Top 100 Baby Names for the 1990s

The top 100 baby names from the decade of grunge music, broad based economic prosperity, and the mass-market adoption of technology.

The 1990s were a very distinctive time for many reasons. The decade was marked by the appearance of grunge music, vast technological improvements and a general sense of economic prosperity.

With bright colors and a vibrant popular culture, it is not surprising that the most popular names from the 1990s were just as distinctive as the decade itself.

Popular 1990s Girl Names Influenced by Hollywood

If you are looking to adopt baby names from the 1990s for your future child, you should be aware that the most popular girls names were often drawn from popular culture. The decade that saw the rise of Brittney Spears, Rachel Green, Jennifer Aniston, Stephanie Tanner and Courtney Cox also saw those first names as popular choices for baby girls.

Women who grew up on “Sweet Valley High” books were also having their own children during this decade, and that definitely influenced the popularity of Jessica and Elizabeth as popular 1990s girl names.

Traditional 1990s Baby Names for Girls

Although popular culture did play a huge role in providing names for little girls born in the 1990s, other parents chose more traditional names for their children. Names such as Ashley, Emily, Sarah, Samantha and Hannah all saw a resurgence in popularity during the 1990s.

1990s Boy Names Inspired by Popular Culture

As was the case with little girls, parents of little boys often took inspiration from popular culture when naming their children. The decade gave us Brandon Walsh, Joey Lawrence, Justin Timberlake and Matthew Perry.

Each of these first names enjoyed tremendous popularity as 1990s baby names.

Traditional 1990s Boy Names

Names such as Christopher, Joshua, Andrew and Daniel were popular 1990s names. But no playground during the 1990s would have seemed complete without at least one Tyler, Ryan or Zachary. These were among the most popular baby names from the 90s.

Maria, Danny and Courtney — would you give you bub a name that was a big hit in the ’90s?

      by

      Bounty Team

      | 11 September 2020

Netflix is currently awash with brilliant ’90s comedies – with The Fresh Prince, Absolutely Fabulous, Friends and The League of Gentlemen all streaming. While at the same time, the high street is flooded with ’90s style slip dresses, mules, scrunchies and denim jackets, so it makes perfect sense that it’s that decade which is currently influencing parents-to-be.

According to the pregnancy and parenting website Baby Centre, names that were ubiquitous in the decade that gave us both grunge and Tamagotchi are due a comeback, as new parents are feeling nostalgic for the nineties.

Topping the list of girl’s names is Maria – almost definitely inspired by Blondie’s song of the same name which was released at the tail-end of the decade in 1999.

Next up is Courtney, in honour, we assume, of either Cox or Love, depending on whether the parent in question is either a Friends or a Hole fan. At third place is Helen, which given that the world’s highest grossing weather-based-film and huge box-office smash-hit Twister was released in 1996, it’s more than likely that Helen Hunt in the inspiration behind that one.

After Maria, the name Courtney comes in second mostly likely because of Courteney Cox’s role in classic sitcom Friends.

Meanwhile for baby boys, the most popular name is reported to be Bradley – could be inspired by Fight Club star Pitt? At second place is Daniel, which we can only assume is because millennial parents are still kind of into singer Natasha Bedingfield’s big brother. Next up is Ryan, which might be popular due to the fact that Ryan Reynolds – of being Blake Lively’s husband and you know, acting fame – guest-starred in everyone’s favourite 90s TV programme, Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

While hanging out at number 19 is Ross, another Friends reference, as new parents name their babies after television’s hottest paleontologist with anger management issues, Ross Geller.

Bradley tops the list of nineties boys’ names possibly thanks to Brad Pitt who starred in ’90s hit Fight Club.

The Most Popular Baby Names by Decade | Local News

Trends constantly go in and out of style, and names are no exception. Thanks to popular culture, a name can be an indicator of the era a person was born — arguably now more so than ever. Of course, many classic names stand the test of time, so it’s up to you whether you want a timeless or more current option for your baby.

The genealogy experts at MooseRoots used data from the Social Security Administration to find the five most popular boys’ and girls’ names per decade from the 2000’s all the way back to the 1880’s. You can use this data to choose a name for your little one that will never go out of style.

The list is filled with classic favorites that have spanned generations, allowing you to see how much the times have changed — and in many cases the degree to which things have stayed very much the same. Enjoy a little history lesson by browsing the top names by decade to see if any sound right for the new addition to your family.

In the topic of «revolutionary» or «red» names, there was a bust….

Russian journalists have paid so much attention to these names in recent years that readers have the impression that they were widespread and widespread in the past. Meanwhile, the frequency of such names, even in the years of the «heyday» of this innovation, was very insignificant.

We, having checked the statistics of the registry office, discovered an amazing fact: many popular names in the 90s have become almost unclaimed now.

In 2014 and 2015, Alexander, Maxim, Artem, Mikhail, Daniil and Ivan became the most popular names for boys, and Sofia (Sofya), Maria, Anna, Anastasia and Victoria among girls. Also, such old-fashioned names as Timofey and Matvey, Yaroslav and Fedor, Mark and Leo, as well as Arina and Veronika, Eva and Vasilisa, Taisiya and Varvara have come into fashion.
