The Eisner Awards are prizes given for creative achievement in American comic books, and sometimes referred to in the industry as the comic industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards.

«Am I dreaming? (Pinches arm.) No, I guess I’m awake. I was surprised to learn that I won the Eisner Award, especially considering the other folks nominated. Incredible! I’m deeply honored to receive this recognition, and I hope my book will continue to be a helpful guide for budding cartoonists everywhere. Scientific cartoons, what to show to children without harm to them? / Sudo Null IT News

An explanation of the law of gravity from the cartoon «Physics for the little ones»

I have two very inquisitive sons, aged three and five. They are very fond of scientific cartoons, especially in physics and astronomy, as soon as a tablet falls into their hands, little fingers begin to quickly sort through YouTube videos in search of interesting content. And what do they find there? Since I am not only the father of two children, but also devoted a significant part of my life to teaching physics for young children, I know what teachers, as well as caring parents and kind grandmothers, show children. I will say right away that not all of this should be shown to children.

This should not be seen by a child

For several years now, laws have been adopted, the purpose of which is “to save children from the harmful effects of the Internet”, however, I believe that pseudo-educational cartoons can cause much more damage to the psyche and development of the child, in contrast to the content that he will never watch anyway.

As the brightest and most colorful example, let’s consider the cartoon «Physics for the little ones» This is a cartoon from the well-known and highly respected director Robert Saakyants. The cartoon has gained immense popularity and recognition among parents, grandmothers and even teachers. So what does he really represent?

For 45 minutes, an inquisitive hare has a dialogue with a smart robot, which, using examples, explains to him what physics is and why it is needed. Quite a good plot for a children’s cartoon, but during this time the robot makes about fifty gross mistakes and mistakes! And I don’t see the point in listing them all. But one of the statements of the robot touched my heart so much that I decided to publish this article. Namely, the fragment when the hare, already on fire with science, asks the robot:0007

— Well, maybe then I will also discover some kind of law?
Yes, you will open the same one that has already been opened, so it’s better not to risk it .

Thus, the author conveys to the minds of children that it is better not to even try to discover something of your own. This goes completely against the way the development and development of a child is seen by me and, probably, by most of the readers of this post.

That’s actually the cartoon itself. The juice itself starts at 9:06, it is better not to watch more than three minutes.

These videos are very popular, they are the first to pop up in parental search queries like: «physics cartoon for kids», my children often get to them while walking on thematic links from YouTube, and this cartoon is sometimes shown at the teacher’s school. The latter is hard to believe, but I used to hold classes every month with physics teachers from my field and ask the question, what do they show children? The answers sometimes upset me.

It is worth adding that Robert Sahakyants decided to introduce children not only to physics, but also to mathematics, astronomy, biology, etc. , these cartoons received no less popularity and came out with similar names «… for the smallest.»

Worth seeing for a child

Recommended video:

  1. Fixies
  2. Why family
  3. Why

I propose to supplement the black and white list in the comments.

Apps and links:

  1. Google Earth — In addition to allowing children to see our planet from space, the program allows you to view panoramas of the Moon and Mars from mission sites, as well as take virtual walks on their surfaces.
  2. Stellarium and its «tablet» counterparts — This application can be used not only at night with a starry sky. With special interest, children are looking for planets. Children also love the colorful models of the solar system.
  3. Posts by Zelenyikot – Simply opening a post and leaving it for a six-year-old child to get acquainted with is pointless, but if you show images and retell, your eyes will immediately light up with a craving for space travel. I have repeatedly used the materials of Vitaly Egorov in my astronomy circle.

The most important thing

The best way for a child to know the world is to touch it with his hands, so if you really want to arouse an unquenchable interest in science in your child, do experiments with him:

  1. Go with him to the science museum.
  2. Build an ordinary flashlight.
  3. Make the ping-pong ball float in the airflow from the hair dryer.
  4. Make a microscope out of a drop on glass.
  5. Assemble the unipolar motor.
  6. Craft a compass out of a magnetized needle on the water.
  7. Create your own kaleidoscope.
  8. Show the night sky and the milky way (outside the city).
  9. Show Saturn and the Moon through a telescope.
  10. Demonstrate how to build an image with a lens (magnifier).
  11. Assemble the camera obscura.
  12. Electrify the balloon and stick it to the wall.
  13. Buy an ultraviolet flashlight and turn off the lights in the room.
  14. Buy a plasma lamp and light a fluorescent lamp in the hands of a child (do not leave alone with the lamp).
  15. Buy soap bubbles.

I can list this list for a long time, different experiences are suitable for children of different ages. Feel free to find and conduct a couple of experiments that are most suitable for yours. I wish you exciting experiments!

UPD: Thanks to the commenters who drew my attention to the fact that I misunderstood the dialogue between the hare and the robot. For example, a note from demchuk13:

Same cartoon:
— … at least you will understand why the object falls from above …
“Also, how high can I throw the stone?”
And with what force it will fall on your head.
“Well, maybe then I’ll also discover some law?”
— Yes, you will open the same one that has already been opened, so it’s better not to risk it.
Consequently, the author conveys to the minds of children that it is better not to even try to throw stones up, as there is a risk of damaging the head with a fallen stone. And this, in my opinion, is not so bad.

Thus, I remove one of the main claims to the cartoon.

At what age can a child watch cartoons? While parents enjoy such rare moments of relaxation, their child sits in front of the TV and watches his favorite cartoons.

It would seem that one should rejoice. After all, the child seems to be developing, having fun, in the future he will be able to talk with friends on the main cartoon topics. But still, something confuses parents.

Experts say that the child’s brain does not rest while watching TV, but develops vigorous activity. The child’s brain literally assimilates the continuous stream of pictures, because the child’s brain is not yet able to distinguish where the real world is and where it is invented. And you also need to know at what age a child can watch cartoons.

The influence of cartoons on children

It is important to understand how cartoons affect children.

Positive influence:

  • thanks to cartoons, a child learns to distinguish truth from fiction;
  • the child gets acquainted with positive qualities and learns to behave correctly in difficult situations;
  • baby distinguishes between evil and good;
  • animated films give a chance to try on different social roles for a son or daughter.

Negative influence:

  • constant change of colorful images is harmful to eyesight;
  • the child’s speech develops poorly, because he lacks the words that he hears from a laptop or tablet. The child needs a real conversation, otherwise there will be problems with communication in the future.
  • It is by nature that the child learns about the objects of our Universe through sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste. And when only sight and hearing are involved, the child’s mental abilities develop less. After all, he also needs to touch objects, smell them, taste them.
  • Cartoons hinder the development of concentration, analytical skills, the ability to think and reflect.

At what age can cartoons be shown?

Parents must know at what age they can show cartoons to their child. Experts say that you should start showing children’s programs no earlier than the son or daughter turns three. This is due to the fact that before this age the child develops psychomotor. The fact is that the baby’s brain works only when he interacts with any objects or hears the voice of his mother, who reads to him. If a child watches cartoons before the age of three, there is a chance that his development will be inferior. This is especially true for his speech. In addition, it is extremely important for the baby in the first years of life to be with the mother all the time. And by putting him in front of the TV, you seem to be moving away from your son or daughter, destroying your connection with the child. Therefore, it is important to remember at what age children can be introduced to the TV.

How long can you watch cartoons?

Parents should not forget about how much time you can watch cartoons for children. A kid of 3-4 years old should be shown simple animated films lasting 10-15 minutes. A single cartoon per day is enough. A son or daughter 4-6 years old can watch a maximum of one full-length film per day. In addition to the positive aspects, the TV and the computer also have a negative impact. Therefore, it is important to remember how many cartoons a child can watch per day.

Which cartoons to choose?

Phrases from the animated series about Masha and the Bear are quoted even by adults. A retired circus bear, by the will of fate, every cartoon series receives Masha as a guest, to whom troubles are attracted like a magnet. It can be seen that the creators have worked hard on the image and artistic meaning. Specialists in the child’s psyche saw a negative message in the cartoon: «you can behave as you please, and you will not be responsible for anything. » The main character has a painful hyperactivity based on a lack of attention and selfishness. The series removes all taboos on the bad behavior of a child. Psychologists advise watching a cartoon with parents so that adults comment on Masha’s actions and say that such behavior is unacceptable.

All girls dream of Winx fairy dolls. According to the plot, in each series, six spectacular young ladies study at the school of fairies, fight dark forces and arrange their personal lives.

The main characters are the realization of the fantasies of designers Dolce and Gabbana. Young ladies with a doll face, beautiful legs, graceful waists, long hair and dressed 16+. Looking at them, girls have a false idea of beauty that does not exist in nature. Young spectators develop inferiority complexes in relation to their own appearance. In addition, the Winx fairies ridicule such qualities as compassion, mercy, kindness, modesty. In the animated series, female power dominates, beautiful heroines are rude, they can hit — in the full sense of the word they stand up for themselves. The message of the cartoon: «I deserve a beautiful life without a drop of work.» All the work for the beautiful divas is done by their little assistants.

According to psychologists, the animated series about the Barboskin family shows an obviously unhealthy family model. Parents of puppies go about their business from series to series and appear on the screen when it is necessary to scold children or fulfill their whims in the form of purchases. The life of puppies is built on swearing, name-calling and intrigue. The main characters: a stupid blonde, a nerd with glasses, a sports fan who does not shine with intellect and a mediocre kid, a sneak with speech therapy defects — hackneyed stereotypes.

These are not all the animated series that are often shown on TV and that psychologists have questions about. Nevertheless, childhood cannot be imagined without cartoons. A complete ban will generate even more interest. What to do? Watch cartoons with your child.
