Yes, I also think that cartoons are not the best thing to give to children. But I am a realist. And I prefer to choose the lesser of evils. And therefore, I present to you a list of cartoon series with which you can leave your child alone without fear, and at the same time I will mention those with which you should not do this.

There is a lot of debate about the benefits and harms of cartoons for children. I noted the following for myself:

Pros

• Mom can do housework without the child hanging on her leg and whining.
• This is an effective means of encouraging, distracting and punishing (with their deprivation) the child.
• It’s better you show him good cartoons than he himself will get to don’t understand what.

Cons

• The child sits at the screen without moving, often without blinking.
• It’s easy to get hooked on cartoons, addiction develops.
• Parents/grandmothers/nannies are very tempted to «neutralize the child» in an easy way.

To summarize, I think that cartoons are still needed, but strictly dosed and preferably correct. The wrong child will still see someday, but by then he will most likely have developed some taste and critical thinking.

1. The cartoon should be kind and promote the right life values.
2. His characters should be good, but not perfect — real, alive, not without flaws. This is necessary so that the child, who is also imperfect, does not feel guilty for his weaknesses.
3. The cartoon should be useful. To give the child new knowledge, to teach something.
4. It must be of high quality — beautiful drawings, normal voice acting.
5. It’s good if it’s not a mass cartoon whose characters are on every shelf of a toy store, on the covers of notebooks, clothes, etc. The right cartoons will not hook a child into endless desire/consumption of commercial products, just because it depicts a favorite hero.
6. The cartoon should not be specifically «boyish» or «girlish», psychologists are against such a division of the sexes at this age.

1. Little Einsteins. The first season

The undisputed leader of my hit parade. Episodes of 20-25 minutes, available in Russian and Romanian.

Why do I, as a mother, adore him? Firstly, it is voiced by real children’s voices, and not by grimacing aunts. Secondly, classical music sounds in each episode, with paintings by great artists in the background. The child is instilled with a taste and respect for real works of art. Thirdly, in the process of completing tasks, the heroes learn a lot of cognitive things — what are volcanoes, Egyptian pyramids, which tree is the tallest in the world . .. Fourthly, the characters of the cartoon are kind, sympathetic, but they are still ordinary children — who love to make noise, even misbehave sometimes — and not ideal zombies. Fifthly, the cartoon gives children the right attitudes in life — that your favorite activity in life makes you happy, that each of us is unique and talented, that friends and, in general, all living beings on earth should support each other.

As a side effect, my son learned a lot of musical terms that he uses in real life. You should have seen our grandfather’s eyes when his grandson told him — grandfather, I’m tired of going allegro, let’s have a little adagio, and then, when we rest — crescendo!

2. Robot Robik

Another very cute cartoon series, available only in Russian. The plot is a company of cute robots, in order to solve any difficulty that has arisen, they go to the corresponding planet. To the planet of dancing — to choose a dance, to the planet of keys to find the key for the clockwork mouse, etc.

This cartoon teaches children to think logically, look for solutions to problems, and be a team. Like the previous animated series, it shows that each of us is talented and unique, that it is easier to solve problems in a team.

3. «Franklin and his friends»

Franklin the turtle lives in the forest, communicates with friends, parents, neighbors. He is an ordinary child — sometimes he is arrogant, sometimes he quarrels with a friend. But he is very kind and sweet.

This cartoon was obviously developed by psychologists, because common childhood problems are played and solved in it — how to learn to part with your mother, how to overcome your shyness and fear of something new, and even what happens if your parents divorced. Another great Canadian-Australian animated series. This is a cartoon about 3 good friends whose ringleader is a zebra named Zigby. Each time a new adventure awaits them. The cartoon teaches children to take care of their friends, admit their mistakes, accept others as they are. The cartoon is kind, funny, contains many educational elements.

5 good but not ideal

Next, I will list cartoons that are generally not bad, they can be shown to children, but still, I personally have some complaints about them.

1. «Jarmis»

An English cartoon about 5 stars that live in the sky at night and come down to earth during the day to watch ordinary children and have fun themselves. The cartoon is kind, promotes the right values. I am confused by the quality of the animation in it — some very clumsy drawings (maybe this was done on purpose for a better perception by the kids?). In addition, it is suitable for a maximum of 4 years old, it will be boring for older children.

2. «Learn by playing», «Miracle Animals» or «Mega Minimals»

Spanish cartoon about animals that go to kindergarten. A very good cartoon for kids who are just getting ready to join their first children’s team. The cartoon shows that the kindergarten is fun, the teachers are kind, and moms and dads always come back for their children.

I give this cartoon a minus only for technology — for some reason, all animals have square heads and squeaky voices.

3. «Mickey Mouse Club»

Unlike the «old» Mickey Mouse, this cartoon is more beautiful, educational and kinder. Children love him very much. But I don’t like the following — too colorful picture and too many details; repulsive voices of heroes; The characters are somewhat ambiguous, sometimes strange.

4. «Luntik»

Russian cartoon about the life of an alien guest in the world of terrestrial insects. The cartoon looks good at first glance. But. Firstly, Luntik himself is too, unbelievably kind. Some psychologists believe that this cartoon can bring up a victim complex in ordinary children. Where any normal child would get angry — Luntik is sweet and submissive.

Secondly, I would strongly argue about the cuteness of the characters — although they are cartoonish, they are still 8-legged spiders, mustachioed beetles with claws, and so on. I personally don’t like to look at this, and my child doesn’t like it either.

5. «Chugginton» and «Charlotte Strawberry»

These are very good cartoon series, but they are designed for children of a certain gender. There are many such cartoons now — boys have heroes — cars, trains, builders. Girls have ballerinas, princesses, strawberries and more. All of them are mostly cute and funny, but still psychologists say that such cartoons are undesirable for young children. They prematurely separate them by gender, teach them to group only “with their own”, while a preschool child does not need all these divisions, it is important for him to play and communicate with peers of both sexes.

5 bad cartoons

Of course there are more. But I will try to go through the most fashionable ones.

1. «Masha and the Bear»

Excessively bright, fast flickering, noisy cartoon for children under 5 years old. I definitely noticed that after watching it, my child is too excited, jumping, waving his arms, «furious.» Perhaps inert, lethargic children will benefit from the cartoon, but hyperactive and just smart ones — it is strictly contraindicated.

2. Smeshariki

A very interesting cartoon, often with subtle humor. But it’s more for adults. If we talk about children, it is completely incomprehensible at what age it is designed. The characters are rather controversial — the only girl is exposed as an imaginary and capricious. Well, plus, for the age of 3-5 years there is too much noise and chaos.

3. «Tom and Jerry» and other «Wooddies»

American cartoons «chasing-each-other-in-the-head-pounding» amuse children, but they do not carry any useful information to them. They do not teach sympathy, but on the contrary, they show that it is a lot of fun when someone’s tail is crushed, an eye is gouged out, and so on. Definitely — in the furnace.

4. “Well, wait a minute!”, “Prostokvashino”, etc.

For some reason, there is an opinion among many parents that Soviet cartoons are the best and kindest. I periodically watch the channel «Childhood» and undertake to assert that this is not so. «Wait for it!» — the same head-scratcher as «Tom and Jerry». Leopold the Cat is a little better, but from the same opera. «Prostokvashino» is generally a cartoon for adults!!! Mom in it is exposed as an eternally dissatisfied selfish person who thinks about dresses more than about a child. And the cat and the dog quarrel like elderly spouses.

Many cartoons are frankly intimidating. Not to mention the fact that, most often, the quality of the picture and voice acting is hopelessly outdated.
So let the word «Soviet» for you not be a synonym for the word «good» in relation to cartoons. Strictly and meticulously select them before showing the child.

5. Horror stories, squabbles, swearing.

Popular cartoons often contain too much negative information for children aged 3-5. «DuckTales», «Chip and Dale», «Spider Man», all sorts of robots, transformers are replete with scary episodes and frightening characters. Leave them for school age.

Many, especially «girlish» cartoons show squabbles, envy, rivalry between children. Even if in the end the positive hero turns out to be right, all this creates in the child the feeling that the world is full of ill-wishers who need to prove something.

There are also quite a few cartoons that teach children to swear, call names and other undesirable turns of speech.
