10 Children Movies We Enjoyed in 2022 – Fandads
/ Movie Reviews / By
Victor
As a parent, we are always looking for movies that we can watch with our entire family. As much as we love watching superhero movies in our household, sometimes we want to see something that is a little different. We compiled a list of family movies that we enjoyed this year and can be something for you to watch during this holiday season.
Here they are in no particular order.
BELLE
Belle was one of those movies that I kept hearing about but never got the chance to see. Thanks to our friends at Shout! Factory we were sent a copy and this movie was beautiful.
This story will resonant with many families and the music is just amazing!
A high school student becomes a globally beloved singer after entering a fantastic virtual world. She soon embarks on an emotional and epic quest to uncover the identity of a mysterious beast who’s on the run from ruthless vigilantes.
TURNING RED
Turning Red was such a great movie about friendships, mother-daughter relationships, and puberty. Yes, this movie went there and it was refreshing to see something on the screen that has not been covered before.
Lovingly told, this movie gives us an inside look at a young girl going through changes both internally and physically.
A thirteen-year-old girl is torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited she transforms into a giant red panda.
THE BAD GUYS
What happens when you mix Ocean’s Eleven with animated animals? You get The Bad Guys! This movie is such a great caper movie and all of the voices involved are fantastic. Just the opening scene with Wolf and Snake talking in the diner reminded me of the dialogue in Reservoir Dogs.
Families will enjoy this fun movie and hopefully, we will get more adventures with these characters in the years to come. Read our full review here.
After a lifetime of legendary heists, notorious criminals Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark and Ms. Tarantula are finally caught. To avoid a prison sentence, the animal outlaws must pull off their most challenging con yet — becoming model citizens. Under the tutelage of their mentor, Professor Marmalade, the dubious gang sets out to fool the world that they’re turning good.
MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON
Who knew a movie about a talking shell would pull us in and make us feel so good after it was over. Marvel the Shell with Shoes on is such a great movie but might be a little slow for younger kids. There are some Youtube shorts that might be their speed if they can’t watch this full movie.
Read our review here along with our interview with Jenny Slate.
Marcel, a 1-inch-tall shell, lives with his grandmother, Connie, the only residents of their town after their neighbors’ sudden, mysterious disappearance. When discovered by a guest amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans and a new hope of reuniting with his long-lost family.
THE SEA BEAST
The Sea Beast is one of those Netflix movies that I wish was released in the theaters. This on an IMAX screen would have been fantastic! I really enjoyed this one. The movie has great themes about breaking traditions, finding family, and some amazing-looking monsters.
A young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, turning his life upside down as they venture into uncharted waters.
WENDELL & WILD
This movie should have a lot more hype than it did. You have Jordan Peele, who is hot right now, and Henry Selick, who directed the iconic Coraline and this movie came and went.
This movie was a great ride and the animation in it was top-notch. This could become a Halloween tradition in our household.
The two devious demon brothers Wendell and Wild have to face their arch-enemy with the help of the nun Sister Helly, who is notorious for expelling demons. However, the brothers are not only plagued by her, but also by her altar boys.
A CHRISTMAS STORY CHRISTMAS
Every now and then a sequel/prequel comes out for a movie and you think to yourself, “Do we really need this?” In the case of A Christmas Story Christmas, the answer is yes.
There are a lot of feel-good moments in this and some moments that hit you in the feels. This is definitely a great follow-up and a great movie to watch together with your family.
Read our review and interview with Peter Billingsley
Ralphie returns to give his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had as a child. Long-awaited follow-up to holiday classic A Christmas Story starring Peter Billingsley.
BLUE’S BIG CITY ADVENTURE
If you are a fan of any version of Blue’s Clues then you will love this movie. From the singing to the dancing this movie has it all. Not only do you have great cameos from some of Broadway’s best but you get all 3 hosts from Blue’s Clues in one movie.
It seems that a common theme in a lot of children’s movies is to believe in yourself and this one enforces that theme too. Read our full review here and watch our interviews with the stars of the movie here and the director here.
Josh and Blue travel to New York City to attend an audition, hoping to star in a major Broadway musical while being a part of the cast.
PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH
Puss In Boots; The Last Wish is another one of those sequels that we did not know we needed. This movie looks great and the story about living your life is one that will be relative to anyone.
Read our full review to see why this made the list.
Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll: he has burnt through eight of his nine lives. Puss sets out on an epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.
MY FATHER”S DRAGON
I will not say much about this movie but I want more people to see it and talk about it. Yes, there will be some laughing and some crying while watching this movie. If your children have read the books they will enjoy this movie a lot.
Elmer, who is having trouble adjusting to his new life, decides to set out to find a wild island and rescue a young dragon. His adventures will lead him to encounter ferocious beasts, discover a mysterious place and make a new friendship.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
LIGHTYEAR – This story about the Buzz Lightyear character was an interesting take.
STRANGE WORLD – This movie fell flat in the theaters but it was a fun adventure nonetheless.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 – So many easter eggs and where are we going to go next?
MINIONS: RISE OF GRU – It is always fun to see the adventures of Gru and his minions.
LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE – A great movie about believing in yourself and those around you.

Best horror movies of 2023: top 26 new horror movies
There are quite a few interesting horror movies coming out in 2022. I recall the prequel «Child of Darkness: The First Victim», the apartment horror «The Barbarian», the anxiously paranoid «Observer», the psychological «Smile», the Texas bloody horrors of unfulfilled hopes «X» and «Pearl» by Ty West, the creepy Mexican «Witch: Reincarnation» , but the depressing reincarnation of Jeepers Creepers: Reborn did not remain forgotten either. It’s good to see that directors are now more relaxed about the formulas and conventions of the horror genre, freely flirting with tradition, discovering new techniques, plunging smartly into retro style and continuing to invent new scary stories and disturbing narratives. 2023 promises and already shows many interesting genre projects for horror fans: from dark interpretations of classic children’s fairy tales, avant-garde indie horror films, to reboots of hit franchises of the 70s and new versions of beloved horror films of the 00s.
The editors of Kanobu have compiled a list of the most anticipated scary movies that will or will premiere in 2023. We will update this article from time to time, so be sure to save and check this page for the best horrors of 2023!
Skinamarink
World Premiere : February 2, 2023
Director : Kyle Edward Ball
Where to watch? Shudder
In February, an indie horror came out on streaming Shudder and immediately became a sensation, replicated in social networks, albeit loved by a few. This movie does not use the composition familiar to horror lovers: the whole film consists of gritty deserted plans and liminal spaces of one locked house. The camera is fixed under the roof, near the walls, looks into the void, hides in children’s toys, lies idle on the floor and captures the blue darkness of the night, while the microphone records rustles and quiet sounds that envelop the viewer with a long-forgotten experience of children’s fear of the dark.
Two children were left alone at night: their father disappeared, and all the windows and lights from the house were gone. They decided to turn on the TV and stare at the screen. We hardly see children, but occasionally we hear their whispers. Almost nothing happens in this movie, but, perhaps, its artistic value is manifested here: long static shots catch the eye, the texture of the frame motivates the experience of horror. This strange, uncharacteristic emptiness, solitude produces a vague memory of childhood, when on a sleepless night every corner of the room seemed like a refuge for monsters.

Infinity pool
World premiere: January 27, 2023
Director: Brandon Cronenberg
90 002 Where to look? Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video
Horror queen Mia Goth, after phenomenal roles in «X» and «Pearl», returned to the screen in Brandon Cronenberg’s fantasy film. Writer James (Alexander Skarsgård) and a rich girl (Cleopatra Coleman) arrive at a luxury hotel on a fictional island and meet an intriguing resident (Mia Goth) there, who invites the heroes to take a ride with her and her boyfriend to a secluded beach. But on the way back, on a dark night, James knocks down a man, and he is faced with a choice: serve time or pay a decent amount of money to watch his clone being killed by the jailers. Choosing the second option, James falls into ecstasy at the sight of his own death, and the heroine of Mia Goth opens the door for him to a closed society of hedonists who enjoy the spectacle of death.
This movie is difficult to describe in two sentences — in a couple of decades, «Endless Pool» will be considered a textbook horror and an unquestioning classic of the genre. The younger Cronenberg managed to combine avant-garde and political thought, surrealism and the expression of body horror in his cinema, and cameraman Karim Hussain offered virtuoso aesthetic solutions when building space and psychedelic experience. A talented film crew, Tim Hecker’s hypnotic soundtrack and an all-star cast did everything to make the film surprise scene after scene.

Knock at the Cabin
World Premiere : February 3, 2023
Director : M. Night Shyamalan 900 03
Where to look? Peacock
M. Night Shyamalan made an apocalyptic horror film in his own way: skeptics and religious fanatics were locked together in a philosophical film-text about the death of humanity, time and religion. The story begins with a little girl, Wen, meeting Leonard (Dave Bautista) on the lawn near her parents’ summer home. Leonard asks the girl for forgiveness for what will soon happen to her and her family, and then his associates come out of the forest with axes and weapons. Leonard once had a vision of the approaching end of the world, the same dreams in a dream and in reality came to several more people. They learned about each other and decided to follow the mysterious signs to prevent the apocalypse — intuition led them to a hut in the forest, one of the inhabitants of which will have to die in order to save humanity and the planet from death.
This movie is distinguished not only by an almost theatrical production (everything takes place in one small space), conciseness of the plot and a burst of suspense, but also by Dave Batista’s amazing emancipation on the screen. The former wrestler proved to be an actor of great talent. His outward inconsistency with the image of a teacher who believed in the end of the world, smooth restraint and stateliness add to the action the necessary dose of drama, energy and internal conflict. Cast also graced the participation of Rupert Grint, who played a nervous and anxious suicidal.
M3GAN
World Premiere : January 6, 2023
Director : Gerard Johnstone
Where to watch? Peacock
Jema makes advanced toys for kids. Together with the development team, she plans to release a unique anthropomorphic doll with artificial intelligence capable of learning on the go, an impenetrable titanium body and human-like skin. But the high cost of development prevents her from enlisting the support of her superiors. After her sister’s death, Caddy’s niece moves in with Gemma, and the developer decides to test her innovative creation on her. She assigns a smart M3GAN doll to Caddy as a nanny and best friend so that she herself does not worry too much about her upbringing and entertainment. But the girl becomes unhealthy attached to the robotic creature, and the doll turns on an enhanced hyper-custodial mode. Looking at people, the doll gradually turns into a vengeful Terminator, who does not know moral protocols, and turns the life of her best friend and Jema into a sci-fi violent techno-horror.
After the success at the box office, the second part of the film «M3gun 2.0» was sent to development, the premiere of which is scheduled for 2025. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey
: Rhys Freik-Waterfield
This slasher is already too weird to miss. Famous characters from Alan Milne’s story come to life here as cruel sadists. Once upon a time, Christopher Robin left his friends, Winnie and Pyatak, alone in the forest. For many years they wandered alone, in cold winters they did not have enough food, so they had to eat Eeyore himself, which corrupted and deformed their consciousness. When Winnie the Pooh and Pyatak went completely wild, Christopher, who had matured, appeared on their horizon, who even more inflamed rage in their hearts. An anthropomorphic bear and pig went hunting and began a brutal series of violence and murder.

Children of the Corn
World Premiere : March 16 (theater), March 21 (digital)
Director : Kurt Wimmer
9000 2 Where to look? Shudder
The film was first shown in 2020 in Florida, but only recently it was released in wide American cinemas, on March 16 in Russian box office, and on March 21 on Shudder streaming. This movie is based on the book of the same name by Stephen King and echoes the original movie.84 years old — not the most skillful television-quality horror craft, but definitely worth a look. In a small town in Nebraska used to live peacefully, but the city’s economy is declining, so the residents decide to cut a loss-making cornfield. Suddenly, the destruction of the crop leads to the irrational cruelty of children: they organize a massacre, causing pain and suffering to adults. Such a terrible metaphor for children’s protest and rebellion against adults who, by their actions, destroy the hopes of children for prosperity — they cut out all the corn sprouts.
Scream 6 / Scream VI
World Premiere : March 10, 2023
Director : Matthew Bettinelli, Tyler Gillett 9000 3
Continuation of last year’s sensational hit «Scream» with another queen of horror — Jenna Ortega («X», «Vensdi» / «Wednesday») in the title role. A year has passed since the massacre in the fictional suburb of Woodsboro. The Carpenter sisters moved to New York to start life from scratch. But last year’s survivors are starting to get threatened again: Ghostface is in town and already sharpening his death tools.
The sixth part has become a resilient continuation of the bloody youth slasher, once again fingering the key segments of the subgenre. True, in this part you will not meet Neve Campbell — the performer of the role of Sidney Prescott, the actress was not satisfied with the fee. But the absence of an actress does not reduce this movie to unnecessary mediocrity: fans of the slasher will be able to see the sea of blood and cruelty, and connoisseurs of grotesque suspense will also have something to worry about. Cinema in the spirit of the entire franchise exaggerates the formula of the genre, periodically switches to meta-language and sometimes laughs at itself to its fullest.

The Pope’s Exorcist
World Premiere: April 14, 2023
Director: Julius Avery 9 0003
Exorcism mystical horror after the release of William Friedkin’s The Exorcist in 1973 became a mandatory part of the annual horror program. Children become infected with demons, and a hero or heroine rushes to their aid, embodying several roles at once: detective-priest-lawyer. This time the priest was Russell Crowe, who embodied on the screen a real historical character — Father Gabriel Amort, a priest who performed more than one hundred thousand exorcism rituals in his entire life. But this time, the archetypal horror character is concerned not only with the diabolical violence against the human body and soul, but with a detective investigation of the centuries-old conspiracy of the Vatican, the curse of the religious community.

Renfield
World Premiere : April 14, 2023
Director : Chris McKay
We mentioned this film is in the selection of the main comedies of 2023. This movie plans to balance on the borderline between comedy and trashy horror. Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) is tired of the monotony of his life, he is tired of working for Count Dracula (Nicolas Cage). He lives in the hope of better prospects, but he still fails to change his life. Finally, Renfield found a good reason to leave: he fell in love with highway cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina). The girl betrayed him the strength to quit his unloved job, but the great Dracula is unlikely to come to terms with such a betrayal. It may not be the most obligatory horror of the year among all the new ones, but the films with Nicolas Cage have long turned into a separate genre with their own playful energy. For fans of Cage, there is another good news, around 2023, a horror movie with his participation will be released: Sympathy for Devil.
Beau Is Afraid
World Premiere: April 21, 2023
2 In the Russian box office from May 4!
Ari Astaire — screenwriter and director, author of the horror films «Reincarnation» and «Solstice». He was able to correct the rules of the horror field by turning to the creation of elevated horror (elevated horror). Astaire simultaneously relies on the classics, revives little-known cinema, for example, films in the folk-horror genre, but weaves complex dramatic lines into the construction of horror, aestheticizes audio-visual material with the help of ornamentalism, symbolism and complex sound solutions. But, as he himself repeatedly noted in his interviews, his horrors primarily reflect on the topics of traumatic family relationships, the search for a home and intimacy. Bo’s All Fears also revolves around family fears, living somewhere on the borderline between horror and surreal comedy. The traumatized protagonist (Joaquin Phoenix) is used to living as a recluse, afraid of meeting the environment. But when his domineering and cruel mother dies, he has to open the door and go to his hometown, but the path is filled with frightening surprises.

Director : Tim Story
impatiently goes on a weekend to a luxurious house in the middle of the forest. Suddenly, one of them is kidnapped, and in order to save their buddy, the friends must play a twisted game with a sadistic killer. This horror comedy makes fun of several tropes from slasher films, the characters will sneer at the current circumstances, remember all the racist horror films about maniacs and murderers they once watched in order to understand how they can survive and get out. But obviously knowledge of the history of horror cinema is unlikely to help them, but the audience will be able to deliver a lot of pleasure.
Haunted Mansion
World Premiere : July 26, 2023
Director : Justin Simien
9 0002 In 2003, the fantasy-horror «Haunted Mansion» was released with Eddie Murphy in main role. In 2010, Guillermo del Toro took on the reboot of the project, but the film fell into production hell, changing several directors and screenwriters, until young director Justin Simien, who has been waiting for a response from the studio for over a year (from 2020 to 2021), and a screenwriter Katty Diepold (who directed a not so good femme reimagining of Ghostbusters in 2016). This horror attraction does not pretend to create genuine horror and fear, the concept of the film gravitates towards a nostalgic recall of all the horror classics about haunted houses, children’s horror stories and the cult object of Disneyland amusement parks — haunted houses. New Orleans. A single mother moves with her son to a mansion bought almost for nothing, but quickly realize that their new home is haunted.

The Strangers

Director : Renny Harlin 2023 may be very unsettling, but reimagining a classic and rolling a familiar story over new cinematic rails can give new sensations. While the 2008 remake of The Strangers doesn’t seem to have been that long, one hopes for a strong alternative to the original. Studio Liongate has taken up the revision of the film in order to create a full-fledged trilogy. After the success of The Barbarian, the AirBnB apartment failure will be a frequent theme in the horror movies of the future: the 2023 version of The Strangers also draws on this scenario trope. A young couple in love in search of a new life set off to travel around the country, but the journey forced the heroes to make a stop in Oregon and rent housing for the night. The stop turned into a fatal mistake — the heroes were attacked by a group of cruel strangers in masks.
