/ Contractions Worksheet
Contractions are very popular in the English language. They make writing and reading easier, and are mostly used in informal writing. Contractions are the combination of two words to make one, with an apostrophe between them. For example; I am = I’m, they are = they’re, she is = she’s, and so on. Ask your students if they can give you some more popular contractions. Then, read the sentences in this worksheet and help them check the correct contraction to replace the words in bold.

Still a top favorite for our 7 year old. She loves earning her stars as she learns to trace letters and numbers. Coloring and the sounds are engaging and are on target for her age group and being Pre K.

Childbirth in a dog. Help from a reproctologist veterinarian
Childbirth in a dog: whelping
Veterinarian obstetrician: help during childbirth
Whelping your dog is a long-awaited, joyful, and at the same time a little disturbing event. Of course, every loving owner worries about his «child». “Will everything go well? Will I be able to correctly assess the situation and provide the necessary timely assistance to the dog during childbirth? he thinks.
It is necessary to know the fundamental aspects of the physiology of dog labor in order to call the veterinarian at home in time in case of any complications.
Depending on the breed of dog, its size, build, character and physical form, the processes of whelping vary significantly. But regardless of breed, a bitch should not be left unattended during whelping. Most bitches living in close contact with a man find it much easier to give birth with the attention and help of the owner. With the approach of childbirth, it is necessary to choose a place for whelping the bitch. A wooden box with an entrance at a height of 7-10 cm from the floor is well suited. For small breed dogs, a cardboard box or a special bed with sides is suitable. At the bottom of the place it is better to put baby disposable absorbent diapers. The bitch can be transferred to the whelping place in advance.
3-5 days before the expected birth (whelping) you need to notify the veterinarian.
Duration of gestation in dogs
Duration of gestation in bitches is usually between 60 and 63 days, but can range from 56 to 72 days from the day of first mating to delivery. This variation is explained by the duration of the estrus. The true duration of pregnancy is determined by endocrinological methods and is 63 + 1 day from the day of ovulation (egg release).
Large litters are born earlier and small ones a little later. In small breeds, bitches usually give birth earlier than average. Litter size ranges from one pup in dwarf breeds to 15 or more pups in large breeds. Young females usually give birth to few puppies, at 3-4 years the number of litters increases, and as the animal ages, it decreases again.
Signs of approaching labor in a dog
An objective sign of approaching labor is a decrease in the rectal (in the anus) body temperature of the animal, which is caused by a sharp decrease in the level of progesterone. In dwarf breeds, the temperature can drop to 35 C, and in large breeds it rarely drops below 37 C. About a day before giving birth, bitches begin to worry, hide, refuse food. True, there are times when the bitch does not refuse food at all. 12-24 hours before giving birth, bitches begin to dig, arrange a den. These signs are caused by uterine contractions (contractions) starting.
Stages of the birth of dogs
The birth of bitches can be divided into 3 stages.
1st stage of labor for a dog
The first stage of labor for a bitch usually lasts 6-12 hours, but sometimes reaches 36 hours.
Bitches are restless, looking at their belly, they are short of breath, dogs scratch the bedding, some may vomit. During this period, the rectal temperature remains reduced.
The contractions of the uterus become strong and regular, the birth canal is prepared, the cervix opens, the fetuses (puppies) take a longitudinal position, the membranes rupture.
2nd stage of labor for a dog
The second stage of labor for a bitch lasts 3-12, but sometimes 24 hours. Rectal temperature rises to normal or slightly higher. The contractions of the abdominal muscles (attempts) join the contractions, the chorio-allontoic fetal membrane is torn, and a clear liquid flows out.
The first fetus, covered with an amniotic membrane, usually appears within 4 hours. Normally, bitches rupture the fetal membrane, lick the newborn and gnaw through the umbilical cord.
Often the bitch does not do this herself, then the owner or veterinarian should come to her aid. The veterinarian ruptures the membranes and cuts off the umbilical cord in a certain way. If the owner delivers himself and does not know how to tear off the umbilical cord, he can cut it off at a distance of 4 cm from the puppy, having previously applied a ligature.
When is veterinary care needed in the second stage of the bitch?
Complications can occur during the second stage of labor, in which a house call to the veterinarian is a must. So veterinary care is needed when strong attempts occur for 20-30 minutes, and the birth of puppies does not occur. You should call the veterinarian at home if weak attempts are observed for more than 2 hours. Veterinary services are needed if the interval between the birth of puppies is more than 2-4 hours. It is also necessary to call a veterinarian at home if the second stage of labor lasts more than 12 hours, if brownish-greenish discharge from the vagina is observed, and no puppies are born.
3rd stage of dog labor
The third stage of dog labor is characterized by expulsion of the placenta and contraction of the uterine horns. Occurs 15 minutes after the birth of the fetus. Quite often puppies are born together with a placenta. However, before the expulsion of the placenta, 2-3 fetuses can be born. A bitch can be allowed to eat 1-2 placentas. The placenta contains a huge amount of specialized proteins and hormones that stimulate uterine contractions and lactation.
Postnatal period in dogs
In the postpartum period, the female has postpartum discharge — lochia for 3 weeks, they may have a greenish tint.
When is 3rd stage veterinary care needed?
A house call is required if the animal’s rectal temperature is above 39.5 C. The animal needs veterinary care if not all placentas have passed within 4-6 hours. A house veterinarian should also be called when lochia contains pus or has a putrid odor. Veterinary services are necessary when there is prolonged bleeding from the external genitalia, and, finally, a veterinarian should be called to the house in case of deterioration in the general condition of the bitch or puppies.
