200+ Cute Girl Cat Names Perfect for Your Purr-ty Princess

Welcoming a new feline family member is an exciting time, and one way to involve the whole family is through name selection. As with boy cat names, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to girl cat names—so much so that, sometimes, it can be hard to agree. There’s an art to picking monikers, and given you’re potentially going to be using the pet name for 15 or more years, you want to get it right.

Certified animal behaviorist Janet Cutler, PhD, explains that naming a cat is an important step in forming a bond with them. “It allows us to see them as individuals, with their own distinct personalities,” she says.

But if you’re struggling to come up with a short list of the best names for your furry friend, we have some expert-approved tips to help you out. We’ve also compiled more than 200 suggestions, including cute, unique, color-coordinated and funny cat names for inspiration.

Get Reader’s Digest’s Read Up newsletter for more pets, humor, cleaning, travel, tech and fun facts all week long.

What are the best girl cat names?

There isn’t a definitive list of the best names for girl cats. A lot comes down to your preferences and possibly your kitty’s personality and appearance. For example, some work well for small cat breeds and others for orange cat breeds.

While independent cats might not be as quick to respond to their names as dogs, Cutler says they “can tell the difference between their name and other words that are the same length and have similar accents as their own name.”

You probably don’t want to go with a name that’s overly long, too similar to other pets in your home or difficult to pronounce. A better option? Cutler explains that studies show cats can discriminate between different vowel sounds. So a name with long vowel sound endings (like Sophie or Lucy) might be a winner, especially if you have multiple pets.

Whatever you pick, be sure to take steps that’ll help your cat recognize its name and increase the chances of it responding. It’s all about repetition and positive associations with food, play or attention. “Ideally, you want to start close to them and say their name and give them a treat,” Cutler says. “Over time, you can gradually move farther away.”

And try not to let your cat’s name be something it associates with unpleasantness or punishment. That can happen if cats are constantly “called away from something they like doing or [are] called by their name so they can be placed in their carrier,” Cutler says.

Princess might have been one of the most popular pet names of the last 125 years, but popular girl cat names are often more human-like these days. Cute girl cat names

Choose a cute pet name if looking at your kitty makes your heart melt. And if you really want to catch your pet’s attention, adopt a mushy, high-pitched tone whenever you use a cutesy name. “Cats can recognize speech directed toward a cat from speech directed toward another adult,” Cutler says. “However, they seem to only do this with people familiar to them, so it may be individual pitches and tones from familiar people that are important.”

It’s cuteness overload with the adorable cat names below. And if you have a hound in the house, be sure you have the best dog name too.

The latter rely on the meaning of the name, believing that the fate and character of a person depends on it.

For others, the rarity of the name is important, so that “not like everyone else”, and so on.

But even with such different approaches, there are names that are given to children more often than others. And some are popular not only within one country, but also the world as a whole.

The name Sofia comes from the Greek language and literally translates as “wisdom, science”. It is believed that the owners of this name are calm and reasonable personalities.

Today, this female name is the most popular in the world. It is among the leaders in Russia, Italy, Slovakia, Chile, Mexico and Estonia. Moreover, derivatives of this name are also popular: Sophia, Sophie. Moreover, the religion of the families in which Sophias are born also varies.

This is how girls are called in Orthodox families, and in Muslim, and among atheists. The spread of the same name throughout the globe without reference to a specific place and customs occurs because cultural and territorial borders are open and accessible, and therefore there is a mixture of mentalities, nationalities and traditions.

Before the popularization of the name Sofia, the undisputed leader was the name Maria (or Mari) — TOP-13 popular female names in the world. , but translated from Hebrew as «bitterness», and in Orthodoxy as «lady».

Most often this is the name given to girls in Russia, CIS countries and Germany.

The next name in our rating. Derivatives of Anastasia, Nastasia, Anastasia. Popular in Russia, and in the USA, and in Canada.

It comes from the male name Anastasius and is translated from ancient Greek as “resurrected”, “returned to life”.

The name was also at one time the world leader, and although now the first places are given to other names, it still remains in demand. The name Anna is Christian. It came to us from Hebrew and means «grace, mercy.»

Distributed in Russia, Germany, Great Britain, USA, Poland, Belarus, Armenia. Depending on the country, there are different forms of the name: Hanna, Ganna, Ana, Annette, Annabelle.

An interesting fact: the biblical male form of the name Anna is Hanan.

The well-known Latin «victory» is another popular name in the world.

Distributed in Russia, UK, Ukraine and Belarus.

The name Jane is especially popular in English-speaking countries: USA and a number of European countries.

But the name Jane also has derivative forms: Julia — Italy, Julia — Sweden and Russia, Juliet — Canada and France, Yule — Poland. In most sources, the name is translated as «who accepted God’s mercy» and «curly.»

It is not the name Emma itself that can be called popular, but the popular names of all consonant with it: Emily, Emily.

It would seem that it should be common in the US and Europe, but with the current trend towards rare names, girls are called that way in Russia as well.

Derived from a Hebrew name, which literally means «God is my oath, by God I swear.»

Distributed in Russia. In other countries it sounds like Isabella, Isabelle, Bella, Bela.

And although this name is not in the leading positions, it is impossible to say that it is not popular. Translated from Greek, it means «protector».

Girls are so called in both hemispheres, both in the basic form and in derivatives: Alexa, Alexandrina, Cassandra, Sandra, Lexa.

Or otherwise Daria, Dasha, Tarja. The main distribution of the name falls on Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. However, girls are also called Dasha in Italy, Serbia, and Finland.

It comes from the Persian name Dareyos and means «possessing good».
