Origin, Meaning, and History Of Kennedy

Kennedy is a three-syllable English name of Irish origin. It comes from the Gaelic “Cinnéidigh,” which is formed of the two Gaelic words “ceann” and “éidigh,” meaning ‘head’ and ‘helmet’ respectively. Thus, the name Kennedy means ‘helmeted head’ or ‘armored head.’ It can be said that the name is a representation of strength and is associated with a great history of the Gaelic and Celtic people.

Although being anglicized into a given name, it is more popular as a Surname and middle name. The name got its popularity in the US as a boy’s name due to its association with the Kennedy political family, especially John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the US, who is regarded as one of the country’s most beloved leaders. On the other hand, its popularity as a girl’s name may be owed to Lisa Kennedy Montgomery, the MTV host of Alternative Nation from 1992 to 1997.

The name is believed to first appear in 1912, but it took almost a century for it to get the most popular. South Dakota is recorded as the state where the name has been a consistent top-ranking girl’s name for 23 years from 1995 to 2018.

Some common variations of this name in different cultures and languages are Kinnedius in Latin, Kennedi in English, and Uarraig in Scottish Gaelic. Some cool nicknames for this name are Ken, Kenney, Kenzie, Dee, and Didi.

Kennedy is also a popular name in pop culture. It is used as the name of fictional characters in Resident Evil as Leon S. Kennedy, the rookie police officer, and in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Kennedy, the potential slayer.

The Kennedy clan: what the younger generation of the famous dynasty looks like

From left to right: Rose Schlossberg (granddaughter of John and Jacqueline Kennedy), Patrick Schwarzenegger (grandson of Eunice Kennedy, sister of John F. Kennedy) and Katherine Schwarzenegger (granddaughter of Eunice Kennedy, sister of John F. Kennedy)

If there were a monarchy in the USA, then this clan could well claim the role of the ruling dynasty. However, Kennedy never needed the Crown, because their family already took root in almost all institutions of state power — from the US Embassy in Great Britain to the White House. Their famous history spans only 170 years and dates back to the day a migrant from Ireland named Patrick Kennedy set foot in Boston. His son will become a prominent businessman and one of the brightest faces of the Democratic Party, his grandson will serve as the US Ambassador to the UK, and his three great-grandchildren — John, Robert and Edward — will rise to the posts of President, Attorney General and Senator, respectively.

The famous triumvirate of the Kennedy brothers. From left to right: John (future US president), Robert (future attorney general) and Edward (future senator), July 20, 1960

, in the period from 1947 to 2010 in the United States there was no such year when no one from the dynasty held any federal post. It was the Kennedys who made politics secular and glamorous (largely thanks to John and his wife Jacqueline), and it is they who are still trying to imitate ambitious young men and women who want to write their name in the political history of the States.

And who are the direct descendants of the president and his relatives imitating? As it turned out, the young Kennedys try their hand not only in politics, but also in cinema, journalism, art, and also in the social sphere. We show how the brightest representatives of the famous dynasty look today.

Rose Schlossberg, 34

Rose Schlossberg at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

It is hardly necessary to prove the relationship of this girl with the famous presidential couple, because the similarity between Rose and her legendary grandmother Jacqueline is obvious. The eldest child of Caroline and Edwin, Rose was named after her equally famous great-grandmother, who still bears the unofficial title of «matriarch of the Kennedy clan» even after her death. The girl does not try to overshadow the glory of her relatives, but she does not sit idle either: Rose periodically does charity work, sponsors politicians (for example, she transferred funds for the election campaign of Barack Obama in 2008), and also tries herself in acting. There are no full-length films in Miss Schlossberg’s piggy bank yet, but you can look at a copy of Jacqueline Onassis on YouTube — it was on this platform that Rose presented the comedy vlog series End Times Girls Club.

Tatiana Schlossberg, 32

Tatiana Schlossberg in the Senate

Origin : daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, granddaughter of John and Jacqueline Kennedy 9000 3

Probably, the girl got her name so pleasant for Russian hearing because of her father’s family background — he was the son of Ukrainian migrants of Jewish origin. The girl did not go into politics, but she took up another typical Kennedy business — journalism. Educated at Yale and Oxford, she landed a job at the prestigious New York Times. Tatiana now works more as a freelance writer and regularly writes about environmental issues and climate change. And in 2017, another important event happened in her life: the girl married her classmate John Moran.

John «Jack» Schlossberg, 29

John «Jack» Schlossberg on Today Show

Origin : son of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, grandson of John and Jacqueline Kennedy 900 03

His mother is the only living child famous couple John and Jacqueline Kennedy. Moreover, in fact, after Uncle John died in a plane crash in 1999, the young man is considered the only descendant of the President of the United States (male). Such a well-known origin leaves its mark on the young man: in 2013, John graduated from Yale, and in the fall of 2017 he entered Harvard Law School. Mr. Schlossberg dreams of following in the footsteps of his famous grandfather and becoming involved in politics in the future. The first successes are already there: in 2016, John managed to work at the US State Department, and also actually be for some time an assistant to his mother Caroline, who from 2013 to 2017. was the American ambassador to Japan.

Patrick Schwarzenegger, 28

Patrick Schwarzenegger in Munich

Origin : son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver (daughter of Eunice Kennedy and, respectively, niece of John Kennedy)

And don’t let his last name fool you: yes- yes, Patrick is the son of that same Arnold, the «Terminator» and the ex-governor of California. His mother Maria still works as a journalist and publicist, and, as they say, in the history of Arnold’s governorship, her channels of influence were not without her (after all, she is a representative of the Kennedy clan).

In any case, Patrick’s parents have been divorced for a long time, and the young man himself is already building his own career as a model and actor (although at the age of 15, with the help of his mom and dad, he organized the Project360 men’s clothing company, which also pursues charitable goals). Patrick has already been the face of the Hudson Jeans brand, and also boasts a contract with L.A. models. The young man’s filmography includes 18 works at all (Patrick has been filming since adolescence).

Katherine Schwarzenegger, 32

Katherine Schwarzenegger in Hollywood

Origin John F. Kennedy)

Katherine apparently decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps — a well-known journalist and author in the USA — and also connected her life with journalism. The girl graduated from the Faculty of Communications of the University of South Carolina, and at the moment she can boast of the publication of three books. In addition, Ms. Schwarzenegger maintains her own lifestyle blog, Katherine, and also supports the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Best Friends Animal Society. In 2019In 2020, Katherine became the wife of the famous Hollywood actor, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt, and in August 2020, the couple became the parents of a girl named Laila Maria

Christina Schwarzenegger, 31

Origin John F. Kennedy’s minions)

Katherine’s younger sister also decided to study communications. Christina graduated from Georgetown University — the same university where her mother once studied. From time to time, the girl acts in films and TV shows, and, together with her mother, Christina produced the documentary film Take Your Pills, which tells about the negative consequences of taking psychostimulants. The work, by the way, was shown on Netflix.

Robert «Bobby» Kennedy III, 37

Robert Kennedy III at a photocall in Rome

Origin : son of Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. and his first wife Emily Ruth Black, grandson of Robert Kennedy (brother of the President of the United States)

His father followed his father in choosing law as his life’s work, but Robert Kennedy III decided to go another way and made his career in the entertainment industry. So, in 2013, Bobby acted as a screenwriter and lead actor in the comedy America, and a year earlier he directed his own documentary film ELEW: Live from Infinity, dedicated to musician Eric Lewis. This year, Mr. Kennedy is presenting yet another work, this time about the journalist Hunter Stockton Thompson. Rumor has it that the young man plans to call his stepmother, actress Cheryl Hines, for one of the roles. By the way, Bobby became famous for bringing a CIA officer, albeit a former one, to the Kennedy clan. We are talking about his wife Amaryllis Fox, with whom the young man exchanged vows in early July 2018. And in February 2019The couple became parents for the first time — they had a girl, who was named Bobby.

Kathleen Kennedy, 33

Kathleen was named after her cousin grandmother, sister of President Kennedy, who at one time was a famous socialite and philanthropist, and in addition also a British aristocrat (she became her thanks to her marriage to the 10th Duke of Devonshire). The outward resemblance between relatives is noticeable, but in all other respects, the younger Kathleen prefers to go her own way: write for glossy publications, and also try herself on the screen (the girl once received episodic roles in such series as «News Service» and «Gossip Girl»).

Conor Kennedy, 27

Conor Kennedy at the premiere of «Ethel»

Origin : son of Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. and his second wife Mary Richardson, grandson of Robert Kennedy

Conor Kennedy tries his hand at animal rights (for example, the young man collaborated with the Ocean Alliance organization involved in saving whales), but by the age of 23 he discovered another talent in himself — to get on the front pages of newspapers. First — as another boyfriend of Taylor Swift. Then — as a participant in scandals. Connor was arrested twice: in 2013 in connection with a political rally near the White House (by the way, the young man was detained along with his father) and in 2017 for a banal fight in a bar.

Kaira Kennedy, 26

Kaira at the premiere of The Age of Adaline

Origin : daughter of Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. and his second wife Mary Richardson, granddaughter of Robert Kennedy

Kaira is only 23, but she has already managed to earn remarkable fame for yourself — albeit not all over the world, but in the USA for sure. The method is very predictable for millennials: social networks. Like Donald Trump’s «forgotten» daughter Tiffany, Kaira likes to show off her wealth using Instagram (an extremist organization banned in Russia) and Snapchat, for which, by the way, she was once accused of cyberbullying. As they say, for the damaged reputation of the family, the girl’s father strictly forbade her to use social networks.

Joe Kennedy III, 41

Joe Kennedy III at a memorial service for Robert Kennedy

Origin : son of businessman and politician Joseph Patrick Kennedy, grandson of Robert Kennedy

But Bobby’s nephew, Joe Kennedy III, decided go the typical «family» way and become a politician. A graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School, Joe has worked both in the Peace Corps and as a public prosecutor. However, Congress attracted him much more: in 2012, he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives, where he was successfully elected. There he sits to this day.

Michaela Cuomo, 24

Roberta Kennedy

Origin : Daughter of Kerry Kennedy and Andrew Cuomo, granddaughter of Robert Kennedy

Her mother is an activist and writer, and the daughter of the 64th Attorney General of the United States, Robert Kennedy. Father is a well-known politician, the 56th Governor of New York. Mikaela herself is just starting her life at her age: she studies at Brown University, and also periodically participates in political actions. So, in 2015, the girl launched a small campaign against sexual crimes. Michaela sold activist T-shirts and donated all the proceeds to the Human Rights Center named after her famous grandfather.

Kara and Mariah Cuomo, 27

Origin : daughters of Kerry Kennedy and Andrew Cuomo, granddaughters of Robert Kennedy

The twin sisters from the Kennedy clan can only boast of a prestigious education and small personal achievements so far. So, Kara graduated from Harvard University and is actively involved in sports, while Mariah studied at Brown University and now devotes all her free time to family and travel. The girls try to stay away from cameras and social events, but from time to time they can be seen at events in support of their father’s policies.

The beauty and grace of Jacqueline Kennedy

July 28, 2014, 1:09 pm

After graduating from university, Jacqueline worked as a correspondent for The Washington Times-Herald daily. Her duties included asking witty questions to randomly selected people on the street and taking pictures of them, which were printed in the newspaper next to selected interview fragments. Her most notable stories included an interview with Richard Nixon, the inauguration of President Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961), and an account of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

In 1952, at a dinner party, Jackie met Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy. In 1953 they got married.

In January 1960, John F. Kennedy announced his candidacy for President of the United States. Jacqueline was pregnant at the time and was unable to join her husband’s election campaign, but worked from home: she answered letters, recorded commercials, gave interviews to newspapers and television, and wrote the Campaign Wife column in the newspaper.

On November 9, 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected the 35th President of the United States.

Jacqueline Kennedy’s biggest project as First Lady was the restoration of the White House. Jackie herself supervised the reorganization. At her insistence, a bill was introduced in Congress, according to which the White House received the status of a museum. It was under Jacqueline Kennedy that many of the residence’s historic rooms changed color: the Red Room became dark cherry, the Green Room became the color of Chartreuse liqueur, and the oval Blue Room became white. In addition, Jacqueline Kennedy filled the residence with the best examples of furniture from the 18th-19th centuries, asked US museums to donate 150 old paintings to the White House, bought expensive handmade curtains in France, and restored everything that could be restored. Mrs. Kennedy herself selected fabrics for draperies, furniture and wall upholstery, as well as lamps.

She participated in the creation of the John F. Kennedy Library, the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, was engaged in social work, acted as an intermediary for the restoration of diplomatic relations between the United States and Colombia.

In 1968, five years after the death of John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline married Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis. In her new marriage, she continued to engage in social activities, advocated for the preservation of Greek historical monuments.

After the death of Aristotle Onassis in 1975, Jacqueline resumed her editorial career, first at Viking Press and then at Doubleday in New York. She also spoke out in defense of the cultural heritage of America and worked a lot in this direction. Jacqueline Kennedy managed to defend Grand Central Station in New York, which they wanted to destroy in 1970s.

In January 1994, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was diagnosed with lymphoma. She died in her sleep on May 19, 1994. She was buried at Arlington National Cemetery (Virginia).

Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy had two children. In 1957, daughter Caroline was born, in 1960 — son John Jr. (died in a plane crash in 1999).

Jacqueline Kennedy is still one of the most beloved and iconic First Ladies of the United States. For many women, not only in America, but throughout the world, Jacqueline Kennedy has become a symbol of beauty and style.
