence of actions appear — the distribution of tasks, the search for simple but correct solutions that save time significantly;
- productivity increases — any tasks can be solved in the shortest possible time thanks to the active work of thought processes.
Modern children have to live in conditions of fierce competition, and in order to achieve certain heights, you will need to go beyond the usual limits. Contribution to intellectual development is the foundation of future achievements, which will become the basis for further self-improvement.
Who needs mental arithmetic courses?
The program is universal and accessible even for preschoolers. The course is worth taking for children who:
- inattentive, restless, distracted, often make minor mistakes and typos;
- experience learning difficulties and problems in understanding the exact sciences;
- demonstrate amazing math skills, and therefore need to gain additional knowledge in this area.
It is worth trying to discover the wondrous world of digital images, which allows you not only to gain unique skills, but also learn how to apply them in your studies and everyday life. After all, knowledge is the only value that remains with a person no matter what and allows you to conquer new heights, revealing your talents and surpassing your peers.

Doing mental arithmetic at home: TOP-20 tips!
Hello dears!
One of my favorite areas for in-depth study is child psychology and pedagogy. In addition, I receive a lot of questions related to these topics.
I periodically study the latest news in these areas, and recently discovered a new phenomenon for myself — mental arithmetic. This is a new way of teaching children to count, as a result of which, after a few months, the child is able to mentally calculate large multi-digit numbers.
The method involves both hemispheres of the brain, the training is gradual and deep, and in addition to the skill of quick counting, the student becomes more patient, diligent and attentive.
I thought that many parents who read my blog would be interested in learning more about this.
If you are interested in this kind of learning idea, this article will come in handy. In it, I will tell you what mental arithmetic is, what features it has and how to teach your baby in this way.
It will be difficult, but interesting! If you like the material, put likes and share links — I will be glad for feedback!

What is it?
Mental arithmetic is a mental development program that enables children aged 4 to 12-14 to learn how to perform math operations at high speed in their minds — without using a calculator, paper and pencil.
A child learns to perform mathematical operations faster than a calculator, using an abacus (abacus), a clear image of which is fixed in his memory. Thus, he no longer needs additional devices to solve simple and complex mathematical problems.
We have repeatedly heard the saying that a 2-year-old child can be taught a lot more than an older child, which is associated with the most active development of the child’s brain in early childhood.
The neural connections that determine the development of the brain are formed during the first years of a child’s life. And if you do not stimulate these compounds at this important stage, then they die off forever.
What is the action based on?
The program of mental arithmetic provides synchronous work of the right hemisphere of the brain, responsible for creative activity, and the left hemisphere, responsible for logical activity. Thanks to this, the child, while solving mathematical problems, can simultaneously sing, read poetry and even listen to the interlocutor and answer his questions. In the process of learning, the most ancient computing tool abacus (abacus) is used — a device consisting of a rectangular frame with bones that can be moved on knitting needles.
Using the abacus develops fine motor skills and allows the child to visualize the counting process. Gradually, children begin to count in their minds, working with imaginary scores — this is how the right hemisphere of the brain is connected, which is responsible for imagination, intuition, and creativity.
Especially students who cannot concentrate on the topic being taught feel the automatic resolution of this problem after taking a mental arithmetic course. This automatically improves the child’s performance in school.
Recall that a child can learn mental arithmetic only at the age of 4 to 12-14 years, since it is at this age that the most intensive development of the brain occurs. Further, the brain loses the ability to acquire complex skills.

Basic concepts
Recently, there has been a great increase in interest among parents in the early development of children. We all want our baby to easily cope with learning and become a successful person in the future.
Mental arithmetic is a relatively new direction in additional education. Practice with numbers gives amazing results. They not only teach the child to count quickly, but also make thinking work more voluminously, involving both the right hemisphere of the brain and the left.
What does she give?
Our achievements largely depend on mental abilities. Many people know that their formation is laid to a greater extent at an early age. In our country, more and more centers are opening that practice various methods of developing a child from 1.5 years and older.
The purpose of such classes is to develop attention, memory, creativity, etc. The school of mental arithmetic gives more extensive results. Teachers of this direction work with the mechanism of thinking.
They train neural connections with the help of mathematical calculations on special Chinese abacus. This develops both hemispheres of the brain and allows you to use your abilities more productively.
About activities
In childhood, the child’s brain is more plastic. Mental arithmetic classes are exercises that involve both hemispheres of the child’s brain, which develops imagination, memory, creative thinking, the ability to make decisions and concentrate when necessary.
The program is designed for children aged 4 to 12. The results of such training are high. Children who have been trained improve their academic performance, discover new opportunities in themselves and show more interest in learning. This is confirmed by the rapid spread of the method (it is already working in 52 countries of the world).

Practicing mental arithmetic on the abacus trains the brain. This is due to a series of exercises:
- Working with the right and left hand;
- Working with imaginary accounts;
- Visual representation of mathematical operations;
- Fine motor skills.
Is it possible to study at home?
Many mothers are wondering if it is possible to conduct mental arithmetic classes with children at home? Of course, there is such a possibility. However, it must be understood that in order to teach a child, we first need to master the method ourselves.
It will be difficult to study on your own, because most of us were trained according to the traditional program, based mainly on the use of logical thinking. Fortunately, today mental arithmetic courses are open in many large cities, where not only future teachers, but also mothers can study. Having mastered the method, we can teach our children at home. It should be noted that such activities are quite interesting and will certainly captivate the child.
In addition to knowledge, you will need a special subject for learning — the abacus abacus. This is a calculation tool that has been around for over 3,000 years. First, the child learns to work directly with the accounts. Thanks to them, he quickly masters addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and even the method of extracting the square root.
Then, learning moves to another level, where the child works without counting, just imagining the instrument. Studying at home, you can independently buy an abacus for mental arithmetic and download books (manuals from the educational company XiangLiangEducation).

Helpful Tips
In order for children to grow up as smart and well-rounded personalities, it is necessary to work with them even before school. Yes, and while studying in primary school, you should not give up this business either, since the education system is not aimed at revealing the creative potential and unique abilities of each student.
Most schools are guided by a template method, which is not suitable for all children. So parents should take the initiative into their own hands and help their heirs become more erudite.
For more than two millennia, mental arithmetic has been an excellent method of development for children aged four to 15 years. With its correct application, you can teach your child to carry out operations with four-digit numbers in the mind even before school, and not even all adults can do this.
What else to look for?
In mental arithmetic, all calculations are made using an abacus, a Japanese counting device. It is similar to the trading accounts we are used to, which were used by sellers before the advent of calculators, only here you need to use both hands. This allows you to actively develop both hemispheres of the brain at the same level.
So the child will be fine not only with rational thinking, but also with the creative component. After a while, the baby will begin to perform computational operations without an abacus, simply imagining it in his head. It looks amazing, but hundreds of examples show that it is quite possible to learn this at home, if you really want to.
Children’s memory will improve, and they will be able to store all the data in a clearly structured form, so that they can easily cope with lessons and engage in any creative activity. Parents can study with their kids on their own if they simply download lessons on the Internet and purchase the necessary parts for classes. It will be necessary to develop an effective system of encouragement and motivation so that the child tries during the lessons and really learns, and not just serves the number.
In many Western schools, mental arithmetic is the basis of education, so that in ordinary schools children are taught using this technique.
The domestic system has not yet reached this point, but it is possible to start using this effective technique at home without centralized instructions.

Further — more interesting!
People have started talking about mental arithmetic in Russia quite recently: a new unique method for developing mental abilities has come to us. Parents discuss the successes of their children on the forums, on Channel One in the Malakhov program, children perform and amaze the audience with their skills.
It seems incredible, but thanks to this technique, even kindergarten-aged kids solve problems with three-digit numbers in their heads. And quickly and correctly! However, the “salt” of the technique is not at all in the skill of quick counting. It’s just a beneficial side effect.
The main meaning of the classes is deeper: mental arithmetic helps to form neural connections of the brain, steadily develops the speed and quality of thinking.
Moreover, this requires very little involvement: one full-fledged lesson per week plus homework for 15-20 minutes a day.
Turn on both hemispheres
Mental arithmetic harmoniously develops both hemispheres of the brain. The left hemisphere is responsible for logic and high IQ, the ability to concentrate on a task, memory and observation skills. The right hemisphere — gives high creative potential, intuition, imagination, self-confidence, independence. And only the active inclusion of both hemispheres helps to maximize the intellectual and creative potential.
The modern system of education is aimed at the development of the left hemisphere, so most of today’s people work better, they are good performers, responsible workers.
And only a few lucky people use both hemispheres at the same time: they become initiative, creative, inspired figures and at the same time collected and attentive. But this is precisely the path to success, to a rich and joyful life.
What are we learning?
Of course, parents do not bring their children to classes so that they learn to count faster than a calculator. The technique helps to solve a whole range of tasks: concentration of attention; photographic memory training; perseverance and self-discipline; instant counting of multi-digit numbers in the mind; training the skill of simultaneously solving several problems; rapid development of foreign languages; Confidence in your strength; creative thinking.
Workload?
Sometimes parents complain that their children are already busy preparing for school, or homework, tutoring, music school, sports training… And one more lesson seems like an extra load. If not for one “but”: mental arithmetic just teaches the brain to “unload” and concentrate at the right moments, optimize thought processes, distribute the load, and easily deal with multitasking.
In this way, children cope with their studies easier and faster, save time and effort, they gain self-confidence. In today’s world, this is a very important competitive advantage. And if you consider that by the time our girls and boys grow up, the world will only become more complicated, then it is all the more important to give children a good base for a successful and happy life.
When is the best time to start?
Mental arithmetic classes are held for children from 4 to 16 years old. When it is better to start, the family decides, but the sooner the child begins to study, the more effective the process will be. This is due to the fact that with age, the activity of neural connections decreases, and their work has to be restored.
Neuropsychologists have been talking about the plasticity of the brain for a long time: we can develop it at any age, it’s just that babies with a more plastic and «alive» neural structure will find it easier to learn new skills. Moreover, in mental arithmetic there is an opportunity to work with “special children”.
There are examples of great success in teaching children with dyslexia and autism spectrum disorders.
In the West, people of advanced age are also engaged in mental arithmetic — for the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.
How are the classes going?
Training is structured as follows: once a week, for 2 academic hours, the child is engaged in mini-groups of 6-8 people using methodological materials and an abacus (abacus), and special software is also used. In the classroom, children move the bones on the abacus with their fingers (fine motor skills) and thus learn to perform arithmetic operations physically.
They then learn to visualize the abacus in their minds (figurative memory) and solve problems by moving imaginary bones. So the child is given a task, he «puts» the numbers into the left hemisphere, then instantly moves them to the «high-speed» right hemisphere, where the numbers are converted into a picture — an imaginary abacus is created.
A decision is made on it, and the information moves back to the left hemisphere, which converts the picture into numbers and gives the answer. Thus, both hemispheres of the brain are involved and the connection between them is strengthened. It is very important to strengthen the skill of mental counting daily, and a computer program allows children to do this at home, devoting only 15-20 minutes a day to training. Homework is monitored and, if necessary, corrected by the coach.
Then the children learn to read poetry and solve problems in their head at the same time, and then the program becomes more complicated… easier to remember foreign words, easier to cope with homework.
Duration of training — 2-2.5 years, depending on individual characteristics. During this time, the child consolidates the skill of holistic perception and rapid processing of information.
Currently, mental arithmetic is used in 52 countries around the world. Two of the world’s leading powers, Japan and China, use a special abacus to teach children in a public elementary school. And in Russia, this is not a «newfangled curiosity», but just a well-forgotten old one.
Modern observations show that abacus helps students achieve excellent results in mathematics, and the rejection of them in school reduces the mobility of the mind.

Summing up
Mental arithmetic is a program for the development of the child’s intellectual and mental abilities. Its basis is an improved abacus counting system. Speed mental counting or mental arithmetic at the Soroban School is one of the most effective methods for the full development of children.
In the process of learning, the child learns to solve any arithmetic problems, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, calculating the square root of a number in a few seconds in his mind faster than using a calculator.
Mental arithmetic actively stimulates all parts of the brain in equal proportions due to the work with two hands. We work with the left hand — we develop creative abilities, we connect the right hand — we improve logical thinking.
Traditionally, the course lasts 2-2.5 years. To achieve amazing results, an hour of classes per week and homework — 15 minutes a day is enough.
Advantages of mental arithmetic Soroban
- greater speed of thought processes
- excellent adaptation to any brain load
- speed of information analysis
- non-standard thinking
- imaginative perception and spatial thinking
- visual memory training
- concentration and mindfulness
- self-confidence
Japanese abacus Soroban
Soroban — Japanese abacus (abacus, abacus). This is a rectangular structure, divided by a bar into two parts: with «earthly» (lower) and «heavenly» (upper) bones. The lower bones (4 in each column) indicate units, the upper ones (1 in each column) indicate five.
The abacus is designed so that one number can be represented in only one way — that is, each number has a clearly marked visual image.
Children learn how to count on the soroban, starting with the numbers from 0 to 9 and the simplest actions with them. At first, they use abacus (using the fingers of both hands in working with the abacus), but gradually the visual images of numbers are so firmly fixed in memory that the child no longer needs abacus to perform actions — he just needs to imagine them.
What age is mental arithmetic designed for? turn already familiar numbers into visual images of bones on the abacus.
5-11 years — it is at this time that all efforts give the most amazing results. At this age, the foundation is laid that determines our opportunities throughout life.
This will be an excellent preparation for your child to study at school, and for children in grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 — the opportunity to continue their development.
