Marie, Sophie and Maria are the most popular female names in Germany. Among other names, Anna, Leoni, Lena and Emily are still considered popular. It should be noted that the names Marie and Maria in Germany are not the same thing.
Name ranking in Germany: changes and stability
However, there are still some changes. The name Johan has become more common. Now it is fixed on the 8th place in the ranking of the most common female names in Germany. Laura moved up one line compared to last year and now occupies 9th place, while Leia dropped to 10th place.
Germans prefer to call boys Leons, Maximilians and Alexanders. Alexander, who remained at the top of the list for two years, gave up his positions and switched places with Leon, who took 3rd place. Leon’s name already topped the rankings in 2001. Maximilian is still in second place.
Lukas, Paul and Luka remained in their previous positions, from fourth to sixth. Tim jumped to 7th place from ninth, David jumped to 9th from tenth. Felix remained in 8th place. Only one new name made it into the top ten this year. This is Elias.
Many names have already been forgotten
Such results were shown by a study conducted by the German Language Society. The survey was conducted in 180 newborn registration departments of city halls of various German cities.
In Germany, the fashion for names is changing very slowly, experts explain. For example, Alexander and Maximilian have been the hottest names for nearly a decade now. Many names are forgotten. Popular at 19Stefanie, Nicole and Christine in the 70s and Andreas, Markus and Michael are not even in the top 25 on the list today. Increasingly, parents name their children Amelie, Charlotte, Emma, Hannah and Louise, as well as Fin, Jacob, Louis, Noah and Simone.

The idea is very interesting, but the list itself contains many errors.
In general, I have been asked more than once how to write (or translate) this or that name in Japanese. And this puzzled me, because in Japanese there are a huge number of ways to translate a European name into Japanese.
The first way is a simple phonetic transfer of the name. To do this, you can use katakana, or a more sophisticated way to write ateji phonetically. (There are certain kanji that, before the advent of Japanese alphabets, phonetically denoted certain syllables of kana, since they had the same on-reading. These ateji are still found in proper names. Kanu, composed of such kanji, was called man’yogana, and later from it the modern katakana and hiragana alphabets have grown.)
The second method is more complex and time-consuming, but also more interesting. This is a translation of the name according to the meaning and perhaps even a search for the corresponding name in the meaning in Japanese. After all, hieroglyphic writing allows us to convey the semantic meaning of words, regardless of the language. Perhaps this is what attracts many of them. This is exactly what the translator tried to do in such a list. However, great difficulties arise here, due to the fact that the history of European and Japanese names, their cultural background are very different. Some of our names cannot be found equivalent in Japanese, as they are associated with Christianity, which was not originally in Japan, or denote concepts that would hardly become components of Japanese female names. On the other hand, Japanese and European names have similarities: they convey auspicious meanings, which makes it easier to find equivalent names in Japanese.
In addition, for a Russian, unlike a Japanese, the meaning of many Russian names is not immediately obvious upon reading, since they came from other languages - Latin, Greek, etc. In contrast, Japanese names, especially female ones, are transparent to native speakers language and go back to proper Japanese words. Therefore, a Russian person, in order to find a name equivalent in meaning, needs to look into the sources that tell about the etymology of the name. And the sources by which you can find out the etymology of Russian names may not be very good, since we often associate the meaning and origin of the name with various esotericism and astrology, and on such sites they can often give not quite scientific interpretations of names, incomplete or inaccurate. And since the etymology itself is not always correctly indicated in the above list, there are errors in the translation. And, finally, the last nuance. The names in this translation sound unnatural, as they were literally translated into Japanese with complex kango, etc., without taking into account the peculiarities of female names in Japanese. Although in some names in this translation suffixes of female names are attached mi, ri, ko , but the base itself looks unnatural. Therefore, I decided to correct this list both in terms of etymology and in terms of translation.
In some cases, I give the equivalents of our name, if I could find any, in some I indicate only components that are close in meaning, from which, by adding suffixes of female names (see the article Female Names), one can form names similar to Russian in meaning, and in some, where neither a component nor a name can be given, have to be translated literally.
