To use different page numbers or page formats in different sections, you can create page breaks and set page numbers for each one.

Below is an introduction with lowercase Roman numerals. Any other format can be used instead.

  1. Select the introduction or body text of the document and click Layout > Breaks > Next Page .

Tip: To see section breaks and other formatting marks, click the Home tab and click the Show or Hide button (¶) to turn on the display of formatting marks.

  2. In the header of the body text section, disable the option As in the previous section . If option As in previous section is grayed out, verify that a section break has been created.

  3. org/ListItem»>

In the introduction section, click the button Page number and select the location and style. If the changes affect only the first page of the section, make sure that the element Custom header for the first page is not selected.

  4. Select Page number > Page number format to select the format or set the start number.

  5. Do one or both of the following:

    • In the Number Format field, select a numbering format, such as «a, b, c» or «i, ii, iii» for introduction.

    • In section Pagination , set radio button Start at and enter the number to start numbering in the section. For example, you can start a new numbering at the beginning of a body text section.

  6. To exit, click Close the header and footer window or double-click anywhere outside the header and footer area.

Word pagination from page 3

Word pagination from page 3 — step by step instructions

Table of contents

    • Step 1: number the entire document
    • Step 2: number the document from page 3
    • Documentation in Word came up with a lot of ways . Some of them seem complicated, so try the methods below.

Step 1: Number the Entire Document

Number the entire file first. To do this, go to the «Insert» tab, to the right, click «Page Number» and select the location and style of the numbers. For example, «Bottom of the page», «Simple number 2».

Then on the right click on the Close Header Window button.

Step 2: number the document from page 3

      1. Leave the cursor at the end of the 1st sheet.
      2. Click the Layout, Breaks, and Next Page section.
      3. Follow the same algorithm on the 2nd sheet.
      4. After that, go to the beginning of the document, put the cursor anywhere and in the upper field, click the tab «Insert», «Page number» and «Number format …».
      5. In the window that opens, under the «Page numbering» item, click «start from 0» and «OK».
      6. Do the same on the 2nd sheet.
      7. Now the numbering starts from the 3rd page, and the first two are marked with zero. To hide «0», double click on it. In the opened tab «Working with headers and footers» click «Special header for the first page».
      8. Click «Close Header Window»
      9. Do the same on the next sheet.

Done, the numbering in your document starts from the third sheet.

If you want to number the file from the first page, but show numbers from the third

First number the entire document as shown in step 1. Then:

      1. Leave the cursor at the end of the 1st sheet.
      2. Go to Layout, Breaks, and Next Page.
      3. Follow the same algorithm on the 2nd sheet.
      4. Position the cursor on the first page of the document. Then, on the Layout tab, click the small button to the right of the words Page Setup.
      5. In the window that opens, select the «Paper Source» tab, click on the item «Distinguish first page headers and footers» and «OK». This action will hide the numbering on the first sheet
      6. To hide it on the second sheet, double click on «2». In the opened tab «Working with headers and footers» click «Special header for the first page».

In the same situation, you can act differently by “painting over” unnecessary elements. To hide the numbering of the first two sheets, on each of them do the following:

      1. Leave the cursor on the title, in the «Insert» tab, click the «Shapes» section and use the «Rectangle» element.
