Tackle Trigraphs with a Printable Trigraphs List
Trigraphs are three-letter combinations that create one phoneme (sound). They can be found at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of words. This list of 40 words containing some of the more common trigraphs in the English language has been compiled to assist you in implementing your phonics program in your classroom.
Trigraph Examples Included:
- dge (as in bridge)
- igh (as in sigh)
- ear (as in beard)
- eer (as in cheer)
- tch (as in fetch)
- ere (as in there)
- oul (as in could)
- ore (as in store)
- are (as in care)
- air (as in flair)
- ere (as in here)
Multiple Applications for This Trigraphs List
This list of words containing trigraphs can be used in numerous ways to support the diverse needs of your learners during your literacy sessions. Here are some of our suggestions:
Consonant Trigraphs Group Challenge
Place the students into small groups. Provide them with large pieces of butcher’s paper and markers. Provide each group with a different trigraph from the list. Challenge the students to write down as many words as they can think of that contain their assigned trigraph within a set time period, e.g five minutes. The group that comes up with the most words is the word list champion!
Individual practice
Send the lists home so your students can revise decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) the words on the list. Be sure to include only words containing letter-sound correspondences you have already addressed in class.
Combine With a Consonant Digraphs List for Progress Monitoring
When combined with a consonant digraphs list, use this list as a progress monitoring tool to keep track of your student’s phonemic awareness and to identify the digraphs and trigraphs that require further review.

An example of using Cerebro: Trigraph Studio – Cerebro
Today Konstantin Kharitonov is talking to the heads of the Moscow VFX studio Trigraph — Arkady Dubinin (supervisor) and Olga Nikulina (producer).
Konstantin Kharitonov: Let’s start with the history of your company, what is your profile, what do you do…
Arkady Dubinin: Trigraph was founded in late 2004 by three people: Vladimir Sokolov, Sergey Zaporozhtsev and myself. The first project was the series The Master and Margarita, there was a very large amount of work related to serious three-dimensional graphics: filming on Motion Control and character animation. Then there were 2 films of the company «Central Partnership» — «Piranha Hunt» and «Countdown». In total, we took part in the creation of more than 40 films.
What projects are you currently working on?
A.D.: Basically, we make feature films, sometimes serials. Until the end of last year, they did not make commercials at all, but in December 2011, nevertheless, we decided that advertising and a music video were also an interesting business for us and made a series of commercials for VTB, with the DTVMA agency and a music video for one pop group.
In the «crisis year of 2008» — we switched to service specialization, i.e., we were engaged in in-line things, such as cleanup, product placement, etc. But in the last 2 years, starting with Generation P, we returned to complex high-tech effects, restored the 3D animation department, and in new projects we will already have full-fledged character animation with complex effects.
And in which — can you elaborate?
A.D .: For example, now we have taken one interesting series from our old acquaintances, the director on it is Evgeny Bedarev, with whom we worked on the film “New Year’s Tariff”. The series is called «While the Fern Blooms» — this is a 12-episode youth film, with elements of mysticism, it is for him that we have already begun to make several monster characters and a large amount of «magic».
Wow, cool! And now back to history: how long ago and on what project did you start using Cerebro ? Olga Nikulina: We used Cerebro for the first time a year ago, on the series «Hokkaido Police» by UMP. There were 12 episodes and 121 shots — a small project that still had to be done quickly. At that moment, we had just purchased Cerebro and immediately gave it a “test by combat”, which passed with flying colors.
How long did the project last?
O.N.: 2 months from receipt of technical specifications to complete completion. The editing of the series and the terms of reference changed on the go, as is often the case. The use of silver made it possible not to get confused in all these changes, to convey information to the performers in time and get the result.
And when did you realize that Cerebro «got accustomed» in your team?
O.N.: It immediately became clear. Everyone instantly felt more comfortable.
A.D.: The story was simple: at that time, a large number of ScreamSchool graduates trained at our studio, 10 people in total. ScreamSchool students, they all use Cerebro. And those three of our team who were not familiar with Cerebro just had to agree with J.
Which functional Cerebro do you use every day, which one rarely?
O.N.: Every day we use task forums for communication, we often use the commenting system for text and drawn comments. Of the rarely used — statistics (once a month we collect statistics on users).
How often do you use voice commentary features?
ON: Rarely, although it is, in principle, convenient.
AD: We tried to apply it. When work is outsourced, this is probably convenient, but now it’s about 95% of the work is done inside the studio, so if you need to give any «voice comments», then the supervisor or artist simply approaches the performer in person.
Well, yes, there is such a dependence: the farther people are from each other, the more willingly they use Cerebro for voice comments … And what versions of Cerebro do you use — Mac , 900 04 Windows , Linux , Web or maybe iPhone / iPad ?
AD: Mac and Windows, sometimes iPhone.
Do your customers interact with you through Cerebro ?
AD: Yes. For example, on the series that we are currently doing.
In terms of function, who are these people?
A.D.: Most often it is either a producer or a director, sometimes an external supervisor. For example, on the project “That Carloson!” our external supervisor was Zhenya Barulin.
O.N.: The post-producers of Direction Kino, by the way, are well acquainted with Cerebro, if necessary, they can log in and comment on the shot right there
Is it difficult for new external users to master the system?
A.D.: No, but we were lucky with that too: the above-mentioned people already had experience working with Cerebro, they got used to it a long time ago.
How convenient is the program interface in your opinion?
A.D.: It depends on what tasks. In particular, the forum is very convenient and familiar, because everyone already writes on Facebook — therefore, by analogy, everything is simple and clear. But in terms of displaying administrative functions, everything is somewhat more complicated …
What are the specific suggestions for improvement?
O.N.: For me, this is entering data directly into the fields of the Navigator, i.e., so that you don’t have to go to the Task Properties in order, for example, to assign a tag or change some other task parameter.
A.D.: In other words, I would like to have inline editing in the Navigator.
What else?
A.D.: I really miss some initial form of creating a task, with standard fields for the entire project. If not a «wired form», then at least a form editor. It would be nice to have the same form editor for reports — so that reports for producers are downloaded immediately in the form of a «beautiful» PDF file. And another very important thing — so that the first definition in the forum thread could be fixed, as the top line is fixed in Excel, for example — so as not to lose the essence of the task in a long comment thread.
O.N.: There are also wishes regarding access rights: I would like users who have access to a specific task to be displayed in a separate column of the Navigator — similar to how assigned performers are displayed in the “assigned” column. And so that in the «Properties of the task» they are displayed immediately, without pressing any other buttons. And so that there is a color coding of tasks associated with tags: you select a tag — the task is repainted in any color.
Thank you, we will try to take into account for the future! Last question: are there any third-party applications that you think would be worth integrating Cerebro with?
A.D.: Programs for viewing — Frame Cycler or PDPlayer, programs for render management and asset management.
This, of course, we can do. First of all, let’s integrate with our render manager DUMA .
AD: Thank you!
Thank you also for the interview 🙂
