We have learned in the past lessons where percentages occur in everyday life. Our knowledge gained in mathematics lessons will help you in the future when solving problems in physics and chemistry. The word “percent” comes from the Latin words pro centum, which literally means “one hundred”. Interest began to be widely used in Ancient Rome, but the idea of interest arose much earlier — Babylonian usurers already knew how to find interest. And the % sign is supposed to be due to a typo. In manuscripts, pro centum was often replaced by the word “cento” (one hundred) and written in abbreviated form — cto. After this mistake, many mathematicians began to use the % sign to denote percentages. Interests were also known in India.

Interest appeared in Europe 1000 years later. They were introduced by the Belgian scientist Simon Stevin, who in 1584 first published percentage tables.
