11 best activities for learning numbers from one to ten

The sooner we teach children the concept of numbers and show them the difference between numbers and letters, the more successful their further learning will be. What is the best way to teach kids numbers and counting from 1 to 10?

Make them sit for hours and help them learn.

Learning can be much more fun and effective with interesting activities and games.

Here we list some of the most brilliant ideas for games and activities to learn numbers from 1 to 10 for children aged 4,5,6. Most of the training sessions here will require things that are easily available at home.

In addition, you can always check out our free printable math worksheets from 1 to 10.

1. DIY painting

What you need: paper, paints and cotton buds.

For this activity, you will give the children outlines of the numbers 1 to 10. The children should trace the outline with paint using cotton swabs. They can use different colors to color the numbers. You can use our selection of numbers.

What you will need: colored paper, pens.

In this exercise you will write the same numbers in pairs. For example, there will be two papers labeled «1», two other papers labeled «2», etc. etc. Use our number packs to print out the numbers.

Then you need to divide these twenty sheets into two sets, each of which has numbers from 1 to 10. Then leave the first set of numbers on the table, and hide the other set at home in different places — under the bed, under the book, behind the table, on bookshelf, etc.

Children need to take a number from the first set on the table and say it out loud. Then they need to find an identical number in the house. You can give them hints to help them find the numbers faster.

3. Popping numbers

What you will need: balloons, balloon pump, markers, safety pins.

To complete this task, you need to inflate some balloons and mark them with numbers from 1 to 10 using markers. Glue the balloons to the table so that the numbers written on them are visible to the children.

Then you will say the number out loud and the children will have to find the numbered balloon and pop it with safety pins.

4. Draw and cut

What you will need: paper, pencils/pens, scissors.

The children now need to sort the numbers in the table in ascending order. The child who sorts the numbers the fastest gets an extra cookie.

For this fun practice of numbers from 1 to 10, you have to mark the numbers on the paper, as well as the shape in which you want to cut the paper.

For example, draw the number «1» and circle it. Children will need to trace the numbers with crayons/pens and cut out the circle with scissors.

5. Sort the unsorted

What you need: number cards.

Shuffle the cards.

The children now need to sort the numbers in the table in ascending order. The child who sorts the numbers the fastest gets an extra cookie.

6. Jump number

What you need: mat, paper and markers.

To complete this task, you first need to write the numbers from 1 to 10 on different sheets of paper and stick them on the mat. Keep some distance between numbers.

You will say the number out loud and have the children jump to that number on the mat while saying the number out loud.

7. Train number decor

What you will need: a toy train, paper, felt-tip pens, decorations, glue, paints.

With markers, children should write the numbers from 1 to 10 on different cars of the toy train.

They can then color the number sheets in different colors and decorate individual cars and license plates with shiny stickers.

8. Where are all the numbers?

What you need: sand, paper, markers, small container.

This activity encourages children to look up and sort numbers from 1 to 10.

Take enough sand in a small container. Cut the paper into smaller pieces and write the numbers from 1 to 10. Then hide all these pieces of paper in the sand.

The children must find all the numbers and sort them in ascending order.

The winner will be the child who can complete the task in the least amount of time!

9. Plasticine numbers

What you need: plasticine.

Plasticine can help you learn many things — alphabets, numbers and more. In this exercise, children have to make numbers from plasticine.

10. Numbered orange tree

What you need: paper, pencils or paints and scissors.

In this exercise the children draw and cut out the outline of a tree on paper. Not very complex, but a simple tree. They should color the tree with green pencil or green paint.

Next, they need to draw ten oranges on paper and cut them out as well. Color the oranges. Remember that the oranges must be small so that they can be glued to the tree.

Then the children should write the numbers 1 to 10 on the oranges and stick them on the tree.

11. Locate and tag

What you will need: stickers with numbers from 1 to 10, any ten items in the house.

This is a fun activity in which you have to hide any 10 items in the house and make a list of these items. Give the children stickers with numbers from 1 to 10 and tell them one by one about these items. They will need to find these objects and label them with numbers.

For example, if they find the first item, say a red handkerchief, they will put a sticker on it with the number «1» and tell you that they have found the first item.

The first child to complete the task of finding and tagging all ten items will be the champion!
