How to help a child learn the multiplication table — ways, tips, exercises
The multiplication table is the basis of mathematics, these are not boring columns with numbers, but a great opportunity to remember the main laws of mathematical operations for a lifetime. Of course, the vast majority of adults use a calculator, sometimes even for the simplest tasks, but it is very important to learn the multiplication table at an early age, and with it the basic laws that the science of mathematics lives on. We will talk about ways and life hacks that will help you get away from boring cramming and quickly master the multiplication table.
How to quickly learn the multiplication table
There are several rules that will help you quickly master the operation of multiplication:
Explain to your child the meaning of multiplication
The easiest way to do this is with a piece of paper in a box — draw a rectangle on it with sides that will correspond to the multiplied numbers , for example, if you need to multiply 2 by 6, then it will be a rectangle of six cells horizontally and two cells vertically. Color in the cells inside the rectangle and count them with the baby — there will be 12 cells in the figure, which corresponds to the example from the multiplication table: 2 x 6 \u003d 12.
Find patterns in the multiplication table
These patterns make learning much easier. Here are the main patterns that you should pay attention to the baby:

If you multiply by 1, the number remains the same as it was.

To multiply by 2, you can simply add to the number you are multiplying, its own. For example, to multiply 4 by 2, you need to add four to four: 4 x 2 \u003d 4 + 4 \u003d 8.

If you multiply by 5, the result will always end in 5 or 0.

To multiply any even number by 5, you can take half of that number and add 0 to it. For example, to multiply 8 by 5, you can take half of 8 (that would be 4) and add 0 to it. You get 40, which really corresponds to the example from the multiplication table 8 x 5 \u003d 40.

If you multiply by 9, the sum of the digits in the result is necessarily 9. For example, 3 x 9 = 27 (2 + 7 = 9).

When multiplying by 10, simply add 0 to the right of the number you are multiplying.
The product does not change from changing the places of factors
This multiplication law greatly simplifies life and makes the multiplication table that needs to be learned half as small. Explain to the child that it doesn’t matter if he multiplies, for example, 2 by 3 or 3 by 2, the result in both cases will be the same, 6. And it turns out that you don’t need to memorize both examples, just remember that if the factors are 2 and 3, no matter in what order, the product will be 6.
Techniques that help memorize the multiplication table
There are many ways to make it easier to memorize the table. The most important thing is that the child understands the pattern of multiplying numbers. Your task is to explain this pattern to him and visually show it.
Pythagorean table
Almost on every cover of a squared notebook you can find a multiplication table: either in the form of traditional columns of examples, or in the form of a Pythagorean table. In endless columns, children usually get lost — there are too many examples there. The Pythagorean table is another matter: it may not be clear to the baby only at first glance, but it is very easy to master it, and it is extremely convenient to use it.
In fact, the Pythagorean table is still the same multiplication table, in which the multipliers are located on the sides of the square: the first multiplier is horizontal, and the second is vertical. Draw a line from each factor to the center of the square and at the point of intersection of these lines there will be a number — the product of two factors. Since the product does not change from a permutation of the factors, you can safely swap the factors — the intersection point will be in another part of the square, but the number at this point will be the same.
It will be easier to memorize the Pythagorean table if you hang it in the child’s room — a colorful poster with such a table can be bought at an office supply store or printed out by yourself.
Visual materials and board games
A variety of additional materials — cards, bingo, dice, counting sticks — help turn the presentation of information into an exciting game. So the child will learn it much better than with the help of exhausting cramming.
You can make your own multiplication table cards by cutting a sheet of cardboard into 100 squares. On one side of each of the cards you need to write an example from the table (2 x 1, 2 x 2, 2 x 3, and so on), and on the other side — the answer to this example. The cards are turned upside down with examples, shuffled and taken out at random one at a time, showing the baby who must say the answer. Then you can play the other way around: show the cards with the answer side, and the child will need to be told which numbers to multiply will give the result.
Math lotto is a more complex, but also more interesting version of the game with cards. For example, players are given cards with several multiplication examples and need to, pulling out cards with answers in turn, close all the corresponding examples with them. It is easier to buy such a lotto, but you can also make it yourself.
There are other board games, for example, math «rpg» in which you need to go through the route on the map, throwing a die and solving examples. Or a dominotype lotto, where oblong cards are divided into two parts, an example is written on one of the parts, and an answer is written on the second, and a snake is laid out from the cards, selecting answers to the examples — just like from ordinary dominoes.
With the help of mathematical cubes with numbers, the multiplication table is studied by analogy with the study of words with the help of cubes with letters. Examples are added from the cubes in the set, and the child needs to make up an answer. There are also special sets, for example, the wooden «Table of Pythagoras», where cubes with examples and answers written on them must be placed in the right cells.
You can visually explain the process of multiplication using counting sticks (or toothpicks, matches). For example, to multiply 3 by 4, you need to arrange the sticks into three piles of four. Having counted all the sticks, the child will receive a result that will match the result in the multiplication table or Pythagoras.
Poems or rhyming phrases
We all remember from childhood the words from the song: «Twice two — four, this is known to everyone in the whole world.» There are several more examples in the table that sound like verses, for example, «five five — twenty five», «six six — thirty six» and so on. You can think of rhymes for other examples. Of course, you cannot memorize the entire table in this way, but for memorizing individual examples of the poem, they will be an excellent help. In addition, you can start from rhyming examples: for example, if “six six is thirtysix”, it is easy to calculate that six seven is 36 plus 6, that is 42, and six five is 36 minus 6, that is 30.
Multiplication on fingers
The multiplication table up to and including 5 is easy to master in general, but multiplication by 6, 7, 8 and 9 becomes a real problem for most children. A funny life hack that will help the kid remember the difficult part of the multiplication table — multiplication on the fingers.
To multiply by 6, 7 and 8, you need to turn your hands with your palms facing you and mentally assign each finger, starting with the little finger, a number from 6 to 10 (for convenience, you can stick small stickers with numbers on the fingers).
Suppose you need to multiply 7 by 8. To do this, connect finger 7 on one hand with finger 8 on the other, like this: . In this case, there are 5 of them:
And the fingers above the connected ones are units, but they need to be multiplied among themselves: the fingers on the left hand (there are 3 of them in this case) by the fingers of the right hand (we have 2 of them). That’s 3 x 2 = 6.

Helpful tips for parents
These few tips will help make learning the multiplication table as efficient and easy as possible

Learn a little. There is no need to set unrealistic goals “to learn the entire table in three days” — even if the child manages to memorize the examples in the shortest possible time, he will forget them just as quickly. It is much more effective to do a little, but every day. Let it take several days for each column of the table, but the child will learn it for a long time.

Go from simple to complex. You need to start with simple examples — multiplication by 1, 10, 2, 5. After that, you can move on to multiplying by 3 and 4, and then to the most difficult part of the table — multiplying by 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Use life hacks. At first glance, learning on the fingers or memorizing the multiplication table in verse may seem like frivolous methods, but this is not so. It does not matter how the child remembers the information, it is important that he remembers it for a long time and without unnecessary stress.

Repeat as often as possible. The more often the child repeats what he has memorized, the more likely he is to remember what he has learned for a long time. By the way, in order to repeat the multiplication table, it is not necessary to allocate special time — you can do it on a walk, on the way to school or kindergarten, while playing or setting the table.

Explain the use of the multiplication table. Practical, tangible benefits immediately make learning more attractive. For example, ask your child to calculate how many candies you need to take with you to the street in order to treat all five friends, if each of the friends needs to be given two candies.

Exercise without stress. In no case do not turn learning into torture, do not put pressure on the child, do not push him, scaring him with bad grades or citing classmates or friends as an example who “already learned the entire table, and you are still trampling on multiplying by 6. ” A bad mark can be corrected, but it is very difficult to return a repulsed hunt to return later.
