I’m pregnant with my second and really struggling for boys names. Our first child has a more unusual name, along the lines of Otis, Rowan, Archer etc.
I need a similar idea for child two, starting with c or a would be ideal. Easily shortened to one syllable. A bit more unusual because DH is a teacher so wants a special name, not one he associates with other children.
Does such a name exist? Please help!

What do you mean by unusual? Rowan and Otis are both popular at the moment, so is it more names which you didn’t go to school with, but currently a bit trendy? These are all out of the top 200, and some are trendier than others.

I really liked Gabriel (Gabe) and Ambrose but they might be pushing the boundaries of weirdness a bit.

My daughter has a name that I have never, ever heard of on anyone else so I do like weird names.

Thanks everyone. Like a walk down memory lane, so many names I toyed with for my first but were vetoed by my husband haha.
In answer, ds name is more on the unusual side, not in top 100, like a few of the more obscure names people have suggested, my examples weren’t the best(although a few were from previously vetoed list haha)
Just to complicate matters, I’d like a Celtic name.
Impossible task I know haha!

11 uncommon and unusual boy names

Uncommon baby names can be tough to find – since, well, they’re uncommon. If you’re looking for a baby name that’s unusual and maybe even a little weird, here are some of our favorites. Gathered from hundreds of thousands of parents who’ve shared their baby’s names with us, these names were given to just a handful of babies. With one of these uncommon names, you can rest assured that your child won’t be one of many in class or on the playground.

Ajax

Ajax is a name from Greek mythology: It appears in Homer’s Iliad, an epic poem set during the Trojan War. Ajax is a hero described as being strong and brave and is sometimes referred to as «Ajax the Great.» It’s thought to mean «one who laments,» though other stories say it means «eagle.»

Chauncey

The origins of the name Chauncey are up for debate: It could mean chancellor, which is derived from a Latin word for a government employee. It could also be an old-fashioned version of Chance, meaning «luck.» While Chauncey was last popular in the 1800s and early 1900s, this baby name may be making a comeback thanks to basketball coach Chauncey Billups and football player Chauncey «C. J.» Gardner-Johnson.

Cornelius

Cornelius is thought to derive from the Latin word for horn, but this name has a far broader meaning in history. In the Bible, Cornelius is said to be a Roman centurion who was the first non-Jewish person to convert to Christianity. In the 19th century, Cornelius Vanderbilt was an American business magnate who expanded and improved upon the country’s transportation infrastructure. Cornelius «Neeley» Nolan is the protagonist’s younger brother in the novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn; Cornelius Agrippa is a celebrated German wizard in the Harry Potter series; and Shakespeare used the name for characters in his plays Hamlet and Cymbeline.

Darwin

Darwin is of Old English origin and means «dear friend.» Most famously, it’s the last name of Charles Darwin, who contributed the theory of natural selection to evolutionary sciences. If you like the sound of Darwin but want something less scientific, Edwin, Erwin, and Darin all have a similar vibe.

Dex

Dex is a simple yet strong name reminiscent of Dexter, a Latin name meaning «of the right hand.» As an English name, however, Dexter is an occupational surname for a person who dyed clothes for a living. You’re unlikely to meet anyone named Dex, though you may come across a Dax or a Knox.

Francois

Francois is the French version of the English name Francis, and means «free.» Notable people include two French presidents: Francois Mitterrand and Francois Hollande, who’s known for legalizing same-sex marriage. Though the name is more common in French-speaking cultures, Francois is an unusual choice in the United States.

Golden

Golden symbolizes honesty and authenticity. Give your baby an extra glow with this dazzling color name. Award-winning actress Golden Brooks has brought attention to the name, as has the song «Golden» by Harry Styles. Variations include Gold, Goldie, and Golda.

Holland

Holland has steadily climbed the charts since the ’90s, entering the top 1,000 baby names in the U. S. in 2014, though it’s still rare relative to other European place names like London and Paris. Holland, meaning «wooded land» in Dutch, is a region within the Netherlands – though Holland is sometimes used to refer to the whole country.

Lake

Surprisingly rare, Lake follows the flow of water names such as Bay, Ocean, River, and Brook. It comes from the Latin word lacus, meaning, somewhat plainly, «inland body of water.» But this placid, nature-inspired name conjures serenity, wildness, and life simplified.

Rebel

Rebel is a gutsy, modern baby name that suits boys and girls equally. Australian comedic actress Rebel Wilson has brought new attention to the name. Robert Rodriguez, an American filmmaker who directed the Sin City and Spy Kids films, named his son Rebel. If you want your kid to have the edgiest name on the playground, Rebel is a good pick.

Zen

Are you hoping for a chill baby? Consider Zen, which is a school of Buddhism that originated in China. The word itself is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese transliteration for the Sanskrit word for meditation. Zen Buddhism emphasizes meditation, intuition, and altruism.

The father of a teenager with numbers instead of a name refused to issue him a passport

Fourteen years ago, a boy was born in Moscow, about whom everyone immediately learned. The father of the child is a great original, and he came up with an unusual name for his son — BOC rVF 260602. The news about this spread instantly, the baby, who at that time was only a few days old, became popularly known. But the registry office refused to register a new person with that name, the court upheld this decision. For many years, dad unsuccessfully tried to achieve his goal — thanks to the participation of journalists, the whole country followed this story. BOC recently turned 14 years old. The age when it is time to get a passport instead of a birth certificate. Anticipating the difficulties, «MK» decided to help the family in obtaining the most important identity card in Russia. Still, the boy has an adult life ahead of him, how is it without a passport?

Apparently, a 14-year-old boy will have to live with this document.

Photo: Natalia Muschinkina

— Passport of a citizen of Russia for BOC? Who needs him?! — Muscovite Vyacheslav Voronin greeted the offer of help with hostility. — This is such bullshit that can only matter to idiots!

That’s the turn. Our initiative not only did not find support from the protagonist, but also caused a storm of indignation. It turned out that for many years of fighting the system, Vyacheslav managed to hate it and change his attitude to the legal documentation provided for in our country. After realizing that he could not see a birth certificate in the name of BOC rVF 260602, the man chose a different path: he issued a birth certificate and a “citizen of the world” passport for his son. For $50 each. So what if these documents have no legal force anywhere except for four countries: — Mauritania, Tanzania, Togo and Ecuador? This was enough for Vyacheslav. He also ordered a genetic passport for his son. Everywhere is the name of the boy, which his parents came up with. With this set of documents, BOCH (as his relatives and friends call him for short), oddly enough, was accepted into the school. The officials responsible for the process admitted then that a boy without education would bring more problems to society than a student who was enrolled in an institution with a passport of a citizen of the world.

— Don’t you understand that a passport is just a travel document? — Vyacheslav gets excited. — In all countries, they treat him the same way! And we have Russian schizophrenia, some idiots from the registry office decide that they write you in the book of life! But after all legally you, — here is precisely you! You are not even human! Nowhere in your passport is it written that you are a person. Think about it! And this is reflected in the BOC documents.

Let us recall the summary of the previous series: Vyacheslav named his son that way for a reason, he came up with a name based on the fact that it was individualized and that no one in the world was called the same. Indeed, the Biological Object of the Human of the Voronin-Frolov family, born on June 26, 2002, has not yet met the namesake. The employees of the registry office begged the parents in the name of common sense to write down their son at least as “Boch” (the first letter is large, the next two are small). But Vyacheslav angrily rejected attempts to find a compromise. He despises people with common names. Although he himself did not change his official name to an exclusive one.

— I have a friend Sergei, I argue with him all the time, — says Vyacheslav. — I say: how many people with the same name as yours? A million and a half! You are a faceless creature. I don’t want my son to be like this. Some idiot said that I need a Russian passport, what do I need from this? BOC will live without it.

— He may not need him now, but the boy is growing, he will soon enter the university. After all, sooner or later he may want to get married.

— Since when do you need a passport for this?

— To register a relationship with the registry office. Are you not married to your wife?

— Am I an idiot or what? I don’t need a certificate to sleep with my wife. We live together, and that’s enough. And BOC will not study at a Russian university.

— But you yourself have a passport! Why do you decide for your son that he does not need him?

— I have, yes. .. Lying somewhere in the corner. I don’t use them at all.

However, at the end of the conversation, Vyacheslav admitted that he did not want to bother with a passport also so that his son would not be taken into the army. No passport — no agenda. And yet, a little changed anger to mercy.

— All right, if they come to us and say: “Sign here and we will give BOC a passport”, then I will not refuse to receive it. But I’m not going to do it myself. Do I need it? It’s the asshole official who has to run around and serve me.

We nevertheless ran — instead of an official — and sent requests to the authorities to find out how BOC could get a passport. The standard set of documents for submission includes a Birth Certificate of the Russian Federation, which, we recall, the boy does not have. Maybe over the past years the rules have changed in the registry offices and now the teenager will be given a document, regardless of the strange name? Unfortunately no. According to the press secretary of the Moscow Registry Office Evgenia Smirnova, the name of the child still cannot consist of abbreviations and numbers, of which Voronin Jr. has plenty. Employees of the registry office, as before, offer to record the boy under the name «Boch». His dad now even seems to agree to this option, but he does not want to go through the authorities on his own. A disappointing answer also came from the former Federal Migration Service: “If it is impossible to provide a birth certificate, a passport can be issued on the basis of other documents confirming the information necessary to obtain a passport. The provision of a public service for issuing a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation on the basis of a “passport of a citizen of the world”, an “international birth certificate” and a “genetic passport” is not provided for by the legislation of the Russian Federation. So live, BOC, and go on without a passport, since dad decided so.

Weirdest names in the world, invented by imaginative parents

The world around usPhotos, Motivators, Collections

All parents want their child to be special and stand out at least a little from the crowd, so there were always people who gave their children non-standard names, which certainly made their child more noticeable. Of course, not all children have to be Vanya and Masha, but some parents still go too far in coming up with a name. In many countries, lists of forbidden names have even begun to appear, with which you cannot legally name a child. And this is not a severe restriction, but a necessary measure, as you will see for sure by reading this post.

BOC rVF 260602

Perhaps the most striking example of an unusual name is a boy from Moscow. The family gave their son an alphanumeric code instead of a name — BOC rVF 260602. It stands for — a biological object of a person of the Voronin-Frolov family, born on June 26, 2002. That’s who really managed to surprise the well-worn employees of the registry office. Now the boy is 15 years old, and he received a passport of a citizen of the world.

Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116

Name of a Swedish boy born at 1991, — Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116. It seems that dad just fell asleep on the keyboard, choosing a name for his son. Parents were denied registration. It is interesting to note that the child was originally named Albin, but the parents refused to register him until 1996, for which they paid a fine of five thousand crowns ($750). Then they asked permission to give their son a name consisting of 43 letters and numbers. The court, however, refused to register the name as obviously ridiculous.

That’s what a restaurant owner in Honolulu called his daughter. When the girl went to school, her name could not be entered in the class magazine. In Russian, this means: «Numerous beautiful flowers of mountains and valleys begin to fill Hawaii in length and width with their fragrance.»

Meningitis and Appendicitis

The Jackson family of Chicago has five children: Meningitis, Laryngitis, Appendicitis, Peritonitis and Tonsillitis. I would like to believe that these five brothers are doing better with health than with names.

Dynasty 1792

For a long time there was a dynasty in France that did not have a surname, it was replaced by a set of numbers 1792. To be completely original, they decided to name their sons by the months of the year. The most popular names for boys in this family were: January 1792, March 1792 and April 1792. By the way, the last of the masculine family of this dynasty, Mr March 1791, died in 1904.

Captain Fantastic Faster Than Superman, Spiderman, Batman, Wolverine, Hulk and The Flash Combined

A British teenager named George Garratt once decided to change his name on his own. He did it with an internet service for just £10. Now his name is «Captain Fantastic Faster Than Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Wolverine, Hulk and The Flash Combined» and he thinks the name is cool. After this incident, the guy’s grandmother stopped talking to him, and this is not surprising.
