Peeping into Santa’s bag

Children are like children, but their gifts are different: small the American will get an expensive toy, and the Mexican will get a papier-mâché piñata to beat with a bat. What else is given to children in different countries and why — we tell in this material and get inspired by the holiday.

USA

In the US, it is customary to give expensive gifts, as family gatherings are rare. Christmas is the most important occasion for Americans to gather in one place and give each other something valuable and practical.

Every gift in the US is accompanied by a purchase receipt, but not to brag about the value, but so that the gift can be exchanged or returned to the store — suddenly it won’t work. Such a tradition differs from the Russian one — in our country it is considered bad form to show the price. If you have ever washed the glue from the price tag or painted over it with a black marker, you definitely understand what it is about.

England

It’s the other way around here: the British are not used to spending large sums on Christmas gifts — instead they buy inexpensive souvenirs.

In some families, gifts are distributed by lot right at the celebration. At the same time, it is not so much the price of the gift that is important, but the attention to the person. Therefore, children mainly receive key rings, figurines, tea cups, toys and all kinds of accessories for Christmas.

Mexico

In Mexico they love the New Year as much as in Russia: for nine days everyone forgets about work and school and organizes folk festivals. The most common gift given to children here is piñata , a large Mexican papier-mâché toy that resembles an animal, a star, or an ordinary geometric figure. Inside the gift is a surprise in the form of sweets, cookies or crackers. The child is blindfolded and blindly hits a piñata suspended above the floor with a bat. This toy symbolizes the sins that can be got rid of only by breaking it.

India

Despite the absence of snow and other usual Christmas and New Year attributes, Indians are happy to celebrate the New Year in their own way: with lush and long garlands of flowers, paper lanterns in houses and on the streets, generous distribution of sweets to friends and unfamiliar, presenting small homemade gifts: talismans of the year, postcards, caskets and other pleasant little things.

Georgia

«Akhali Tseli» — Georgian New Year — an incredible variety of national traditions. This is the Georgian Santa Claus — Tovlis Babua, the Georgian New Year tree — chichilaki, as well as a symbolic step through the threshold of your Mekvle house — a person who promises you happiness in the new year, and, of course, a rich Georgian New Year’s table. The holiday is not complete without dancing and wine, which flows like a river and is drunk from a wide variety of glasses, horns and earthenware vessels. But the most sacred thing is the singing on New Year’s Eve «Mravalzhamier» — a traditional Georgian drinking song, which is performed in polyphony.

Tovlis Babua (“Snow Grandfather”) brings gifts to children in a large bag decorated with bells, which is always full of churchkhela, gozinaki, sweets and various dried fruits. The Georgian Santa Claus does not have a granddaughter.

Traditional Christmas tree — chichilaki — a small snow-white tree made of hazel branches, decorated with sweets and berries. After the holidays, the tree is burned and the ashes are scattered to the wind to get rid of the troubles and hardships of the past year.

Australia

At midnight, church bells and chiming clocks announce the arrival of the New Year. Celebrations on the streets start as early as 9 pm, so that even the youngest children can enjoy the fireworks and the atmosphere of magic before their parents send them to bed.

In Australia, there is a Santa who appears in a very original way: on a surfboard, dressed in a bathing suit, but with a beard and in a cap familiar to everyone. He has a colleague named Sveg Men — a funny little man who moves in a chariot, accompanied by a Dingo dog. It is customary for both to leave sweets and milk for the night.

Australians give their loved ones whatever they want, and a receipt is usually attached to the gift so that the person can return the gift to the store if they don’t like it. Children are usually given sweets and toys. There is also a wonderful tradition here — to send paper postcards to friends, colleagues and relatives.

9000 0 what gifts Journey to Christmas guests give to children from new regions / News / Moscow City Web Site

Charity

Press Service of the Committee for Public Relations and Youth Policy of the City of Moscow

The festival has already collected five thousand gifts for residents of new regions and participants of the NWO.

More than five thousand New Year’s gifts have already been collected as part of the «Moscow Helps» campaign at the «Journey to Christmas» festival. Natalya Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, spoke about this. Citizens and tourists bring sweet treats and toys for children from new regions of Russia, as well as warm clothes for participants in a special military operation (SVO).

The festival opened in the capital on December 23rd. There are 25 gift acceptance points on its sites, for example, they are on Tverskaya Square, Novy Arbat, on the territory between Revolution Square and Manezhnaya Square, on Matveevskaya, Mitinskaya and Veshnyakovskaya streets, on Koptevsky Boulevard and in the square near Golyanovskiy Pond.

“During the first days, festival visitors brought more than five thousand gifts. Children are most often given toys, books and sweet souvenirs, while servicemen receive gloves, thermal underwear, hats and scarves. Thanks to the residents, hundreds of kilograms of sweets, chocolate and cookies, board games and New Year decorations have been collected,” said Natalia Sergunina.

In addition to the festival venues, Moscow Helps points operate every day in parks, on Vorobyovy Gory, the Northern River Station and VDNKh. Gift-giving chalets will remain open until January 8, 2023.

The Moscow Helps New Year campaign has been held since December 1. It brought together more than a thousand volunteers and tens of thousands of residents and guests of the capital — young people, families with children, older people. As Natalya Sergunina clarified, 70,000 gifts have already been collected in less than a month. At the end of last week, the first part of them was sent to new regions.

From Muscovites with love: heartfelt gifts

Muscovite Maria Bogoslovskaya, together with her husband, gave gifts three times to the point opened in Tagansky Park. She combines her career with good deeds and helping her beloved city and people. The girl is the founder of women’s media, a blogger, marketer and teacher.

“It is very convenient that the gift collection point is in the center of the city, next to the skating rink in the park, where we constantly walk. It’s great that you can do a good deed close to our home. It seems to me that collection points in parks are very convenient: you go for a walk and you can immediately bring gifts, ”said Maria Bogoslovskaya.

For children, she and her husband choose domestic sweets. And the couple is going to hand over sets of thermal underwear, thermal socks and gloves to the defenders in the near future.

“We pack all sets in a New Year’s gift bag and give postcards to each defender. I signed each card myself. The text is different everywhere — from the heart, with wishes and congratulations. And it turns out a real gift, very personal. It warms the soul that one of our heroes will open it and get at least a drop of New Year’s mood. I really want to support and warm you with warmth, to convey to each of our defenders that we are with them, we are waiting for home with a victory! It comes from the heart, otherwise our family cannot,” shared Maria Bogoslovskaya.

Help with deeds and gifts: an action through the eyes of a volunteer

Ksenia Lisina is an IT project manager and a volunteer at the New Year’s gift collection point in Gorky Park.

“When to share kindness and help believe in a miracle, if not on New Year’s Eve? Our beautiful chalets with Christmas trees create a festive mood among Muscovites, and the things they donate will bring smiles to children and participants of the NWO. I myself decided to bring something tasty and bought several sweet sets for the kids. We need to help with all our might, we have a unique opportunity to create an atmosphere of kindness and miracles for those who need it now,” said Ksenia Lisina.

Participation in volunteer projects for Ksenia is an opportunity to do good, to help people. The experience of a Muscovite inspired her son to also take part in the action. She told him about a student volunteer with whom she went to work.

“I was very pleased and pleasantly surprised that the guys are all so open, able to sympathize and help. When you give something for nothing, you get much more in return: gratitude, warmth and the feeling that your participation is really needed.
