    The tasks of the school Olympiad in mathematics are designed for students of the 5th grade. When selecting tasks for the Olympiad, the principle was used, in which there should be tasks feasible for the majority of participants, tasks of increased difficulty (half of the participants can solve them), complex ones that require special mathematical ingenuity and skills for solving non-standard problems.

    In this article:

    It would seem that typical problems are solved in elementary school. However, fifth graders often don’t know how to do it right. This can cause school failure and reduce the child’s motivation to study. It is important to teach the child to solve problems according to the algorithm. Then he will be able to do his homework on his own and feel confident in mathematics lessons at school.

    Have you ever come across such a situation: your fifth-grader sits for an hour over a math textbook and tries in vain to solve something. Your heart cannot stand the sight of the suffering of a little martyr, you come up and say: «Well, show me that you can’t do it.» Scrolling through several pages of the notebook, you see: exactly the same problem was solved in the classroom. “Well, what is so difficult here? After all, you already solved this problem in class, ”you say. And your fifth grader will look at you in surprise and answer: “How did you decide? In class, we counted apples, but here nuts.”

    Sound familiar? If so, your child is having difficulty with common tasks.

    What are typical tasks?

    Typical tasks are called tasks, the conditions of which are built according to one algorithm. That is, the initial data, numbers may change, but the essence of the condition remains constant. Consequently, ALL tasks related to a particular type are solved according to the SAME scheme. Having mastered it, the child acquires a universal “key” to any tasks of this type.

    Why solve typical problems?

    Getting acquainted with typical tasks, practicing a single algorithm for solving them, the child learns to take steps that are called universal learning actions (ULA): the ability to set a problem, choose solutions, analyze the results, etc. Later, the child will perform these actions not only in mathematics lessons, so mastering them is extremely important. This is the purpose of solving typical problems. The process of mastering UUD is divided into 2 stages: 1) the formation of UUD; 2) application of UUD.

    Students go through the first stage in elementary school. It is at this time that the basic skills of solving problems are laid in the memory. Starting in 5th grade, the child learns to apply these skills to solve a specific problem.

    Why does a child have problems solving typical problems?

    So, in elementary school, the main UUDs have already been formed and a huge number of typical tasks have been solved. Why, then, suddenly, in the fifth grade, a student cannot always cope with seemingly familiar tasks? The reasons for difficulties with typical tasks are different:

    1. Stress. The transition from one class teacher to another, the abundance of new faces can unsettle the child, put him into a stupor. As a result, the process of educational activity becomes more difficult and, in particular, difficulties arise in solving problems in mathematics.
    2. High load. In the fifth grade there are many complex subjects, unfamiliar to the child. Learning becomes difficult, classes take a lot of energy. An overloaded brain has no choice but to block unnecessary information — for example, an algorithm for solving problems in mathematics.
    3. Insufficiently well-formed UUD . Sometimes, for one reason or another, a child simply lacks the basic tools to solve a problem. Our mission in this case is to help him fill in the gaps.
    4. Lack of practice in applying UUD. At the beginning of a new academic year, a fifth-grader is still not able to freely operate with the formed skills. He is only learning to do this, and in the process of learning, of course, he does not do without mistakes and difficulties. The task of teachers and parents is to help him learn how to apply existing skills.


    How can I help my child solve math problems in 5th grade?

    The material itself is not difficult. Parents can help the child on their own if he did not understand the material in the lesson.

    1. Peace of mind , only peace of mind! Tasks are not easy for a child — this is not a tragedy. Pass this idea on to your child. This will save him from unnecessary worries and relieve him of the paralyzing fear of the task.
    2. Determine the root of the problem to understand what kind of help the child needs. If difficulties with mathematics are associated with adaptation to a new educational life and workload, then he needs psychological support to a greater extent than additional classes. In the evening, when all tasks are solved, talk to the child. What did he remember most about the day? Is it easy to navigate the school? What subject seems to be the most interesting? Talking with a fifth grader about a new stage of school life will help you get used to the changes faster, your psychological state will improve and it will become easier to study.
    3. When the problem is with mathematics, it is necessary to understand by what kind of mistakes the child makes. If, when solving a problem, he uses the correct algorithm, but gets confused in the calculations, then mental counting exercises will help. Just do not deliberately set aside time every day for this purpose. Let the bill become a familiar companion of the child in everyday life: offer to count the change in the store, calculate the cost of groceries, measure the amount of ingredients when cooking.
    4. If the child cannot understand what algorithm is used to solve the problem, try to visualize it. You can draw a condition. For example, if a movement task is given, offer to depict the path, moving objects, the direction of movement. There are other ways to visualize such tasks: for example, take a longer ruler — it will be a road; toy cars are moving objects. Solve the problem by moving the cars along the ruler in the right direction. This will introduce an element of the game, and clearly show the algorithm for completing the task.
    5. Teach your child how to write a summary of problem . This will discard all superfluous words and leave the essence. This will help you quickly find the formula you need.
    6. Tell the child that the algorithm used is suitable for all problems of this type : try changing the numbers in the problem and show that the formula remains the same. You can also ask him to come up with a problem for this formula.
    7. Show how these tasks can be applied in everyday life . A child is much more interested in solving everyday problems than those that are simply written in a textbook.

    Practice together and you will be able to overcome school failure.

    Principles and algorithms for solving typical problems

    It is not enough to train a child to solve problems, it is important to show him the general principles. Thanks to them, he will cope with similar tasks in higher grades.

    1. We explain the importance of task . Tell the child where the problem to be solved is useful, or invite him to think for himself, ask leading questions, motivate with practical benefits. Let the child want to do the task.
    2. Compose a short note or draw a diagram .
    3. We define the algorithm for solving . It is very important that the child speaks it himself. At first, you can do it out loud, then — to yourself.
    4. We train regularly! You don’t have to do it for 45 minutes like at school. Having analyzed one problem, solve 2-3 similar ones — and the algorithm will be firmly entrenched in the child’s memory.
