What men who love women call — types of nicknames

Sunny, bunny, chamomile, baby, giraffe — as he communicates with you, a man chooses a nickname for you and often uses it instead of a name. In successful relationships, it can last until old age. As a man calls you, he refers to you — is this true?

How men who love women are called — types of nicknames

“My freckle” is how a 92-year-old man calls his 85-year-old wife. She was born on February 28, and now, from a very young age, he came up with this nickname for her and during more than half a century of marriage he did not stop calling her that. Each nickname has its own backstory.

Many of them express love, tenderness, others respect and honor. And the truth is that all of them are a manifestation of a certain attitude of a man towards his woman. The one who is in love will call his beloved a kitten, a swallow. To express respect, to show the lack of a deep connection, they use a patronymic name or the somewhat dry word «dear».

Media news2

Let’s take a closer look at what nicknames young people can come up with to address their girlfriends.

  • Neutral affectionate

Candy, sunshine, honey — such nicknames are often used during the period of falling in love. A man shows that he is in love with you, inspired by your relationship. However, it does not see your uniqueness. As long as you’re one of the many he could fall in love with.

Such nicknames are affectionate, pleasant. The unpleasant thing is that a man uses them most often in relation to many girls at a certain stage of the relationship.

Perhaps someone refers to the girl at later stages, but along with this nickname, there is a feeling of lack of depth in the relationship.

  • Standard

The most popular addresses are dear, beloved, dear. This is what men call their wives. The couple no longer has enchantment, insane passion. Remained even, respectful attitude.

In these words, there is a recognition that a woman has value for a man, and he bears responsibility for her. They show readiness for a long-term relationship, his desire to stay with her in any situation.

  • Abstract

Abstract nicknames have a more abstract character — my joy, miracle, your majesty. Their use cannot be attributed to any particular stage of the relationship. They show care, positive attitude, admiration.

Why doesn’t a man call his woman by her first name?

  • Official

A completely different shade appears if a man refers to a woman by name and patronymic. Such treatment means:

  • Respect;
  • Lack of trust, intimacy;
  • Sarcasm;
  • Weasel.

But you need to keep in mind that the understanding of the same things you and your partner may differ.

  • Animals

Very often you can hear how a man addresses a woman using the names of animals, birds. This is a kitten, a squirrel, a swallow, a tiger.

These nicknames hide tenderness, care, affection, love. If your young man addresses you this way, he tries to tell about his tender and warm feelings, to convey a playful mood.

  • Children’s

Children’s nicknames are not less rarely used. Among them are a baby, a doll, a baby doll, a baby, a baby.

The use of such names can be interpreted in two ways, depending on the situation:

  • A man tries to protect you, to show that he is strong, brave, and will never let you offend.

For him, you are the person he adores, ready to pamper.

  • A man shows some disdain for his soul mate.

Doesn’t consider her capable of defending herself, shows that she is an incapable doll, child.

  • Funny

A young man with a good sense of humor tends to call his beloved by funny nicknames. This is goat, donut, uchi-way.

Names can be funny, sophisticated, such that it seems not always possible to pronounce them. What is the popular crocodile worth.

But each such nickname is evidence of deep feelings, tenderness, love, passion, emotional intimacy. It’s simply impossible to call a person like that, to come up with such a name.

  • Associated with the name, surname

Nicknames often arise from the name, maiden name of a woman. Such names can be very gentle, funny, beautiful. So, Belkova becomes a squirrel, Golubeva — a dove, and Kotova — a kitten. Nastya can become Anastyunchik, and Alice can become a fox.

  • Offensive

Unfortunately, not all men treat their ladies with love and tenderness. There are always those who prefer contempt, humiliation, insults. Especially often this attitude is manifested in the families of male alcoholics, tyrants, manipulators.

Durynda, stupid, crazy, fat woman — you may find it terrible, but such nicknames are often used when referring to women.

Deciphering your nickname

And now let’s talk about the specific names that your young man bestows on you.

  • Angel — a man loves you, appreciates your pure relationship.
  • Baby — for a young man you are cute, sweet, but he does not experience deep feelings.
  • Your Majesty — the address may indicate respect or, conversely, speak of sarcasm.
  • Crow — a dismissive attitude, considers you stupid, distracted, below his dignity.
  • Stupid is one of the manifestations of parental attitude from the theory of E. Berne. A man is ready to help, take care of you, but at the same time he does not accept you as an equal.
  • Hedgehog — he is attracted by your prickly nature.
  • Bunny, hare — a manifestation of playfulness, tenderness.
  • Candy — this nickname shows the attitude towards a beautiful woman, as if she were a wrapper. There is probably no love here.
  • Kitten — your relationship is quite close; perhaps the guy is a little condescending, accepting your whims, trying to satisfy them.
  • Swallow — a manifestation of respect, love, trust.
  • Beloved is a clear expression of love, feelings, in which a young man is sure.
  • Kid — a rather neutral attitude, which, however, is often used to demonstrate reliability, confidence.
  • Pampushka is an affectionate, gentle treatment filled with love.
  • My little fish — such a nickname, it would seem, should also denote tenderness and affection, but in reality it often indicates the inconstancy of a man.
  • Tiger cub — a manifestation of a playful attitude, the search for bright moments, intimacy.

The riddle of any relationship can be unraveled by overhearing how partners address each other. Depending on their feelings, they can use offensive, tender, funny, children’s nicknames, address their loved ones using the names of animals.

Interview, EthnographyArmine Aharonyan Armenian traditions, Armenians, Armenian ethnos, Gyumri, Yerevan, names, Armenian names, Armenian nicknames

Nicknames have long gone beyond the criminal world, and in any small company, friends address each other using fictitious names. What do people usually put into nicknames? Under what circumstances can they appear? Are there any specific nicknames for Armenians? About this to the correspondent of the Armenian Museum of Moscow Armine Aharonyan culturologist and ethnographer Nikol Margaryan told .

Nikol Margaryan. Photo © Armine Aharonyan

Armine Aharonyan : When we talk about nicknames, we mean that there are differences in Russian and Armenian languages even at the level of synonyms, right?

Nikol Margaryan: In comparison with the Russian language, where everything is much clearer, in Armenian, for example, there are several words at once denoting a nickname. Each of them has its own function. For example, «makanun» is a synonym for the words «atsakan anun», «putanun», but they have differences. The word “makanun” in Armenian vocabulary sometimes also means a surname. In Russian, nicknames are more those names that contain an emotional assessment in themselves. They either encourage and express gratitude, noting the merits, or have a negative assessment, emphasizing and ridiculing the shortcomings, ironically over the person. This concept in the Armenian language is associated with “atsakan anun”, or, as the common people say, “lagab”. I specifically note the fact of the emotional coloring of these names, since they have a limited use — certain close and trusting relationships between people are necessary in order to use «lagab», especially if it is a negative connotation, so as not to offend a person.

AA: What can a nickname usually tell us about a person? By what criteria is it given?

N.M.: Usually nicknames are given in a certain intimate setting, in the presence of some kind of relationship in which there is delight, exaltation, disappointment, sycophancy or irony. In our time, nicknames do not arise in neutral relationships, except when a person, being a representative of a creative profession, chooses it for himself.

AA: Are you talking about a pseudonym now?

NM: No, a person usually hides behind a pseudonym, in this case, he associates himself with this nickname and appears to them in a certain environment. Ask why the nickname? Because I take some of the qualities attributed to me and turn it from informal to formal. Thus, not only my relatives can use it when addressing me, but also other complete strangers. In other cases, the nickname is usually chosen by others.

А.А.: In what periods of life does a person get a nickname more often?

N.M.: For example, at school. Most often, nicknames appear in primary grades. This is due to the fact that in young children the perception of the world is more figurative. Tellingly, in the senior classes, the number of nicknames is sharply reduced Just as it was with the first names among primitive people. At first they were more figurative, descriptive, later the idea of the transmigration of souls appeared and people began to be called names that did not suit a person at all. These names at the dawn of civilization were more like some kind of mathematical indices or codes — X. Y. Z. The names were very monosyllabic and gradually developed with the development of man and his language.

AA: How did religious beliefs affect the naming process?

NM: Names in a certain period of human history were a reflection of faith in the spirits of ancestors and magical influence. For example, children were called by the names of grandparents, whose souls, as the ancestors were convinced, moved into newborns. They could also call the baby the name of a person whose carrier was an authoritative person in society and possessed the qualities that parents would like to see in their child. Another facet of views is the names, which, according to popular ideas, had an incentive effect on the future fate and attracted health and well-being. For example, Yerdzhanik is happy, Astvatsatur is a gift from God, Gekhetsik is beautiful, Mnatsakan is a survivor, Apres is alive.

Further, in order to distinguish people with the same names, genus names appeared — surnames, but the names lost their originality.

AA: You spoke about the personification of nicknames. How to understand it?

NM: There is one study. It was carried out in a construction organization, among two work teams. Part of the workers lived together in a hostel and communicated with each other every day both at work and outside it. And the second group lived at home — the workers communicated with each other only at work. It turned out that in the group of workers living in a hostel, there were more nicknames than in the second group. This, as I said above, is due to the fact that closer, more intense relations have formed in the first brigade. And in the second group there were few nicknames, because people knew each other more superficially and were afraid to offend their comrades. I will say more, in an atmosphere of close friendly communication, nicknames are more personal in nature — they can only be used while being in this environment. Otherwise, you can make an enemy, since such familiar expressions are unacceptable in relation to unfamiliar people.

А.А.: Who is nicknamed more often — men or women?

N.M.: Naturally, for men.

A.A.: What is the reason for this?

NM: Men are more social. A simple example. It is possible to assess which professions are acceptable for women and which are considered purely masculine. I assure you, men have a much better chance in a professional sense, which means that men have more opportunities to prove themselves. In addition, if we consider nicknames in the context of our culture, then one fact becomes clear — men are more sociable, they rotate in various circles and their communication is quite intense. If a woman can meet with a friend or relative just a couple of times a week, then a man has a greater variability of contacts. (Laughs.) Armenians have a proverb — «a girl should have one friend — this is her mother.» In this case, I mean the cultural context and do not presume to judge whether this is good or bad. It’s just that, in essence, our culture provides men with more opportunities for socialization. However, if a girl communicates as intensely and, as they say, «crosses the line», then this gives rise to accusations of her frivolity. A man must communicate with a large number of people, because he solves problems: family, children, relatives, friends. A man must have many connections. We can say that a man creates relationships of different levels. And in some of these relationships, an environment is often formed that is fruitful for the emergence of nicknames. This is a purely social phenomenon. The same can be said about the surname and patronymic, which always inherit from the father. This is because in the society that we have inherited, it is believed that the father is responsible to him for the actions of the women of his family — his wife, daughter, all his children. The wife is also responsible to her husband within the family. The social life of men contributes to the development of activity in certain sections of society.

A.A.: And women?

NM: The female nicknames that I know of were usually applied to socially active women. Although in Gyumri, for example, in general, nicknames were given to women for obscene behavior. This means that the nicknames most often given to them are emotionally negatively colored. In the male environment, there are both good nicknames and bad ones.

А.А.: Was there a study conducted in the regions of Armenia – where which nicknames are more common?

NM: Even if such a study was carried out, then most likely it would be about differences in dialects. Because people, as I said, mostly give descriptive nicknames that have to do with pronounced physical and social qualities of a person. For example, the nickname Hammer will never be used among pastoralists. For pastoralists, the most likely occurrences are related to their daily activities, household items or livestock equipment. For example, nicknames formed according to the qualities of different types of livestock and their body parts. For example, Kotosh Vacho is horned, in the sense of stubborn. Mozi Seto is a one-year-old cow. Chipot Andrey (chipot is a twig, a rod).

А.А.: Are nicknames inherited?

NM: Usually not. As soon as this happens, the nickname immediately loses its emotional color. Nicknames can become an object of honor and dignity, or they can become part of a family name, and thus become a formal address. In this case, members of the genus understand where the roots of their surname grow from. For example, the surname Korkotyan comes from the word «korkot» (millet). And the name Khadzhatyan is associated with the phallus. In other words, at the moment when a nickname becomes formal and is written as a surname, it ceases to carry an emotional note and changes its status to an official one.

A.A.: Are there Turkish or Arabic influences on nicknames?

NM: In the past, if someone wanted to make fun of someone, they used the Turkish word to make the sarcasm sound sharper. I did research and compiled a classification of nicknames. As I said above, they are based on character traits and, emphasizing the shortcomings of a person, express their positive or negative attitude.

Classification of nicknames according to Nikol Margaryan. Five groups

1. External advantages and disadvantages

[what can be seen in a person with the naked eye. — Approx. ed.].
2. Spiritual, mental qualities.
3. Social status [gender, age, professional, position, wealthy (rich/poor) — Approx. ed.].
4. Advantages and disadvantages of behavior [how a person behaves. — Approx. ed.].
5. Eventive [bright episode of a person’s life. — Approx. ed.].

Nicknames are usually characteristic of small communities. If the nickname of a person does not concern his external qualities and you personally do not know him well, then you will hardly ever guess why he is called one way or another. There is one nuance. Nicknames can be: simple, comparative and opposite, depending on the degree of irony or admiration expressed.

AA: Are there any ethnic components of nicknames?

N.M.: No. Usually nicknames are associated with the type of activity, geography of residence, surrounding flora and fauna. And these factors are common not only in Armenia. If a person comes from an artisan environment, then his nickname will be appropriate. If he is engaged in cattle breeding, then it is clear that nicknames, especially comparative ones, will be associated with the animal world. Surnames and derivatives from them play an important role in the student environment.

AA: I heard that there are regions where the cult of nicknames is practiced. This is true?

NM: There are regions in Armenia where there is a tendency to give artificial nicknames without fail. For example, in the Yegheknadzor region, in the village of Khachik. The locals take pride in the fact that anyone who enters the village is immediately given a bright nickname. In this sense, Gyumri is also characteristic — here they also like to “name” a person in a special way. This property, according to Karlen Sekhbosyan [Armenian ethnographer studying the life and traditions of the city of Gyumri.
