To do this, you need to select and insert into each pair of digits the appropriate action signs and symbols of elementary functions: +, -, :, x, √, log, lg, sin, cos, tg, ctg, sec, cosec, factorial (recall that the factorial is the sign of the product of the sequence of natural numbers 1 2 3 … n = n!). An equal sign must be inserted between both pairs of digits.

For example, you are overtaken by a car with the number 71 — 15. You immediately inform your satellites: 7 9052 4 √1 = 1 5 . This is a very easy number. But the number is more complicated: 53 — 41. You can equate it using the factorial:
— (5 — 3!) = √4 — 1.
Another example: 75-33; equality from it: 7-5=log √3 3. Note that the way to get 2 using the logarithm is applied here; this technique can be used for any pair of identical digits starting from 22.
Of course, today’s student can offer to differentiate the numbers in the number, standing on both sides of the dash: the derivative of a constant value is equal to zero. However, this is forbidden by the rules of the Landau game: differentiation is an action from higher mathematics. In addition, such a trivial way of solving would deprive the game of any interest.
The skill of finding equalities is acquired rather quickly. And the inevitable question arises: can all numbers be “solved”? This question was asked by M. I. Kaganov to Academician Landau. And got the answer: «No, not all.» «Did you prove the non-existence theorem?» Kaganov asked. “No, but not all numbers are good for me,” Landau answered. “For example, number 75-65.”
Further, MI Kaganov says that he got the Kharkov physicists and mathematicians interested in the game. One of the mathematicians (whose name, unfortunately, is not reported) took the game seriously. He derived a formula for a universal solution to the problem: √N+1=secarctg√N. The essence of the formula: any natural number can be expressed in terms of a number one less, using only signs of elementary functions that do not contain digits. The formula can be applied repeatedly, until equality is obtained.
To derive this formula, you need to know that 1) tg arctg x = x Let’s make the following identical transformations: N+1 = (√ N) 2 +1 = tg 2 arctg√N+1 = 1/cos 2 arctg√N = sec 2 arctg√N. Taking the root N+1 on the left and the squared secant on the right, we get the final formula.
Note that for more than twenty years, secant and cosecant have been excluded from school trigonometry. Current schoolchildren don’t know what sec x \u003d 1 / cos x , cosec x \u003d 1 / sin x , and do without them. In Landau’s game, however, one cannot do without the secant, since its expression in terms of the cosine contains 1 in the numerator, which is forbidden by the rules of the game.
Of course, the resulting formula cannot be considered as a practical means of playing the game, since it deals a death blow to the game as such. Strictly speaking, it is necessary to introduce into the rules of the game a clause prohibiting the use of universal formulas. But their search can be considered as an independent mathematical game of a higher level of complexity.
