Baby hygiene products

The modern market is full of various hygiene products for newborn girls. But can everything be used when caring for a baby?

When choosing products, be guided by the following criteria:

do not use ordinary soap — only special baby soap;
baby hygiene products must maintain the natural pH level, preserve the natural microflora of the genital organs, have a pediatrician recommendation mark, be hypoallergenic, do not contain dyes and fragrances.

In addition, it is unacceptable for a girl to share hygiene items with her mother or sister: a towel, soap and cotton pads should belong only to her. And the use of such disposable diapers, hated by grandmothers, not only makes life easier for the mother, but also protects the baby from diseases of the genitourinary system, if the mother uses them for their intended purpose: a walk or a dream, but no more.

The first days of life

In the maternity hospital, the girl is cared for by medical staff. It is good if the mother and child stay in a common ward — nurses can simultaneously teach this art to a newly-made mother.

For the first few days, the skin, including the folds of your daughter’s labia, may have a layer of a light gray or cream-colored substance. This is vernix, the original lubricant. Neonatologists do not recommend washing it off — it nourishes and protects the skin of a newborn from external influences and many infections. But if there is a lot of plaque, it is better to remove the excess, because the fat contained in the lubricant will oxidize and become an excellent breeding ground for microbes.

Cleaning should be done with cotton wool soaked in warm boiled water (t ≥ 37 °C, test it on the wrist) or sterile oil. In no case should you try to clean it all at once — act delicately, and in a couple of days the plaque will disappear.

Care after discharge from the maternity hospital

Once at home, a young mother seeks advice, first of all, from new grandmothers. Although not all advice should be heeded — many techniques are not only outdated, but also dangerous to health.

No need to boil water. This does not protect the baby’s skin from harmful bacteria.
The baby needs to be washed first, then bathed.
Do not add herbal decoctions to the bath — they can dry out the skin. Do this only on the advice of your pediatrician.
But if the baby passed «in a big way», carefully wipe the feces with a damp cloth (without alcohol or antiseptic), and then wash with warm running water from the pubis to the anus. Washing in a basin is prohibited.
Bathe the child daily 1-2 times in 5 days with baby soap, external genitalia and buttocks (perineum) — 1 time per day at night or after defecation.
Cleaning should only be carried out with clean hands, no auxiliaries are required.
Do not wipe the leather — only blot with gentle motions.
After washing, let baby’s skin “breathe” for 10-15 minutes, and then treat with baby cream.

Breast Care Tips

A couple of days after birth, the baby often has swelling, redness of the breast, or even droplets of colostrum. This is not a deviation, but evidence of the presence of mother’s hormones. Your task is to minimize the mechanical impact on the mammary glands and, in case of severe redness and swelling, inform the pediatrician.

These tips will help a mother avoid many of the troubles associated with infectious diseases.

September 10, Monday, 13:00 — 17:00. Opening of the International Babywearing Week — 2012 «Continuing Traditions». Address of the event: st.m. «Chistye Prudy» or «Kitay-gorod», st. In the ring sling part, you will learn how to place your baby in a cradle and upright position in a ring sling, how to breastfeed, how to adjust the sling, what to look for when choosing a ring sling. In the part dedicated to the May-sling, the consultant will tell and show how to adjust the May-sling for wearing a newborn and grown-up baby, what to look for when choosing a May-sling if you are going to wear a baby in it from a very early age.
From 13:00 to 14:00, topic «Sling scarf, winding «Cross over the pocket»: from birth to the end of the sling age». The master class is taught by sling consultant Yulia Fadeeva. Part of the meeting will be devoted to the physiological position of the baby in the sling, the checkpoints that the mother should pay attention to when carrying the baby in any sling.
