Using Number Tracing Worksheets With Kids

Number tracing is an important part of the process of learning to write. Kids need a guide to teach their hands the right motions to form numbers properly. Tracing also helps kids who write illegibly to improve their handwriting.

Helping Kids Learn Numbers

Worksheets are one facet of helping kids to learn their numbers. While tracing worksheets teach kids through repetition, other activities are also important.

Learning numbers is tricky because kids have to learn the symbol and also have to learn that each symbol represents a certain amount. A strong grasp of basic numbers is essential for kids as they move into more advanced math. Below are a few other strategies to use along with worksheets to help kids with number recognition and writing.

Other Types of Writing / Number Formation

Kids don’t always need a pencil and paper to work on their writing skills. Other ways to practice:

  • Practice tracing numbers in a sand tray.
  • Go outside and write large numbers with sidewalk chalk.
  • Let kids roll out play-doh and shape the numbers.

For kids who struggle with pencil grip and fine motor skills, you can use smaller pencils to help them hold their pencils properly. They can also play with clay and LEGO bricks to help build hand strength.

Number Recognition

Number recognition is a skill that involves matching a symbol with a number name. It’s different from one-to-one correspondence, as that skill is related to value.

Some methods to help kids with number recognition:

  • Matching games
  • Hide numbers around the classroom and let kids find them.
  • Number puzzles
  • Number stamps

One-to-One Correspondence

In addition to writing and recognizing numbers, kids have to understand that numbers have values. They should be able to understand that numbers represent an amount. Activities to help with one-to-one correspondence include:

  • Use number cubes to help with counting
  • Matching numbers to amounts
  • Representing numbers with counters
  • Counting activities, like graphing the number of each color in an M&M bag

Number Writing and Beyond

These free number tracing worksheets are an integral part of teaching kids to write and recognize numbers. When used in conjunction with the other methods listed, kids will get a solid grasp of number basics. They’ll be ready to move on to more advanced math skills like addition and subtraction.
