Dace the Cat Angel / LR4 / / Latvijas Radio

Dace works at the airport, in a good position. The girl has little free time, but unlike her peers, she spends it not on meeting friends or going to clubs. Dace takes a bag of dry food and goes to Kundzinsala. Here, a whole colony of stray cats awaits her, which she took under her care.

When the girl moved to live in Kundziņsala, she could not calmly look at what was happening near her house. Kittens died of hunger, fell under the wheels of cars, meowed from the cold. For her money, Dace began to sterilize the mustachioed-striped ones.

Luckily for the girl, an abandoned shed was found in Kundziņsala. There it was decided to put houses — cardboard boxes with all the amenities. The Riga City Council also made its contribution by donating another cat “cottage” for four people.

Dace changed her place of residence, but did not leave her charges. As soon as he has a free minute, he gets on a trolley bus and goes to visit them. He always brings a tasty gift — a big bag of dry food. Dace began to take care of the cat colony around her new year. As a result, in a few years she helped almost three hundred cats.

At first, the girl made lists with information about each animal, but the “database” grew so much that confusion often arose, so Dace stopped counting and recording cats.

Dace completely breaks the stereotype that has developed in society that a cat lady is an elderly woman with a bag of herring, around which flocks of cats always hover and make dirt near the entrance. It’s not like that at all. Being a cat angel is a lot of work.

Dace’s like-minded people are young people. They try to instill a culture of feeding — dry food instead of fish, clean bowls instead of newspaper sheets with old fish residues infested with flies.

“The opinion of my friends was divided at first: some were against sterilization, some were for it. But now everyone agrees that this is the right thing to do. And they even help — someone brings food, someone old clothes to put in the house.»

The girl not only feeds the cats, but also provides medical care to the mustachioed-striped ones. If something happens, he takes the animal in an armful and takes him to the veterinarian. Again… for your money. And only one Dace knows how much effort needs to be made to catch the fidget, take him to the clinic and «do him good. »

Dace is known and loved in the veterinary clinic. In spite of everything, but situations are different — either the animal will scratch the hands of the doctor in blood, then, frightened, it will climb up the blinds to the ceiling.

She gave names to the cats that Dace feeds on Kundziņsala, but they do not respond to nicknames. They prefer traditional ones — kitty-kitty, minka.

Street cats are not Dace’s only passion. She is a frequent visitor to animal shelters. He comes here to walk the dogs, to help the workers with the housework.

“I can’t sit at home and watch TV. This time feels like wasted time to me. If I have a free day, I know I’ll go to the shelter and take a few dogs for a walk. Without me, they can sit in a cage all day. A walk is a joy for them and for me.”

When asked by Latvian Radio 4 if Dace does not become attached to her four-legged friends, the girl replies that she is desperately trying not to do this. There are enough such stories — “I have arrived. Saw. I took it with me.» But there are many animals, and the time and possibilities of the girl are not unlimited, and it is better to make several dogs or cats happy than one.

“It’s hard to take an animal for a walk and take it back to its cage so that it can think all day how great it was to walk…”

Now love cats from the shelter live at Dace’s house. They were found at the station in a cardboard box, barely alive. When the girl saw two brothers, she immediately took them to her. She says she would take everyone, but the apartment is small — the animals need space and time, which she does not have much. Therefore, the girl takes care of the rest of the four-legged animals in the shelter.

“There is a dog that I am very worried about. She was born in an orphanage, does not know much and is looking for people who would help her get used to the world around her. For example, I make a blanket, and she gets frightened and runs away, because she doesn’t understand how it can move.

The animal is afraid not only of the most ordinary blanket, but the sound of a boiling kettle causes alarm. They tried twice to place the dog in safe hands, but these hands did not have time to explain to the little creature how the world works. Dace is sure that sooner or later the owner will be found. He will show and tell. Or maybe he will live on a farm, far from civilization, and will not have to defend himself from everything that moves and makes terrible sounds.

During her work at the orphanage, Dace faced blatant cruelty towards our smaller brothers. He still remembers one of the cases:

“A dog was running along the highway. She had a bag in her teeth. Bringing people to help. The bag was untied and a kitten was found there. Wool in some places was shaved or dyed in different colors. Someone bullied him a lot. Both – both the cat and the dog – ended up in good hands.”

This is a story with a happy ending, Dace rejoices, but often crippled animals run away, lick their wounds in the corners, and no one learns anything about them.
