Author’s profile
Rimma’s daughter Nastya decided to become a forensic expert.
After the 11th grade, she entered the Belgorod State University for the program «Forensic examinations». A year later, Nastya again applied to the same university — now for the specialty «judicial and prosecutorial activities». She receives both educations free of charge: one full-time, and the other part-time.
In the article, Rimma will tell how her daughter entered the budget twice, and will share how difficult it is to combine studies in two areas at once.
Choosing a profession
In 2020, Nastya graduated with honors from a regular secondary school in Belgorod.
I stopped controlling my daughter’s studies from the eighth grade: I knew that she was very organized, so in any case she would do all her homework. In the future, she began to make them a week in advance.
Nastya also had time for her hobbies: she danced in the hip-hop style, swam, and even received the third junior category in chess.
My daughter has a rational mind: she likes to analyze problems, compare facts, and organize information. In Nastya’s life, everything should be clearly planned.
When it was time to choose a specialty, the daughter settled on the profession of a forensic expert. She justified her decision as follows: an interesting field, a lot of research work and no need to constantly communicate with new people.
The direction of training «Forensic examination» is usually implemented on the basis of the Faculty of Law. Students spend five years at the university and become specialists. Here are the possible learning profiles:
- «Forensic expertise»;
- «Engineering and technical expertise»;
- «Expertise of substances, materials and products»;
- «Economic expertise»;
- «Speech expertise».
paragraphs 1.9 and 1.14 of the Federal State Educational Standard «Forensic Science»
Nastya and I chose the first specialization. The profile «Forensic examinations» involves the study of all the main types of examinations, therefore, it seemed to us the widest and most promising. Having received such an education, you can work in a forensic center. Its employees collect and examine evidence, understand the causes of incidents and help find criminals.
How I help my sister build an educational trajectory from the OGE to the Unified State Examination
Preparing for the Unified State Examination
To enroll in the Forensic Science program, Nastya took the Unified State Examination in History, Social Studies and Russian. Another daughter planned to write an exam in basic mathematics, but in 2020 it was not held due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In the summer before 11th grade, Nastya took online courses. Annual access to educational materials in three main subjects cost us 9000 R. The subscription did not imply feedback, so the daughter checked the exercises on her own.
Nastya continued her preparation for the exams at school. We were lucky with the teacher: the teacher of history and social studies was an expert on the Unified State Examination, that is, she participated in the assessment of the tasks that the applicants performed. With this teacher, we agreed on free classes after school.
5 unrealistic promises of online schools to prepare for the Unified State Examination
Due to the situation with the coronavirus, exam dates have been postponed several times. Being in a state of expectation, the daughter took an express course to prepare for the Unified State Examination in Russian and history. Online lessons cost 990 R. Such a low price was due to the fact that access to training materials was opened for only a couple of days.

step without exams.
To do this, Nastya needed to win the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren — it is also called Vseros — in social science.
The regional stage of the competition was held in the suburbs of Belgorod. When only 20 minutes remained before the end of the competition, it turned out that the organizers had distributed the wrong forms. Therefore, the contestants were asked to urgently transfer their works to other sheets. Probably, due to their age and inexperience, the participants of the Olympiad preferred to quickly rewrite everything, rather than defend their rights.
Nastya won the regional selection, but then we did not attach any importance to this. In order to pass to the final stage of the Social Science Olympiad, in 2020, it was necessary to score 179 points. Nastin’s result was less. I am sure that the hitch with the forms was the reason.
Order of the Ministry of Education dated April 15, 2020 No. 181
Two weeks later, the daughter found out that she had nevertheless made it to the finals of the Olympiad, but according to the quota. It is valid when none of the participants in the regional selection scores the required number of passing points. Then the organizers simply send the participant with the maximum result to the next stage.

Having received the good news, we began to pack and bought tickets to Moscow — the final stage of the Olympiad was to be held there. But at that time, the coronavirus was actively spreading, so the Ministry of Education canceled everything, and we had to stay at home.

However, this rule did not apply to Nastya, because she did not score passing points and went to the finals according to the quota.
Nevertheless, participation in the Olympiad came in handy for us. The diploma of victory in the regional stage helped my daughter get additional points when applying to the university, but I will talk about this a little later.

Choosing a university
We analyzed universities located in our Belgorod region and thought about studying in Moscow or St. Petersburg.
Many universities recruited for the “Forensic examination” direction, but the specialization “forensic examinations”, which the daughter chose, was far from being met everywhere. I’ll tell you which universities we decided to apply to.
St. Petersburg University of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. First, we looked at universities subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the Ministry of Justice. We found only this educational institution, in which there was an admission in our specialty. But I immediately thought that my daughter would not pass the medical commission, which is mandatory for all applicants of such universities.
Requirements for the health status of those entering the service in the internal affairs bodies are spelled out on one hundred pages. Source: Order of the Ministry of Internal Affairs dated April 2, 2018 No. 190
Belgorod State University — BelSU. Next, we considered civilian universities, and decided to start with those that were in our region. Forensic science was taught only at BelSU. But there were only three state-funded places, and one of them was allocated for target students, and the other for those entering under a special quota. For those who went through the general competition, there was only one place left.
We could have considered targeted training, but decided against it. Then you would have to conclude an agreement with one specific enterprise, and then work there for several years. The daughter wanted to look for internships herself, and then pass certification as an independent expert.
How my son entered into two contracts for targeted education in order to get on the budget
Realizing how risky it is to apply for one state-funded place, we began to look for universities outside our city. We decided to try to enter Moscow: there were many universities in the capital where they taught forensic examination, plus it’s convenient to travel to Belgorod from there.
Russian State University of Justice – RGUP. Here they were admitted according to the profile we needed, but he had a general competition with the direction of «Economic Expertise». The university did not guarantee that students would be able to study forensic science.
Another disadvantage of the university was the situation with state-funded places. There were only two of them: one for the target, and the other for a special quota. Theoretically, it was possible to pass on them, but only if these places remained unclaimed. We decided to try.
clause 87 of the procedure for admission to universities
Bauman Moscow State Technical University. At this university, we reviewed the Engineering and Technical Expertise program of the law school — now it is called Digital Information Expertise. In general, Nastya was interested in this direction, but not in the same way as forensic science.
We also found out that non-resident students of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University are not provided with a hostel. This became a serious disadvantage — even despite the fact that the university allocated 13 budget places for applicants according to the general competition.
Moscow State Law University named after O. E. Kutafin — Moscow State Law Academy. Two types of examinations were taught here — speech studies and economics — and within the framework of the general competition there were as many as 19 places. But Nastya was not very attracted to these areas, so we sent documents to the Moscow State Law Academy only for insurance purposes.

Analysis of options. To assess our chances of getting into different universities, we turned to last year’s admission statistics. There we looked for data on passing scores and the number of places.
Then Nastya found admission orders on the websites of universities and wrote out the scores of the applicants from there. We supplemented the resulting table with information about paid training.
A table with data on universities, which we compiled with our daughter
A year before our admission, there were 47 budget places — many times more than in other universities. And as a result, they enrolled the guys who received from 248 to 272 points for three exams.
Nastya scored 269 points, so hypothetically she could go not only there, but also to BelSU, which we considered initially. In 2019, two applicants were admitted to the budget with the results of 266 and 279 points. Just in case, we also considered paid education: BelSU would have to pay 79,600 R per year. Education in Moscow universities would cost us three times more.
After weighing all the pros and cons, we focused on entering BelSU. The rest of the options became spare for us.
Competition. By submitting documents to BelSU, we received ten additional points:
- For a certificate with honors — 3.
- For victory in the regional stage of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren in social science — 3.
- For prize-winning in the Olympia de university — 3.
- for golden TRP badge — 2.
Thanks to this, the daughter’s score increased from 269 to 279, and she was able to take a higher position in the ranking of applicants.
Those who entered under a special quota and those who signed an agreement on targeted training were enrolled by the university in the first place. Let me remind you that two such places were allocated for our direction, and one for those who went through the general competition.
“Admission is a terrible beast”: stories of parents whose children got into the budget The university transferred them to the general competition, and our chances of getting into the budget increased noticeably.
Later it became clear that all BelSU applicants who were in the ranking higher than Nastya did not plan to become forensic experts. Some of our competitors have agreed to enroll in the specialty «jurisprudence», and someone has chosen another university altogether.
As a result, the daughter calmly entered the profile «Criminal Expertise» chosen by her on the budget. In the rating of applicants, Nastya was the first, so she would have been able to get a free place anyway — even if there was only one place left.
I note that in the end, Nastya went to all the other universities where we applied, but she preferred to get an education at home. As I said above, these options were not a priority for us, and over time our decision has not changed.
Second education
Choice of specialty. My daughter decided to get a second education after talking with practicing forensic experts whom we found thanks to friends. They said that universal workers are now in demand: experts and lawyers rolled into one.
By this time, Nastya was already studying at the university. Senior students and teachers confirmed that it is desirable to have another education.
To speed up the learning process, some guys received two towers at the same time: the first in person, and the second in absentia. We also decided to do the same. Moreover, it is not prohibited by law.
item 6 part 1 art. 34 273-FZ «On Education in the Russian Federation»
We decided to enter BelSU again, but we had to first choose a specialty.
We didn’t even consider undergraduate studies. The reason is simple — in the direction of «Jurisprudence» Nastya could not get it in absentia. According to the laws, this is possible only on the basis of higher or secondary vocational education.
note to clause 1.3 of the Federal State Educational Standard of the direction of training 40.03.01 «Jurisprudence»
We only had to apply for a specialty — it did not have such restrictions. Perhaps the reason is that education of this level involves a longer preparation: not four years, but five years. In the case of the correspondence form, you need to study even longer — up to six years.
At the Faculty of Law, where my daughter studied, there was a recruitment for two areas of specialty:
- «Legal support of national security» with the profile «State-legal».
- «Judicial and prosecutorial activities» with the profile «Judicial activities».
We compared the curricula in these areas and came to the conclusion that the second option is more suitable for us. He assumed the study of forensic science and criminology, legal techniques and disciplines related to litigation and the resolution of legal disputes.
All these subjects would help Nastya deepen her knowledge of forensic science, and a second diploma of higher education would be a good line in her resume.
Receipt. There were budget places in the direction Nastya chose. We decided to try to enter them. From the point of view of the law, we have not violated anything.
In Russia, the first higher education is guaranteed free of charge and on a competitive basis. But Nastya didn’t have a university degree yet, which means she didn’t have a high school diploma either. Accordingly, she could take part in the competition for budget places.
Part 3 5, part 7, art. 60 273-FZ «On Education in the Russian Federation»
To submit documents, a certificate was needed — it was already in the university. If we were applying to another university, we would have to make a copy of this document. We also did not take exams, because the results of the USE are valid for five years — in the year when the exam was taken, and the next four years.
Part 2 70 273-FZ «On Education in the Russian Federation»
At the beginning of June 2021, BelSU published information about budget places. In the correspondence course of our chosen specialty «Judicial and Prosecutorial Activities», there were ten of them — one for a special quota and nine for a target one.
No state-funded places were allocated for those entering the general competition, but this time the same thing happened as a year ago. None of the target places were taken, so it was possible to enter them according to the general competition. Thanks to the high scores for the Unified State Examination, the daughter was again in first place in the ranking of applicants and easily passed to the budget.
clause 87 of the procedure for admission to universities
How the daughter combines full-time education with correspondence education
Transfer of subjects. Both directions that Nastya chose belong to the same enlarged group of specialties, which means that they have similar curricula, especially in the first years. Therefore, after entering the correspondence school, the daughter immediately applied for the transfer of disciplines.
BelSU has an MFC for students: they go there for any questions related to documents. Nastya was interested in the offset of the results of the training. To do this, the daughter wrote an application addressed to the rector, and then the curricula of different areas were verified at the university. As a result, we were recredited for the entire first course plus part of the disciplines for the second.
Regulations for the provision of the service for crediting completed training — the website of BelSU
Education in two specialties. In October, my daughter was transferred to the second year of the correspondence department, so she had to take the exam in November.
We did not expect this. Nastya thought that everything would be credited to her and left in the first year, so there would be no exams. She planned to combine studies in two specialties only from next year.
There was very little time left before the session, so it was hard to prepare for it. Nastya took five subjects at once: Roman, criminal and administrative law, as well as a foreign language and physical education. In addition, the daughter wrote a term paper on the discipline «Theory of State and Law» and continued to study at the full-time department.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all classes were conducted online. Then it helped us out: Nastya could attend the classes for full-time students and at the same time take the session at the correspondence.
How I entered the online master’s program in data science
It became easier to study in two directions. My daughter got the opportunity to distribute the workload in advance and write the term paper at a comfortable time, and not a month before the deadline. The most difficult period comes when you need to prepare for the session. Self-organization and love for planning help Nastya pass all her exams on time.
Thanks to this approach, the daughter has time for hobbies and various useful activities. For example, she works as a public assistant to an investigator in the Investigative Committee for the Belgorod Region — of course, on a pro bono basis. Nastya also participates in university events and writes articles for competitions. And he goes in for sports two or three times a week.
The daughter does not regret that she decided to receive two higher educations at the same time. Moreover, in senior years, she is thinking of increasing her workload and starting to earn extra money in the field of web design. Nastya learns the basics of this profession in an online course from Skillbox, which lasts two years.
The duration of the daughter’s first education is 5 years, and the second, which she began to receive a year later, is 5 years and 11 months. Let me remind you that my daughter was immediately transferred to the second year, so we will study a year less.
5 reasons why we love online courses so much
As soon as Nastya receives a diploma as a forensic expert, she will no longer be able to receive a second higher education at the expense of the state and will start studying for a fee. Now the cost of part-time education in the direction of «Judicial and prosecutorial activities» at BelSU is 47,300 R per year. It turns out that for four years of study on the budget we will save at least 189200 Р.
