Numberock’s Decimals to Fractions Song will teach your 4th Graders how to connect decimals to fractions while providing the foundation for understanding decimal place value and further fractional relationships, which they will likely be exposed to in 5th Grade and beyond.

When this concept is mastered, your students should be able to understand that a decimal such as 0.7, for example, can also be represented by the fraction 7/10 and vice versa. Students in 4th Grade are suggested to be able to understand decimal to fraction relationships by moving to the right of the decimal point as much as two places, ie, the tenths and hundredths place.

It’s also important to understand that any number can be represented in decimal notation. Think about how even a whole number such as 25, for example, can be represented as a decimal. 25.00 and 25.0 are examples of how the number 25 can be represented as a decimal, despite its whole number status. We actually see this example all the time in our daily activities when it comes to representing values of money. Oftentimes, a whole number value of money, such as $25, is represented in decimal notation as $25.00.

Verse 1
If you split the number one into ten parts,
that’s where the decimal place values start.
They’re values less than one — they’re quite small —
like zero point one, which is a decimal, y’all.
This number as a fraction is one over ten,
and zero point one is it’s decimal equivalent.
Fractions over ten, one hundred, one thousand and on,
are all decimal numbers — it’s a phenomenon.

the tenth tenth makes one whole on the number line.

Let’s see what happens as the place value decreases,
and one tenth is divided into ten equal pieces.
We get a hundredth; written as point zero one;
and ten of these make a tenth, but we’re not done!
Every ten hundredths makes another tenth on the chart
then something special happens at the ninety-ninth equal part…
Because at ninety-nine hundredths we’re one hundredth away
From one whole, or one hundred hundredths, you could say.

Fun Ways to Teach Decimals

It may be tempting to just jump in and starting adding and subtracting decimals, but I highly suggest a little time of exploration first. These decimal activities are a great place to start. 

First, let children play with base ten blocks, draw, color, and create number lines using decimals. These hands on decimal activities will give a multisensory learning experience.

Referring to the experience of teaching children at SpeakOk, as well as the specifics of teaching in modern schools, we decided to help young parents and your children explain a simple, but today very incomprehensible and abstruse terminology topic for modern schoolchildren — a decimal fraction.
And your children can be understood, because instead of a clear and visual explanation, such abstruse terms as “ranks”, “natural numbers”, “numerator”, “denominator” often fly in them — often without explaining to children the very meaning of these terms, believing that they should know this for granted.
Therefore, our tutoring center decided especially for you to explain in this article the nature of ordinary and decimal fractions.

The meaning of the decimal fraction

Before proceeding to the explanation of the decimal fraction, we want to remind you of the basic meaning and concept of the fraction as such, to provide your view of the types of fractions, and of course, «without problems» to point out the difference between them.
So, what is a fraction — this is a type of number in mathematics indicating a part of a whole (a piece of something), or an indicator of a whole number with its conditional «piece» of the remainder.
For example — let’s say we have a watermelon, which we divide with you into 6 pieces. And we take with you one of these pieces, that is, one of six

Then we will write this fraction as 1/6.

If we take four pieces of this watermelon with you, then we will get a fraction 4/6. This is what concerns the most fractional number.

Now let’s say that we took 4 whole watermelons with you, and one more of the eight pieces into which we divided the fifth watermelon:
Then the resulting number will look like 4 1/8 (four whole one-eighth), where our fraction is 1/ 8 this is our fractional remainder. We hope this is clear)
Let’s move on to the forms of writing a number. So in modern mathematics there are two main forms of writing fractions:

  • the usual form (ordinary fraction) — 1/2 or a / b where a and b are some numbers
  • decimal view (decimal fraction) — 0.5 (read as five tenths).

In an ordinary fraction, the dividend is always written above the line (the number that is divided by something) — this number is called the numerator, and under the line we place the divisor (the number by which we divide) — the denominator bearing the proud name, while the line between numbers in mathematical essence means division.

Thus, we smoothly bring you to the mathematical meaning of the decimal fraction. As you know, we write integers as some number, let’s say 5, while if we are asked to write an integer as a fraction, we will write it as 5/1.
It is worth noting that, according to its specifics, in a decimal fraction, the denominator is always equal to 10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc. From this we can observe that a decimal fraction is what is obtained if we divide the numerator by the denominator, in which the comma acts as a conditional separator line to separate the integer part from the fractional, in which the numbers before the decimal point indicate the number of integers, and the numbers after the decimal point display the fractional remainder. Like this:

  • 0.2 (two tenths)
  • 7.53 (seven point fifty-three hundredths)
  • 2.573 (two point five hundred and seventy-three thousandths)
  • And so on

The final decimal fraction is a kind of decimal fraction in which the number of digits after the decimal point has a strictly defined number.

Infinite decimal — the case when the number of decimal places will be repeated an infinite number of times.

Properties of decimal fractions

The main property of a decimal fraction is that if there are a certain number of zeros at the end of the number, its value will not change. Which allows us to discard them if they are present, or if they are absent, if we are faced with the goal of increasing the rank of the fraction, we can simply add them. For example:

  • 0.700 = 0.7
  • 72.30500000 = 72.305
  • For the first time in power, we can beat you up on the sides.

From here we will assume that ordinary and decimal fractions are “bosom friends” and here is the relationship between them:

  • The integer part of a decimal fraction is equal to the integer part of an ordinary fraction. If the numerator is less than the denominator as a result of splitting the fraction, the integer part is equal to zero.
