Rare and beautiful female names and their meaning
Greetings to the readers of my blog! Let’s talk about names, about what are rare and beautiful names for girls. The topic was suggested to me by a friend, an elegant elderly lady, who told her comical story.
All her life this woman was proud of her rare and unusual name — Lapanalda. At school, at the institute, at work, among Ninochek and Valechek, she felt like a star.
The woman was happy. Parents, adhering to the views advanced at that time, called her such a wonderful name. Already at a fairly mature age, when the topic of the meaning of certain names became relevant, the lady was surprised to learn that Lapanalda stands for «Papanin’s camp on an ice floe»!
Yes, the Soviet era was famous for the abundance of non-standard names with a deep meaning. For example, Dazdrasmygda meant «long live the bond between the city and the countryside», Dotnara — «daughter of the working people»…
Girls, do not be sad that you were not lucky enough to be born in the era of great achievements and become Dazdrasmygda. And today you can pick up an unusual name!

A beautiful and rare name for a girl: a difficult choice
When choosing what to name a daughter, one should take into account a number of nuances, because it will become her hallmark in society. Of particular importance is the sonority of the name, compatibility with the patronymic and surname. There is a great temptation to call a girl a beautiful or rare option, but it is worth thinking through everything carefully, such a step has far-reaching consequences.
Representatives of the female half, including the youngest, often strive to look beautiful, stylish, modern in the eyes of others. The name should not contradict the image of «the most charming and attractive.»
An important factor is the prevalence of the chosen variant. If he is currently at the peak of popularity, and all his friends call their daughters the same type, it is worth considering: will the grown lady like it if 5 more girlfriends respond to her name? Remember what a winning position was my friend Lapanalda, surrounded by Valentin and Nin!
Society often forms associations with certain names. For example, Catherines are often perceived as smart, but domineering, tough and wayward persons, thanks to the collective image of Empress Catherine II. Elena is subconsciously associated with Elena the Beautiful.
The choice of name is partly the choice of character. If it is logical for men to be strong, firm, resolute, then the female image is characterized by other features. Decide how you would like to see your daughter: complaisant, feminine, calm, or strong-willed, ambitious, independent, purposeful. It is generally accepted that female names derived from male ones (Valeria, Evgenia, Vasilisa) contribute to the formation of a complex character in their bearers, programming for a difficult life path.
When choosing how to name a girl, it is worth collecting information about the meaning of the option you like. Even if all other criteria are met, it may not be suitable at all. This is especially true for names of ancient or foreign origin.

Old Russian female names
The history of Ancient Russia, full of various events, gave us many unique and beautiful female names, melodic and carrying a deep meaning.
Name and tradition
According to the ancient Slavic tradition, the girl had two names: one for family and one for people. The first option was known only to the closest, it had a deep secret meaning. The second was communicated to everyone, often it was ugly, intended to protect against evil tongues and the evil eye.
Strange, but true: in the old days, the Chinese chose a terrible, sometimes offensive name for a child, considering it a talisman against bad spirits.
Among the Old Slavic variants there are both those having only a Slavic root, as well as modified Greek and Roman ones.
The meaning of many old Russian names consists of two bases:
- Svetozara — bright dawn
- Miroslava — glorious in peace, glorified in peacefulness
- Lubomila — dear and beloved
- Ognevlada — bright, fiery
- Dobronega — very tender
- Domoslava — the one that glorifies the house
- Bryachislava — ringing with glory
- Goodness — one that does good
- Milonega — sweet and gentle
Single root Slavic variants sound no less melodic, feminine and beautiful.
Listen:
- Slavunya — glorifying
- Bereginya — the one that takes on the protection
- Rusaliya — light
- Delight — sweet
- Vesniana — spring
- Zhdana — desired
- Dobrava — good
- Goluba — loving
- Yarena, Yarina, Yarka — bright
- Gorinka — the one that burns
- Milana — sweetheart
Some Slavic names are taken from the world of nature, revered by our ancestors: Yesenia — clear skies, Druda — forest priestess, Hayka — roe deer, goat.
Ukrainian female names are consonant with them, having both Slavic and Western origin. Some of them were borrowed from other peoples and then adapted: Anna became Ganna, Elena became Helena. Originally Ukrainian variants are interesting, for example: Charuna — bewitching, Ulyana — holy.
Expanding the boundaries: not only Russian variants
Russia is a multinational country. Many beautiful ways to name a girl are found among other peoples living in our neighborhood.
Tatar names have a deep meaning and ancient history, some of them have Arabic roots, others have European roots. The cultural tradition of the Tatar people allows you to give the child a completely new name, so from time to time the Tatars themselves figured out how to name the born daughters. Some options have become popular and famous over time.
Please note that most Tatar female names are ambiguous, it is up to you which meaning to follow when choosing.
- Aigul – beautiful as a flower (moon flower)
- Madina — giving strength, lucky, big city
- Zulfiya is a beautiful girl with long curly hair
- Samira — a fruitful tree (giving fruit), the rising sun, the interlocutor
- Leysan — the first warm rain in spring (snow falling in early spring)
- Naila — the one who achieves success (worthy of a gift)
- Farida — precious (most valuable)
Bashkir female names are somewhat similar to Tatar ones. The theme of flowers, beauty, worship of heavenly bodies is clearly traced:
- Aibanu — moon girl
- Lala (Lalya) — tulip
- Latifa is beautiful
- Aisylu — as beautiful as the moon
- Zuhra — light, star, brilliant, flower
- Shamsia — sunny
- Gulnara — decorated with flowers
How to name a newborn is the most important issue for the Buryats, many of them know the names of their ancestors up to the twentieth generation. Buryat names that seemed to me the most beautiful: Altantuya — golden dawn, Sanjima — fiery cleansing, Altana — gold, Legzhin, Sumati — prone to good, Bayarma — joy, Urintuya — gentle dawn, Yanzhai — a wonderful melody.
Bright neighbors
Ideas for beautiful and bright female names can be drawn from peoples living in our neighboring states. For example, Armenia is very interesting in this sense. Local female names are a kind of bridge between history and modernity, because among this people a woman has been and remains a stronghold of purity, morality, care, and warmth.
Listen to how the Armenian names sound:
- Anahit — Mother Goddess
- Narine — wife (woman)
- Nune — the one who keeps the hearth
- Shagane — kind and pious
- Lilith — night
- Gayane — terrestrial
Kazakh names for women are based on beauty, tenderness, grace: Azhargul — beautiful (beautiful), like a flower, Aybiek — a beauty like the Moon, Kuanysh — happiness, Gulnisa - the most beautiful of women, Bibigul — the mistress of flowers, princess, Altyngul — a golden flower, Togzhan — happy with life, wealthy, Zhaina — radiant, beautiful, brilliant, Sholpan — morning star, Venus.
Oriental fairy tale
In the East, it is customary to name a daughter according to established traditions, first of all, beautifully, femininely and tenderly, so that the future husband has the opportunity to enjoy not only the appearance of his wife, but also a name that caresses the ear.
Therefore, all Muslim female variants embody femininity and beauty. If you want your daughter to have such traits, you should study the list of enchanting names of the East that I have proposed:
- Amira — princess
- Bahiya — radiant and beautiful
- Busaina — beautiful in body
- Zahrach — beauty, flower, star
- Manar — luminous
- Maysun — the owner of a beautiful body and face
- Nadira — precious and rare
- Najiya — safe, calm
- Safiya — clean, calm
- Salima — healthy and blameless
- Naima — sweet, noble
- Tahira — chaste and pure
- Fariha — joyful and happy
- Halima — patient and gentle
- Yamha — bird, or dove
At the mention of these bewitching sounds, I personally have a strong association with Turkish delight, Shazrezada, fabulous miracles! Among Muslim ways to name a girl, in my opinion, Turkish ones have a particularly fabulous sound: Gulgun — pink day, Meryem — stubborn, rebellious, rebellious, rebellious, Gülenai — laughing moon, Bingyul — a thousand roses, Belgin — clear, Dilara — beloved.
I don’t want to part with oriental tales, so I urge you to go to distant Japan. Short but sonorous Japanese female names carry a deep philosophical meaning:
- Hina — positive, sunny
- Yuna — graceful, excellent
- Aoi — geranium (mallow)
- Aika — love song
- Kou — peace, light, happiness
- Mi — beauty
- Ran — lily (orchid)
- Chi — wisdom
- Chow — butterfly
- Mitsuko — shining child
- Katsumi — victory of beauty
Lovers of short options live not only in Japan. For example, in one American family from New Orleans, three newborn twin girls were named Mu, Wu and Gu.
Yes, short names have their charm and originality (forgive me, Lapanalda!).
Refinement and style
Perhaps in the future you imagine your little one as a sophisticated Frenchwoman? I advise you to pay attention to popular French names, especially since many of them are derived from variants of Greek origin that are popular in Russia.

- Anetta — grace, mercy
- Nicole — winner of the nations
- Stephanie — wreath (tiara)
- Brigitte is majestic
- Josephine — multiplying
- Noel, Noella — Christmas
- Floretta — small flower
- Chloe — green hunt
No less refined, in my opinion, are Jewish female names. In addition, Israel is not the only place where they are common. Many of them are popular in other countries, including Russia. Many Jewish female names are associated in meaning with precious stones, flowers, emotions.
- Aviva Spring
- Estelle — star, mystery
- Sharon — giving life
- Eve — source of life (live)
- Rebekah — captivating (faithful wife)
- Deborah the bee
- Liora — my light
Tell me, what associations do you have with English women? Rigidity and coldness? I would agree with you if I had not previously studied the meanings of some English female names. Perhaps you will change your mind on this matter!

From Europe we go to America. The American nation is made up of representatives of different peoples, each of which has contributed to the culture and worldview. Therefore, American names are original and sometimes do not sound similar to each other, but they have a unique style, a touch of audacity and love of freedom. Double female names are popular here (written with a hyphen), the first of which is chosen by parents according to their taste, and the second is given as a sign of respect for a relative or just an outstanding personality.
I will not bring to your attention double options, I will focus on the more familiar ones: Alivia — the army of the elf, Elinor — the shepherdess, April — «spring», Blanche — white, Britney — worthy, Lynn (Lyra, Laynsi, Linna, Linzi) — lake , Samantha — God heard (given by God), Ashley — famous, Dorothy (Doris) — funny, Meryl, Marilyn — marine, Jessica — foresight, Claire — clear.
And finally, the strangest (fortunately, very rare) way to name a girl that came to my attention.
On one of the islands of the Hawaiian archipelago, there lives a girl named by her father with a name of 102 letters. In translation, it sounds something like this: «Many beautiful flowers bloom in the mountains and fill all the valleys with a wonderful fragrance.» The school teacher, despite the indignation of the baby’s father, was forced to reduce this text to «Fragrant Flower» — the name simply did not fit into the class magazine! Classmates began to call the girl even simpler — Flower.
Envy, Lapanalda!
We have made such a journey through countries and names! There are a great many unusual and beautiful names for men and women. Do not be lazy, study the information on thematic sites and forums, and do not forget about my blog. Share new knowledge on social networks with friends, as I shared with my friend Lapanalda.
Best regards, Natalia Krasnova.

Curiously, not all of these names are originally English. Many of them were born in other cultures and traditions: Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Celtic, Norman. For example, Irene (Irene) in Greek is “peace, tranquility”, and Deborah (Deborah) is translated from Hebrew as “bee”, Florence (Florence) is “blooming” from Latin.
Then people were often named after the forces of nature and gods, outstanding human qualities, such as courage, nobility, diligence, or in order to emphasize a pleasant appearance: soft hair, grace. Although, it is still curious how fair the female Gwen eventually grows up and how her name in the meaning of «elf» influenced Avery’s fate.
The origin of other names is related to the occupation of its owners.
- Bailey is a sheriff’s deputy or Abella is a shepherdess.
And although it is a little unfair that parents tried to predetermine the child’s profession in this way, nevertheless, in those days there were not so many opportunities and freedom as they are now. And, of course, all with good intentions.
With the advent of Christianity in Europe, the names of biblical characters appeared: Sarah, Agnes, Mary. Some names were formed by shortening from their long form and became independent: Victoria — Vicky, Rebecca — Beck, Becky, Angelina — Ange, Angie.

The most successful names for girls
The success of individuals also affects the popularity of names, perhaps due to the admiration of these individuals or the hope that a child with the same name will be able to achieve high achievements.
Although this is difficult to verify, there is some evidence. For example, Professor Albert Mehrabyan conducted research and wrote the book «The name game: The decision that lasts a lifetime». Children with these names were more successful:

Other enthusiastic experts at The Knowledge Academy analyzed over half a million resumes uploaded to Adzuna’s «Value My Name» tool. And they found that women with the name Lily receive a good salary — an average of 30,821 pounds a year. She is followed by Isabella (28 935 pounds), Ella (28,623 pounds), Amelia (27,645 pounds) and Emily (27,420 pounds).
And there is also a hypothesis that if you add a second name, the success will be even higher. Psychologists Weinand and A.P. Van Tilburg and Eric R. Igu found that people perceive strangers with middle names as smarter, more eloquent, and more skilled than those without them.

The name Eve, which in Hebrew means “giving life”, the first woman on Earth, has become popular again. In Moscow alone, little Eves appeared almost 200 times more than 5 years ago. But most often Russians are now called Sophia, Maria and Anastasia.
None of these names are originally Russian. Mary comes from the Hebrew Miriam, Sophia and Anastasia are Greek. All this is connected with the Baptism of Russia — the introduction of the state religion of Orthodoxy, which came to Russian land from Byzantium.
Old Russian names are pagan. By the way, the ancient Slavs did not like the letter “a” too much, so almost all female names starting with “a” are of foreign origin. Among the ancient Russians, there are especially many names with the root “glory”, that is, glorifying — Boguslav, Yaroslav, Miroslava, and “mila” (dear) — Bogumila, Dobromila, Slavomila. Almost all female pagan names end in -a or -ya, with the exception of Love.
Since ancient times, a woman’s name has had a special meaning — when naming a girl, parents seemed to have to determine her future, «assign» her a mission. The exception is Ancient Rome, where women did not have personal names. At birth, the girl received a family name — Julia (born in the family of Julia), Claudia (accordingly, her father was Claudius). If there were several daughters in the family, they were numbered (ordinal prenomens were added): Julia Segunda (second), Claudia Tertia (third).
Later, when the state religion had already taken its official positions, at baptism the baby began to receive a canonical name, reflected in Christmas time. But for several centuries the baptismal name was kept secret, and pagan was used in everyday life.
Now double names are back in use — by law, a double name can be given to a child if one of the spouses is a “non-resident” (citizen of another country), but in fact any parent can name their child a double name at will. Several names of one person are quite common in many countries. In Russia, only two-component names are still popular. If this is not a combination of a Russian and a foreign name (such as Ekaterina-Jessica), then the most common double name in Russia is Anna-Maria.
