Human Names for Dogs
You’ll notice that many of the names on this list are people names as well, and would sound equally at home on a baby as they do on a puppy. Why is that? Our data shows that each year, dog lovers increasingly turn to human names for their pets. This reflects the larger cultural trend that embraces dogs as full-fledged family members rather than “just” pets.
In the past, male dog names and female dog names alike were less likely to be personalized to the dog. For instance, a boy dog might have been named Rex, Duke, or Rover, while a girl dog might have been called Lady or Princess. Nowadays, however, you’re more likely to hear Savannah, Sam, or Sophie called out at the local dog park.
Tips for Choosing a Dog Name
So how do you find the perfect “S” name for your dog? Think about personality—yours AND theirs! For example, in this list, there’s a variety to fit any type of dog, from a sweet Stella to a tough Simba or a refined Sergio. For those of us with a sense of humor, funny dog names like Stinky, Schnitzel, or Siri might fit the bill.
Another consideration when choosing your dog’s name? Dog training. This is of particular importance for puppies. When you’re teaching your new dog to respond to commands like sit, stay, or come, you’ll want to be sure their name isn’t a source of confusion. In other words, avoid puppy names that sound like a common dog training cue, such as “Bit,” which could easily be misheard as “sit.” Many dog experts recommend choosing a name with at least two syllables and a sing-song or vowel sound at the end.
Dog breeds factor into puppy name decisions, as well. A big dog like a Great Dane can carry Scout, while a French bulldog would be cute as Scotch and a German shepherd as Sue.
However, don’t worry if you don’t stick to your chosen name theme for your new puppy or adopted dog. The best dog names fit the individual pet and make you smile. Because dogs are part of our family, and their names reflect what’s important to us as well as our love for them.

Conditions or the Like operator are used in a query to find data that matches a certain pattern. For example, let’s say we have a «Customers» table in our database, as in the example below, and we only want to find customers who live in cities whose names start with «B». Here’s how we’ll create a query and use Like conditions:
-
Open table
«Customers»:
-
On the Create tab, click the Query Builder button.
-
Click the «Add» button and the «Customers» table will be added to the query designer.
org/ListItem»>
-
In field «City» add conditions «Like B*» and press button «Execute».
Double-click fields Last Name and City to add them to the Query Designer grid.
The query results will only select customers from city names starting with the letter «B».
See this topic for more information about using criteria.

If you prefer SQL syntax (the SQL language), here’s how to do it:
-
Open the «Customers» table and on the tab «Create» click the button «Query Builder».
-
On the Home tab click button «> SQL», and then enter the following syntax:
SELECT [Last Name], City FROM Customers WHERE City Like “B*”;
-
Click Run .
-
Right-click the query tab and select > Close.
For more information, see SQL Access: Concepts, Vocabulary and Syntax, and How to Modify SQL to Clearly Retrieve Query Results.

Words that we write in vain with a capital letter
Spelling of a capital letter in Russian
When is a capital letter written in Russian? At the beginning of a sentence or replica, in first names, surnames and patronymics, in geographical, astronomical and religious names, animal names. In these cases, there are no doubts and exceptions: these are words that are always capitalized. But in writing the names of authorities, institutions, holidays, positions and titles, there are features that are important to remember and take into account in the text. The correct spelling of words that assume a capital letter at the beginning shows your literacy and education, and they need to be remembered.
Birthday, Birthday or Birthday
Correct: birthday.
Why : according to the rules of the Russian language, the names of official holidays are written with a capital (big) letter. For example: Knowledge Day, Children’s Day, New Year and so on. Please note: the first word is capitalized, the rest are small. The exception is Victory Day, where both words stand out.
Birthday, unfortunately, is not a public holiday. Therefore, capitalization is only allowed at the beginning of a sentence. But if there is an excuse ahead, we also write in lowercase: “Happy birthday, dear friend!”.
<
Pushkin’s era, Pushkin’s poems
Source:samddn.ru
Correct: Pushkin’s era, Pushkin’s poetry
Why : adjectives containing the suffix -sk- are always lowercase. In this case, we are talking about generic concepts that relate to the poet, and do not characterize Alexander Sergeevich himself. The same applies to phraseological units: Sisyphean labor, Ariadne’s thread, Procrustean bed.
Adjectives denoting individual affiliation are capitalized if they are formed from proper names with the suffix -ov(s) or -in: Vanin’s bicycle, Machine’s dress.
Motherland
Source: picsa.tm
Correct: motherland.
Why: Home usually refers to the place where a person was born and raised. This is not a proper name. “My small homeland is Moscow, and my big one is Russia.”
A word with a capital letter is written only in exceptional cases when it is necessary to emphasize patriotism stylistically. «He is ready to give his life for the Motherland.» The same capitalization rule applies to the fatherland and homeland.
President
Correct: President.
Why: the capital letter in the titles of the highest government positions is used only in official documents. For example: Decree of the President of the Russian Federation.
«President» is written with a small letter, even if he is his own, dear, and not foreign. After all, this is just a profession, like a doctor or a teacher.
Moscow State University

Correct: Moscow State University.
Why: the same capitalization rule applies as with holidays. When deciphering the abbreviations of educational institutions, write the first word in capital letters, and the rest in lowercase.
If the university is named after someone, then the word “name” and regalia are written in small letters, the hero’s surname, of course, with a capital letter. For example: Lomonosov Moscow State University.
Olympics
Source: unsplash.com / @bt_optics
Correct: Olympiad (competition).
Why: refers to the competitive process, not a proper name. For example: Foxford International Online Olympiad for students in grades 3-11. If we are talking about the Olympic Games, then it is appropriate to write with a capital letter — “Sochi Olympics-2014”.
Internet
Source: unsplash.com / @thomasjsn
Correct: Internet.
Why: According to the recommendations of the Institute of the Russian Language of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the word «Internet» can be written with both uppercase and lowercase letters.
Most of the media and major educational resources believe that the Internet is a household word by analogy with the telephone and television. This means that you need to write it with a small letter, including in complex words (online store, online portal, etc.).
And it also leans beautifully: let’s talk about the Internet, there is no access to the Internet, and so on.
you
Source: unsplash.com / @chrisliverani
Correct: you.
Why: because of echoes of the speech etiquette of the past. It is acceptable to capitalize “you” in personal correspondence if you want to emphasize your respectful attitude. But if this is not done, it does not mean that you treat the addressee with disdain.
The pronoun «you» does not require a capital letter in articles and posts on the Internet, in newspaper publications, advertising, literary works, and also if the official address is addressed to several persons (plural).
Russian names in English
Do you know how your name will sound in English? And how to write it correctly? Despite the fact that in English-speaking countries there are many complex and unusual names for us that we cannot always make out the first time, it is also not always easy for the British and Americans to understand and pronounce Russian names.
From this article you will learn how to spell Alexandra, Anastasia, Andrey, Evgeny, Daria and other Russian names in English, as well as how to introduce yourself to another person correctly when meeting and how to fill out documents without errors.
Some names are universal and have their counterparts all over the world. For example, Alexander is Alex (Alex), Elizabeth is Elizabeth (Elizabeth), Mary is Mary (Mary), Julia is Julia (Julia) and so on.
Rules of transliteration
When translating proper names and titles in Russian, you should use the generally accepted transliteration. This is a letter-by-letter transmission of a word by letters of another language. This is how the alphabet in Cyrillic looks like and its analogues in English:
- A — A
- B — B
- B — V
- G — G
- D — D
- E — E, YE
- Yo — E, YO
- W — ZH
- Z — Z
- I — I
- Y — Y
- K — K
- L — L
- M — M
- N — N
- O — O
- P — P
- R — R
- C — S
- T — T
- U — U
- F — F
- X — KH
- C — TS
- H — CH
- SH — SH
- SH — SHCH
- b — «‘» (or omitted)
- Y — Y
- b — «‘» (or omitted)
- E — E
- YU — YU
- I — YA, IA
If everything is more or less clear with the transliteration of individual letters and sounds, then with a combination of letters it can be more difficult. Very often there is a problem with the Russian endings of proper names. Below you will find the correct transliteration options:
- «-ai» — «-ai»
- «-aya» — «-aya»
- «-y» — «-y(iy)»
- «-ei» — «-ei»
- «-ia» — «-ia»
- «-oy» — «-oy(i)»
- «-th» — «-yi»
A few more important points:
The Russian «х» sound is often amplified and rendered exactly as «kh», because in English «h» is often omitted when pronouncing
The combination of the letters «j» is transmitted in transliteration in several ways: j, dj or dzh.
The combination «ks» is better to use the letters «ks» instead of «x», so that the name sounds more correct.
Usually the apostrophe is used in transliteration to emphasize the softness of the consonant sound, but as a rule, it is rarely used in official documents.
Let’s take a look at popular Russian names. Do you know how to write Alexander in English? There can be two options here: Aleksandr or Alexander. The second is closer to the American version of the name and is abbreviated as Alex. By the way, the name Alexei in English can be written as Alex as well. But the full version of this name, with the correct transliteration, is Aleksey or Alexey.
The name Andrei in English will be written as Andrey or Andrei. The foreign analogue of this name is Andrew (Andrew). Please note that how Andrei is written in English is how it is pronounced. Do not forget to check the transliteration rules when translating. The name Yuri has an English translation of Yuriy. But other transliteration options are often found: Yuri or Yury.
Let’s move on to something more complicated: how will the name Eugene be in English? The correct answer is Yevgeny or Yevgeniy. By the way, this name also has its analogue in English — Eugene (Eugene). For the female version of this name, Evgenia, the translation into English will be acceptable in several versions: Yevgenia, Yevgeniya or Evgenia.
Tricky question: how do you spell Natalia in English? The fact is that even in the Russian language itself there are two spellings of this name: Natalia and Natalia. So in English, the name options will be as follows: Natalya, Natalia or Nataliya. By the way, a funny stereotype is associated with this name: abroad, the name «Natasha» has already become a household name for all beautiful Russian girls. So you also need to know how to write Natasha in English: Natasha.
One of the famous Russian names is Ekaterina. In English, it will sound like Yekaterina or Ekaterina. A common English version of this name is Kate or Katherine. As for other female names: how do you spell the name Anastasia in English? Very simply — Anastasia or Anastasia. But the shortened version, that is, the name Nastya in English will be written as Nastya.
In general, abbreviated names are much easier to pronounce and write. For example, in English Masha will sound like Masha or Mary. We will write Julia in English as Yulya, and in the abbreviated version this name is not much different from the full name — Yulia (Yuliya).
Ksyusha in English will be Ksyusha, and the full version of the name Ksenia is Kseniya.
How do you translate names that have a soft sign? For example, how do you spell Tatiana in English? If you carefully read the rules of transliteration, then you know that in ordinary writing a soft sign can be denoted by a single apostrophe, but in documents and proper names it is usually simply omitted. So the full version of the name Tanya in English is written as Tatyana or Tatiana. As for Dasha, it will briefly sound like Dasha, but in English Daria in the full version of the name will be written as Darya.
As for such a complex name as Lyudmila, in English it will be written as Lyudmila. But the abbreviated version, Lyuda, in English will be Lyuda.
We have already analyzed quite a lot of simple and complex names. A couple of final questions: how do you spell Veronica in English? The correct answer is Veronica. This name is consonant with another beautiful female name, Victoria, which is not something foreign to the British: that was the name of one of the most famous queens of Great Britain. The most correct transliteration of this name is Victoria.
Below are examples of how other Russian names are spelled correctly in English.

By the way, the same Russian names may have different spellings in English depending on the organization that issued the document. This is due to the fact that in Russia not everyone follows the rules of international transliteration, and this is not entirely correct, as confusion can arise when buying tickets or filling out documents.
Remember how your name and surname are written in the passport. Surely, you noticed that it does not indicate your middle name. This is because there is no such thing as “patronymic” in English, but double surnames and given names are common. But sometimes we still need to fill out our full name in English or introduce ourselves to business colleagues. In this case, it is better to say first the first name, then the patronymic, and then the last name (for example: Ivan Alekseevich Ivanov).
When filling out documents, the first name is indicated in the First name column, the last name is indicated in the Last name or Second name column.
Instead of First name, given name / forename / Christian name can be indicated — this all means the name that is given to a person at birth.
We have already mentioned that many foreigners do not have a patronymic, but have a middle name. It is specified in documents as Middle name. If you do not have it, then this column should be left empty. The line with the last name can also be marked as surname or family name.
Nickname means a shortened or abbreviated form of a given name, or more commonly just a nickname. Patronymic in English is translated as patronymic, it is also a generic name. The surname of the girl before marriage will be called maiden name, and after — married name.
Once again I would like to draw your attention to such an important detail as the correct indication of your own name, especially in documents and resumes. No need to distort your name in the English manner in official papers. If, when meeting, Elena can introduce herself as Helen, and Maria as Mary, then when filling out documents it is better to write according to the rules of international transliteration: Elena and Maria.
And, finally, some useful phrases on the subject of a person’s name in English:
It is very simple to introduce yourself to someone: “Hello, my name is Anton” (Hello, my name is Anton).
You can ask how to spell someone’s name with the phrase «Could you spell your name, please?» or «How do you spell your first name?». As for the last name, a similar question: How do you spell your last name? (How do you spell your last name?).
If you want to know how to spell a person’s full name, ask the following question: What is the full name for Josh? (What is the full name for Josh?).
And if there are several repeated letters in a word and you are not sure of the correct spelling, you can ask a question like this: Is your name spelled with one L or double L? (Is your name spelled with one L or two?).
We hope that now you know how to write your name in English correctly and will not make a mistake when filling out the documents. Good luck!

The modern English alphabet contains 26 letters. English sounds were first recorded in the Anglo-Saxon runic alphabet as early as the 5th century. Christian missionaries brought to the island not only their religion, but also the Latin alphabet, which began to replace the runic alphabet around the 7th century. For a long time, these two alphabets existed in parallel.
The modern English alphabet (The English alphabet [ˈalfəbɛt]) is based on the Latin alphabet or «Latin». So what is the number in the English alphabet? Unlike the Russian language, which has 33 letters, the English alphabet consists of 26 letters:
- 6 letters can represent vowel sounds: «A», «E», «I», «O», «U», «Y»;
- 21 letters can represent consonants: «B», «C», «D», «F», «G», «H», «J», «K», «L», «M», «N» ”, “P”, “Q”, “R”, “S”, “T”, “V”, “W”, “X”, “Y”, “Z”.

Sounds of the English alphabet
We start learning English letters even before we encounter foreign language lessons. We know them even before we start learning English: we meet them at work, when we play computer games or surf the Internet. English words are found everywhere: on advertising posters, in the names of goods, in store signs.
Although the letters may be visually familiar, they are not always pronounced the way they are written. The alphabet of the English language for beginners with pronunciation, numbering and translation will help here, because even those who are fluent in foreign languages find it difficult to speak correctly. A typical situation is to spell an English word, for example, to give an email address, your name or street in English. This is where the difficulties begin, and we try to explain ourselves with images and associations: i — “like a stick with a dot”, H — “like a Russian n”, s — “like a dollar”, v — “like a tick.
From here it is better to memorize not only the letters, but also their pronunciation. The latter is written by transcription and enclosed in square brackets. At first, it will be easier for you to memorize transcription with Russian pronunciation, but gradually you need to give it up and focus only on English transcription.
How to learn the English alphabet
Learning the alphabet is not just about remembering the order of the alphabet in English, Russian or Spanish, or knowing how many non-letters there are. To know the alphabet is to be able to pronounce sounds, as well as to write lowercase and uppercase letters correctly. In order to learn the entire alphabet of the English language easily, quickly and forever, follow these rules:
- Memorize both uppercase and lowercase letters of the English alphabet at the same time, pay attention to how English letters are written.
- Learn both the name of English letters and the correct pronunciation, use the alphabet with transcription. It is easier to remember this at the same time than to relearn it later.
- Use all available resources: use audio recordings, videos of examples of correct pronunciation, printed texts, Internet resources.
- Learn the English alphabet in order, as in the alphabet. Then change tactics: start studying the letters backwards, randomly, grouping.
- Exercise regularly, preferably every day for at least a few minutes. If you are tired of learning the same letters, take any children’s book in English. Maybe you will not understand the meaning of what is written, but you will definitely be able to recognize and name this or that letter.
Another good way to learn the alphabet is to memorize a special rhyme. It is very short, but it will help to know every letter by heart:
Do you know your ABC?
You can learn along with me!
A, B, C, D, E, F, G,
H, I, J, K,
L, M, N, O, P U, V,
W, X, Y and Z
Now, I know my ABC’s.
Next time won’t you sing with me?
And the last piece of advice. Divide all letters into three large groups and learn them in three stages: the first group is 6 vowels: Aa, Her, Ii, Oo, Uu, Yy. Do not forget about transcription and remember that in English vowels can change their sound depending on the type of syllables, stress and other conditions; the second group of letters includes those that are written and pronounced similarly to Russian letters. They are easy to remember: Bb, Cc, Dd, Kk, Ll, Mm, Nn, Pp, Ss, Tt, Xx; the third group consists of those letters that sound and are written unfamiliar to native Russian speakers: Ff, Gg, Hh, Jj, Qq, Rr, Vv, Ww, Zz.
Methods and techniques for memorizing the English alphabet
There are many ways to learn the English alphabet from scratch that are suitable for both adults and children.

You can print the English alphabet tables from this article or search for others: English alphabet by numbers; English alphabet with numbering of letters, etc. Hang them over your desk and browse and read aloud whenever you have a free moment. The main thing is to memorize the alphabet with the pronunciation of sounds.
One of the most effective ways is to make colored cards with the letters and words that begin with them and post them in a visible place. These cards can be made by yourself or bought in the store. It is better to use well-known words, for example, the names of animals.
You can train with special exercises, for example, this one: get a special notebook and write down letters in several lines — both uppercase and lowercase letters of the English alphabet. And when writing, dictate to yourself aloud the name of the letter. This exercise includes all three main types of memory: auditory, visual and motor.
Don’t forget about games that will help you learn the English alphabet. For example, Spell the word or “Spell the word” — whoever spells it wrong first loses. And you can also read the alphabet at speed, write letters correctly by ear, pronounce the letters written on the card, and so on. The audio alphabet of the English language with pronunciation has proven itself well. A student can independently master the letters and sounds just by listening to the recording.
