Properties of multiplication

Multiplication is an arithmetic operation that involves two arguments: multiplier and multiplier. The result of their multiplication is called the product.

Commutative property of multiplication

From the permutation of the places of the factors, the product does not change.

That is, for any numbers a and b the equality is true: a * b = b * a.

This property can be applied to products with more than two factors.

Examples:

  • 4 * 2 * 3 = 3 * 2 * 4 = 24.

Associative property of multiplication

The product of three or more factors will not change if some group of factors is replaced by their product.

That is, for any numbers a, b and c the equality is true: a * b * c = (a * b) * c = a * (b * c).

Example:

  • 3 * 2 * 5 = 3 * (2 * 5) = 3 * 10 = 30
  • or

  • 3 * 2 * 5 = (3 * 2) * 5 = 6 * 5 = 30.

The associative property can be used to simplify multiplication calculations. For example: 25 * 15 * 4 = (25 * 4) * 15 = 100 * 15 = 1500.

If you do not apply the associative property and calculate sequentially, the solution will be much more difficult: 25 * 15 * 4 = (25 * 15) * 4 = 375 * 4 = 1500.

Distributive property of multiplication with respect to addition

To multiply a sum by a number, you need to multiply each term by that number and add the results.

That is, for any numbers a, b and c the equality is true: (a + b) * c = a * c + b * c.

This property works with any number of terms: (a + b + c + d) * k = a * k + b * k + c * k + d * k.

Taking into account the commutative property of multiplication, the rule can be reformulated as follows:

To multiply a number by the sum of numbers, you need to multiply this number separately by each term and add the resulting products.

Distributive property of multiplication with respect to subtraction

That is, multiplying by one does not change the multiplied number: a * 1 = a.

Properties of division

Division is the reverse of multiplication. As a result of division, a number (quotient) is obtained, which, when multiplied by a divisor, gives the dividend.

Basic properties of integer division

  1. Division by zero is not possible.
  2. Division of zero by a number: 0 : a = 0.
  3. Division of equal numbers: a : a = 1.
  4. Division by one: a : 1 = a.
  5. The commutative property does not hold for division: a : b ≠ b : a.
  6. Divide the sum and difference by a number: (a ± b) : c = (a : c) ± (b : c).
  7. Dividing a product by a number:
    (a * b) : c = (a : c) * b if a is divisible by c;
    (a * b) : c = a * (b : c) if b is divisible by c;
    (a * b) : c = a * (b : c) = (a : c) * b if a and b are divisible by c.
  8. Dividing a number by the product:
    a : (b * c) = (a : b) : c = (a : c) : b.

And one more important property of division, which takes place in the 5th grade:

If the dividend and the divisor are multiplied or divided by the same natural number, then their quotient does not change.

In literal form, this property looks like this: a : b = (a * k) : (b * k) , where k is any natural number.

Let’s apply the properties of division in practice.

Example 1

Calculate: 500 * (100 : 5).

How we solve: 500 * (100 : 5) = (500 * 100) : 5 = 50000 : 5 = 10000.

Answer: 500 * (100 : 5) = 10000.

Example 2

Simplify expression: 27a – 16a.

How do we solve: 27a — 16a = a * 27 — a * 16 = a * (27 — 16) = a * 11 = 11a.

Answer: 11a.
