Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Allyson
Allyson is a spelling variant of Alison. Alison was a very common name in the Middle Ages, derived from “Alice” and particular to the Norman French who brought it to England. The name persisted until the 16th century when it eventually fell from favor in England but maintained status in Scotland, giving it a particular Scottish flavor. Even though Alison was derived from Alice, Alice in turn comes from a reduced spelling variant of the Germanic “Adalheidis” (Adelaide) meaning noble (adal) kind (heid). So the root of Allyson means “nobility” and the origins span across many countries and languages. Following the enduring popularity of Alison (which was once again revived in the 20th century), many name variations began to emerge including Allison, Allyson, Alyson, Alisson and Allisson. Most of the spelling mutations are distinct to the United States.

It is a feminine given name used in different countries. It is a form of the Middle French female name “Alis” (Old French and Norman French: Aalis and Aliz).
