 The contents page (table of contents) is a crucial aspect in any book. It tells the reader what to expect – how many chapters there are, what the sections of the book look like, how long it is, and what pages they can find certain topics on. The table of contents is found in the frontmatter of the book, along with the dedication and the epigraph. It may seem like a small aspect of the book, but it’s a necessary one.

A table of contents page lists out what the book includes. This can be section topics, chapter titles, and discussions. In fiction (novels), the table of contents lists the chapter titles and the pages they’re found on. In some instances, these chapters will have creative and unique titles. In others, they may simply read “Chapter One,” “Chapter Two,” and so on.

In nonfiction books – like biographies or memoirs or historical books – chapter titles, sections, descriptions, and page numbers can be found. Descriptions for sections or chapters are more often used in textbooks, biographies, historical books, etc. In cookbooks, the contents page contains a list of meals with page numbers where the recipes can be found.

Why is a Table Of Contents Necessary?

A table of contents is important to orient the reader. It gives them a roadmap to the novel (just like a plot outline acts as a map to the writer). Breaking up writing into manageable chunks (sections, parts, chapters) makes it easier to digest for readers. Plus – if someone flips open the book to the contents page and likes the creative chapter titles, this could convince them to purchase the book!

In nonfiction books the contents page serves as a reference and makes it easier to jump around from section to section, say, if the book was being used in a classroom setting.

Designing a Table Of Contents Page

A book contents page design should be clean and simple. The text should be uniform and neat and the same as the rest of the text in the book. The reason the Table Of Contents design should be neat is that the reader should be able to easily and quickly peruse the book’s contents. When creating a table of contents, like anything else in the novel, always keep the reader in mind.

How to create a table of contents in Word

Imagine you’re working with a really long document in Microsoft Word, like an academic paper or a big report. Depending on the project, it might be dozens or even hundreds of pages long! When a document is this large, it can be difficult to remember which page has what information. Fortunately, Word allows you to insert a table of contents, making it easy to organize and navigate your document.

A table of contents is just like the list of chapters at the beginning of a book. It lists each section in the document and the page number where that section begins. A really basic table of contents might look like this:

You could create a table of contents manually—typing the section names and page numbers—but it would take a lot of work. And if you ever decide to rearrange your sections or add more information, you’ll have to update everything all over again. However, with the right formatting, Word can create and update a table of contents automatically.

Step 1: Apply heading styles

If you’ve already read our Applying and Modifying Styles lesson, you know they’re an easy way to add professional text formatting to different parts of your document. Styles also serve another important purpose: adding a hidden layer of organization and structure to your document.

If you apply a heading style, you’re telling Word that you’ve started a new part of your document. When you insert the table of contents, it will create a section for each heading. In the table of contents above, each chapter uses a heading style, so there are four sections.

To apply a heading style, select the text you want to format, then choose the desired heading in the Styles group on the Home tab.

Step 2: Insert the table of contents

Now for the easy part! Once you’ve applied heading styles, you can insert your table of contents in just a few clicks. Navigate to the References tab on the Ribbon, then click the Table of Contents command. Select a built-in table from the menu that appears, and the table of contents will appear in your document.

As you can see in the image below, the table of contents uses the heading styles in your document to determine where each section begins. Sections that begin with a Heading 2 or Heading 3 style will be nested within a Heading 1 style, much like a multilevel list.

A table of contents also creates links for each section, allowing you to navigate to different parts of your document. Just hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and click to go to any section.

Step 3: Update as needed

If you edit or add to your document, it’s easy to update the table of contents. Just select the table of contents, click Update Table, and choose Update Entire Table in the dialog box that appears. The table of contents will then update to reflect any changes.

How did we do it?

The Content Brick method was invented by us in 2016 and increased the speed and simplicity of designing the structure of websites several times by creating and distributing content blocks for each individual page and then combining these pages into one common structure.

Let’s start at the beginning and explain everything in more detail.

Creation history of the Content Brick method

Even before the creation of the Octopus tool, from our long-term practice of creating websites, we realized that it was most convenient and fastest to design the structure of sites on ordinary paper stickers.

It sounds funny, but we really did prototype sites on paper stickers until 2019, until we created Octopus, and here’s why.

In the hands was a stack of small stickers with a felt-tip pen and a table surface where it was convenient to lay out the signed stickers.

One sticker is one page of the site (page). It is worth noting that the shape of the rectangle is the same for both the site and the sticker.

A site page cannot be empty (although there are some), it will definitely contain content, such as text, a picture, a news announcement, a list of services, a contact form, etc. Even the small “404 error” text is content.

Therefore, visualizing the information structure of the site page, we made a list of content blocks with a felt-tip pen on a sticker, marking each with a bullet. We called these post-it content bulletins bricks, probably because we were building a website. Thus, we soon began to call them Content Brick or Content Block, but the name stuck first.

In a few hours, a lot of leaves (future pages of the website — Page) appeared on the table, arranged in a hierarchical order. And each such leaflet contained a list of Content Brick.

It was really visual. Thanks to the Contents Brick on the leaflets, it was possible to design the number of future pages and the links between them.

How it all began

Each sticker is a page of a site or application, and bullets are information blocks (content bricks), thanks to which you can design the number of pages, content and links between pages.

By the way, you can still use paper stickers and a marker or use Octopus.

Step 1: Mainpage First vs Structure First

The first thing you need to decide is the method of choosing to build the website structure: Mainpage First or Structure First (start from the main page or from the general structure)

It’s not hard to guess that this is the way to create a structure, starting from the main page. First, create a master page and in it try to present the future content of the content using the content brick. For example, what can be on the main page?

  • Footer

You now have a powerful starting point for deciding what the next pages of the website you are designing will be. All that remains for you is to describe the following pages in the same way and define the hierarchical relationship between them.

Structure First

This is our favorite method. It starts with thinking through all the main pages of the site at once and further concentration on each page separately. For example, we need to develop a corporate website. By searching the Internet, you can quite simply create a structure from the following sections:

Step 2. Visualization of content blocks
