How the fashion for names has changed today

Gazeta.Ru found out how babies are now called, which names are popular compared to the 90s, and more — how the surge of patriotism affected the names.

Every year in September there is a very definite surge in the birth rate: there is too little entertainment on dark winter evenings in Russia. We decided to see what names came into fashion and check whether Polina and Sonya can now really be found everywhere, and Lena and Olya have become owners of very rare names.

Traditional names
Fashion for baby names is constantly changing. But there are those who have not gone out of use for centuries, and the modern child named by this name will not be subjected to ridicule by classmates because of him. These are the names of Russian saints or names with Greek and Latin roots. Here, for example, is the ranking of the most popular baby names in 1900:

The most popular boy names:

4 Miroslavs in 1990 — 176 in 2011.

39 Vasilis in 1990 — 896 in 2011.

The number of Catherine, Ann, Julius and Irin goes in the opposite direction at about the same speed. Olga almost disappeared altogether (at 19There were 2450 of them in the 90th, and only 465 in 2011).

The same happens in boys. Compared with 1990, the number of Alexandrovs has halved (2950 versus 4503), and the popularity of Dmitrievs has been steadily declining every year (2345 versus 3520).

But if in 1990 there were only seven Platons, in 2011 there are already 257. Artemiev became 377 (was 20). Matveev 1446 (was 41), Timofeev 1210 (was 103), Makarov 373 (was three)

The trend is obvious. The parents got bored with traditional names and switched to names that seem more traditional and more Russian to them.

Moreover, it is interesting that if we return to the statistics for 1900, it turns out that the traditional names in Russia are just those that parents began to reject. Everyone was drawn to Russian connotations.

This is due to the fact that in modern Russia it has become most popular to call a child a name that seems to parents to be ancient Russian. This is the popularity rating of unusual baby names (for boys, Zakhar is in the first place, for girls — Vasilisa).

After any historical event, especially patriotic citizens experience a strong aggravation of love for the Motherland. We went through this more than once and, of course, we remember how the girls were called Oktyabrins, Dazdraperms (in honor of the First of May) and Vladlens (in honor of Lenin).

Then Gagarin flew into space and began: Uryurvkos (Hurrah, Yura in space!), Perkosrak (First space rocket), Waterpezhekosma (Valentina Tereshkova). And of course, the Olympics (in honor of the Olympics-80).

Speaking of the Olympics. In 2014, five girls were named in Russia for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

And, of course, there was a similar display of patriotism in connection with the annexation of Crimea to Russia. There are no exact statistics yet, since this event did not happen very long ago, but it is already known for certain about the girl who was named Feodosia, and about the boy, whose loving parents named the child Gurzuf (also in honor of the Crimean town).

The name Michael for the first time in many years has become the most popular among newborn boys. Prior to this, Alexander had the unchanging primacy. Nevertheless, the top five most popular baby names have not changed.

As MK found out, according to the Moscow Civil Registry Office, the name Mikhail took first place in popularity in the first quarter of 2023. Since the beginning of the year, parents have named Misha the largest number of newborn boys. The name Alexander unexpectedly dropped to second place, followed by Maxim, Mark and Leo.

The TOP 5 names for girls born in 2023 have not changed: these are Sofia (Sofya), Anna, Maria, Eva and Victoria. Among the rare unusual female names, experts singled out Kapitolina and Stella — this is how three girls were named in the first quarter of 2023. Two little Muscovites received the name Glafira. Also in the capital, one Barbara, Vesna and Vesta were born. One baby received an unusual name Dennitsa — in translation from Old Slavonic it means «morning star», the daughter of the Sun.

Among the rare and unusual names for boys born in 2023, registry office staff note such as Modest, Foma, Mario, Julian.

Specialists counted the number of couples who got married in the capital on the May holidays. This year, about 1,100 new families officially appeared on these dates.

The most popular date for a wedding was May 5 — many chose this day because of the beautiful combination of numbers 05.05. On this date, about 400 couples tied themselves with the bonds of Hymen. A third of them chose outdoor locations for the solemn ceremony: the newlyweds entered into family life in the City towers, at the Spartak stadium and on estates.
