Mark Knight’s cartoon on kids going back to school after COVID-19 learning from home

Reading level: green

The coronavirus lockdown saw some states and territories in Australia close schools.

Students would be home schooled using classes over the internet. Parents who were working from home due to social distancing suddenly became teachers as well. Remote learning turned dining room tables and kitchen benches into classrooms. Mums and Dads were trying explain quadratic equations* or why the feuding* Montague and Capulet families in Romeo and Juliet were at war with each other.

I’m a political cartoonist but a lot of my cartoons during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic were about human behaviour. Observations on how we were coping and adjusting to our “new world”: living in quarantine, social distancing, some of us losing our jobs, doing Zoom meetings, home schooling and not being able to go out!

Even our pets at home noticed the change. We were around more, we didn’t go out and when we did we dragged the dog with us for a walk so we wouldn’t get arrested!

It wasn’t all bad. We got really good at doing TikToks and some of us got our highest scores ever playing Call of Duty on PlayStation.

So when the news came that state governments were going to relax restrictions and students would return to schools I thought I should draw a cartoon on the subject.

I decided that I would look at the topic, not from the students’ point of view, but from the point of view of others in the household. I could look at it from the parents’ side, the relief of not having to explain Pythagoras* anymore. Parents jumping for joy maybe?

But I like my cartoons to have a bit more of a twist than the obvious. There would be others in the house who would be even more relieved to see you guys get back on the school bus! But who, I hear you ask?!

I started drawing my cartoon with the view of a household’s dinner table covered in school project paper waste, glues, paints, calculators, textbooks. The cartoon continues as we look across from the mess to the open front door where a mother is standing, happily waving goodbye. Then I drew the front window, through which we can see her three children in uniform with their school bags heading out the front gate on their way to school.

Mark Knight’s cartoon.

Okay, so at this point I’ve drawn a nice picture of kids heading back to school but what’s so funny about that? I haven’t added the punchline, that being the furry feline* creature who before Covid ruled the home and would lie peacefully on the couch all day in peace and quiet. The family cat. Its world ruined by the stay-at-home policy.

So in the cartoon you will notice I have drawn discreetly* in the foreground the family marmalade* moggy*. It’s doing cartwheels. Excited at the prospect that the home will be his to rule again!

A lot of my cartoons are based on life experiences. While writing this piece my 16-year-old daughter in Year 10 came into my home office and said that she needed help with her history essay on World War I. She needed it done before her maths class on Zoom started. So I had to stop writing this and go and help her. We don’t work well together, we argue, she wants my help but won’t accept my ideas and then her computer glitches* and we lost all the work we’d done and had to start again. Home schooling can’t end soon enough.

About that cat in my cartoon. It’s me!

GLOSSARY

PBS cartoon presents ‘climate change superheroes’ to kids, schools

A new PBS animated series about six children who transform into superhuman eco-warriors will air in public schools this fall as part of an effort to relieve climate change anxiety among America’s youth.

The producers of “MeteoHeroes” announced Wednesday that educational video company Adventure 2 Learning has agreed to distribute the show to 15 million children for in-school broadcasts in more than 30,000 schools in all 50 states during the upcoming academic year.

The multimillion-dollar series follows the adventures of six children who transform into climate change superheroes representing different continents and natural elements with power over the weather to fight ecological disasters.

A total of 52 seven-minute episodes will be produced for U.S. schools in addition to 26 half-hour shows for PBS as the academic year begins, according to showrunner Kenn Viselman.

“Kids are dealing with two pandemics right now, COVID and the fear that the earth isn’t going to be there when they grow up,” Mr. Viselman told The Washington Times. “This series shows they can save the world.”

Mr. Viselman, a former producer of the hit PBS show “Teletubbies” who also worked on “Thomas the Tank Engine,” has worked on more than 50 children’s television shows.

But none has sold more quickly than “MeteoHeroes,” he said. He noted that the show, which has a target audience of 4- to 10-year-olds, is airing in 145 countries.

And Sony PlayStation released a MeteoHeroes video game based on the series earlier this year.

“Whether you believe in climate change or not, you have to believe your kids are experiencing anxiety about it. This show gives them encouragement and hope of a happier future,” Mr. Viselman said.

Plans for the franchise’s expansion include a live-action feature film and an “extensive environmentally responsible merchandising program” that will include action figures, toys and an age-graded curriculum to help kids reduce single-use plastics and other environmental hazards.

But the producer said the show’s 30-minute pilot, which premiered overseas on Earth Day last year, didn’t reach PBS affiliates and the PBS Video app until this year’s April 22 holiday.

That’s because the creators chose not to air it in the U.S. during Donald Trump’s presidency, Mr. Viselman said.

“We didn’t want the show to become a political football,” he said. “I don’t think climate change should be a controversial subject matter.”

The series arrives in the U.S. amid reports that anxiety about climate change — the scientific theory that changes in weather patterns indicate a threat to the Earth’s existence — is rising among children.

The Oregon Health Authority last week released a “Climate Change and Youth Mental Health” report that said escalating wildfires, heat waves, droughts and air contamination have contributed to increased “climate anxiety” among the state’s young people.

Conservatives say progressives have stoked sadness, anger and fear among children with doomsday theories about ecological disasters destroying the planet.

“Parents shouldn’t be shocked that people pushing an agenda are exploiting children’s entertainment to do so. History is full of examples of kids’ malleable minds being targeted by those in power,” said Connor Boyack, creator of the “Tuttle Twins” conservative children’s book franchise.

The author said Wednesday that his books, which Angel Studios adapted into a popular children’s animated series, “help kids understand the world and embrace the ideas of a free society” rather than present liberal policies as solutions to the planet’s problems.

“Our work is a counteragent to the social engineering seen in projects like ‘MeteoHereos’ that spread fear and self-loathing,” said Mr. Boyack, who serves as president of the free-market Libertas Institute in Utah.

Author Lucas Miles, pastor of Nfluence Church in South Bend, Indiana, criticized “MeteoHeroes” as another effort by progressives to “groom” children to “love socialism, globalism, and to hate capitalism.”

“While its producer calls it age-appropriate and celebrates its ability to transform children’s environmental fears, this couldn’t be further from the truth,” Mr. Miles said.

Some PBS affiliates said the series, which is produced independently, is sure to be a hit with viewers.

“It’s part of our mission to provide programming for children that helps them understand the world around them, and MeteoHeroes is a series that can help them see their part in protecting the environment and understanding some of the bigger issues that we as adults are discussing,” said David Lowe, president and general manager of PBS’ KVIE-TV member station in Sacramento.

Lillian Vasquez, executive producer at PBS’ KVCR-TV station in San Bernardino, is confident the show will educate children and families “in an entertaining and meaningful way.

The 9 Best Cartoon Shows for Kids Learning French

Prospective in-person students: please read our Covid safety protocol

MORE INFO

March 24, 2021

How good is your langage enfantin (French baby talk)? Do you know what dodo, doudou, and nounours mean?

If the answer is no, don’t worry! We’ve finally put together a list of the best French cartoons to help you or your child build essential vocabulary skills. Below, you’ll find our 9 favorite shows, along with a longer list of cartoons for kids of all ages.

And, in case you missed it, here’s our latest article about the best French movies and TV shows to stream in 2021!

By Sophia Millman

Most Iconic: Les Aventures de Tintin

Quick-witted Belgian reporter Tintin and his adorable sidekick, Milou (“Snowy” in English), travel the world, solving mysteries and getting into all sorts of trouble with their friends–an irascible sea captain and a nutty professor. What we love about this series is that it’s a very faithful adaptation of the Tintin comic books. If you or your child are a fan of the original bande dessinee, the series won’t disappoint! Watch all of the episodes on YouTube for free here

Cult Classic: Les Shadoks

With absurd mottos like, “Every advantage has its disadvantages, and vice versa,” the Shadoks shocked the French when they first appeared on screen in 1968. French artist Jacques Rouxel wanted to create a new, absurdist cartoon and thus invented these hilarious bird-like creatures. Two of our favorite Shadok maxims that are often referenced in French popular culture are: « Je pompe, donc je suis » (“I pump therefore I am”) and « Pour qu’il y ait le moins de mécontents possible, il faut toujours taper sur les mêmes » (“To reduce the number of unhappy people, always beat up the same individuals”). Learn more about the history of the cartoon here and watch the whole first season on YouTube here

Great for Tweens: Titeuf

The series was incredibly popular in France, but is little known in other countries. It’s about a ten-year-old boy (Titeuf), who’s in love with a girl called Nadia. Throughout the show, Titeuf tries to understand the mysteries of life, girls and, of course, the art of seduction. Titeuf’s catch phrases include “Tchô !” and “C’est pô juste” (“It’s not fair”). This series is a great way to pick up French slang. Find all Titeuf episodes on YouTube here

Funniest: Les Schtroumpfs

This children’s series follows the adventures of Les Schtroumpfs (or the Smurfs, as English-speakers call them), little blue creatures who live in a peaceful village and have to fight the evil wizard Gargamel. Watch the series on YouTube here!

Based on a Classic Book: Les Malheurs de Sophie

We wrote about Les Malheurs de Sophie in our post about the best French children’s books. The series, based on the book, is set in a chateau during the Second French Empire. The protagonist Sophie is a naughty and highly adventurous girl who’s always getting into trouble, despite help from her friends Camille and Madeleine and her cousin Paul. You can watch the trailer for the 2016 film adaptation of Les Malheurs de Sophiehere. Watch the TV show on YouTube here

Sweetest Series: Babar

Based on Jean de Brunhoff and Laurent de Brunhoff’s famous books, this series is about an elephant who becomes king. In the first two seasons, we learn about young Babar’s adventures, and, in the later seasons, we watch Babar’s kids and their friends grow up. Learn more about the history and popularity of Babar by reading this France Culture article. Watch the show on YouTube here

So 1970s: Barbapapa

Franco-American couple Annette Tison and Talus Taylor came up with the idea for “Barbapapa” in 1970 while walking in the Luxembourg Gardens. Talus Taylor overheard a child asking his parents for something called “baa baa baa baa.” Later in the day, the couple went to a restaurant and drew a character on their paper tablecloth who was pink and round. Barbapapa was born. Tilson and Taylor first wrote books about les Barbapapas, which were adapted into a hit TV series that aired throughout the 1970s. It’s about the adventures of Barbapapa, Barbamama, and their seven children: Barbalala the musician, Barbibul the inventor, Barbidou the animal lover, Barbotine the intellectual… The funny and colorful characters have the ability to transform themselves into different objects. Buy the Barbapapa book collection here and check out the show’s official YouTube channel here

Great for Little Ones: Petit Ours Brun

Petit Ours Brun (Little Brown Bear) consists of 100 episodes, each 2 minutes long. The show is based on the popular toddler book series created by Danièle Bour, who first published a story about the little bear in the French kids’ magazine Pomme d’Api. Watch all of the episodes on YouTube here

Classic Edutainment: Il était une fois…

If you grew up in the US during the ‘80s or ‘90s, you probably remember watching fun educational cartoon shows like The Magic School Bus. If you grew up in France during this time, your knowledge of the human body, space, and history probably stems from Il était une fois…, arguably the best edutainment ever made. There are seven different series and we recommend that anyone interested in learning French watch them! Check out the show’s official YouTube channel here

Bonus (What to Look Forward To): Astérix

Recently, we published an article that’s all about the Astérix comics and movies. So, we were super excited to learn that popular French actor and comedian Alain Chabat has teamed up with Netflix to make a new animated Astérix TV show! Read a French newspaper article about the new show here

Other series we recommend (click on the title to watch them):

  • Les Belles Histoires du père Castor: Great for kids 4 and up. Père Castor (Father Beaver) tells stories to his adorable three children, Câline, Grignote and Benjamin.
  • Caillou: Great for toddlers. In each episode, Caillou (Little Pebble) and his sister go on an adventure: they go to school, go camping, go swimming etc.
  • Caroline et ses amis: Perfect for young children. Based on the classic book series
  • Corneil et Bernie: Talking dog Corneil and his best friend Bernie go on adventures.
  • Les Contes de la rue Broca: A fantastic series based on one of our favorite French books!
  • Didou: A great choice for young kids who love to draw.
  • Lucky Luke: Cowboy Lucky Luke and his horse Jolly Jumper run into famous bandits like the Dalton Brothers, Billy the Kid, and Jesse James.
  • Les Monsieur Madame: Based on the Mr. Men and Little Miss books. A great way to pick up French adjectives!
  • Martin Matin: Nine-year-old boy Martin wakes up every morning to find himself transformed into a different being: a wizard, a pharaoh, a caveman, a vampire, a superhero…
  • Spirou: Another popular Belgian series that’s great for kids who love Tintin!
  • T’choupi: Another sweet series aimed at toddlers that resembles Petit Ours Brun.
  • Les Zinzins de l’espace: Five aliens accidentally land on Earth and have to hide in an attic while trying to figure out how to get home.

Quiz «Music in the world of cartoons»

Most of us love cartoons, and this feeling does not depend on age. The love for cartoons begins at a young age and many people keep it throughout their lives. What is the secret of such constancy?

Cartoons are kind, funny, touching stories that are sometimes filled with mystery and magic.

They are understandable to absolutely anyone and have fascinating stories close to every heart. The special charm of this genre is given by music, which can be found not only in modern composers, but also in classics. Such familiar and

close to many melodies that captivate the audience from the first sounds — this only enhances the emotional impact of the cartoons. Sometimes, classical compositions fit so organically into the plot that it seems as if they were specially written for him, so subtly and clearly they convey the thoughts, feelings of the characters and the general atmosphere. There is no secret about it — it’s just the amazing power of music.

Carefully study the information about the cartoons and those who wrote the music for them!

The main character of all presented cartoons is music, it plays a very important role in the development of the plot. Beautiful melodies, dressed in visible images, sound throughout the whole action. Music from cartoons is brought to the child in an understandable, accessible form, thus becoming native to him.

Classical music is heard in many cartoons and animated series, and sometimes inexperienced viewers do not even realize that this is a classic. In most cases, she serves only as an auxiliary background for the main action, but can also be the main character or play a particularly important role in the development of the plot.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky — Russian composer, teacher, conductor. The music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is known all over the world. His works are filled with amazing beauty and melody. He gained his world fame thanks to the legendary operas and ballets, but he created no less beautiful masterpieces for children.

P.I. Tchaikovsky

The Nutcracker cartoon was a masterpiece of Soviet animation using classical music. It was filmed based on the fairy tale by Ernst Hoffmann and Tchaikovsky’s ballet.

1. «The Nutcracker»

There is not a single word in the cartoon «The Nutcracker», and the whole plot is based on music. Here, a Christmas fairy tale is harmoniously combined with classical music. Not a single New Year’s holiday is complete without this fabulous story.

The Nutcracker is a funny little man who cracks nuts with his toy teeth. It was brought as a gift to children among other toys for the New Year.

Pyotr Ilyich embodies the theme already known to him in the ballet — overcoming hostile forces thanks to the power of love. It is interesting to observe how expressiveness and figurativeness, vivid theatricality and the deepest psychologism are combined here. The composer did his best to make the music very subtly convey everything that happens on the stage: drumming, fanfares or the squeak of mice.

Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev is a Russian and Soviet composer.

S.S. Prokofiev

2. «PETER AND THE WOLF»

«Peter and the Wolf» is another piece of music that became the impetus for creating the cartoon. In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev wrote the symphonic fairy tale «Peter and the Wolf», so the composer decided to introduce children to the variety of instruments of the symphony orchestra. Each hero of this story is represented by a certain instrument, including a flute, clarinet, bassoon, oboe and others. The story tells about the boy Petya, who saves his friends from a wolf, while showing courage and ingenuity.

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky is an innovator of the 19th century, a brilliant composer who was far ahead of his time and had a huge impact on the development of Russian and European musical art.

MP Mussorgsky

The cartoon «Pictures at an Exhibition» is presented by the music of Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky performed by the virtuoso pianist Svyatoslav Richter. Pictures from the exhibition come to life in this animated film and take young viewers into a fabulous and mysterious forest. The main character of the cartoon is a little girl who was not afraid of Baba Yaga, she passed all the tests, and in the final she saw a cheerful dance of chickens. The cartoon features two plays by the famous composer.

3.1 «HUT ON CHICKEN LEGS»

Hut on chicken legs (Baba Yaga). A powerful dynamic image of Baba Yaga, filled with «demonic» dissonances. At first, several rare chords-jolts sound, then they become more frequent, imitating the “run-up”, from which the “flight in the mortar” begins. Sound «blots» depict negligence and «dirt» in the image of Baba Yaga. Unevenly spaced accents imitate the lame gait of the «bone leg». Against the background of these sounds, a simple and furious melody “takes off”, played with full chords, as if sweeping away everything in its path.

3.2 UNHATCHED BALLET

Unhatched Chick Ballet. Light and cheerful schercino (joke), comical and slightly chaotic dance of chicks. The melodic line is wittily combined with bird chirping and with the image of light and clumsy bouncing and flapping.

Dmitry Dmitrievich Shostakovich — Soviet composer, pianist, musical and public figure, doctor of art history, teacher, professor.

D.D. Shostakovich

4. «DANCES OF THE DOLLS»

«Dancing of the Dolls» is a story about a little sick girl who was decided to support and entertain the dolls. This story is told in the animated film of the same name «Dance of the Dolls». This gentle cartoon is accompanied by the brilliant music of the great composer Dmitri Shostakovich.

This truly puppet waltz makes the viewer feel the graceful movement of the toys and feel the fullness of a light, magical mood.

In addition to classical works, animated films often use modern music with a song genre.

Evgeny Pavlovich Krylatov — Soviet and Russian composer. In total, over the years of his creative activity, he created a large number of compositions in various genres: symphonic, chamber, pop music, music for drama theater, radio and television. But his work in cinema is especially fruitful.

E.P. Krylatov

5. WINTER IN PROSTOKVASHINO

Winter in Prostokvashino (1984) — the third cartoon from the trilogy about Prostokvashino, about a city boy nicknamed Uncle Fyodor, a homeless cat Matroskin, a dog Sharik and others who, for various reasons, began to live in the village of Prostokvashino .

The cartoon was created based on the novel by Eduard Uspensky «Uncle Fyodor, the dog and the cat». It was E.P. Krylatov made the composers of this cartoon.

What is 3D animation? These are images of three-dimensional objects using three-dimensional graphics. Images cease to be flat, come to life.

Undoubtedly, children love to watch cartoons. But to make a cartoon yourself is incredible! I mean, incredibly interesting! Bring your children to classes at the children’s animation studio, here they will be helped to realize their creative ideas!

Classes in the animation studio are held 2 times a week. Choose convenient days and join such an exciting creative process!

The main material for making cartoons is plasticine. First, children come up with cartoon stories and characters of their cartoons — plasticine images. It takes several classes — you need to learn how to sculpt from plasticine! Then the camera is set up on the editing table, the lighting is set, and the guys shoot the cartoon, making their characters move and transform in accordance with the script. After painstaking filming, the process of editing the footage begins and after a while a real cartoon appears, the authors of which are small directors.

In addition, in the animation studio they work not only with plasticine characters, but also use other techniques for shooting animated videos — transfer technique, puppet animation, product photography, etc. Address: Shabolovskaya metro station, 2 Maly Kaluzhsky lane, bld. Kartoon School of Animation provides its students with the opportunity to master skills in the visual arts. The main thing is to give the best not only from Russian, but also from world animation. That is why the school actively cooperates with foreign studios and educational institutions, and also attracts professionals from abroad as teachers.

Learning is based on an individual approach, so each child is interviewed to find out exactly what skills he wants to acquire and what goals to achieve in the learning process. Graduates of the courses receive an official certificate of education, and their successful work is shown in a block of the Libélula International Animation Festival, which takes place every autumn in Barcelona.

Animators must be able to draw. But if the child’s drawing is tight, don’t worry! Classes in classical drawing are obligatory and take place from the beginning to the end of the training course. Under the guidance of experienced teachers, the child will be able to start drawing even from scratch.
