Finding something cute to wear while pregnant is difficult enough; now that the temperatures are on the rise, it can make it that much tougher to find cute options that will also keep you feeling cool. (See what I did there. 😉 ) This is why I’ve created a fashion formula for your Spring/Summer maternity capsule wardrobe with key pieces that’ll see you all the way through your pregnancy.
These are my top ten Spring & Summer maternity must-haves items and I’ve included lots of options for you to look at within each category. This guide will help you build your perfect maternity capsule wardrobe!
1. Tops
I feel like you can never have enough tops, but when you’re building a capsule wardrobe, you only really need a few basic/classic pieces. (This also helps if you’re on a budget.) Select between 4-6 classic tops/tees that you can dress up and down and mix and match. I’m all about neutrals and stripes because they can go with everything, and stripes always look so cute on expecting mamas. At least I think so! With the summer heat around the corner, the best styles to opt for are tank tops and breathable short sleeved shirts.

2. Light Layering
Sometimes it’s not just our bellies that grow during pregnancy–it’s also our boobs, our butts and our hips. Adding an additional layer is great to give you a little extra coverage, but layering can be difficult with the rising heat. I’ve including some items that I think will add some much desired coverage but also keep you cool. And you can always re-wear these post-bump!

3. Shorts
Sometimes it’s just too hot to wear leggings or jeans, especially when you’re outside in the summer heat. Getting two cute pairs of maternity shorts will see you through the whole summer. A definite summer maternity capsule wardrobe must-have. And they will seriously make you the happiest preggo mama ever!

4. Flip-flops
Shoes are a favorite since (hopefully) you should be able to fit in your shoes before and after pregnancy. It’s common for women’s feet to swell during their pregnancy–especially at the end–so, in the summer, flip flops will be your best friend. They have plenty of room if your feet grow a bit and they are always comfortable. If you’re needing extra comfort, be sure to get a sturdy pair with cushioning. Here are some options that are casual and fancy!

5. Flats
Sometimes flip flops just won’t do depending on what you’re doing and where you are going. I’m all about a good heel, but flats are definitely the way to go since you don’t want to cause additional strain on your feet and legs. I’ve selected several options that will work for every situation; from work to church to shopping at the mall and more. These flats are perfect!

6. Leggings
Seriously, no mom should live without a great pair of leggings. You want to get a good pair that offers stability and a good amount of stretch for your growing bump. (Maternity leggings are honestly the best things ever and awesome for postpartum too.)
Maternity leggings aren’t just for lounging around at home or for workouts, you can dress them up too! There’s so many cute looks you can pull together with leggings. I recommend getting two or three pairs of your favorites. Here are some options below!

7. Jeans
Jeans are a everyone’s closet since they are a comfortable and easy option. Something to remember is that you won’t be wearing your maternity jeans for long so if you can, try to avoid spending too much on this item, but that being said, if you find a pair of maternity jeans that fit perfectly that you love, go for it! The majority of maternity jeans and pants have enough growing room so they will last you throughout your pregnancy, making them well worth the money. And if they are a pretty penny, you can always reuse them if you decided to get pregnant again!

Skirts are such a fun and easy option that can dress up any outfit. They also look great with a bump. You only really need one basic skirt in your capsule wardrobe, but could also get a fun pattern, too!

9. A Bathing Suit
There is nothing better than taking a dip in the pool during the summertime when you’re pregnant. Not only does is relax tightened muscles, it also lifts the baby’s weight off of your already aching hips, legs, shoulders and belly. So nice! This is why having a swimsuit is a must. A good suit should last you the entire pregnancy, so get a suit that has a decent amount of coverage for all parts (bottom and breasts especially!) and sport that gorgeous bump of yours! 10. Summer Dresses
Breezy dresses are prefect for summer and are a true maternity capsule wardrobe must-have. The empire waist (or no waistline) gives your growing bump the freedom it needs. Dresses are great because they are right for every occasion. I would recommend picking out four options that have different patterns, colors and fabrics.
I’ve included some cute short summer dresses that are great for every occasion, then some maxi dresses, a few options for you to wear at a bridal shower or baby shower or even a wedding (it is wedding season after all!), and then some stripe options that I love.

Creating A Pregnancy Capsule Wardrobe
If you are in the early stages of pregnancy (or plan to be soon), you’re likely wondering how your wardrobe will change, and what outfits you can wear to rock your baby belly. We are here to help!
A maternity or pregnancy capsule wardrobe will make getting dressed a breeze, even as your body is changing. And you’ll be able to put together stylish outfits no matter what season you’re in.
Read on to learn all about maternity capsule wardrobes and how you can create one that works for your lifestyle.
@hatchgal
What is a maternity capsule wardrobe?
A maternity capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing used specifically during the pregnancy season to accommodate your growing belly. During the early months of pregnancy you can often get away with your normal clothes. But as your body changes and your belly grows you’ll need to add special maternity clothing that is both practical and comfortable.
Being a mom of two myself, I have been around the pregnancy block a couple of times, and for both of those seasons I have used a maternity wardrobe capsule.
@jessie_bush
What month do you start wearing maternity clothes?
While every woman is different (as well as the way her baby bump grows), as a general rule, it will be time to start wearing maternity clothes by the second trimester (around month 4-5).
For the first pregnancy it’s common to not really “show” until you are in the second trimester. So you might find you can wear all of the same clothing until then. In subsequent pregnancies however, woman often find they “pop” sooner and need to switch over to maternity jeans even in the first trimester (I definitely did!).

How do you build a maternity wardrobe?
Building a maternity capsule wardrobe is actually quite effortless. If you are feeling at all overwhelmed (as pregnancy in itself can often make you feel), follow these steps:
1. Figure out in what seasons you’ll be 4-9 months pregnant. This is when you will need to be in maternity-specific clothing.
2. Shop your closet. Pull out any pieces of clothing that can serve double-duty because they are oversized, flowy, or stretchy enough to accommodate a growing belly. You can include non-maternity clothes in your maternity capsule so long as wearing them will not wreck the clothing. Oversized sweaters or shirts, flowy dresses, or button-up shirts work great.
3. Go through the Maternity Capsule Checklist, and check off any items you can use from your current wardrobe. You’ll find the checklist at the end of the post.
4. Purchase or borrow any remaining items you need. This is a great idea if you are on a budget. I had a few friends who I swapped clothes with during our pregnancy seasons. Things like maternity jeans, shirts, and body-con dresses.

The graphic above can serve as inspiration for a versatile maternity capsule for summer or spring. With just a small selection of clothes you can create many outfit combinations. Read on to learn about each item and keep these points in mind:
- Comfort is key when it comes to maternity outfits. Your body is changing and stretching so much you’ll find being pregnant in itself can have varying levels of discomfort so that last thing you’ll need is clothes that add to that!
- For summer think airy, light, breathable, and stretchy. When you are pregnant and it’s hot outside, you’ll be thankful for comfortable breezy clothing. Dresses and light layers are a great choice.
Oversized Button-Up Shirt
This is a perfect layering item in the spring and summer. It is long enough to cover your bum if wearing a pair of leggings, and looks great over a tank top. You can also wear an oversized button-up with jeans, smocked pants, or shorts in the summer. Or wear it tied around the top of your bump over a dress in the summer!

Long (or Short) Sleeve Maternity Tops
A couple of maternity tops go a long way in the spring and summer. Wear them with jeans, leggings, or smocked pants. Or, go with a pair of shorts if you prefer. Opt for neutral solid colors or neutral stripes for versatility.

Slip Dress
A comfortable, breathable, airy dress that has a more dressed up feel is a slip dress. This is a great choice for a pregnancy capsule wardrobe as it can be worn with heels for an evening out, or with sneakers for a laid back look. Throw a denim jacket over top and let your cute bump peak out!

Bodycon Dresses
Bodycon dress styles are perfect for pregancy as they are stretchy and hug your body in all the right ways. They are the perfect “bump showcase” dress and one or two are a great addition to a maternity wardrobe capsule. We suggest neutral colors, but stripes are cute as well as a pop of color like pink or blue.

Flowy Dress
If you will be attending a summer wedding, or have a few special dates planned, a flowy floral dress is the perfect summer maternity capsule wardrobe addition. You can also wear a pretty floral dress with sneakers for a casual mom outfit.
A dress with a loose, tier style or smocked fit works best as they provide ample room for your growing chest and baby bump. If you are not buying a maternity-specific dress, it’s best to size-up one size than your usual.

Every maternity capsule wardrobe needs a great pair of maternity jeans that have elastic on the sides or an over-the-belly elastic waistband. Jeans are incredibly versatile and stylish, creating a ton of cute outfit combinations for pregnancy.

7 things for expectant mothers to look like a beauty, not a bun
It is during these nine months that it is especially important to feel comfortable and catch both curious and admiring glances. Fashion stylist Elena Druzhkova helped us figure out what a young mother must have in her wardrobe to make pregnancy easy and joyful.
Just because you’re in an interesting position doesn’t mean your wardrobe is destined to be boring, it can and should be «interesting. » At the same time, it is not necessary to immediately spend extra money on buying new clothes, for starters, you should look into your closet — there are probably oversized basic items, for example: a dress, jacket, cardigan or sweater. Suitable clothes for pregnant women can be easily bought in a regular women’s store.
Jacket or blazer
When choosing a jacket and blazer, opt for an elongated model. In the first months of pregnancy, these things will perfectly help to hide a small tummy. In later pregnancy, they should be worn unbuttoned, this will visually make you slimmer.
Wrap Coat
Comfortable yet stylish, this coat is a great investment in your current and future wardrobe as it is versatile and will last you through and after your pregnancy.
Oversized sweaters, cardigans, dresses
Choose loose fit during pregnancy. After the baby is born, these things will come in handy: they will look very stylish when worn with narrower bottoms and / or tied with a belt.
Shirts, T-shirts, tops and T-shirts with buttons
Such clothes are well suited not only for pregnant women, but also for nursing mothers.
Shoes
Flat shoes are now in fashion, so we confidently wear sneakers, sneakers, mules, loafers, ankle boots. It is fortunate that all this can be easily used, while being in an interesting position and “in trend”.
Accessories
Accessories complete the look and bring it together. Do not focus on the stomach, but emphasize the beautiful curve of the neck, full shoulders, charming necks that appear in all women in an interesting position. This role can be played by any headdress, scarf, scarf, watch, gloves, bag, hairpin or glasses. The most important thing is to like yourself!
Special items for pregnant and lactating women
Many stores have a special line for pregnant women Maternity, where you should pay attention to the following:
- trousers or jeans with tummy insert
- maternity tights designed to support a growing belly with a special insert that stretches as it grows without squeezing it.
- special undershirts, tops and nursing bras. They are very comfortable, especially in the first six months, when many mothers experience discomfort when feeding a baby.
Capsule
As an example, a small capsule of basic things for a future mother — a basic wardrobe.
This is a kind of constructor, where things fit together perfectly. The basic wardrobe is a simple cut of things, quality and, as a rule, it is out of trend! Do not forget that the basic wardrobe can and should be colored, it can contain different prints and textures. Such things will be perfectly combined with each other, as well as with more complex accessories. Of course, it will change depending on personal preferences, on the climate in which we live, on the places in which we appear …
It is important to always have in your arsenal such a capsule of universal things that combine with each other, giving you the opportunity to invent and create various interesting images. And remember that the base is the basis of any wardrobe for all women.

Pregnancy and postpartum capsule wardrobe
Every woman wants to be beautiful no matter the circumstances. And during pregnancy, this need does not disappear anywhere, and sometimes comes to the fore. The expectant mother wants to look good, be attractive and smart. Properly selected clothes will help to emphasize beauty and femininity.
Few people want to spend money on a large amount of clothes, but during pregnancy, the need to replenish the wardrobe sometimes comes to the fore. And here comes to the rescue capsule wardrobe, because it allows you to get by with a minimum of clothes, and always look different. And if these clothes are universal — both for pregnancy and for feeding, then it will be possible to use such a wardrobe for the next few years. Isn’t that wonderful?
Capsule wardrobe for pregnant women — what is it?
The easiest way to always dress well is to create a capsule wardrobe. It is beautiful in that every piece of clothing in it is combined with the rest, and you do not need to rack your brains over what can and cannot be worn with what.
A capsule is a set of things that fit together and are united by one style. Usually, the capsule includes 6-12 things that can be combined with each other to create different looks with a minimum of things. As a rule, all these images are united by one theme: for celebrations, or for work, for walking, for sports, for every day. A capsule wardrobe contains one or more capsules, such a wardrobe is also called functional or «smart».
Just think, from 12 well-chosen items of clothing, you can make at least 40 images! And if you connect shoes and accessories, then it will always be easy to look stylish and tasteful. You won’t have to spend time choosing clothes for a particular exit, if it’s not enough. And at the same time there is an opportunity for a flight of fancy, if you want to experiment with your image. And all this — inside the capsule wardrobe.
How to start building a capsule wardrobe?
To begin with, you should decide where you plan to go in this wardrobe. So, you can make a capsule for everyday use, for visiting work, if you plan to go there during pregnancy and after childbirth. For walks, you need a separate capsule, which can also be “for sports”, because after the baby starts walking, your joint walks will turn into a marathon “mom, guess where I’ll run now and catch up”, and therefore things for walking should be convenient, practical, comfortable (and this is what sportswear is usually made of). It is better to think in advance what you will need and immediately include it in your wardrobe.
So, let’s proceed directly to compiling a capsule wardrobe for a pregnant woman (and subsequently a nursing mother) using the example of a basic capsule.
How many things do you need for one capsule?
The best place to start your capsule wardrobe is with a basic capsule. This is a set of things that are versatile and can subsequently be combined with clothes and accessories of almost any style. Basic things are suitable for any situation and are practically not subject to fashion influences. By adding fashionable elements to such a capsule in each particular season, you can get modern and fresh looks.
Start compiling a capsule should be with one basic thing. It can be trousers, a skirt, jeans or leggings, depending on your preference, a dress or shorts. Since we make up the basic wardrobe, this basic thing should be as neutral as possible, preferably monophonic, without decorative details. Colors — calm, classic, dark or light, you can — pastel, not catchy and not conspicuous.
Examples of the basic thing to make a basic pregnancy capsule:
The basic dress can be both long-sleeved and short-sleeved.
A cute and laconic basic dress will be combined with any shoes and outerwear buy
A slightly modest but very delicate basic dress with a stand-up collar will warm you in cool weather buy
Pants for pregnant women should be comfortable first of all. Knitted models, visually perceived as a classic, are gaining momentum among lovers of good looks, expecting a baby.
Classic maternity trousers can be the basis of your basic capsule buy
Neutral light trousers with a straight cut are also good as a basis buy
Many women prefer leggings to trousers and skirts. This is a fairly convenient option, giving its owner not only freedom of movement, but also a lot of options in composing the image due to its excellent compatibility with other things.
Gray color is considered universal, and these leggings will look great with almost any top buy
Black leggings for expectant mothers will be relevant at all times and will suit any style buy
Having found the main thing for your base capsule, you need to proceed to the selection of elements of clothing that combine with it. So, you need to pick up the top to the bottom, and you should not be limited to only one thing. Under one bottom, as a rule, three or four different tops are purchased: with a long sleeve and with a short, narrower or looser cut; you can also play with color schemes, for example, have both a light and dark option.
The long sleeve top can be both insulated and cool.
Pleasant to the body turtleneck will be a great element of the basic capsule for a pregnant woman buy
Sandy jumper, which can be completed with any outerwear, will become a light accent in the image of a future mother buy
A jumper, blouse or tunic is a great option for a top that can be varied depending on the needs of the owner of the wardrobe.
A laconic white jumper will suit any outfit in any style buy
A classic tunic in a pleasant pastel shade will go well with both tight and wide trousers buy
The top with short sleeves can be made in the form of a T-shirt or T-shirt, it all depends on the preferences of each particular pregnant woman.
Buy
A white T-shirt is versatile and will fit well into any outfit buy
So, for one main thing, we select 3 or 4 tops, designed for different temperature conditions. Depending on the season, we add outerwear according to the season. The next step is choosing shoes. It is important that the shoes look harmonious with all the elements of the capsule and are combined with each of them.
Now you can expand the base: pick up one or more bottoms to the same tops. So, if trousers were originally taken as the basis, then you can add leggings, a skirt or jeans to them. It is important that each individual bottom is combined with each individual top. And jackets or coats looked harmoniously with each image, made up of other elements. You need to combine things both in color and in lines.
In total, in a small basic capsule there can be from one to 3-4 bottoms (we also include a dress here), about twice as many tops, and half as many shoes. Outerwear should also not be much, as well as shoes.
Accessories are an important addition to any outfit
Even one scarf can completely change the look of its owner, so accessories should not be neglected. Glasses, belts, handbags, scarves, hats, scarves, hats — all this complements the image and makes it more complete, but it is very important not to overdo it. It should be remembered that accents in the image should be no more than three , otherwise it will look clumsy or even ridiculous. Completely without accents, the image will be boring, so adding at least one bright touch to your appearance is still worth it.
Particular attention should be paid to the selection of colors, and here you need to focus on both your individual preferences and your color type. What your preferences in choosing the color of clothes say, you can read in this article.
The basic capsule of the capsule wardrobe is compiled only once, then in it some things are gradually replaced by others, and all this time you are guaranteed to have what to wear at any moment.
