Home / Information for parents

According to orthopedists, the main cause of flat feet is improperly selected shoes. How can parents choose the right shoes and not make a mistake when buying. Mistakes can be avoided if you approach the choice of children’s shoes «With a head». It is also impossible to delay the choice of the first pair of shoes — the child needs support from the first steps. Shoes should not be too tight, but too loose shoes also lead to fatigue in the legs, fatigue when walking, and back pain. The child’s legs are not yet fully formed and are mainly made up of cartilage. The fat layer, which is still preserved on the child’s foot, reduces sensitivity to pain, and even if the shoes are tight for the child, deforming the foot, the baby does not feel it. The foot «ossifies» by 6-7 years. Therefore, parents should take care that their child does not wear shoes that are too small or too large. To do this, it is necessary to measure the child’s leg every 3 months. In addition, it must be remembered that the growth rate of children’s feet at different ages is different: at the age of 2 and 3 years, the foot increases by approximately 2 sizes per year; at school age — by 1-2 sizes per year.

How to correctly measure the length of the foot:

1) To do this, place the baby on a hard, flat surface on a sheet of paper and circle the foot; hold the pencil strictly vertically.

2) Measure the distance from the heel to the tip of the big toe of both feet — usually they are the same, but sometimes the difference in length can be up to 6 mm — you should focus on the larger measurement result.
To determine the size of the foot in children aged 0 to 1 year, we recommend using a string (string), which can then be measured with a ruler. The result obtained can be compared with the dimensions indicated in the metric table.

Choose the shoe size with a small margin, because while walking, especially in the heat, the foot swells a little, increases in size and stretches under the weight of the body, and the toes move forward, besides, the toes need a little space for movement, so add another 5-6 mm to the resulting length. During the season, the child’s leg will grow up, and this reserve will certainly be filled. For this reason, never buy your child shoes «back to back». In winter, there should be empty space in boots and boots, creating a warming effect.
Buying shoes with a large margin — more than a centimeter — is also bad: firstly, the arch support will be out of place (flat feet prevention will not only come to naught, but can also contribute to improper foot formation), and secondly, the child will stumble, beat the toes shoes and the gait may be formed incorrectly (this article is advisory in nature!).
