If Avatar: The Last Airbender was the height of American TV cartoon storytelling in the 2000s, Samurai Jack was the height of American TV cartoon artistry. The plots were simple and archetypal, but the animation, sound design, and directing, were consistently mind-blowing.

All of Genndy Tartakovsky’s many cinematic influences — from Akira Kurosawa and Sergio Leone to Akira and Blade Runner — combined to make Samurai Jack something special. It trusted young viewers with stillness and contemplation before rewarding them with the craziest action on TV. A recent fifth season, aimed at adults who grew up with the original, gave the series a darker but satisfying conclusion.

18 Invader ZIM (2001-2006)

It might’ve only lasted but 27 episodes (six of which didn’t air on TV until years later), but Invader ZIM‘s cult following kept it in the public eye long enough to inspire a comic and a movie revival. The show held up amazingly well and proved worth the hype.

17 Justice League Unlimited (2004-2006)

Bruce Timm’s cartoons have generally been recognized of the best DC superhero adaptations around. Some even hold them to be better than most live-action versions. His innovative ’90s Batman: The Animated Series received most of the acclaim, but Justice League Unlimited showcased Timm’s talents on the grandest scale. The show used and nailed almost every DC hero in history, telling great stories in a range of tones. It even contained the only Alan Moore-approved adaptation.

16 Teen Titans (2003-2006)

Teen Titans is one show 2000s kids just won’t stop raving about — and for good reasons. Often used as the standard Teen Titans Go! and the «edgy» live-action Titans show are compared to, Teen Titans has five seasons and a sixth has been rumored.

Whether it comes back or not, there’s good reason Teen Titans stayed strong in the memories of younger millennials. It was one of the better American responses to the anime boom, with tons of action, humor, and heart. Of course, the J-pop opening theme by PUFFY (AmiYumi) was a solid tune.

15 Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends (2004-2009)

The Powerpuff Girls was still Craig McCracken’s greatest success, but his second show, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, managed to do pretty well for itself, running for six seasons. From the title alone, one could tell there was something special about the show. A comedy about abandoned imaginary friends living together was an irresistible premise.

Foster’s was one of the first TV cartoons animated in Flash, and it’s still one of the show’s best adapted to digital animation technology. The design work on this show was gorgeous. Blooregard Q. Kazoo was striking evidence of how great animators could take the simplest design and imbue it with a vibrant, hilarious personality.

14 Megas XLR (2004-2005)

Perhaps the most cult-like of Cartoon Network shows, Megas XLR, was only on the channel from 2004 to early 2005, but those who watched it remembered it. At a time when almost every action cartoon was trying to adapt the anime style, MEGAS XLR stood out — having clear love and knowledge of anime but filtering it all through a very American sensibility.

For viewers who’ve ever pondered the question, «What would Guy Fieri do with a giant robot?» MEGAS XLR is just the show for them. While that isn’t a demographic big enough to make the show a hit, this cartoon has the sort of absurdity where those who get it, love it.

13 Kim Possible (2002-2007)

There’s no contest: Kim Possible was the best show on Disney Channel in the 2000s. Their live-action sitcoms didn’t hold up outside a nostalgia trip, and many cartoons were pretty forgettable. Kim Possible, however, held up surprisingly well.

Witty, exciting, and proudly feminist, Kim Possible took a sledgehammer to the outdated notions that girls wouldn’t watch action shows and that boys wouldn’t watch shows with female leads. My Life as a Teenage Robot is one of the best Nicktoons forgotten during the era of the sponge. XJ-9, or «Jenny» — a super-robot trying to live a normal life between fighting villains — made for a strong protagonist, and the show’s retro-futuristic art style was always cool.

8 Whatever Happened To… Robot Jones? (2002-2004)

This show’s title was seemingly a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whatever Happened To… Robot Jones? pretty much fell off the face of the earth despite being a fun cartoon with a groovy Schoolhouse Rock-inspired style. It’s a 2000s kids show that even ’70s kids could dig.

The first season was especially funny, with Robot Jones being voiced by an actual computer. Someone, it seems, wasn’t a fan of the robot voice and not only recast season two, but re-dubbed season one with a human kid playing the title role, which killed some of its charm.

7 The Grim Adventures Of Billy & Mandy (2001-2007)

6 Seasons, 77 Episodes

One of the darkest and strangest Cartoon Network shows centered around an angry girl and a dimwitted boy who tricked the Grim Reaper into being their best friend. The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy started off as a segment on the Grim and Evil show, but as the Evil Con Carne shorts weren’t as good, it made sense to give Billy & Mandy its own series.

Horror fans had a lot to enjoy in this cartoon. Everything from Greek mythology and the Cthulhu mythos to Suspiria and Dune was fair game for this show’s irreverent parody. This hyperactive, sometimes mean-spirited show wasn’t for everyone, but for those who vibed with it, it was six seasons of hilarity.

6 Codename: Kids Next Door (2002-2008)

6 Seasons, 78 Episodes

Codename: Kids Next Door is a child’s dream come true: an organization of children who fight against adult tyranny. Criminals such as homework-wielding teachers and vegetable-loving senior citizens never went unpunished, as «numbahed» operatives worked tirelessly to defend kids worldwide.

Codename: Kids Next Door lasted for only six years but gained almost overnight attention from viewers. The concept was both original and hilariously relatable to 2000s kids, Additionally, the world-building and diverse character list was phenomenal.

5 The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-2009)

2 Seasons, 26 Episodes

Marvel might dominate the cinema, but in the world of cartoons, it always played second-fiddle to DC’s creations. Their ’90s cartoons didn’t have the production value of Batman: TAS or Superman: TAS, and the current Disney XD offerings typically had a critical response of «okay» at best. Still, there’s at least one Marvel cartoon that continued to have dedicated fans.

One of the last shows to air on the Kids WB block, The Spectacular Spider-Man was the best-animated version of the classic web-slinger hero. It was a well-written show — developed and produced by Gargoyles‘ Greg Weisman — that was planned for a five-season arc. Due to rights issues between Sony and Disney, it only lasted two years.

4 Fillmore! (2002-2004)

2 Seasons, 26 Episodes

One of the big changes in 2000s animation was the slow death of Saturday morning cartoons. While at the turn of the century Disney was still making original programming for One Saturday Morning on ABC, when the block got rebranded as ABC Kids, it became mainly a dumping ground for Disney Channel reruns before dying in 2011.

The final original cartoon to air on ABC on Saturday mornings, Fillmore!, was at least a good one. It was another school-based show like a many One Saturday Morning shows, but with a creative twist — treating the adventures of a couple of hall monitors like a ’70s cop show. They even got Don LaFontaine as the announcer.

3 The Fairly OddParents (2001-2017)

10 Seasons, 172 Episodes

The Fairly OddParents ran for 15 years and 10 seasons. Unfortunately, most of the series was forgettable, jumping the tracks early on and continually getting worse. What 2000s kids will remember is the first four seasons when the show was actually good.

Back when it started, Fairly OddParents was hip and clever, finding new and funny ways to play off the basic «wish gone wrong» formula. Pretty much everything up until the movie Channel Chasers —which easily could’ve worked as a series finale — was solid. After that, the show became annoying and pretty much ignorable.

2 Homestar Runner (2000-2022)

The epitome of millennial nostalgia about the «old internet,» Homestar Runner arrived in the right place at the right time. Coming at a point where online videos had advanced beyond just dancing baby GIFs, but before corporate titans like Netflix dominated streaming, Homestar Runner was perhaps the greatest independent web cartoon of all time.

The content is wholesome for kids while strange and smart enough for adults. The site still occasionally updates to this day and is doing a Kickstarter for a Trogdor game.

1 The Marvelous Misadventures Of Flapjack (2008-2010)

3 Seasons, 46 Episodes

Those looking for the missing link between the cartoons of the 2000s and those of the current decade need look no further than The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. The wacky, and sometimes gross, adventures of two pirates and a whale searching for the legendary Candied Mountain serve as a testing ground for many of the artists who’d go on to define the cartoons of the 2000s.

Storyboard artists on Flapjack included Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward, Gravity Falls‘ Alex Hirsch, and Over the Garden Wall‘s Patrick McHale. J.G. Quintel, the creator of Regular Show, was one of the show’s creative directors. At a time of uncertainty for Cartoon Network, Flapjack would set the course for the surreal, artist-driven, 11-minute episode future of animation.

Screen time may get a bad rap, but savvy parents know it’s not really the screens that matter — it’s what kids are doing on them. When it’s time to put on the TV, make the most of the downtime by making sure you’re watching the best TV shows for kids out there — for both their sake and yours, since better shows will keep them engaged and entertained for longer, and will keep you saner, too. (No, you don’t have to default to that sing-songy show with the round-headed family that’s always in the Netflix top 10 if you don’t want to!)

But, with the proliferation of streaming services, there’s just so much out there for kids, and it’s always available. (I often regale my daughter with horror stories about how, if the school bus didn’t get me home in time to watch DuckTales that day, that was it — no DuckTales. She remains unmoved by my plight.) So you’ve decided to watch a children’s cartoon to improve your English. That’s a great idea! Here’s why:

Voice actors on cartoons enunciate clearly. That means they pronounce their words well so that everyone can understand them.

Many children’s cartoons focus on social interactions, so you can hear some real world conversations and phrases.

Children’s cartoons use words that are simple enough for low level English learners to understand, but also throw in plenty of challenging new words for more advanced learners.

If you’re watching a show for very young children, these shows are often repetitive—they repeat words, phrases and even whole sentence structures.

They’re usually short, about 20 minutes long. Sometimes each episode is split into two halves of 10 minutes each.

“Martha Speaks”

What it is: “Martha Speaks” is a show about a dog that learns how to speak after eating some alphabet soup. This show is meant for teaching new words, and each episode has vocabulary words explained before and after the episode. These words are used multiple times during the episode so you won’t ever forget them.

The best thing about “Martha Speaks,” though, is how clever it is. This show does not “dumb down” its content just because it’s for kids. Instead, it’s really funny to watch. Even the opening credits are silly!

2. Cartoon Clips on FluentU

What it is: FluentU is a language learning program that uses short video clips from authentic content to teach English. This includes movie trailers, news segments and, of course, children’s cartoons.

Videos are usually small segments from full shows, but you can sometimes watch entire episodes conveniently split up into bite-sized parts. Every video you watch has accurate, interactive subtitles and a transcript, so you can read along as you watch. You can check word meanings and save vocabulary for later study right from the video player.

There are many different cartoons to choose from, like cartoon re-tellings of well-known fairy tales, clips from shows like WonderGrove Kids, Pocoyo and Peppa Pig and much more.

3. “Word Girl”

What it is: “Word Girl” is another show that teaches vocabulary words. In this show, a girl superhero fights bad guys through the power of words. The episodes are drawn in a very unique style and they explain new English vocabulary words as they use them. 4. “Doki”

What it is: It’s expedition time! An expedition is a voyage or a journey, and Doki and his friends go on one every episode. Doki and his team explore different parts of the world and learn about new cultures and words associated with them. This is a fun cartoon if you want to learn about not just new words, but also new cultures.

5. “Postcards From Buster”

What it is: If you enjoy learning about cultures and traveling but don’t like the style of “Doki,” you might enjoy “Postcards From Buster” instead. This show stars Buster, the bunny from another kid’s show called “Arthur.” “Arthur” is mostly about social interactions and friendship, but Buster’s show is about his travels around the world with his father.

“Postcards From Buster” has an interesting style that mixes cartoons with videos of real people, as you can see in this episode preview. It’s a nice way to see some cartoons and real people talking.

6. “Adventure Time”

What it is: “Adventure Time” is a very strange show. It’s the kind of show where, as they say, “you either love it or you hate it.” It’s an energetic cartoon about a young boy and his very stretchy dog, who go on adventures in a magical land together, fight monsters and learn the importance of friendship.

“Adventure Time” is one of those “layered” shows—sometimes it doesn’t feel like a kid’s show. It also has some made-up words, so watch out for those! Otherwise it’s a great fantasy show with natural dialogue that can go from normal to weird in seconds.

7. “Regular Show”

What it is: “Regular Show” is another show that feels more like it’s supposed to be for adults. This cartoon is about human-like animals and other assorted characters who work in a park and get into all kinds of bad situations, usually because of their laziness.

Like “Adventure Time,” “Regular Show” is a little strange, and has some jokes that kids wouldn’t get (understand). Unlike “Adventure Time,” this show has very dry humor. If “Adventure Time” isn’t for you, this one might be!

8. “Dexter’s Laboratory”

What it is: Dexter is a boy genius with a secret laboratory where he invents all kinds of amazing technologies. If his sister Dee Dee doesn’t destroy them all first! This show is a bit older than the others, but it’s just as funny and charming today.

“Dexter’s Lab” doesn’t teach words but Dexter is extremely smart and he talks like it, using bigger and more complicated words (and a German accent!).

9. “Phineas and Ferb”

What it is: Phineas and Ferb are half brothers who are having one crazy summer adventure. Every episode follows the same formula, so it’s easy to keep up with, and it repeats a lot of the same phrases and words. Sometimes they even break into song!

Phineas and Ferb are always doing creative and scientific things that people tell them they shouldn’t do because they’re too young. It’s a good reminder that you can do anything if you try hard enough—a good thing to remember when you’re learning English!

10. “Inspector Gadget”

What it is: “Inspector Gadget” is clumsy and terrible at his job as a secret agent, but he’s also a robot so it’s not really his fault. This old cartoon has really fun animations and silly moments. This show has a lot of action!

Netflix brought “Inspector Gadget” back in an exclusive remake available only through a Netflix subscription. It’s just as much fun and silliness as the older version, and even throws in a lot of pop culture references—a must watch if you have Netflix Instant.

11. “Teen Titans” or “Young Justice” (and Other Superhero Shows)

What it is: You probably know Batman and Superman, but what about the smaller superheroes like Robin? There are a few shows that focus on younger, teenage superheroes—like “Teen Titans” or “Young Justice.”

These shows are full of action and are perfect if you prefer your cartoons a bit darker (especially “Young Justice”). There are lots of bad guys fighting and trying to destroy the world, but there are also everyday problems and themes like friendships and relationships. Thanks to that, the dialogue is very natural and easy to learn from.

12. “Avatar: The Last Airbender”

What it is: “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is a fantastic anime. Anime is a type of cartoon that’s made in Japan, and it usually has a very recognizable style: huge eyes, not too many details in the face and crazy colored hair. Of course, not all anime looks like this, and “Avatar” is one of those anime shows that looks wonderful even if you’re not a fan of anime.

Avatar tells an epic story about a divided nation at war and a young boy who has the power to stop the fighting and bring peace to the land. It’s a wonderful show that’s loved by both kids and adults, and it has lots of conversations and plenty of action—and some silly moments, of course. Best of all, it has an interesting story that will keep you wanting to watch more.

13. “The Wild Thornberrys”

What it is: Eliza is a normal 12 year old girl who can speak to animals. This is a pretty nice trick to know when your parents film nature documentaries, but it’s tough for her since she has to keep it a secret. She gets into some crazy situations with her family. Did we mention her best friend is a chimpanzee?

25 cool cartoons that you need to watch with children (if you haven’t already)

We are adding one more to the list of the best cartoons of all times and peoples, which is compiled according to international ratings. Users of the Russian service «KinoPoisk» also like to rate — on a scale from 1 to 10 points. Here are 25 cartoons that they liked the most.

1. The Lion King (1994)

Rating — 8.7/10

Two Oscars, three Grammys, three Golden Globes, and just world recognition — a cartoon whose plot hardly needs to be re-told . Let’s just name a few names: Simba, Mufasa and Timon with Pumbaa. When you review with a child (or suddenly watch for the first time), pay attention to the soundtrack. The creators borrowed gloomy fragments of the musical theme from Mozart’s Requiem. And Rafiki’s song «Thank you very much, eat a banana» is a children’s rhyme from Africa.

2. Balto (1995)

Score — 8.3/10

A cute and kind cartoon about friendship and devotion, which, no worse than The Lion King, can pity even an adult. The main character is a young wolfdog persecuted by everyone (this is a cross between a wolf and a Siberian husky). The plot of the cartoon is based on real events: in 1925, the brave sled dog Balto really delivered anti-diphtheria serum and saved the children of the town of Noma in Alaska.

3. Zootopia (2016)

Score — 8.3/10

Zootopia is a city inhabited by animals. But unusual animals: they live a very human life. They have jobs, families, ideals. And they, like people, face racism and stereotypes. For example, the rabbit Judy Hopps has been dreaming of becoming a police officer since childhood, where there is usually no place for cowardly ears. But if you want something, no stereotypes can stop you.

This is the third Disney cartoon to feature only anthropomorphic animals. And the character of Nick Wilde is completely copied from the Disney Robin Hood from the cartoon of the same name — was also a fox (oops, minor spoiler).

4. WALL E (2008)

Score — 8.3/10

People completely littered the planet and left it in search of a new home. There are only sorting robots that clean the Earth. WALL-E is one of them. But not like them: he keeps interesting things for himself, watches movies and learns to feel. By the way, this is the first Pixar cartoon in which real actors were shot (in order to properly convey the character of the animated characters).

5. Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Score — 8. 2/10

Kind and beautiful love story, Disney classic. Most likely, you know the plot of the cartoon: for the sake of her father, the beautiful Belle agrees to become a prisoner in an enchanted castle. There she falls in love with the prince, who was turned into a terrible Beast for his bad temper, and thereby saves him. By the way, this is the first cartoon that was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Picture nomination.

And now about the sad (or funny) — in the cartoon there are a lot of mistakes. For example, when Gaston tries to kiss Belle, she opens the door, causing Gaston to fall into the mud. But the beauty’s front door opens onto the porch, and it’s completely clean there. And Belle sometimes mysteriously disappears her apron and lowers her raised hood. Probably from the wind.

6. The Little Mermaid (1989)

Rating — 8.2/10

Another love story — this time the mermaid Ariel, the daughter of the king of the underwater world Triton, and the earthly prince Eric. By the way, at the time of its release, this cartoon held the record for animation effects: 1000 different colors, 1100 backgrounds and more than one million drawings — this is not a joke to you (in 1989). Oh, and one more thing: the full name of the crab is Horatio Thelonious Ignatius Crustatious Sebastian. Can you remember?

7. How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

Rating — 8.2/10

The inhabitants of Berk Island, the Vikings, are often attacked by dragons. They kill livestock and spoil crops. All the forces of people are aimed at exterminating the enemies. Little Hiccup, the son of a local leader, also dreams of becoming a warrior and protecting his native farm. But when one of the rarest dragons, a Night Fury named Toothless, appears in his life, everything changes.

If you watch, listen carefully to some phrases: children are unlikely to notice them, but you — will certainly. In the cartoon, Stoick says something like “Damn things don’t give up yet!”, “Drive us home, devil!”, “The abysses of hell will open!”, although such concepts did not exist among pagan Vikings at all.

8. The Fox and the Dog (1981)

Score — 8.1/10

A touching story about Todd the fox and Copper the puppy. From childhood, they grew up together on the same farm — and were friends, despite the fact that they should have been at enmity. But one day the childhood friendship came to an end: one of the comrades woke up the hunting instinct. And here’s a cool fact that you probably haven’t heard about: one of the animators of movie — future director Tim Burton.

9. The Lady and the Tramp (1955)

Rating — 8.1/10

Another cartoon that can be called a Disney classic. She is — the cocker spaniel Lady, spoiled by her owners. He is — yard dog Tramp. But it is in each other that they find what each of them lacked so much. Yes, pay attention to the songs in the cartoon. Jazz singer Peggy Lee, one of the scorers for Lady and the Tramp, later accused Disney of breach of contract. And 36 years later, at 1991, managed to sue the studio for 2. 3 million dollars.

10. Treasure Island (1988)

Score — 8.1/10

Even if you haven’t watched or read Treasure Island, you definitely heard some phrases from there. «Okay, let’s try to save this three times useless life» and «What a good boy» — is from him. According to the plot, the schooner «Hispaniola» goes to the southern seas to find treasures hidden by Captain Flint on one of the islands. Two animation teams worked on Treasure Island. One used the classic hand-drawn animation method (this is when the artist draws a mirror image of the character), and the second used the “flat puppet method”. As a result, Silver alternately lacks either his left leg or his right.

Before getting close to the pirates of Robert Louis Stevenson, Ukrainian cartoonist David Cherkassky staged The Adventures of Captain Vrungel. But if in «Vrungel» the characters only sailed on the real sea, then in «Treasure Island» the director combined live actors (the Odessa ensemble «Grotesque») with animation. In general, everything that Cherkassky did at the Kievnauchfilm studio carried an innovative connotation and features of total animation: he imitated the paranormalization characteristic of feature films and painted the sounds of “boom!” on the screen. and «bang!», rather characteristic of comics. His «Treasure Island» is beautiful because it violates all conventional frameworks — and looks like pure hooliganism. At the end of the 2000s, by the way, his remake was announced under the title «Pirates of Treasure Island», on which Cherkassky himself was supposed to work, but due to the financial crisis of 2008, work on it was suspended.

However, if we accept as a fact that «Anastasia» is not a historical reconstruction, but «a fairy tale against the backdrop of real Russian events», then it becomes obvious that this cartoon can still amaze both with animation (the rotoscoping method was used to create characters) and and famously twisted plot — well, in general, complaining about the lack of a decent national representation in a children’s cartoon is somehow not comme il faut.
