Pregnancy is a wonderful experience and brings many changes to a woman’s body. Here at Garden OB/GYN, one of the changes that our patients mention most often is swollen feet.

Swollen feet occur as a result of additional fluid buildup. This buildup of fluids is caused by hormonal changes which allow the body to become more flexible. This increased flexibility is referred to as ligamentous laxity. It helps loosen the ligaments to prepare a woman’s body for the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth.

While this process is a normal part of pregnancy, there are some practices that expecting mothers can incorporate to mitigate the symptoms of swollen feet.

We’re always looking for new ways to serve our community so we caught up with Doctor Benjamin Tehrani, top Podiatric Surgeon, Founder of Kings Point Foot & Ankle and creator of Nerve Assist.

As a top-rated provider in Los Angeles, Dr. Tehrani was happy to share some advice to help our patients alleviate some of the newfound foot pain they may be experiencing. Below are some of the tips that he shared along with our very own Garden OB/GYN Family Nurse Practitioner, Casey-Ann Collins. 


Wear compression stockings

Pregnant women can use compression socks to help improve the circulation in their feet, which can also help ease achiness and swelling. While they are a great tool for pregnant women, compression socks can be worn by anyone experiencing foot pain.

For instance, they are great for people who do a lot of standing throughout the day. Doctor Benjamin Tehrani uses them during his busy days treating his patients.

Soak your feet in epsom salt and warm water

Use Epsom soaks to relieve your foot pain. As a bonus, adding a few drops of essential oil like lavender can really help elevate the experience and provide deeper relaxation.

Stay hydrated

Hydration is a must in normal circumstances, but it becomes even more essential while carrying a child. Water is used for building amniotic fluid, flushing toxins, carrying nutrients, and more. Thus, plenty of water is key to ensuring a healthy baby.

Wear the right footwear

Doctor Benji recommends supportive shoes like Birkenstocks and Vionics for improved comfort. Both brands boast footbeds that conform easily to swollen feet. Of course, there are other brands on the market, but these happen to be at the top of Doctor Benji’s recommendations.

Use a Theragun around calves, ball of the foot, and heel

A Theragun is a handheld massage device that uses percussive therapy to remedy muscle pain and soreness. This product is a must-have for pregnant women which provides deep tissue relief.

Stretch your calves

When was the last time you tried calf stretches? We hope the answer was today! Calf stretches can be a great release to tightness and soreness in the calf muscles. 

Low Impact Exercises to keep blood circulating

Low impact exercises allow you to get your body moving while avoiding injury. Moreover, they are joint-friendly so they are fairly accessible to pregnant women. Swimming, yoga and cycling are all examples of low-impact activities.

Massage using Nerve Assist Freeze gel

DIY Pregnancy Foot Soak — Doulas of Long Beach

Pregnancy can be a time of great happiness, joy and excitement. But it can also suck at times — especially with all of the bodily changes you go through. The stretch marks, the aching hips, the sore breasts — just to name a few. But one of the most common complaints of pregnancy (especially towards the end) are the swollen feet and ankles. As your blood volume increases and your circulation slows, edema (swelling) can occur at any time during pregnancy, but becomes more painful and more frustrating as the months go on.

Caring for your self is crucial in pregnancy, so today I’m sharing a luxurious, yet simple DIY for a homemade pregnancy foot soak. This soak is geared towards relaxation and time to destress while also helping reduce swelling and soreness in your feet.

Simple Ingredients for A DIY Pregnancy Foot Soak

  1. 1¼ cups of Epsom salt.

    When added to water epsom salts break down into two components: magnesium and sulfate. These components are known to have useful properties that draw moisture out of your tissue and help your aching feet feel better.

  2. 1¼ cups of Kosher or Himalayan salt.

    These help stimulate circulation.

  3. 5 drops of lavender essential oil*

    Lavender is soothing and addresses inflammation.

  4. 3-5 drops of peppermint essential oil*

    Peppermint is cooling and anti-inflammatory.

  5. Optional: A glass container for storage

    If you like you can double or triple the batch so you don’t have to make a new batch each time. A mason jar with a tight sealing lid works great for longer term storage. If you do make ahead, you’ll mix all the dry ingredients together and store in the jar then add the essential oils when you’re ready to enjoy your soak.

How to Make Your Homemade Foot Soak

Once you’ve gathered all of your ingredients, prepare a bowl or pail with warm water large enough to accommodate both of your feet.

  1. Prepare a large bowl or tub with enough warm water to cover up to your ankles when your feet are submerged

  2. Add epsom salt and kosher salt to your bowl or tub — swish around with your hands to help the salts dissolve.

  3. Add your preferred essential oils.

  4. Find a comfy chair and relax for 10-15 minutes while your feet soak. This is a great time to listen to pregnancy affirmations or practice some deep breathing techniques in preparation for labor.

Using this homemade foot soak is an inexpensive and easy way to reduce the foot swelling that is oh so common in pregnancy. It also allows you to take time each day to focus on your own self-care and put practices in place that you can take with you into motherhood.

Swelling of the legs during pregnancy: the main causes

Many pregnant women, especially in the later stages, have swollen legs. They swell and increase in size. This is due to the accumulation of excess interstitial fluid in the tissues. However, it is also worth checking the condition of the veins, especially if they swell and spider veins appear on the skin. To do this, in our clinic you can do an ultrasound scan in Cheboksary.

Physiological causes of edema

The accumulation of fluid in the legs is normal, especially in the 3rd trimester. This happens because the adrenal glands produce more hormones that stimulate this process. It also happens due to the accumulation of sodium in the vessels. This chemical element delays the excretion of fluid from the body.

Another cause of edema is an enlarged uterus, which compresses blood vessels and affects blood flow from the legs to the heart. As a result, fluid accumulates in the veins and enters the surrounding tissues.

Blood volume increases by about 40% during pregnancy. Due to the changed hormonal situation, vascular resistance also decreases. The veins are dilated, the blood can no longer drain in sufficient quantities to the pelvic area. The pressure of the stomach causes venous «back pressure» in the legs. As a result, water can more easily leave the bloodstream and enter the intercellular spaces of the connective tissue. Two thirds of pregnant women suffer from physiological edema.

Other causes of swelling of the legs

It can also be due to diseases. In deep vein thrombosis, blood clots form in the veins, often in the legs. Pregnancy increases the risk of this condition: the body makes more proteins that help blood clot. This is to prevent excessive bleeding during childbirth. Changes during pregnancy can cause blood to pool in the veins, thereby contributing to the formation of blood clots. If a woman cannot move much, there is an even greater chance of stagnation of blood in the veins and the formation of a blood clot. When a blood clot breaks off, it can travel to the lungs and block blood flow there. Blockage of the pulmonary artery can be fatal.

Pre-eclampsia during pregnancy increases blood pressure and the amount of protein in the urine. Fluids may collect, causing swelling of the face, arms, or legs and weight gain. Severe preeclampsia can cause damage to organs such as the brain, kidneys, lungs, or liver. This can also cause complications in the child. Peripartum cardiomyopathy causes shortness of breath and fatigue, as well as swelling.

If in the morning a swollen face with bags under the eyes looks at you, and in the evening you cannot take off your favorite ring, or your legs turn into sausages, you may have lymph stagnation. BUT this is just one of the possible reasons.

Causes of edema.

In general, edema is the accumulation of interstitial fluid in the body. This can be a temporary phenomenon — if you ate pickles at your grandmother or drank an extra cocktail at a party (salt and alcohol retain water). In a healthy person, edema may occur in the evenings after heavy physical exertion or prolonged standing as a result of an increase in hydrostatic pressure in the blood vessels. The likelihood of swelling in the heat increases, when you are in a stuffy room or at high altitude. Swelling of the legs is especially common in women when wearing shoes with high heels or high platforms. Due to the unnatural location of the foot, blood circulation in the lower extremities is significantly worsened, which leads to stagnation and accumulation of fluid.

In women, before the onset of menstruation, the concentration of progesterone in the blood decreases, due to which fluid can be retained, causing swelling and puffiness. The swelling is most pronounced with PMS.

But if you constantly swell, then you should contact a specialist to find out the cause of the ailments, because the causes of swelling can be very diverse, including problems with the heart and kidneys.

How magnesium can help

Magnesium is a trace element involved in more than 500 processes inside the body.

Most magnesium is found not in the bloodstream, but inside the cells. When it is not enough, the following happens:

  • The water-salt balance is disturbed. The concentration of sodium increases, the increase of which is one of the factors in the accumulation of fluid.
  • Blood pressure rises. The walls of blood vessels with an insufficient amount of magnesium spasm, their volume decreases. This leads to an increase in pressure in the capillaries.
  • Increases the permeability of cell membranes. Therefore, under excess pressure, the fluid from the capillaries passes into the cells, they increase in size. All fabric becomes more voluminous.
  • Hormonal imbalance. Magnesium deficiency affects the synthesis of many hormones, including aldosterone, which maintains a normal ratio of sodium and potassium salts in order to ensure sufficient water retention in the body.

If the body receives the required dose of magnesium, then everything falls into place: the water-salt and hormonal balance normalizes, the pressure in the capillaries and the permeability of tissue cell membranes decrease. Excess fluid goes into the blood, then to the kidneys and leaves the body with urine.

Magnesium anti-edema baths

Magnesium against edema is best used in the form of magnesium baths with Epsom salt. With their help, the body absorbs this element in the required amount through the skin, without the risk of overdose.

Another advantage of magnesium salt baths over oral preparations is the speed of obtaining the expected effect. Since Epsom salts dissolved in warm water expand the pores, increase lymphatic drainage and sweating. So magnesium relieves swelling and removes excess water from tissues, reducing body volume and even weight.
