Origin, Meaning, And History Of Briella
Briella is the shortened form of the name Gabriella, which is the feminine variant of Gabriel. This Hebrew name is derived from the canonical archangel Gabriel, who is a prominent figure in all Abrahamic religions such as Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The name’s meaning is ‘God is my strength,’ ‘my strength in God,’ or ‘strength in God.’
Gabriel is an archangel who conveys God’s will to humanity. He is described as a saint, guardian angel, and defender of Israel, along with archangel Michael. According to the Hebrew Bible, he explains his visions to the prophet Daniel and is mentioned in various Jewish scriptures like the Book of Enoch.
In Islam, Gabriel is a revered archangel sent by Allah to guide and impart wisdom to Prophet Muhammad and other religious figures. Additionally, the initial five verses of the 96th chapter called Al-Alaq in the Quran were dictated by Gabriel to Muhammad himself.
In the Bible, Gabriel appears in the stories of Annunciation in the Gospel of Luke. He appeared to Virgin Mary and Zechariah while announcing the imminent arrival of Jesus and John the Baptist. The Yazidi tribe identifies Gabriel with the archangel Melek Taus, a central figure in their religion entrusted by God to look after the world. Additionally, he is considered one of their Seven Mysteries. Some variations and diminutives of the name are Bria, Brie, Bree, Gabi, Gaby, Gabriella, Gabrielle, and Ella.
It is difficult to find Briella in popular culture, however, its variant, Gabriel is the chief archangel who guards heaven/paradise in the famous epic poem Paradise Lost, written by John Milton. Gibreel is a character from the novel The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie who believes he is the modern incarnation of the archangel Gabriel. In the cult-favorite movie Constantine starring Keanu Reeves, Tilda Swinton plays the androgynous archangel Gabriel. Andy Whitfield plays the titular role of Gabriel in the namesake movie released in 2007, where he vanquishes the evil forces in purgatory to save souls.

Brielle is a city of four hundred monuments.
Brielle is an old bastion town in the province of South Holland, near Rotterdam, whose name comes from the Celtic word brogilo, which means «closed area, hunting grounds». For a long time the city was the feudal residence of the local counts van Voorne, until in 1371, after the death of the last count, it was annexed to the province of Holland. On April 1, 1572, Brielle became the first city to be liberated during the Eighty Years’ War for the independence of the northern territories from the Spanish Empire. In the Middle Ages, the city had its own trading harbor and actively traded with the cities of the Baltic Sea, in particular, with Gdansk.
Mostly built in the 17th century, the bastion, inside which the historical part of the city is located, is one of the best preserved examples of defensive structures in Holland, is one of the 400 Brielle monuments protected by the state. In terms of the number of historical monuments per capita, Brielle shares the first place in the Netherlands with the city of Harlingen (Friesland).
Bird’s eye view of Brielle.
I learned about Brill from Nastya zhabba , was even going to visit the city with his wife on a motorcycle, but on the way we got stuck (in a good way) in another bastion city — Hellevoetsluis. Less than a year later, friends came to visit us with their little daughter from Berlin. And I convinced them that there was nothing else to see in Holland besides Brielle. They have a big car, two families fit in, and there is still room for wheelchairs. And we went.
In Holland, like — if you look at the horizon, then where a church sticks out of the trees — there is a city or a village, otherwise there are no frills. And Brielle does not stand out from afar — the 57-meter tower of the Sint Catharijnekerk church sticks out of green thickets, the city starts like a city — a gas station and an ordinary suburb, but as soon as you move across a moat, you immediately find yourself in another world.
Central square, two minutes walk to it. Two main streets with shops and cafes intersect here crosswise. In the center of the photo is the city hall building. From here, since 1400, the administration of the city has been conducted, and courts were held here earlier. So in 1628, a woman who poisoned her five husbands and eight children was sentenced to be burned. Her last words «Nyet sonder Godt» (translated as «Not without God» I think) are carved in stone in front of the town hall.
Gift shop.
Corner house on the square.
One of the main streets leading to the old harbor. I didn’t notice the harbor, I rode across the bridge over the water with Lena around my neck, so there won’t be any photos of the harbor, but maybe it’s for the better.
The White Chapel is Jacobskerk built in the 15th century, that is, Yashkin’s Church. From 1572 it served as a garrison chapel. The clock on the tower is from 1696. Refurbished in 1985-87.
Three wonderful, spacious houses on the sunny side of the street. In crowded but not mad.
Mailbox in the wall.
An announcement on the door of the house: «This house is for sale, 265 thousand euros, historical monument, 4 floors, partially renovated.» I photographed the house very unsuccessfully, I say, Lena sat on my neck all the way, but I am attaching a photo. Here it is, the yellow brick. You can see three floors, you can believe in the fourth, but 265 thousand, even though it is a monument ???
Cafe «Black Sheep» on the shore of the harbor.
When I came close to the water with Lena on my shoulders, she told me: «Dad, be careful, if you fall into the water, you will be gone. Then we will have to go to the store and buy another dad.»
What a mess in my daughter’s thoughts. I told her: «Lena, you have only one dad, and if I fall into the water, then you won’t have a dad anymore. You can’t buy another dad.» Then I hear Lena tell her mother: «If dad falls into the water, then he will no longer exist. And you can’t buy another dad in the store.» Here, I think it’s better.
After walking for a couple more minutes, we reached the outskirts of the city, to Bastion No. 9. In total, the defensive structures surrounding Brielle include 9 bastions protruding from the coastline in the shape of a half hexagon, 5 fortified peninsulas and 4 ports (in the sense of entry- departure).
Top view of the coastline of the bastion. Cannons are still standing everywhere, and sheep roam the protective dams.
I don’t know much about guns (to be honest, not at all), but I think that «Luik, 1819»- this is the place and year of smelting the cannon (Belgian Liege), but the number is probably serial.
In the clearing in front of the bastion are the ruins of the Northern City Gate, through which on April 1, 1572 the rebels entered Brill and captured the city, which marked the beginning of the Eighty Years’ War — the Dutch Bourgeois Revolution for independence from the Spanish Empire. April 1 is always widely celebrated in Brill.
And this is another, preserved, city gate, which became part of the bastion built later.
In the clearing in front of the 9th bastion, we had a halt, a smoke break and a photo shoot. Our friends Grit, Christian and their daughter Clara (9 months old).
When it comes to such tosses, Lena and Yasha stand in line one after another. They really like to fly.
And this is what Bastion #8 looks like.
Walking along the city wall between the bastions, we came to the Sint Catharijntkerk, built in the Brabant Gothic style. The church was conceived as the largest in the medieval province of Holland, but was never completed. Construction began in 1417. In 1456 there was a fire, and in 1482 the money ran out and construction stopped. The tower had to be rebuilt another 20 meters.
You can’t walk past the playground with Lena.
Church floor with tombstones.
Mosaic stained glass windows.
Organ.
Climbing the tower costs 1 miserable euro. I was ready and for more money, and then I galloped up to meet the views from above without any regrets for the waste. I like to climb higher and look further.
On the way I met an information board telling about the clock mechanism and the bell tower. «The striking clock was installed in 1578. The clock struck 8 times within an hour until 1956 years old Previously, it was necessary to climb the tower daily to wind the clock and — separately — to strike the clock. Currently, the clock is controlled by an electronic clock mechanism that receives accurate time signals from a long-wave transmitter of an atomic clock in Frankfurt, Germany. The electronic clock mechanism, in turn, starts the bell computer that controls the bells, and a soft, velvety ringing is heard, characteristic of the most beautiful bell ensemble in the Netherlands. The oldest and heaviest (4500 kg) of the three percussion bells dates back to 1482 and bears the name Catherine (in Dutch the bell is feminine), it strikes for the whole hour. 19the oldest of the 47 playing bells date back to 1660. The smallest weighs 6.6 kg, the largest — 1735 kg. During the Second World War, the bells were loaded onto a barge for transportation to Germany, but the barge named Hope for Victory sank off the coast of Holland. After the war, the bells were taken from the barge, only two were missing.»
Bell ringing.
The famous views of Brielle from the tower (if they were not famous, they will definitely become now).
As I understand it, the main thing is that the facade of the house should be even, and the rest of the house does not care where it is being built.
Yashkina church and corn mill «Flying Deer».
One of the two main streets.
Some smart guy cut off the gabled roof and made himself a terrace.
And this is a boat on the spire of the church….
… and a boat on the flagpole at the ninth bastion.
We approached the church from the rear, and from the front side people were met by a huge wall with a small entrance somewhere to the left. I have already said that the church was unfinished, and according to the foundation laid in the place of these trees, there should be another huge hall.
And the chestnut trees are in full bloom…
Piglet on the way to the church with a cafe, a cannon of the counts van Voorne, an improvised guillotine and a water pump, the stone part of which was built in 1614. During the collection of water, housewives and servants exchanged the latest city news on this patch.
Yasha still can’t enjoy his ability to walk, like a hare with a battery in his butt is going somewhere. I just point the camera, click, turn around — Yasha has already run away somewhere. Well, the city center is pedestrian, even though there are no cars.
Tourist index.
Brielle is also known for a large number of façade frescoes, both monumental (like on the city hall) and not so much, like in the photographs:
This facade mural on a former orphanage shows a classroom with girls on the left and boys on the right.
Some of the newly built houses follow an ancient tradition.
The courthouse and city prison with its facade fresco was built in 1623 and was used for its intended purpose until 1877. Now it is a city historical museum.
A couple more photos of local architectural landmarks.
And so we returned to where we started our journey — to the main entrance / entrance to the city. Behind me is the
bridge and goodbye, Brielle.
You took a little piece of my heart from me.
