How to name a girl in 2022 — lucky names for girls — August 5, 2022

Do you remember how you dreamed of being called as a child?

Share

Now Milans, Ariannas and Darinas are playing more and more often on playgrounds, it will be difficult to find Nastenka or Lenochka among today’s children. It is understandable, the generation of millennials becomes parents, and for them all boundaries are erased. Western, European, Asian names are cunningly intertwined with Russian reality, and now someone is going to enroll Estella Vasilievna in the first class. Our colleagues from Woman.ru remembered how they liked to call girls in the Soviet Union.

There is an opinion that a person who has received a distinguished name will have to go out of his way all his life to prove to others that he is really special.

— Names are formed by time, epoch. If in tsarist Russia it was customary to name children according to the calendar, Agafya, Glafira, Feodosia, Dunya were popular among girls, then with the advent of Soviet power, when the church faded into the background, giving way to secular society, the approach to names also changed. Collectivization became the main principles of the new system in Soviet Russia. Names have become simpler, more memorable, and now they were met en masse,” says historian and sociologist Ivan Kataev.

In the mid-1960s, even a short joke on this topic was known in the capital: “Are you having a boy or Lenochka?”

This time in the USSR became a real expanse for Elen , they were everywhere. Now, if you see a receptionist, hospital or canteen around those years of birth, you can timidly ask: “Elena?” — and you are likely to be right. Approximately 14 percent of the time. This is not a joke to you — the name occupied a leading position for 25 years, and only by 1985 the number of Len slowly began to decrease. At that time, there were 14–16 Lenochkas for every hundred girls.

Only Natasha could compete with the Lenas. This name was often given by parents to girls in the 1960s and 1970s. And, for example, in the 1950s, Tanyusha were more common.

The point is that people had no choice as such — church calendars were not issued at all in those years, parents chose from a relatively small list. But everyone lived about the same: Czechoslovak walls, Biryusa refrigerators, a hat, like Nadia from The Irony of Fate, and daughter Lena.

At the end of the 1970s, a poor set of female names began to be diluted with old names, and Mashenka , Anna , Ekaterina began to appear on the sites.

— These names refer us to the Russian Empire, when children were given names in honor of crowned persons, believing that the baby would have a strong heavenly patron and intercessor. The same as that of the sovereign or empress. In the same period, the inhabitants of the Union actively adopt names from different republics. For example, becoming popular Oksana is the Ukrainian version of our Ksyusha, or Olesya is the Belarusian reading of Alexandra, the historian explains.

After the war, parents again turned their attention to such simple and solid names as Ivan and Maria . Then, among a thousand girls, about every third of the parents named Masha. So why weren’t moms and dads creative at the time? The answer is simple.

— The Soviet period of history was rich in events, changes and repressions. People were, shall we say, more cautious in their preferences. If someone dared to take a bold step, then these were derivative names. For example, Vladlen — Vladimir Lenin, and Ninel — the female form of Lenin is the opposite. The fashion for names was set by war heroes, generals, actors of patriotic films. After the release of The Ballad of a Soldier, the girls began to be called Zhanna , as the main character Zhanna Prokhorenko, the expert argues.

But when the iron curtain finally collapsed, people began to borrow unusual names with pleasure. Massively appeared Diana , Roberta , Renata , Marianna and Rosa (someone was very fond of Brazilian TV series).

So, can we say that soon the fashion for simple Soviet names will return to us? Probably not.

— Some names — yes. These are Anna, Vera, Nelly, Alexandra, Sofia. But the list is not so long, people today want to stand out, to be different from others. But history, as we know, is cyclical. And, perhaps, after the «royal» Sophia and Alexander, Tanya and Jeanne will again come into fashion, the expert concluded.

We recently wrote about the opinion that the name given at birth programs a certain character in a person and predetermines his fate. From the point of view of energy from the very first day, it is actively involved in the formation of personal qualities, and hence the whole fate of a little person.
